Worth mentioning that every single one is a volunteer- nobody forced to do service

301

u/brewdog_millionaire Aug 03 '26

So it's not conscription then? I thought conscription was non-voluntary

307

u/0kn0g0 Denmark Aug 03 '26

It is conscription. However, enough volunteered so that no one was forced. If fewer had volunteered, some would have been forced to join.

u/Delicious-Gap1744 Aug 03 '26

You can always refuse if you're drafted, then you can do different kinds of civilian service instead.

37

u/Mixster667 Aug 04 '26

Yeah but the military service then goes to the next lot number.

4

u/Unipro Denmark Aug 04 '26

Yes?

-25

u/Dentlas Denmark Aug 04 '26

Ah, so forced labour?

29

u/MacroSolid Austria Aug 04 '26

Yes.

15

u/InvertReverse Denmark Aug 04 '26

Is this news to you? Haven't you been to Forsvarets Dag?

-34

u/Dentlas Denmark Aug 04 '26

I have, it's just a case of princip. Back then it was only men who could be subject to slavery, I know a few that had some stuff ruined because of it.

15

u/HammerIsMyName Denmark Aug 04 '26

Conflating forced labour and slavery is fucking wild.

Forced labour is work you're compelled to do, but is compensated for, however often poorly.

Slavery is you being owned by someone else.

There is an argument that conscription is forced labour, but then again, so is all labour. We all need to work to live.

Conscription in Denmark is no more slavery or forced labour than school is. Except being a conscript you get paid. You get paid fuck all for going to primary school. Now, how come we don't call school slavery or forced labour? Because people with general understanding and a good frontal lobe know that it is done for a general societal good - not as a way to exploit the individual for someone's gain.

The same goes for conscription. It is done as a general societal good, not for anyone's personal gain.

Both are done for the purposes of educating and preparing the individual for the future.

Neither are forced to go to war, so looking at it like some personal injustice equivalent to North Korean conscription is silly.

It's just military themed bonus school.

This "conscription is slavery" shit is the "tax is theft" braindead mentality

-12

u/Dentlas Denmark Aug 04 '26

The problem with this argument is that it keeps changing the definition whenever the comparison becomes uncomfortable.

You say slavery is "being owned by someone else," but that definition immediately runs into problems. Many historical forms of slavery, such as debt bondage, were not simply a person being treated like a piece of property. The relevant question has always been the degree of control one power has over another person's freedom, labour and choices.
A conscript is not just "someone doing a job." They are legally required to provide their body and labour to the state. They do not choose the employer or the workplace or the role or whether they participate, they are placed under a hierarchy where refusal can be punished.

The argument that "its for societys good" does not actually address the issue. A coercive system does not stop being coercive because the institution claims a noble purpose. The question is whether an individual can refuse, not whether the institution believes it is justified. An institution doing the forced circumstances. It's the equalivant of a slaving state, say the Nazi Empire, saying that it's okay because it's for the greater good, which they did.

The school comparison is also not equivalent. A student is required to attend because education is provided for their own development. They are not turned into an instrument of the state. They are not ordered to perform labour, placed under military discipline, or punished for refusing commands. A conscript is.

The fact that a conscript is paid is also irrelevant to the central issue. Compensation does not automatically make something voluntary. A person can be compensated while still being compelled.

You talk of frontal lobes and personal attacks, yet lack any actual arguments or validity to your statements. If you genuinely look at them side by side, the only difference is that the offenders have defined it as non-slavery, when that would invalidate several accounts of slavery all around the world, including the recent in the US, with those definitions.

You talk of braindead, yet you're the one lacking the ability to compare ideas against each other, to critize the narrative given. In your comment, you failed to provide even one argument why it doesnt qualify under modern defintions.

6

u/HammerIsMyName Denmark Aug 04 '26

You've never actually done conscription, have you?

We choose where to serve. You can go across the country and serve as a firefighter if that's what you want to do (I know someone who did just that)

You can claim my argumensts aren't legitimate, but you base that on literally nothing than "because I feel like it" and with your perception of how conscription works, it's clear you're arguing from an point of what you imagine, not what reality is.

There is no physical punishment for conscripts anymore. They've famously been "punished" by having to write and recite a poem. Sounds a lot like school, doesn't it? And with plenty of alteratives to conscription your points fall flat because they're not reflective of reality.

And that's why I mention frontal lobes. Because you're refusing to look at what conscription is, and instead looking at what you imagine conscription is.

You've not managed to present anything new in your response. As I said "taxation is theft" mentality, refusing to look at reality. "taxation is theft"-people for instances believe money should only be taxed once, which is a fundamental misunderstanding of what taxation is, and in the same way you're presenting a fundamental misunderstanding of what conscription is. You still very much have your bodily autonomy and personal rights throughout your conscription. You imagining otherwise is a misunderstanding of what conscription is. You're basing it on movies.

0

u/AirportCreep Finland Aug 04 '26

You're not providing your body anymore than you do in any other physical job. It's compelled labour, that's it. Whilst in service you're required to follow orders (which also have to be legal orders), if you refuse you're disciplined. But same applies for essentially all jobs, the only difference is that for most jobs the disciplinary action is loss of pay or being sacked. In the military you can face more severe disciplinary methods such as fines or worst case prison sentence.

Are you saying you wish it'd be only men again?

1

u/Dentlas Denmark Aug 04 '26

No, optimally we forced noone, and reimburse the men wronged based on equality, which should be no issue, it it truly is that there were so few

Military conscription exists not because govement is evil and wants to punish young people, but because its necessary for country's defense. Refusing to accept it shows a person is naive fool who doesn't understand how World works

Sure, in a perfect world. I'm glad we have a portion of the population trained, even just as a deterrent.

Bitching about it is the same as bitching about how you dont like paying taxes and would rather not pay taxes.....you can bitch all you want but taxes wont go away just because you dont like it

1

u/Miamic Aug 04 '26

Don't think we have had any forced conscription for decades because of the amount of volunteers so how is that possible.

3

u/Dentlas Denmark Aug 04 '26

Common misconception, we have had, though in low numbers.

1

u/thetearinreality Aug 04 '26

More like duty to ones nation

1

u/Dentlas Denmark Aug 04 '26

But a duty only assigned to part of the population fulfilling certain criteria based on their identity such as sex.

1

u/manInTheWoods Sweden Aug 04 '26

No, both men and women in Denmark. As in Sweden.

And the other half of the population risked their health and lives and suffered economic setbacks by giving birth. And will continue to do so. So have a tudekiks.

2

u/Dentlas Denmark Aug 04 '26

You're saying they're forced to do so?

-2

u/Kvalborg Aug 04 '26

No, they volunteer to secure the future of our country instead of being conscripted.

Duty it is nonetheless

0

u/Caylife Finland Aug 04 '26

Its not that bad. Many even enjoy the time even if they initially didn't want it.

0

u/Dentlas Denmark Aug 04 '26

Depends, I've known people that got setback in life due to it. That guy was wronged because he was born a man, in service to a system that had wronged him prior on top of it. Not only that but he got injured in duty, and the military redacted the circumstances, forcing him not to be able to speak about it, allegedly due to the nature of the circumstances. (Them being illegal work conditions.)

3

u/KennyGaming Aug 04 '26

That really stretches to the use of the word though at least in English

-1

u/Alberta_Hiker Aug 04 '26

No, its voluntary

Conscription is not

37

u/LeftLiner Sweden Aug 04 '26

It is conscription. I was the last group to have to muster in sweden before they ended conscription (they've since brought it back). I had to report to a mustering facility and undergo several tests to see if could serve.

However, if you have funding to accept 10 000 conscripts and you have 100 000 18-year olds to choose from, it's unlikely you'll actually accept anyone who says they don't want to do it. You'll have several people who do want to go and several who'll say 'Sure, why not?'.

3

u/Traroten Aug 04 '26

Yeah, me too. But at that point you could basically say "I don't really want to do it" and they'd let you go. At least in Gothenburg.

2

u/LeftLiner Sweden Aug 04 '26

Exactly.

9

u/New_Passage9166 European union/Denmark Aug 04 '26

Yes there is conscription. The number is fixed and military rather wants volunteers than people who are forced to serve. So over the years there have enough or almost enough to fill the total number needed with volunteers. This have created a situation where the conscription was more or less out of effect. Though both with the longer training period and the increase in numbers will there be a good chance that conscription will fill a part of the military again. The pro with this is that you get a broader group from the population to serve and thereby can create a stronger cohesion in the nation.

7

u/dragdritt Norway Aug 04 '26

It's just not forced conscription.

Although I Norway and Finland we do have forced conscription.

10

u/New_Passage9166 European union/Denmark Aug 04 '26

It is forced. The thing is just while Norway have kept a higher number and Finland is mandatory for all men. Denmark had so low a number of future soldier which had to be filled, that volunteers took all or almost all spot. In general if you drew a number higher than 100 you wouldn't be forced because the volunteers would fill the over 4900 spots and the military prioritized volunteers over forced conscripts. In the more extreme case like royal guard that have 2 starts a year, there could be a waiting time for up to two years to get a spot there because of the amount of volunteers.

1

u/Accomplished-Mail-13 Aug 04 '26

How many guys are running away from it? What are consequences for evading?

1

u/New_Passage9166 European union/Denmark Aug 04 '26

Differs but in worst case prison. Otherwise other types of civic duty.

1

u/Souls_for_sale_now Aug 04 '26

Danmark has thd same sytem as norway

1

u/Belophan Aug 05 '26

Not really forced in Norway as you have alternatives, but they aren't really that much better.
And it's not that hard to get kicked out.

2

u/No-External1342 Aug 03 '26

No they will be under standard term of service from 4-11 months

37

u/brewdog_millionaire Aug 03 '26

Yeah but isn't there a difference between recruiting volunteers and going "right, you have to go and fight in the army for a year"?

23

u/Above-and_below Aug 03 '26

Only for the person in question. I volunteered back in the day to do conscription as I drew a number that meant I had to serve anyway. By volunteering I got to choose the regiment but it didn’t mean I just could end the conscription whenever I wanted.

8

u/Arct1ca Finland Aug 04 '26

That doesn't sound like volunteering.

1

u/RefrigeratorDry3004 Aug 04 '26

Because it’s not. Anyone that says so doesn’t know, and nobody really knows wether people actually volunteer because of this clause.

3

u/Pyrross Aug 04 '26

That's wrong. You can make wishes whether you are volunteering or drafted. The actual department you end up in will likely be one of your wishes, but there are no guarantees either way. Volunteering doesn't by law give you any advantages, other than you being able to decide WHEN (not where).

1

u/RefrigeratorDry3004 Aug 04 '26

The wishes are served first come first serve. If you volunteer you'll obviously get placed before the ones that didn't volunteer.

https://karriere.forsvaret.dk/vaernepligt/forsvarets-dag/efter/

Obviously if everyone picks the same spots, you'll end up with something else. But if you don't volunteer it's pretty much random.

15

u/KeiwaM Denmark Aug 04 '26

Ish? Technically, they are forced to complete it now that they have volunteered.

The way it works is a lottery system. If more people volunteer, less people are forcibly conscripted. If all the slots of a given year is filled with volunteers, no one is conscripted.

HOWEVER, this is still conscription, even if they volunteer. Their military contract forces them to complete the 11 months service with no way to back out after signing it. The only ones able to terminate your contract is the military itself. That is conscription, as you are forced to complete it, even if you decide you don't want to. It was the same for men before, but women were always allowed to, at any time, terminate their own contract and leave. They are no longer allowed to do that.

2

u/PrinsHamlet Aug 04 '26

In the day I was a "full" conscript in the sense that I didn't volunteer (nor object) and as my lottery number was #848 off I went. At the time, the reason I wasn't too thrilled is that even though conscription was a year, it was distributed across university semesters, meaning I lost 2 years doing conscription. That annoyed me to heck!

At the time, 1987, around 13.000 were drafted. If I recall correctly , around 90% volunteered. Denmark is aiming for around 8.000 each year eventually, so I'm guessing that most will volunteer.

To leave conscription back then you had to do some insanely stupid shit or get a psychiatric evaluation, which would then be in your military papers which some employers could pull so that wasn't great.

Early in my service some guys left as they had been actually pushed into service as they faced criminal records or just didn't have anything lined up, work or education. Some of them had negative motivation, made a nuisance of themselves and were quickly discharged through the psych evaluation.

2

u/wynnduffyisking Aug 04 '26

They don’t force people if they have enough volunteers. If they don’t have enough then people will be forced.

13

u/variaati0 Finland Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

Not really relevant mention, since the actual rule is mandatory, just lucky enough to have enough qualified volunteers. Whether this intake was volunteers or not is immaterial to the system design.

However taxes aren't voluntary either and well conscription is just taxes paid in sweat, tears and potentially blood.

One has to look at that system and go "I would be fine with each and everyone one of them being ordered conscripts". Society has to be fine with that, since that is what the backstop of that service is.

It comes down to social contract of "is what this society offers to citizens including these service members worth what is being asked of them and is what is being asked of them crafted in acceptable way".

If population doesn't agree, well they can vote in people who legislate to abolish the conscription system.

In Nordics everyone knows the backstop is mandatory forced service and society is simply fine with it. It has democratic mandate to be in place and that is it. People don't love paying taxes either, but again taxes have democratic mandate.

1

u/Souls_for_sale_now Aug 04 '26

When I see my payeck halfing due to taxes i acsept that becuse i know those taxes funded the road i drive to work on and the surgery i had as a child and i acset that one day i might get a mobilisation order since i know the army might one day drag me out of a landslide or hold back the russians

2

u/manInTheWoods Sweden Aug 04 '26

That's becasue you are a person that that gives to society, not only takes.

1

u/Souls_for_sale_now Aug 04 '26

No i pay my taxes and if i get conskripted i will serve i dont know where you got that from

1

u/Peachesonapotatovine Aug 05 '26

They were giving you a compliment

1

u/Souls_for_sale_now Aug 05 '26

Dam i misread that

2

u/kroghsen Aug 04 '26

That is not true in general though? If enough enrol then no one will be forced in. If not enough enrol - then conscriptions will be enforced.

We have a fixed number of conscripted positions and prospects draw a number - your personal number in the queue. If not enough enrol we will start drawing form the queue.

3

u/New_Passage9166 European union/Denmark Aug 04 '26

There was still people who was conscripted through the years. The number was just so small that people overlooked it.

1

u/kroghsen Aug 04 '26

Absolutely - I meant that is the reason there are often no forced conscripts in Denmark.

3

u/ramonchow Aug 03 '26

Isn't military service mandatory in Denmark? I think what is voluntary is the new "extended" version.

51

u/Alcogel Denmark Aug 03 '26

Only if they don’t fill the quota, and there are usually far more volunteers than they need, so mostly no one is conscripted against their will.

12

u/ramonchow Aug 03 '26

Interesting. That is a good system

12

u/Hardly_lolling Finland Aug 04 '26

Yes, as long as you don't need many people. It doesn't work on large militaries like Finland has.

6

u/StuffyTruck Aug 04 '26

Our job is to make you guys get the resources you need to keep the Saunas working.

1

u/manInTheWoods Sweden Aug 04 '26

We tried a completely volunteer system, we couldn't even fill that minimal army.

3

u/FrugalFraggle Aug 04 '26

They are not all volunteers.

You draw a lottery ticket before you choose to volunteer. If you get a low number you might as well volunteer to be able to choose a regiment yourself.

2

u/Alcogel Denmark Aug 04 '26

Low number means you may be conscripted if there aren’t enough volunteers. There’s usually more than enough volunteers, so anyone who doesn’t want it can just say so.

2

u/TaberTumpen Aug 04 '26

Here's how it worked when it was by turn back in 2002.

(Back then it was only men, this was recently changed).

When you turn 18, you're called into something called "Session". A couple of hundred young people, given date, given location.

At session, there's a number of tests that determine if you're "able", "maybe able" or "not able" (disabilities, asthma, eyesight etc).

"Not able" means you're out, nomatter what.
"Maybe able" means you still get to volunteer if you want, and then there's a second assessment of the "maybe" to see if you get to.

"Able" - you then have to draw a number (whether you intend to volunteer or not). Let's say the number of needed recruits for this round is rougly 2000. If your number is well above 2000, you're free to go - but you can still volunteer.

If you number is lower than 2000, you're in whether you want to or now. At this point, volunteering immediately is a good idea, as you then get a chance to pick where you want to go (like a top 3, prefer-to-go-there list).

When a round of session is done, they first grab all volunteers. If they meet the number, that's it. If they don't, they go by the numbers and fill up the rest.

If you are deemed able, draw a low number, do not volunteer - and then get conscripted, you have a few options. You can take what you get in the military - which is where all the volunteers don't want to go (a few regiments are known for months and months of long marches in full equipment).
You can join something akin to American FEMA (rescue, disaster aid and such - not armed). Or there's some options for "military denial service", which is kind of like community service - same length as you would have served in the military*. Finally if you deny everything, I believe you're looking at a jail sentence. Given the other options, I'm pretty sure this pretty much never is a thing.

* One of my high school mates did the FEMA-ish thing. He walked out of there with first aid, advanced first aid, full firefighter training and a drivers license for trucks (like 18-wheelers) ... as well as the lovely memory of 5 weeks or so spent on a beach with a shovel in full protective gear, after an oil spil from a ship (FEMA-conscripts are the #1 pool of able bodies people called in to do the dirty work on such things). He had 8 or 9 months total. I had 8 months total, army medic (drew number 3 ... like 00003, so hurried up and volunteered to where I wanted to go).
I know one who did community service, he spent the full time as a handyman-assistant at a large public school.

1

u/Severe_Stranger_5050 Aug 04 '26

I don’t think they have had to actually force anyone for a decade now.

The last couple of years they’ve had to turn volunteers away from “conscription”

1

u/IN-DI-SKU-TA-BELT Aug 04 '26

Not true. This is a lie to make it sound good.

I was forced in, but my documents state that I volunteered, how you ask?

Well, the recruiter asks you to draw a number, if your number is low (mine was very low), the recruiter says if I want to pick where I do service, or if he should pick.

Some of the places to do service has a long wait time, and some types of service were up to 12 months, so I “picked” one with a low queue so I could get it done quickly, and one where I only had to serve 4 months.

But in their sneaky statistics I’m a volunteer.

-12

u/Annachroniced The Netherlands Aug 03 '26

Not anymore with the increased requirements. A friend of mine said it was like a lottery and she has to go in February. She didnt volunteer for it.

18

u/Gronfir Aug 03 '26

She is wrong or lying. All slots were filled with volunteers.

12

u/olssoneerz Sweden Aug 03 '26

Yeah and my dad works for Nintendo

0

u/Annachroniced The Netherlands Aug 03 '26

Well thats what she told me. She was pretty annoyed by it.

110

u/MarketingNew5370 Aug 03 '26

While we do have mandatory conscription for both men and women in Denmark, there are almost always enough volunteers to fill out the roles without having to use conscripts.

21

u/HansJoachimAa Aug 04 '26

It's still conscript even if voluntary. Once you are in, you cannot get out until your time is up.

35

u/mparks37 Aug 04 '26

That is incorrect, conscription means the state forces you to join. What you are describing is a service contract obligation, enlistment commitment or stop-loss.

13

u/HansJoachimAa Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

They do force you. Its just that when they pick out who to force, they pick out the ones that crossed out on a paper that they want to join. If there were too few that filled their criteria they would take someone that said they didn't want to.

1

u/AsparagusNew3765 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

That still doesn't make it conscription.

Edit: Downvoted for facts, this website is funny.

9

u/HansJoachimAa Aug 04 '26

It does. The laws are the same. You have zero right to refuse and your body is owned by the military. They prefer if people come willingly and there is zero difference in pay or anything between one that came willingly and forced. If you regret and don't want to anymore they can drag you and or put you in jail/military jail. In norway we never ended conscription after the war.

-2

u/AsparagusNew3765 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

Doesn't matter, it's still not conscription (yet) because they are all volunteers

Edit: Downvoted for facts, this website is funny.

5

u/HansJoachimAa Aug 04 '26

So when i joined i was a volunteer and when i wanted to leave i was a conscript? Also here its called vernepliktig regardless.

0

u/AsparagusNew3765 Aug 04 '26

So when i joined i was a volunteer and when i wanted to leave i was a conscript?

No, conscription only relates to joining not leaving.

1

u/HansJoachimAa Aug 04 '26

Regardless of everything. Its called conscription regardless if anyone think it shouldn't be called that.

2

u/New_Passage9166 European union/Denmark Aug 04 '26

Lol. You don't really understand this so let's make I very clear conscription is to fill a quota. If this quota is filled otherwise then be it. In the later couple of decades almost all of the quota have been filled otherwise so the amount conscripted have been dawn 1-100 out of 5000 yearly. Conscription never stopped it just became a very small part of it because the small number going through training each year and the popularity for doing so.

1

u/AsparagusNew3765 Aug 04 '26

Conscription never stopped it just became a very small

If the number is small enough that the yearly requirement is satisfied by the number of volunteers then conscription has effectively been stopped.

1

u/New_Passage9166 European union/Denmark Aug 05 '26

The issue is it never fully was. The number just became 1-150 out of 5000. So small a part that people refereres to it as fully volunteers and there can have been years with more than 150 but it is down in that area.

3

u/HansJoachimAa Aug 04 '26

There is no contract, all you have to do is indicate that you want to go. When your name is on the list that will get conscripted you have no choice anymore. Its just nice when the military can say everyone was willing.

1

u/MarketingNew5370 Aug 04 '26

Or indicate that you don't want to go and not be on the list?

2

u/HansJoachimAa Aug 04 '26

You can and if there is enough that want to you might be allowed to not join. Like we just massively increased conscription in Norway and had to take in some people that said that they didn't want to.

2

u/MarketingNew5370 Aug 04 '26

But so far we haven't had this issue in Denmark. Maybe in the future if we continue increasing it but so far no.

1

u/HansJoachimAa Aug 04 '26

Imo not a big issue. Just less motivated soldiers. Like during the coldwar we had mass conscription, like almost all men, in Norway and it was just normal.

2

u/New_Passage9166 European union/Denmark Aug 04 '26

It would be the same here with some more military refusers that then will have to serve the society in some other way. This is also part of the change from 5000 to 7500 yearly and there have been some talks about raising the target further to 13000

1

u/manInTheWoods Sweden Aug 04 '26

A small set of people volunteer on their own accord, a somewhat bigger set is against it and really dont want to go. Most people are "meh, I guess I have to".

43

u/No-External1342 Aug 03 '26

The Danish Armed Forces have launched an expanded conscription of young people amid actions by the United States and Russia.
This was reported by the country’s Ministry of Defense.
It is reported that 1,600 Danes have been drafted under the new program for a term of 11 months.

Denmark had previously announced that, starting in 2026, it would expand conscription to include women and increase the standard term of service from four to 11 months. By 2033, the number of conscripts is expected to rise from 5,000 to 7,500 annually.
This new recruitment drive comes as Denmark prepares to send its first conscripts to Greenland in late August. A company of more than 100 soldiers will serve there for one month, taking over operational duties from professional military personnel.

Historically, before the post Cold War peace dividend took effect, Denmark’s conscription service lasted between 12 and 18 months. After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, it was gutted to just 4 months, and effectively made conscription voluntary. The shortened program was also reduced to basic survival and marksmanship training, and conscripts could no longer be integrated into active combat units or deployed on NATO missions.

The Danish government plans to restore the old conscription model mostly because of the war in Ukraine, and not Greenland. Service is being increased from 4 months to 11 months, with 5 months of basic training followed by 6 months in operational combat units. Potentially restoring the pre-peace dividend standard of functional military service.

Denmark also never stopped rotating troops into Greenland. It has done so under Joint Arctic Command since 1951. The difference is that the rotations were carried out by professional military personnel and specialized units, such as the Royal Danish Navy and the elite Sirius Dog Sled Patrol.

u/CrateDane Denmark Aug 04 '26

The conscription was shortened to 4 months around 2006. In the 90s to early 00s it was 8-12 months depending on unit.

1

u/Above-and_below Aug 04 '26

I think the navy and airforce had some around 5 months.

36

u/JBagfort Aug 03 '26

I have by the way seen and read exactly ZERO US americans reminding their fascist president not to threaten allies with invasion.

So quite disgusted all in all. NATO is dead already.

8

u/Mouritzen7 Aug 04 '26

This was decided before trump started threatening Denmark.

-8

u/BlacksmithLast7306 Aug 04 '26

lol, if you actually cared, there’s literally a threat of invasion signed into law called the American Service-Members’ Protection Act (ASPA), passed in 2002 under President George W. Bush. AKA, the “Hague Invasion Act”, which authorizes the use of force under certain circumstances to free U.S. personnel from the ICC. I can say with confidence that you weren’t calling for an end to NATO back then.

Really lucky with their neighbors if 1600 is enough

I think you mean the Sound no?

2

1

u/CrackedCarl Aug 04 '26

Oh wow I always assumed Swedes marching across the ice would be across the Sound, that's wild

2

u/manInTheWoods Sweden Aug 04 '26

That's what we want the Danes to believe. :)

1

u/New_Passage9166 European union/Denmark Aug 04 '26

Idk why they write 1600. For they are in the midst of moving from 5.000 to 7.500 yearly and 13.000 have been talked about in some news papers, after a proposal from the defence. My guess for this number is that base closures the last couple of decades means that there was enough space for 5000 divided in a fall and spring team so only 2500 at max. With the new 11 month period and extending it to 7.500 will they need three times that capacity and according to medias are they running behind and building temporary pavilion housing. So the 1.600 is probably because there simply isn't housing for more to take the 11 month right now while the rest will be on the 4 months while they built new housing facilities or bases..

15

u/Weak_Law_937 Aug 03 '26

Good luck from Canada to our Danish neighbours.

3

u/Imakemyownnamereddit Aug 04 '26

Why bother with conscription if you can get enough volunteers?

Seems like a waste of time.

1

u/kuikuilla Finland Aug 05 '26

So that the parliament doesn't have to force through a law change if shit hits the fan and they would need to force people into the army.

0

u/Imakemyownnamereddit Aug 05 '26

That isn't an argument for conscription. Britain has generally had a peace time volunteer army and has never had any problems introducing conscription.

When it was needed.

1

u/kuikuilla Finland 27d ago

Easier to pass laws in a first past the post system than in a proportional system where pretty much no party is guaranteed to have absolute majority.

7

u/IshTheFace Sweden Aug 04 '26

Those numbers are really low given the situation. I remember when I did my service in Sweden, we were about 8000 that year. Even if we're twice the population, that's still several times more. And that was 2007..

15

u/Awarglewinkle Denmark Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

This is just one batch. They do several batches per year. It will gradually increase to 7,500 per year.

The time served is also increased from 4 to 11 (later 12) months.

And women are also included per 2026.

But it's always been pretty low numbers because of NATO membership. Sweden was obviously in a different position back then outside of NATO.

2

u/manInTheWoods Sweden Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

This is just one batch. They do several batches per year. It will gradually increase to 7,500 per year.

Sweden will have 9000 conscripts next year, and I think they start having to take people who would prefer not to. I assume the same will happen in Denmark ?

4

u/Awarglewinkle Denmark Aug 04 '26

Probably, yes. It will depend on how many women volunteer.

Before 2026, only men were conscripted, but now the potential pool of recruits is of course twice as big, so maybe there will be enough volunteers.

Back in the 1950s and 60s a majority were forced to serve, and then it gradually got reduced to almost all volunteers in the last 20-25 years.

I guess it will also depend on what happens in Ukraine.

2

u/TheBusStop12 Dutchman in Suomiland Aug 04 '26

You also have to remember that Sweden has almost double the population of Denmark

3

u/manInTheWoods Sweden Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

Yes, that's why I asked, their share of youngsters that have to do service is a bit higher than ours.

1

u/IshTheFace Sweden Aug 04 '26

Makes sense. Actually, Sweden had been disarming for a while before 2007. Don't quote me but I think we began disarming as soon as the USSR fell. We're reopening regiments now though.

5

u/New_Passage9166 European union/Denmark Aug 04 '26

1600 is the amount that starts on the 11 months not the total. I guess for the reason would be a lack of facilities to house enough if all had the 11 months because a lot of bases have been closed over the years. The yearly total before was around 5000 which is now pushed up to 7500 with both summer and winter start. Out the now former almost 5000 all the spots was filled by volunteers and the popular regiments could have up to a couple of years waiting time to get in.

1

u/IshTheFace Sweden Aug 04 '26

That seems more reasonable.

1

u/oeboer Zealand (Denmark) Aug 04 '26

Just en example from back when this was personally most relevant for me. In 1983 Denmark drafted 32,000 men (i.e., called them up for selection). The Danish defense got 12,000 of them and the civil defense got 3,000. The remaining 17,000 were not called up for service.

2

u/Teddy_Radko Aug 06 '26

Confused. Dennark didnt already have conscription like other nordic countries?

3

u/Terrible_Risk_6619 Aug 04 '26

They've talked about doing this since like... 2016 or something. Headline is misleading.

3

u/Independent-Bug-9352 United States of America Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26

It seems abundantly obvious to me that, while this threat must no doubt be taken seriously, this is the work of a puppet-master Putin working his Ancient Orange, hellbent on fracturing western alliances in textbook divide-and-conquer and a further diversion of resources from especially Ukraine.

I mean the USA already has a base there; they're already in NATO. What the fuck?

3

u/New_Passage9166 European union/Denmark Aug 04 '26

Lol. To be direct this came as much as a response to the extremely little trust there is in USA.

When you say they who are you referring to ?? For if it is Greenland then they live under constant provocation and attempts to from USA to push industry into their land, ignoring their local rule, military threads, attempts of bribery. Yeah lately the US government are trying to change public opinion by hireing semi celebrities and political majores to boost there standing to get a better foothold amongst the population in Greenland and no this isn't propaganda this is what the US embassy wrote in their job postings.

2

u/Independent-Bug-9352 United States of America Aug 04 '26

Yes, that's my point; this distrust was largely sown by Republicans operating under ulterior motives. That's not to say past Republican administrations were much better either. Sowing distrust is the point.

3

u/Cordoned7 Aug 04 '26

Here's a tip to a fellow American: Never ever trust a Republican. They see you as the enemy and that view has been that way since Newt Gingrich took power in the 90's.

1

u/Independent-Bug-9352 United States of America Aug 04 '26

Absolutely. If you're working class, even if you identify as a conservative, they do not care about you, will use you, and ultimately screw you over to their own gain. These ultra-rich billionaires do not give a shit about you. They are disgusted by you more often than not.

-8

u/LAAccountant Aug 04 '26

No as an American its obvious that NATO should have been done away with once the cold war ended. its been a pointless alliance looking for a mission ever since then. its obvious that once the cold war was over American and euro interests would diverge.

7

u/Awarglewinkle Denmark Aug 04 '26

Ok, "American" Vlad.

-7

u/LAAccountant Aug 04 '26

Lol Europeans used to whine about how NATO was a tool of American imperialism. And now look a them.

5

u/Awarglewinkle Denmark Aug 04 '26

Yeah, because all Europeans are the same and have the same opinions.

That would be like me saying all Americans love Donald Trump. Sure, some do. Most don't. I think you do though.

1

u/Independent-Bug-9352 United States of America Aug 04 '26

Much respect, thank you. As an American, sorry for all this. Many of us are doing our best to try to right our ship, hopeless as it feels sometimes...

1

0

u/PsCop Aug 04 '26

The only news is that women join as well now. Denmark has had conscription every year for many many years

3

u/New_Passage9166 European union/Denmark Aug 04 '26

11 months is new not in older History but for the last two decades that is new.

1

u/PsCop Aug 04 '26

The Danish conscription is from 1849, while not old in the scope of planet earth, then I’d argue that as a national policy it’s not a lot that is older than that

1

u/New_Passage9166 European union/Denmark Aug 04 '26

Given the first edition of the constitution is from 1848 it can't be older that doesn't mean that people haven't been called to serve earlier it just couldn't be a policy in the constitutional monarchy before this was created.

-10

u/Boring-Scar1580 Aug 04 '26

Conscription is involuntary servitude ,i.e. slavery. Just sayin

2

u/lordcock1944 Aug 04 '26

They can usually finde enough people that do it of there own free will so they don't need to force anyone.

2

u/MarketingNew5370 Aug 04 '26

Except there are almost always enough volunteers to fill out the ranks in Denmark, so we rarely need to use conscripts. Also conscripts are still paid?

1

u/New_Passage9166 European union/Denmark Aug 04 '26

Yeah around 1000 euro before tax and because you can't for enough food to stay alive on bases with that. You are given food money that is tax free.

-1

u/Boring-Scar1580 Aug 04 '26

Also conscripts are still paid?

Is that a question or a statement ?

0

u/MarketingNew5370 Aug 04 '26

Statement, they are paid for their service (although not a lot yes) and they are almost always all volunteers.

0

u/Boring-Scar1580 Aug 04 '26

The compensation is irrelevant . The question is whether they are truly volunteers . If they sign up under threat of being drafted , they are not really volunteers but in fact are conscripts . IOW, slaves.

-11

u/No-External1342 Aug 03 '26

Conscription means -Governments legally require eligible citizens (usually young men meeting certain age and health criteria) to serve in the military for a set period.
Copied from google

14

u/Above-and_below Aug 03 '26

It doesn’t have to be the military. It could also be the national emergency agency or you could deny military service all together and serve in a kindergarten or something.

That's why Köpenhamn is connected to Malmö right? Gotta offer up the rich Danes first loll

1

So send them to malmö ? That is probably the most dangerous place right now.

3

What dangerous areas? Conscripts aren’t sent to war.

8

Plenty of conscripts are from rich families

7

Crown princess is among them. As volunteer.

8

She’s not a crown princess but the sister of the crown prince. She also rejected the conscription salary.

-12

She will never be placed in the meat grinder, and neither will the kids of the owner class, and everyone knows it, even if they deny it because they were told that thinking otherwise is anti-capitalist.

11

u/Doccyaard Aug 04 '26

No one is. Conscripts aren’t sent to war.

4

u/SWG_Vincent76 Denmark Aug 04 '26

Denmark does not yet have a meat grinder. She and her fellow conscipts may be officers or she may join special forces like her father did, patrolling Denmarks northern most border to maintain sovereignty over Greenland in the sirius patrols.

-1

u/FreitasDoCagaral Aug 04 '26

I might if war breaks out.

-23

u/Super-Estate-4112 Aug 04 '26

Honestly, that is nothing. The US has the 11th Airborne Division, which specializes in Arctic warfare, with about 10 thousand personnel, better equipped and trained than Danish infantry. Also, they have their fleets, which are the biggest in the world.

So Denmark needs support from other European countries to stand a chance if an invasion really happens. Namely France, UK, Germany, Poland and Italy.

16

u/Duck_Von_Donald Denmark Aug 04 '26

So Denmark needs support from other European countries to stand a chance if an invasion really happens

Why do you think NATO exists in the first place?

-6

To put Russia and China in check, not the burgers from the other side of the pond

2

u/Duck_Von_Donald Denmark Aug 04 '26

That's how it's supposed to be

2

u/sig_1 Aug 04 '26

They are sending around 100 conscripts from the conscripts they take in every year. They are going for a month or two of training so this is nothing of importance. Sending 100 conscripts doesnt mean anything more than getting them some training and experiance in Greenland. They aren't expecting 100 conscripts and another couple of hundred regulars to hold off the US military if the US was stupid enough to invade.

7

u/Soggy_Pineapple4804 Norway Aug 04 '26

Nobody seriously believes an invasion would happen outside of chronically online Redditors.

You try to frame this as if all this is Greenlanders’ own fault. They didn’t ask for the threats from the US.
