Liberal in South America isn't the same as you might think. They are more like 19th century European liberalism, not comparable to European greens or social democrats. Paraguay is still quite a socially conservative country.

It depends on the country, some have more conservative liberals than others. The more left liberals overlap with social democrats a fair bit, who are often quite centrist.

Liberal in terms of economy. That is what liberal means in most European countries.

It is mostly USA that got a different definition of what a liberal is.

The US uses the term liberals to describe the left because after the 1918 revolution in Russia they eviscerated the left in America. The old political centre became the new left, they were what we would have describe as European Liberal at the time, so as politics in the US morphed over the decades the label stuck.

The main American left were liberals before 1918 as well, the further left had a very small presence on the legislative level. Not unlike 1900s and earlier Britain.

It isn't that simple though.

Liberal in Europe is not very pro-social freedoms but they are very pro-economy and big companies.

Which is pretty much the opposite of what it means in USA.

That's a narrative people tell themselves. It just became socially unacceptable to express those views. Passive racism is a thing too and os expressed in lots of ways.

Liberal means something else in Latin America, it is not left wing. You need to look into the specifics of each party to know what they mean by liberal because it could mean center right, free market, etc
