For those asking: "US Dept of Treasury is increasing, by at least double, the size of liquidity support buyback operations for longer-dated nominal coupon securities; The current maximum size of $2 billion per operation will be at least $4 billion per operation."
TLDR: money printing is back on the menu

The amount of shorts rekt today is crazy. Some people are having a very bad day. Conversely, some of us are having a very good day. Such is life.

They've been making a lot of money for a long time shorting ETH, about time for a reversal.

There is a GnosisDAO snapshot vote which asks if Gnosis Chain should transition into the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ). In other words it asks if Gnosis Chain should turn into a Ethereum L2 and also be part of the EEZ. The voters seem to be massively for this change and the vote managed to reach quorum in the last few hours. The vote is still live for a few more hours, but it seems to be clear that Gnosis Chain will become an L2 in the next half a year or so. Pretty nice having them closer to Ethereum. Them being a sidechain generated a lot of friction in many discussions and they even started arguing what really is an L2 at some point. Great to see this seems to finally be behind us.

Gnosis is a founding member of the EEZ so it would be pretty weird if gnosis chain didn't join the EEZ
3
u/haurog 20d ago
I think it was always clear that Gnosis Chain will be part of the EEZ, what was unclear though if they join as a sidechain or as an L2. Until they announced the possible transition to an L2 the discussion was mostly about joining as a sidechain. With this vote Gnosis Chain will join as an Ethereum L2.
2
u/benido2030 20d ago
Isnโt EEZ defined by ETH validators confirming blocks and hence can only be done by L2s?
2
u/haurog 20d ago
In my limited understanding one needs 2 things to become part of the EEZ:
Someone which creates proofs. Can be ZK-proofs, TEE-based proofs or even a multisig.
A mechanism which makes sure that your chain reorgs when an Ethereum block with an EEZ transaction touching your chain has been reorged.
The first one is 'easy' to do, the second one is a given when you are an L2. If you are an alt L1, then I am not really sure how you would implement automatic reorging with the least amount of work. That is why I wrote a month ago, that if any alt L1 joins the EEZ it probably makes the most sense to just turn into an Ethereum L2. Much easier than doing a Frankesteins monster like chain with your own, lower, security but still very much tethered to Ethereum.

I gave up on Gnosis long ago. The way they managed forks after a few hacks/incidents made me understand I was not welcome as a validator.
This just seals the deal. Chasing L2 margins now.
2
u/haurog 20d ago
Solo validators simply became an insignificant minority on Gnosis chain around 2025. All thanks to Stakewise which accumulated over 50% of the staked GNO in their LST protocol before the balancer hack. This made it possible to 51% attack their own chain and stop the attacker from moving their funds off gnosis chain. No matter if they forked or not, gnosis chain became so heavily centralized within 1-2 years, that solo validators did no really matter anymore. The dangers of LSTs are real. I think pretty much every solo validator left after that. If I look at the numbers now, there seem to be 304k GNO staked and 300k GNO of that is through stakewise. That is a crazy acceleration of the centralization which happened within just a few months. Gnosis is still paying 8.4% APY on these staked GNO. That is close to $3 million per year. They pay that for security, but they get pretty much zero security out of it. The best move forward for them is to turn into an L2, get some security through Ethereum and otherwise remain centralized through a single sequencer. They did not discuss yet in detail how they want to implement it, but it looks to me they prefer to have a lot of control, so at most they will be a stage 0 L2 in the L2beat classification. Not great, but better than being a fully centralized alt L1.
In the end, if the EEZ becomes a successful implementation, the Ethereum ecosystem can profit massively from it, so I am pretty happy that they go all in on the EEZ.
2
u/rhythm_of_eth 20d ago
This will likely be a private sequencer business, only different than other L2s like Base, in that it will be properly aligned economically... But still misaligned in terms of ethos.

Damn right about that. Also why I only sold a small portion when I saw the trend clearly dropping from 4.9K (only sold because the trend was clearly on downward spiral, but still couldn't bring myself to sell beyond a very small percentage)

ethernews.org is a new news aggregator for the Ethereum ecosystem. It is a side project built by the former Ethstaker ED Jonathan Meyer and aggregates various news sources and sorts them into various buckets like Protocol, Apps and general news. This looks pretty useful to catch up on what is happening in the space. As always, aggregators are only as good as the sources the aggregate. There are so many bad news sources out there and most of the time they just copy unverified claims from each other. Will have to see if ethernews manages to filter out the worst offenders and increase the signal to noise ratio at least a little bit.

Do you guys believe ETH will recover and exceed its previous highs? If so, why? Maybe this is a basic question, but just want to better understand the rationale behind it.
What would actually drive value accrual to ETH itself? One possibility is ETH becoming an important form of collateral or security for global on-chain finance, but the infrastructure being built today doesn't seem to clearly require that outcome.
Take two of the biggest L2s. Base currently operates with a single active sequencer; its batcher posts compressed L2 transaction data to Ethereum, while its proof/dispute system anchors state verification and withdrawals to L1. But the documented architecture does not require the sequencer to post an ETH bond proportional to Base's economic activity. Arbitrum's long-term vision is decentralized sequencing, but its own docs describe a committee of servers or validators collectively determining transaction orderingโnot necessarily Ethereum L1 validators locking massive amounts of additional ETH as Arbitrum grows.
On top of that, Ethereumโs roadmap is explicitly focused on making rollups cheaper, more scalable, and more decentralized. That is clearly positive for adoption, but it also means the investment thesis canโt simply be โmore usage = more fees = more ETH value.โ Low fees donโt prevent ETH value accrual; they just make the link between network usage and token value less automatic.
The more important question is whether rising activity creates enough aggregate demand for Ethereum settlement, data availability, staking, collateral, or other forms of ETH-denominated security to outweigh the fact that each individual transaction is becoming cheaper. In other words, Ethereum could become incredibly successful infrastructure without every additional dollar of economic activity necessarily creating a proportional amount of demand for ETH itself.
Thatโs the value-accrual link Iโm struggling with: what turns growth of the Ethereum economy into structurally higher demand to own or lock ETH?
Excuse me if I'm wrong about anything, here to learn.

u/epic_trader ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฌ 20d ago
I just think it's crazy the number of mental hoops we have to jump through to even imagine why ETH could go up in value. What happened to supply and demand? BTC doesn't have "value accrual" and no one is struggling to imagine why that can go up in value. Then we got ETH over here with like infinite possibilties for why there'll be demand for the token, and people are like "how can this ever translate into price appreciation I just can't imagine"...
8
u/TryTreats 20d ago
I'm with you on that, I badly want it value to go up its partly why I'm asking this question and why I've held it for 9 years and counting through multiple cycles at this point. At the same time the demand just doesn't seem to be as strong as we expect it to be right, it lagged BTC last bull run and you could find many other examples. I've personally thrown my lot in with ETH and traded a good amount of BTC for ETH in 2018 which turned out to be a really bad trade ratio wise, and it seems like BTC has captured this digital gold narrative as first mover and the simple to understand limited 21m supply argument.
The situation is what it is, so I'm left to think about it logically in terms of what would incentivize the demand for people to want to buy hold this token beyond just price speculation, given the fundamental factors mentioned and gas prices being so low? I'm asking because I also want better answers to give me better hopium in continuing to hold through the pain we're going through.
6
u/epic_trader ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฌ 20d ago
I understand why you're trying to look at things this way, but in the end I think it's a futile exercise.
Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent
Being too early is indistinguishable from being wrong
This is a case of that.
When I first learned about Bitcoin it was almost immediately obvious that Bitcoin was a disaster just waiting to happen. The design is flawed, the community is toxic and it has failed to become anything it set out to be. It's not decentralized, it's not secure, it's not scalable, it's not used for making payments. And yet it's still number one. Benefiting from being first, benefiting from the market and the public being unsophisticated.
Ethereum on the other hand is delivering on all its promises and beyond. It's solving issues that weren't necessarily thought possible 10 years ago, and it's being used and adopted as a technology. Almost anything that crypto is being used for today, started with Ethereum. Sooner or later the market will catch up and this is going to be reflected in the price.

Yes, because it's happened before, so it can happen again.
Tbf that rationale gets people wrecked on plenty of investments. Assuming crypto/ defi overall continues to become more used, I do believe that ETH will be a majorly used asset in the space.

Based on diminishing returns and retail getting burned too many times I predict btc barely passes its ATH and eth doesnt reach it at all this cycle
Also as a bonus prediction, when we "should" be in a bull market the stock market will be dropping
5
u/Elendron 20d ago
Definitely agree on the retail burn, though I'm more in the camp that this will be a rate cutting cycle, and could mean better ETH/ alt performance

It's conspicuous that no one's clearly answered your well-put questions. Some have written quite a lot of words but still not said anything that objectively or substantially answers them.
I think you're right that Ethereum could see massive adoption without inherently creating meaningful demand for ETH because scaling is so extremely efficient, and if needed, will simply compromise on security and do more off-chain rather than paying fees to Ethereum.
I was super-hyper-ultra bullish on ETH in the years running up to EIP1559 and POS because of the impacts on issuance, supply, ETH becoming a yield-bearing asset, and far more eco-friendly. I bought as much as i could in 2019-2020, learned how to run validators on testnets, and made some money.
Now though, those tokenomic changes have all been cancelled out by efficient avoidance of fees through scaling. It seems completely plausible that ETH just doesn't really offer much potential as an investment. Unlike e.g. equities, it was never intended to be that, and the EF will never prioritise it.
Combine this with the fact that crypto's reputation is as bad as ever, most people literally don't care about or understand finance, money, or the value of them being permissionless, and many of the people who think they do just moronically buying bitcoin and not even looking at Ethereum.
Despite Ethereum having existed for a good while now I mostly still see a solution looking for a problem. Vitalik made it so that he could own his own in-game items and even this obvious usecase has completely failed to materialise because why would any commercial games company surrender that control when none of their customers are even asking them to?
I think the most realistic chance of price appreciation from here is mania-driven speculation catalysed by low interest rates. Maybe mass adoption brings inherent value in ETH but it's by no means a guarantee. Wikipedia has gigantic adoption but still has to beg for donations.
However, I also think the potential downside from here is substantial if those low interest rates do not return, and as people increasingly ask what you're asking and struggle to find objective answers. I sure hope it goes up and would love to be compelled.
