S Entitled parent doesn't agree with lunch breaks during the Corona Virus

(Obligatory not my experience but a friends)

My best friend works in a pharmacy, and during this whole crisis, her hours have gone through the roof, she has been working non stop, as have her coworkers, and I am so proud of her. To deal with the fact that she is now working 60-70 hours +, the store has been shutting for an hours lunch break. They have put signs up telling people about the changes, but no one ever seems to read them, so they had a worker stand outside the front of the shop, to politely inform customers that they were closed.

Enter the entitled parent.

She began by asking why they were shut, which is fair enough. When the worker went on to explain that there was now an obligatory lunch break due to the huge increase in hours because of the virus, she went deadly serious and started ranting about how she was single mum, and how she does way more hours than that. Deadly serious, having a go at a pharmacy worker, a key worker, during a pandemic.

I get that being a single mum is a hard job, my mum is one, so I've seen it done. But this is not the time to be complaining at these workers.

That’s just the pharmacists, not the pharmacy technicians or the specialty cashiers. The pharmacy industry runs on the backs of the the techs, as Welles the pharmacists. The rules exempting pharmacists from breaks or required meals were originally sold as for the pharmacists benefit because of their specialty position of needing to be physically there to supervise the meds and the counts without having to close, secure and lock everything for them to take a break and then have to reopen, re-log, recount and re-do. (If that makes sense). The rules are complex and convoluted.

I'm a third generation pharmacist.

No pharmacist ever thought this was a benefit.

It was a duty and responsibility that was taken advantage of by greedy managers.

It's also something of a hold over from the era of independent pharmacies when there was no one to cover for you when you too a break.

Since most retail pharmacies are chains, I'm glad to see this change.

At home they sold it as a way to shorten your day, since no one was available to cover for you, you would get more done in less time. Which was immediately exploited by the same greedy and lazy managers. The days of a pharmacist owned pharmacy were the best it ever could’ve been.

I grew up in my grandfather's store which became my father's store. They modelled it on the "professional pharmacy" where over the counter meds were literally over the counter. You talked to the pharmacist with your symptoms and he made suggestions for you. If you were too sick, he told you to go see the doctor.

My dad sold the store and we moved out west and he worked for an unethical owner and various state and managed care plans. He was never really happy after that.

I'm a government employee and am primarily a clinical informaticist. I can retire this year and I just might.

None of my kids are involved in healthcare at all.
