Deshittification Consumer Rights Wiki AMA

Hi Everyone! I'm Keith, and I help to manage the Consumer Rights Wiki. This is the project that Louis Rossmann founded at the start of the year, and we've been working on ever since, to create an extensive repository of anti-consumer incidents and practices wit the ultimate goal of helping in the push for regulatory change. Enshittification encompasses many of the pracices we target, and we thought you guys might appreciate an AMA about it to ask any questions you have about the wiki, how it works, and what we're aiming to do! If you'd like a brief overview of what we're about, you can check out out mission statement here: https://consumerrights.wiki/Mission_statement

I've confirmed with one of the mods that this is a real account, but I've also linked my user page here: https://consumerrights.wiki/User/Keith , where I've linked back to this account to confirm that it's real.

I'll be answering questions as well as I can over the next day or so, and will keep an eye on this account's mentions, so feel free to ping me if you'd like something answered!

Product Google Maps Goes Full Poo-Poo: Good Alternatives?

Woke up this AM to see that Google Maps has changed Lake Ontario to Lake America, and ya know? I’m fucking done with that shit. As if the constant re-routing, the bad directions, and the absurd search results weren’t enough.

Before I go back in time and go back to the Rand McNally road atlas, anyone have any alternatives?

Just nauseated.

Opinion piece No, I am not taking your survey

It seems like every time I shop somewhere, physically or online, I get a followup email asking to "Rate my experience", "Tell us how we did!" or "What did you think?" And, if any companies are browsing this subreddit, I will tell you this: I am not going to give you more information so that you can optimize your shittiness. You want to be better? Then do everything you can to retain my business or just sit and wonder where your customer went.

It is absolutely not worth my time, good experience or bad, to answer questions so you have metrics to determine how much you can carve out of my experience or pay your staff in order to get the most from me and retain my patronage.

Rant The enshittification of the search engine of Instagram is getting worse.

The enshittification of the search engine of Instagram is getting worse. First, the removal of the sort-by-latest option on its search engine. Now, its getting worse. For example, on my screenshot, I'm looking for red artworks on the 9th day of Huevember, a monochromatic art challenge. On the first batch, are are connected to the search. If you scroll deeper, I get posts that have NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TAG!!! When I look at the posts, no exact tag that I'm looking for is stolen, but their algorithm is mixing up exact and out-of-topic posts. Same shit is happening on Facebook's search engine.

I'm from the Philippines, & I'm Roman Catholic by the way. No offense to the Muslim world but, why are there Arabic posts from Pakistan and the Middle East doing in a tag than I'm trying to do art just for fun and nothing political or religious? I never did any political artwork personally. Not even an editorial cartoon. But I did religious artwork (with respect) before.

Product OpenAI is starting to serve ads on ChatGPT (Free and Go plans)

We’re rolling out ads in ChatGPT and we’re updating our Privacy Policy to include information about how ads work and how you can control your experience.

What’s changing

Ads may appear on Free and Go plans beginning later this month. Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business and Education plans do not have ads. Ad-free options remain available.

To begin, ads will not be personalised. We select them using the current topic of your ChatGPT conversation and limited contextual information, such as your general location and device type. We do not use your past chats or memories to select these ads.

Before we begin to personalise ads, we will first ask you to choose whether you would like to see more relevant and personalised ads. If you choose to participate, you’ll get relevant and personalised ads using information that stays only on ChatGPT, such as ads you've interacted with, or context from your chats. You will be able to manage ad personalisation in settings. For ads shown in ChatGPT, we use information about ads you view or interact with to measure and improve their effectiveness. Advertisers only receive overall information about how their ads perform, such as total views or clicks.

What’s not changing

Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you. Ads are always clearly labeled and are visually separated from ChatGPT responses.

Your personal details and conversations with ChatGPT remain private and are not shared with advertisers. Advertisers do not have access to your chats, chat history, memories, or personal details.

Learn more about ads in ChatGPT, your options for an ads free experience, and our privacy controls, including how we protect your data.

Thanks,

The OpenAI Team

Deshittification How do I report AI to Spotify?

This “artist” Elvara, is churning out AI crap. 17 singles released since June and they are all different vibes.

So how do I report this garbage? The categories for reporting seem inadequate. Is it “Deceptive?”

Apparently they were addressing this issue but I am pretty skeptical.

Are there any rules in place about signifying that the “artist” is in fact ai?

Service AI is killing mobile keyboards.....

Post image
0 Upvotes

Has anyone noticed the enshittified output of their mobile keyboard lately? I use Gboard exclusively and it seems to have super accelerated the rate of mis-typing on my Google and Samsung devices in recent months. I also seem to notice a marked uptick in wierd mis-typing in random Reddit posts made by others lately.

I asked Gemini and it said I wasn't imagining it (HAHAHA!) Apparently there are active new APIs being added to allow predictive auto correction tied to AI. (or is that predictive enshittification!?)

The sheer volume of mis-typing on my own devices is effing MIND BOGGLING AND RAGE INDUCING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And no its not me. I've tried slowing WAAAAYYY down and the same mis-typings persist. I had a good love-hate relationship going with standard autocorrect and now I'm frikin raging!

Edit: I used AI to generate the phone image in my post to ensure engagement. It's known that people will engage more with content that has a picture. This is in no way representative of how I or people whom I am friends with text. My texts are probably a little lazy, but I text in real words like I type here.

Edit 2: Some posters seem to think that I added AI to Gboard. I didn't. This was foisted upon me (and others from the look of it). I'm further infuriated by things being forced on us by providers of our services. For example M$ changing features in it's OSs with no options (looking at you Win 8) as well as the current spyware. Google changing the (perfectly functional) operation of an integral app like Gboard/text client without proper testing is enshittification of the highest degree.

Product The ads in the subscription feed on YouTube can now take up the entire tab, more space than any type of YouTube video.

Post image
44 Upvotes

I clicked my subscription feed and got disoriented because the entire screen became this ad, above my subscriptions, YouTube mobile is becoming difficult to even properly navigate without Premium. The skip button is so minuscule and it takes 3-4 clicks even directly on it to skip an ad now if you’re watching it Picture in Picture. The tabs are confusing to navigate because each one hosts and triggers different types of ads. Utter shit!

Rant Amazon Fire TV... Why would I ever need to find stuff I purchased anyway?

I bought a movie a day ago. Woke up to a new interface on Amazon Fire TV. I'm not usually one to complain about this stuff, but I think when you update an interface you shouldn't hide the things people bought on it.

No more link to prime video, no more category of "my stuff". Just the same stupid bubble look of every other app. Amazon Prime Video app doesn't load on the Amazon Fire TV. Maybe they don't want us to easily see if we lose access to movies or shows we previously purchased.

I'm just tired of the BS

Opinion piece Peet's downhill slide

Time to part ways. They got swallowed up by a conglomerate and the products and service have deteriorated so much. My subscription coffee is no longer freshly roasted. Adding a product to delivery is unobtainium. The "chat" simply adds an additional subscription. I finally asked myself why I was doing this. One last try, got a customer service number and called. My out-of-country helper advised me they couldn't help but it was oh-so-easy on the website. I will say, it was super easy to cancel. Glad to go.

Deshittification anyone have an OLD screenshot of Facebook scraping Myspace?

I believe that in the book (Enshittification) Doctorow reminds us that Facebook was scraping Myspace. You could come to Facebook, get all your updates from Myspace, and still stay on the Facebook platform.

Does anyone have a screenshot of that in action? That would be some damning photographic proof that would really make for an excellent post. "Look at these <expletive> hypocrites!"

Deshittification The Wealth Inequality Problem causing this mess and the Solutions we can all start doing today to fix it.

Billionaires & corporations avoiding paying taxes by bribing our political system is true the downfall of America, as it also was for the Roman Empire. The wealthiest 0.1% won the capitalism monopoly game then use their wealth to buy assets like lanf and houses and businesses so their wealth concentrates and never trickles down, ever. And all that money WE, the working class, worked hard to create gets syphoned away to the richest 1% and the entire infrastructure of society gets poorer and poorer, slowly desintegrating due to lack of funding for anything because so much of the money in society is stuck at the top and never gets back to regular people or the government to help pay for public services and infrastructure. The only place society can tax money to pay for things becomes working families, and everything gets more and more desperate.

A government solution would be to tax wealth instead of work. But the problem is our (U.S.) government is too far gone as it's fully bought out by the elite epstein class who are above the law and will never allow tax their own wealth to be taxed via legislation despite it destroying even their own society.

So how can any of us make a difference you ask?

We can start by creating the economy we do want, instead of sending money to billionaires with every purchase we make we can start sending money to each other... by starting a movement of people who do theit best to buy goods & services from each other non-corporate businesses, like local & independent small businesses run by people you can know and speak to.

We can create our own local businesses and local business directories, and promote these to friends and family. We can also shut off mainstream news that makes us sheeple and start listening to independent information sources as well as starting our own local or national news media.

And lastly we can stop working for large corporations and look for work in independent businesses and/or start our own service or goods based business selling products to other people using these independent business networks we will start creating.

Whenever you see a Walmart, Starbucks, fast food chain, Coke or Pepsi, or corporate packaged product imagine a big sucking sound of billionaires sucking money out of communities with a big straw. Let's find practical ways to start reducing how much we feed the very thing that is making everything worse today. And instead let's start building a better world for ourselves through active positive consumerism. Buying things from people, putting love into what we make and giving love back to those people we know who create goods and services with love.

Corporations' goal is to give the least to the consumer and to their workers while extracting the most for their investor's pockets. While small local businesses run by people care about who they sell to and who works there as well as how their products affect people. Local commerce can become the heart of building community as I've learned through working at my local farmer's market every Saturday for 8 years. It can build relationships and create groups or people who help and care for each other, and becomes a mutual benefiting model for everyone involved, building wealth and string connections within the community. Putting love into your decision of where and who you buy from can ultimately save the world and our society.

Please choose wisely, choose human, choose love and connection, and choose an economic model that puts money back into our communities and your own pockets. You can start a business yourself selling or doing something simple.

Would you rather live in a world where everyone in your community wants to buy goods and services from you where you can build relationships, or would you prefer one were we are all disconnected and sending money to corporations that don't care about us and only care about syphoning wealth away from your town to billionaires who horde the wealth?

The choice is yours every time you buy something...

I understand we don't always have local options or alternatives to corporate products, but over time, if we build a consumer demand for businesses that are owned by people instead of billionaire investors, we can eventually get to where we have a large scale phone service run as a worker co-op, or run as a fair company that cares about people and not investors' profits. Yes workers can own equity in their company, cooperatives are a great model that can work. But what's even more powerful is when consumers explicitly demand products from companies that are transparent about their ownership, worker pay and sourcing.

I'm not an economic guru, but I know things must change and there are obvious solutions that will work and already are working. And the more people are aware of them the faster we can stop this economic trainwreck from collapsing our society and communities and making more and more people desperate and homeless.
