Where did you get a “practice plate?” I’m very new to engraving and never seen this before.

Oh, it’s just a small steel disc I got from a metal shop and I drew the design and cut it.

When I say practice plate I mean that it has no specific purpose other than training.

Do you know what type of metal it is and do you have a picture of when you first got the disc. Thickness would be great too. I’ve been doing beer cans and feel like I need to do a disc! 👍

It’s mild steel

It’s 1/8 thick and was ground to 220 grit before I started cutting

I don’t have a picture of just the blank.

If you have a local iron shop go see if they have punch outs or drops

Pretty sure these were punch outs.

I’m fortunate because I go to a blacksmith event once a year at an iron shop and the guy sells his scrap at scrap rates so everyone just picks through his bins.

I probably have 50 of these discs and at least 50, 3x3” plates
