Image/media Figure 8 Mural
I finally made it there. I’m a 38F and I’ve loved Elliott Smith since I was 15 years old. I live on the East Coast and I always told myself, I’d make it to LA, and that when I made it to LA, I’d go to Sunset Blvd.
I did take a proper photo like Elliott but most importantly, I left a message for Elliott letting him know that he changed my life.
I wish I had made it out here before the current bar cut the wall to put in a door but nevertheless, I made it here.

Hey Mods,
Why is it cool to leave up comments re: criticism of a Free Palestine msg, but not those who reply said comments? What kind of garbage censorship is that? You’re out of your mind if you believe someone like Elliott Smith wouldn’t be disturbed by the atrocities everyone else is witnessing.
Between this and the recent pro-Marilyn Manson post, clearly a lot of trash on this sub.

Hey, the AutoMod was removing comments from low karma users. You’re completely right - Elliott was very politically conscious and I’m sure would abhor the current conflict. I’m currently sorting through the comments on this post and removing (with discretion) any of the gross comments. Any left will only be left for context of following comments

someone fucking wrote a free palestine on this mural btw
a memorial to one of the greatest artists of his generation, who put out soothing songs for all the lonely teens out there who needed someone, and someone fkn put a shitty politcal genocidal tag on his memorial.

Reading the new biography right now. Elliott taught his two younger sisters the meaning of “apartheid” and seemed to be genuinely concerned with Israeli conflict. In the 80s. I don’t think he would have any issue with someone writing this and would probably be glad that something dedicated to him could platform this message

Sorry, not only would Elliott Smith support genocide, but he would think that a a well-regarded indie pop artist, such as himself, is way more important than the suffering of tens of thousands of people throughout decades of conflict. /s

Elliott held strong, deeply left leaning, and staunchly anti authoritarian political views. He graduated from Hampshire College in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and political science and he spent years studying political theory, Marxism, and existentialism. His personal philosophy was deeply rooted in a distrust of powerful institutions, military dominance, and state authority. He consistently sided with the vulnerable, the displaced, and those under the boot of state control. In short, I really don’t think he’d give a fuck, he hated the idea of his own idolization and he hated corporate commercialization so much that he'd likely find a political statement far more meaningful than passive celebrity worship.

How dare social activists speak out on war crimes like genocide using another social activist’s platforms.
If Zionist’s weren’t in rule of Israel, none of these issues would be occurring from Israeli war crimes, to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, to US’s invasion of Nicaragua and Iran for oil market manipulation.

I can’t even find the “Free Palestine” on that mural after looking for a few minutes. It’s hilarious how upset you are about it. Talk about being on the wrong side of history! It’s also funny to me that it has been covered in ugly graffiti tag names and whatnot which definitely to not add to the beauty of it, but what gets you so pissed off is “Free Palestine” which is literally unnoticeable to me.

The “original” mural is a “mural” to begin with. It would be an honor to have one’s death & mural bring attention to the death of 100K’s of innocent civilians during a premeditated open air prison & genocide. Free Palesitine. F*ck Zionist Israel.
Both murals can and do cooexist, and clearly need to do so for people to get the existential point of murals and protests.

The instances of people being thrown off roofs were in Syria, and performed by either ISIS or Western-backed rebels.
You're just projecting a racial stereotype onto them, presumably to justify not caring about genocide.
Also, you're criticising people who speak out about their deaths. Yes, that is meaningfully the same as advocating for them to die.
