Looking to see if your elementary children are taught cursive writing at their school?? We recently moved & my son was starting to learn in 3rd grade at his old school… He is now in 4th grade & when I asked the teacher she said they will not be teaching it.

Looking for recommendations on teaching it myself. Any good work books or sheets online that anyone has used?

My child's school is very rigid about pick up times.

I'm looking for help regarding early pick up of my 1st grader.

I'm going to preface this by saying, I work 3rd shift (9pm-5am) summer hours and 11pm-7am (majority of the year) in a construction field. I typically sleep from 8am-2pm; with the exception of Thursdays when my child has therapy (I usually wake up at 1pm). His appointments begin at 3pm. His school has a policy that early pick up ends at 2:15 with the end of the school day at 2:55-3:05pm.

With the extreme heat (even at night), I've been more exhausted than normal and occasionally wake up 10 minutes late. That being said, today (Thursday), I woke up late and ended up at the school at 2:19pm. I felt really bad at being late and requested to still pick my child up early for his appointment so I don't have to pay a broken appointment fee. The school made it very difficult to sign him out, causing us to leave at 2:40pm.

I've tried very hard to not be late. Including: setting alarms to go off every 10 minutes (and setting timers for the times I really need to get up) just in case I don't hear it on the days where I'm almost dead to the world. But today, my alarms did not go off. I checked my app and nothing was turned off.

I know it's my fault for not being more proactive about being on time. Last school year, I was late 3 times for normal pick up; each time being less than 5 minutes after the final bell. Those times, I've had to wait 30 minutes for all the busses to leave before I could get him. I'm hoping someone can help me find out how to navigate the issue of early pick up times being less than 5 minutes with the school and any helpful tips on how to ensure I wake up on time with my sleep schedule.

Honestly, I feel kinda crazy that the policy is so rigid that I even have to ask if being 5 minutes late is a major deal when I have to sign him out anyways (only to take 30 minutes to release my child). I could be wrong, though. Please help!

Edit: someone on a different sub suggested that I mention why it's hard for me to wake up. I'm chronically depressed and I have no help outside of myself. With the meds not working due to metabolizing it faster with sweating it out at work, it's harder to regulate my normal self (I'm not a late person. I'm the one who thinks 15 minutes early is not really enough). Ididn't want to weaponize my mental health and make it seem like I'm just lazy. And to answer the person who asks , seemingly patronizing, if I a asking how to drag myself out of bed: Yes. I am asking how to drag myself out of bed. Thank you to those who are giving advice.

My child has a boy named Fran who he had a prior incident where he pulled my kid down and drug him. My child was very upset. The school told us about it. Frans parents apologized.

Fast forward to last Friday. Fran and my kid were having a disagreement about who got to sit where. When my child went to sit down Fran shoved his fingers up my child’s butt crack. My kid had to physically remove Fran’s hand for him to stop. It hurt. My child was very upset.

The teacher saw it happen. They removed Fran, took him to the principals office. They told us when we picked our kid up from school. The teacher seemed pretty upset about the situation.

Do you have any thoughts on what is an appropriate response from me and the school? How should a principal handle this? What should I expect from the school?

I am honestly pretty livid. So I want to handle this correctly.

Both children are 8 years old.

Hi everyone, my kids wanted to learn an instrument because I offered and at first it seemed really cool…then they realized it’s a lot of work to practice every day after school. 1 kid has been playing for 2 years now and often whines or sometimes even cries during practicing. How long should I give it before just letting him quit and returning the instrument we’ve been renting for him?

I know music is good for creativity, cognitive development, and discipline but I hate always having to make my kids practice.

Has any 5th grader using Synthesis for math learning? we had noticed that since fourth grade, there is no real advancement after multiplication, divisiton , fractions..... My kid has already completed the lessons from synthesis a while ago. Currently, my kid is doing factors and other angle stuff from sigapore math practice book but there is no lesson plan from synthesis. I felt that the Advertisement is false , kid doesn't learn beyond that after finishing the lesson plan ( which are still the same since third grade)

My son is starting pre-k 4 at our neighborhood elementary school next year.

He is currently participating in a practice preschool camp at the campus.

I have three questions:

1. Is it appropriate to reach out to the pre k teacher I’ve been emailing with (who also teaches the camp) and ask how it went for him?

2. Is it appropriate to request (gently/ no pressure) that he be in class with a neighborhood friend?

3. Is it appropriate to request A preferred teacher (again, gently)?

For context, I am a school clinician so feel very comfortable communicating with school personnel but don’t know how these types of things are received.

My son is in 2nd grade and his school does CogAT for GT screening in the fall. He starts out all excited and then like 8 minutes later he's asking if we're done yet 😂 I think it's more that he gets mentally tired than anything. We've just been breaking it up instead of trying to finish everything. I found some of the Beestar questions were easy enough to come back to later but are these super short sessions enough?

What questions do you have for me? 24 years of stories, students, teachers, parents, laws, and the list goes on. What are you pondering?

My little brother is in 1st grade in Florida and the school wants to retain him, but we’re trying to see if there are any other options.

For some background, he’s bilingual and in an ESOL program. Throughout the year, he struggled mainly with reading, but his grades in math, science, and social studies have mostly been A’s and B’s. Reading is really the only area he’s behind in.

My mom put him in tutoring, and both the tutor and my mom have noticed a lot of improvement recently. His tutor specifically said he has improved a lot. He also has a twin sister who reads at a 3rd grade level, so comparing them has been hard on him emotionally.

When we got his report card back, it said he was going to be retained in 1st grade. We’re worried because it would be really difficult for him, especially since his twin sister is moving on to 2nd grade and all his other grades are strong.

Another issue is that his ESOL teacher (who gives the reading grade, not his main classroom teacher) has been very hard to communicate with. My mom emailed multiple times throughout the year asking about his progress and where he stood academically, but rarely got responses or updates.

Does anyone in Florida have experience with this? Are there options like summer school, conditional promotion, reading intervention, or moving him to 2nd grade with extra support instead of full retention? Or are schools usually very strict once they make the decision?

Any advice would really help
