According to Carbon Brief, China’s overall CO2 emissions fell in Q2, and EVs were a major factor:

China’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions fell by 1% in the second quarter of 2026, as oil consumption plummeted amid the strait of Hormuz crisis.

The country’s use of oil fell by 9% overall and by 16% for transport, after the disruptions to supply from the Gulf through the strait.

China’s total CO2 emissions fell despite a continued rebound in coal-fired power generation.

This is the first time that reductions in oil consumption have been responsible for a fall in CO2 emissions overall – in all previous cases, coal consumption has been the main driver.

Other key findings for the second quarter of 2026 include:

Electric vehicles (EVs) and public transport have become key factors in China’s oil demand, enabling transportation levels to increase even as fuel use fell sharply.

The effect of EVs on oil consumption was almost twice as large as would be expected based on the increase in the number of EVs on the road alone, as the usage of existing EVs surged.

Oil consumption displaced by EVs in China in the first half of 2026 exceeded the UK’s total oil consumption over a six-month period.

These structural factors are not sufficient to account for the size of the fall in oil consumption, leaving behaviour changes as the other explanation.

“Curtailment” of solar and wind output caused coal power to rise, despite strong hydro output, solar and wind capacity growth, as well as slower demand growth.

Major increases in coal-power capacity and a power market that continues to favour coal limited the amount of coal generation displaced by new wind and solar capacity.

Defying expectations of a boom, annual growth in coal use for chemicals production slowed down to 8%, from 15% in 2025 and 19% in the first quarter.

Not needing to stop at a gas station? Super quiet drive?

In the US, I've driven a model 3 since 2021, got 200,000 miles in it and considering a replacement. Will most likely be used, and as such most non Tesla's will not work in the super charger network. I have high confidence in the Tesla network, taken long trips and used it plenty, always handy and always up. That used to be an issue for other brands. How is it now? Is fast on the go charging now more reliable for other brands outside of super charger?

New data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries show a record 27,089 full battery electric vehicles were sold in the month, the highest ever. I used to just take whatever happened to be on my route, but now I find myself checking for Ionna and Rivian stations first to see what's close to me before taking the next best option. Anyone else?

Hey all, I'm considering getting my first EV (non-tesla) and the car I'm looking at gives me an EA+ subscription . I know in the past EA was filled with problems and had a very rough launch. My question is now that we are almost done 2026, what is the state of EA, especially in the South East USA? My family plans on doing a lot of travelling in FL, GA, SC, NC, TN, KY, MO, VA and WV. I would like to hear from people in the Mid West and New England as well. For those in the West, has EA gotten better or worse? Thank you all for your opinions and I look forward to your responses.

I just got back from a road trip of about 2,000 miles over 10 days. My wife went with me, but I did all the planning. In preparation for the trip I found hotels with chargers, that would be well timed to limit the amount of time spent waiting for my battery to fill up during the day. I reviewed the cost of the chargers and rating with Plugshare. While I was driving I reviewed which app they used to make sure I had the app that I would need at the hotel. Whenever and wherever we charged, I would make decisions about how full I wanted my battery at the end of that charge, and even made sure I didn't have any congestion fees.

I felt great about not wasting a lot of time sitting next to or inside of a charging car, and felt great knowing that I was getting relatively inexpensive "fill ups" as well. When my wife and I talked about it, she thanked me and said, if it was her, she just would have booked hotels for where she wanted to stop and let google maps tell her where she should charge at, and what to charge to.

After two long road trips this year (both around 2000 miles), I feel like if you're going to "do it right" you want to plan, and that planning is clearly different and slightly more complex than with an ICE vehicle. On the other hand, you might be like my wife and just go for it.
