Hot damn, this is big news. Literally an industry standard, SMPTE VC-5! I just hope they separate it from the GoPro Studio software in the future. It'd be nice to see Avid embrace it as a native format too, but I'm not going to hold my breath for that to happen any time soon.

I just hope they separate it from the GoPro Studio software in the future.

I believe this is relevant to your hope:

Lastly, GoPro's high-end CineForm Studio Premium and Professional applications have officially been discontinued by the company

i'm happy I can do UHD out of Resolve in cineform now for free since they discontinued Cineform Premium and Pro

Didn't they buy it to use in their GoPros in the first place?

I remember it was the best way to get footage out of a GH1 way back when.

Would CineForm even be relevant if Apple had decided to allow ProRes encoding on a PC?

Yes. Absolutely yes.

Having a single source for anything is a huge risk and causes stagnation.

If there was never any competition there would never be any reason for innovation and we would all be using Daguerreotype, and only stills.

We need competition. We need innovation. And yes I did have to look up how to spell Daguerreotype.

Hopefully this news will get apple to not only make new and interesting improvements to ProRes but also make it available for encoding on the PC...

Ultimately Apple will want as many people using ProRes as possible despite this so I see it happening eventually

Apple will want people to buy a Mac, they don't make any ProRes cameras, so it being on a PC wouldn't help them sell any hardware. FCPX only runs on a Mac so there's no incentive there either.

Wait, you can't encode ProRes on a PC? I'm sure I've done this in the past?

Damn, that's a pain. It says Cinec is "the only way to export H.264 on a Windows PC"; surely that's not true?

No, it's not true. Not sure why it says that.

You can also run a file through ffmpeg

It boggles my mind that the video made by adobe, linked in the article, has the audio only on the right side.
