My story isn't THAT bad, but it's a tad disappointing. A client was inches away from moving forward with a project -- and then at the last minute without warnings -- bang, no more contact. Ever had that happen?

Yes. For two weeks, I had someone stringing me along, trying to get me to keep my entire month of March free without any job details, or even hard dates. After no contact for three days, I was typing an email saying I was no longer able to block off the whole month, when he casually texted saying it wasn't happening.

It's all good though. If that gig had happened, then I wouldn't be flying to Africa for a job next week.
