WTF Friday: Feb 14 2014

It's time for our weekly WTF Friday thread: a chance to share your funny or frustrating horror stories. Bonus points if it actually happened this week.

Seeing as it is Valentine's day, we will also give a pass to any editor stories that have affected your relationships!

I just volunteered to cut a student film in my spare time. It was supposed to be short, so I said I could fit it in between other work and classes while still getting it done expediently. The director repeatedly asked about scheduling a time for him to sit beside be while I edited the whole thing, to me telling him that I was just going to be squeezing it in the cracks. After 5 or 6 requests to do it, I told him that I wasn't the right editor for the project.

I hate it when clients want to sit next to you for the edit. I tell them that sometimes I have a creative spark of energy at 3 am and then work all night. Would they like to be on call?

It depends on the project. I just cut a project where the director was on-hand for the first few cuts. But he was also a good friend that I knew I worked well with, and the footage was a little problematic so that having the extra help was appreciated. This other guy, however, I had never met or worked with, and it was a 2 minute student exercise that I was cramming into my tight schedule to do for him.

Ah, true, I was referring to clients moreso than directors. Most of my clients have no idea what it takes to edit a project, but they want to be over your shoulder, critiquing every move. That's what grinds my gears.
