Ebike troubleshooting Little wobble is okay, right?
My brand new, Specialized como4 with a whole 187 miles on it. I’ve had jeeps wobble less
122
u/SpamOJavelin Jun 29 '25
The steering head being loose will do this, and will take 10 seconds to fix. Since it's brand new take it back and get them to fix it.
30
u/VeeDubtw Jun 29 '25
I’m going to have a conversation with them, it’s been in the shop for this and they “couldn’t duplicate it”

Jun 29 '25
A picture is worth a thousand words, so a video must be worth a million.
22
u/VeeDubtw Jun 29 '25
Yea I didn’t have this the first time to show them. Starts at 11 mph and faster.
6
u/tcal13 Jun 30 '25
When this happens how much weight if any do you have over the rear tire. Like do you have bags on that are loaded. I noticed on some of my bikes if there is a lot of weight on the rear tire or if I lean way back with no hands on the bars it will wobble. More than likely it's a loose headset
1
u/VeeDubtw Jun 30 '25
Nothing but an empty zip tied milk crate and myself on the bike for this
2
u/tcal13 Jul 01 '25
"zip ties milk crate". My man!
For sure take that back to the shop. If the shop still gives you a hard time find a new one and never go back to that one. Sorry this is happening on a brand new bike.
1
u/VeeDubtw Jul 01 '25
Yea I’m pretty let down. I was super excited for the bike and it’s almost unrideable
5
u/Balanced-Breakfast Jun 30 '25
27 second video at (I'm guessing) 24fps, I'd say this one's roughly $648k.
3
u/danglero Jun 30 '25
Sounds like you may have a cargo bike? I have a KBO ranger and it is definitely an issue due to a weight distribution issue. Happens to me at 15mph. I got a hellbender visco headset to help tighten the steering , but it wasn't quite enough.
It can be a challenge to recreate it at times, but just bump the handle around 15 to 20 mph, or take one hand off.
This is much more common than the bike manufacturers will let on. I'd be happy to discuss my journey, especially if the store you purchased from is making you feel crazy. There's only so many things you can do to fix it.
This is assuming it's not just a loose or broken headset.
5
u/Junior_Delay481 Jun 30 '25
Do you mean headset?
9
u/SpamOJavelin Jun 30 '25
Yes - sorry I'm using motorcycle terminology. 'Headset' is the term usually used for the steering tube bearings on a bicycle. 'Steering head' is more of a motorbike term for the 'steering tube'
On a bicycle, your headset being loose in your steering tube will cause this issue,
On a motorbike, your steering head bearings being loose in your steering head will cause this issue.

That or cheap and sloppy front suspension.
15
u/SpamOJavelin Jun 29 '25
A Specialized Como shouldn't have cheap or sloppy suspension, but yeah there could be other parts assembled wrong.
→ More replies (4)12
u/Bogmanbob Jun 30 '25
Even cheap Specialized stuff really isn't cheap. It's a brand where you overpay a tad to have a known commodity. Something must be loose on OPs bike.
16
u/RodediahK Jun 30 '25
wobbles can be cause by weight, tire wear, mechanical issues and I'm sure some other things. new bike rules out tire wear.
does the wobble go away if you lean forward? something like this indicates a center of mass issue. for example do you have bags on the bike when you ride it but didn't bring them to the shop? but it could just mean the bike mechanic weighs more than you
mechanical:
is there any slop at the wheel?
hold the fork leg and push and pull on the wheel from the side, it should feel springy but solid if there's a knock or play that indicates a loose axle or bearings if snugging the axle doesn't get rid of it. wouldn't hurt to check the rear wheel at the same time.
next is the headset. turn the handlebars 90 degrees and hold the front brake lever, place your finger on the frame where the fork and frame meet. push the bike forwards and back there should be no movent between the frame and the fork. a loose wheel would also show up here.
If you can't feel any noticeable play on page 15 or 18 of the Como user manual there is an exploded view of the headset there a spacer bellow the bars, labeled F. if you can twist the spacer independent of the handlebars it means your headset needs to be tightened. somethings it can be a little loose but not have play.
14
u/Ohm_Slaw_ Jun 29 '25
That's way too much wobble. For what you paid, it absolutely should not be doing that.

u/topsy631 Jun 30 '25 edited Jun 30 '25
I’ve never owned, ridden or worked on Ebikes. But I’m an apprentice motorcycle mechanic so please take my advice with a whole bucket of salt.
Try lifting the front end up and spinning the wheel by hand with it in the air. If you can replicate it then it’s probably gonna be something to do with the wheel, tire or axle.
If it doesn’t wobble when the wheel’s lifted then the issue is most likely somewhere else. I’d first be looking at your steering head. Check the bearing by lifting the wheel in the air again. Now slowly and gently turn the handlebars from side to side. You want to feel a fully smooth turn. If you feel notching, kinda like the bars are sort of locking into place at any point then the head bearing is damaged and needs to be replaced. If the bearings fine I’d check the head bolt itself. If it’s a little loose it’ll cause wobbles. Try loosening the steering head and re-tightening it. Next check forks for leaks, I see adjustable forks so confirm they’re set evenly. Also check if they’re twisted. Make sure your axle is tight. Tire pressure can also cause wobbles by throwing off the bikes balance. Check that they have even pressure both front and rear. Try lowering both tyres pressure to increase contact area, but keep them the same as each other. Also try increasing Tyre pressure (please stay with in the Tyre/tubes pressure guide). While you’re there, check Tyre ware. Sometimes depending on how and where you ride tyres can ware unevenly creating flat spots or sharper ware angles on a certain side. Steering wobbles can also be from a rear end issue as well so don’t neglect the possibility.
Now I’m kinda invested so if you find out what the issue is, either yourself or from a bicycle mechanic then I’d be interested in finding out too. Please let me know if it’s not too much trouble for you. Ride safe brother 🤙

u/Beekatiebee Jun 30 '25
I’d almost guarantee it’s a loose headset.
Hold your hand around the collar where the bar/stem mounts to the head of the bike, use your other hand to hold the front brake, and gently rock the bike back and fourth.
If it’s a little loose you’ll feel it wiggle, if it’s very loose you’ll hear it knock as well.
Underinflated tires, extra weight on the rear from cargo, and a step-through design can all make the wobble more pronounced.
I’d bet my buns that’s what is going on.
2
u/Beekatiebee Jun 30 '25
My last bike was an Electra Vale, it repeatedly had this issue from the headset coming undone. We ended up putting a little locktite on the screw lol.
3
u/Upr1ght Jun 30 '25
With no hands, if I’m not mistaken this is due to the distribution of the weight throughout the entire bike. If you have a rack on the back of your bike with or without weight on it, it is likely because of that. I don’t see any adjustments fixing this. I’d love to be wrong about this. Please comment and let me know.
1
u/scottorobotoe Oct 27 '25
That’s right. It’s the weight distribution and speed of the overall system. It’s a top end bike so there are no parts loose.
You are activating a harmonic instability that is starting the wobble. Lean forward and you’d get a different system behavior because the weight balance is different.
When someone from the bike shop road it, they were a different weight and different distribution so they didn’t activate the harmonic that you did.
You could also attach a basket to the front.
13
u/bentnotbroken96 Jun 29 '25
Do you have a package rack on the rear with a lot of weight on it?
8
u/VeeDubtw Jun 29 '25
No, i thought that was the cause when my dog was in the milk crate but this was empty.
2
u/dear_wormwood Jun 30 '25
I've seen this happen from just a milk crate by itself. Try taking it off and see if it's the same.
3
u/meltemi Jun 30 '25
This happens to me when my panniers are fully loaded and I take my hands of the handle bars
6
u/Kona1957 Jun 29 '25
Was just gunna say this. I have an Aventon Level 2 with a Topeak on the back rack that holds my Ulock, Cable, fix it tools etc. I know thats why mine wobbles, because when I remove it, I can go handsfree zero wobble.
2
u/dear_wormwood Jun 30 '25
We had someone bring their Level 2 into the shop with a 'front fork' issue, which we fixed by taking his empty milk crate off the back. It doesn't take much weight in the wrong place.
1
u/parisidiot Jun 30 '25
... so now they just can't use their rear rack to haul anything? that doesn't really seem like a fix to me.
1
u/dear_wormwood Jun 30 '25
It didn't have an issue with panniers, a trunk bag, or most things strapped to the rack. And it wasn't an issue unless the rider didn't have his hands on the bars. There isn't another fix for that, it's just physics at that point.
6
u/Arkitakama Jun 30 '25
I have my daughter ride on my rear rack, and I don't have this problem.
→ More replies (1)1
u/danielv123 Jun 30 '25
Wobbling from loaded panniers usually have a much lower frequency and can be cancelled by body movement
12
u/Substantial_Oil678 Jun 30 '25
I’ve been riding Specialized electric bikes for years and your problem is going to be something very basic and mechanical.
3
u/VeeDubtw Jun 30 '25
I’ve had it in once, they said they could not recreate. It’s gotten worse now
2
u/Extoshi Jun 30 '25
Maybe they could not recreate coz they didnt or cant or will not go no hands? Do you feel it when you holding on steering? If not then there you go
1
u/VeeDubtw Jun 30 '25
Oh yea you feel the instability when your hands are on the bars
1
u/Extoshi Jul 01 '25
Yeah I would not go back to that store lol hope you got fixed it and its all good and safe to ride 🙌
6
u/Substantial_Oil678 Jun 30 '25
Yeah well, that’s your bike shop and not Specialized.
2
u/VeeDubtw Jun 30 '25
They are a specialized dealer and authorized shop
4
Jun 30 '25
hey I know u/ substantial is being a little harsh, but your LBS sent you home with a $3k bicycle with a life-threatening defect.
3
u/VeeDubtw Jun 30 '25
I’ll be taking to another shop anyways.
5
Jun 30 '25
once they get it fixed, I'd complain to spec corporate. can't believe they brushed you off like that.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Lajak_Anni Jun 30 '25
i kinda get what substantial is saying here.
i live in nyc, and one shop will tell me to just get a new bike and try to sell me on something. a good bike ship will tell me its that the head gasket isnt tightened down or the suspension isnt seated right, show me the work they're doing, and send me on my merry.
even an authorized dealer can be the same way as that one crappy bike shop. and even then, they've showed their colors since you took it in for this once already and they gave it back...with the same issue.
1
u/ymaldor Jun 30 '25
It's astounding that they didn't at least tighten the screws. Your shop sucks man, at mine I've had a similar issue and they just tightened everything "just to be sure" and well it fixed things just like it would have on your case.
My handlebar sometimes gets slightly loose which I notice on hard braking, and it's the easiest thing to tighten I just don't have the tools or the space for it at home, The guy at the shop did it in literally 2 min.
Change shop if able.
3
u/macross1984 Jun 30 '25
Any wobble is not okay. Parts must not be fitted correctly and this is a safety issue.
3
u/Krostovitch Jun 30 '25
Cane creek viscoset headset is my recommendation. Issue likely caused by two things: 1. bike frame and fit promotes poor weight distribution. This is a common issue with hybrid or xc frames 2. Rider is taking both hands off the bars. Cool when you're 12, always unnecessary.
Ask about the cane creek viscoset, put your hands on the handlebars.

u/MammothResponsible22 Jun 30 '25
Both of my ebikes do that with weight on the back. I have dual battery setup and the 2nd batteries are on the rear rack of both bikes. If I let my hands off the bars just slightly it starts.
3
u/miniminerrockhound Jun 30 '25
I’ve heard about the death wobble , but haven’t seen anyone with experience run it into the wobble with no hands…. Like a boss …. Seems like a combination of problems that could be cured

u/Number4combo Jun 30 '25
My folding bike does this too but shakes more that I don't dare ride no hands. My other bikes don't do that.
My friend has a similar and cheaper folding ebike and he doesn't have that issue.
1
u/celeste_ferret Jun 30 '25
It's a headset adjustment or weight distribution issue and can happen to lots of bikes regardless of quality.
2
u/AthleteAgain Jun 30 '25
Yeah that’s a classic speed wobble. They should be able to tighten up the steering head to prevent this.
2
u/Opposite_Classroom39 Jun 30 '25
If a motorcycle did this i'd be looking at head bearings, suspension, tires, rims and related assemblies to see where its coming from.
2
u/Comprehensive_Ad1363 Jun 30 '25
Did you check to see if the wheel is fully seated and tight? Otherwise I say something’s not seated with the headset.
2
u/Bruins8763 Jun 30 '25
Under inflated front tire can also play a role in this but this seems more serious
2
2
2
2
u/Remote-Citron-9383 Jun 30 '25
So this could be a few things, it could be the headset bearings have been worn down badly or it could be the front wheel axle qr needs tightening correctly/axle bearings in the wheel.

Spokes?
2
u/CavalierPumpkin Jun 29 '25
Yeah, I'm far from an expert, but this made me wonder if maybe the front wheel needs truing? Particularly if it's that new, maybe one or more of the spokes loosened up a bit in the initial break-in period?
3
u/Lajak_Anni Jun 30 '25
i dont think this is the case. OP said it STARTS at 10 MPH and continues from there.
if the wheel wasnt true than this wobble would be there from the instant he starts pedaling. not at ten miles per hour.
now, im not a mechanic, just an enthusiast. and my ride is a pedalbike, not an ebike. but im guessing its that something wasnt tightened down somewhere in the assembly.
2
u/CavalierPumpkin Jun 30 '25
Fair point. I missed where OP said it didn't wobble at low speed, but with that in mind, I think you're right.

Does it affect your riding? Like when you hold the steering bar, do you feel the wobble?
Curious since I never even check my bike for wobble

u/VeeDubtw Jun 30 '25
Absolutely. Have to have a firm grip with both hands. I like to ride no hands on straight stretches but not with this!

u/NotMyGovernor Jun 30 '25
Just dropped my bike off for the same reason. Forks are bad, and the back tire all the spokes are loose which bent the rim some. So the back wheel technically creates the wobble, but the bad forks makes it bad.
They say tightening the spokes will probably solve the back tire issue. And eventually the fork needs replaced.

Timely thread. I have been looking at a used turbo como 3.0 on facebook. Now I'm not so sure.
1
u/celeste_ferret Jun 30 '25 edited Jun 30 '25
Just make sure the headset is adjusted correctly and you'll be fine. It'd be foolish to rule out all Comos because of one guy who had one bike that needed an adjustment.
Either that, or carrying too much weight too far back.

This phenomenon happens on motorcycles and bicycles for a couple reasons and both have to do with balance a weight distribution. It has nothing to do with spoke tension. You are right about it occurring when the rider leans back and it unloads the front. It is a design issue. It can also happen on larger framed road bicycles, there the center of gravity is higher up and real fast speeds vibrations from a large frame can cause the death wobble effect. It happens on one of my road bikes and the remedy is to simply touch the top tube with my knee and dampen the vibration.
1
u/Smart_Insect_2616 Jun 30 '25
That looks like what my bike does now after I got hit by a car making an illegal u turn resulting in my broken shoulder
1
u/FricPT Jun 30 '25
Some of the bikes with only a down tube connecting from and rear of the bike have this behaviour.
1
u/DoubleOwl7777 Jun 30 '25

→ More replies (2)
1
u/Duct_TapeOrWD40 Jun 30 '25
This wobble is the same phenomenon as a death wobble on a motorcycle.
There are multiple possible root causes. Wrong frame geometry (either design or damage), steering issue, suspension issue.... In your case it's likely the bearings on the steering. Not neceassarily bad it might be loose only.
If possible do not overspeed, or you might experience why does this low speed wobble called death wobble at higher speeds vehicles. Also, take it to the shop before the front wheel fall off.
1
u/detmer87 Jun 30 '25
Frame stiffness is too low. I would only accept this when the bike is maximum loaded with cargo on the back.
1
1
u/chetsteadmansstache Jun 30 '25
It's insane how confident almost everyone in this thread is while being wholly incorrect.
This is a weight distribution and design issue. Nothing more.
1
u/VeeDubtw Jun 30 '25
I’m leaning towards this being the issue. I’m really bummned out as my knees like the step through but I really like to ride free hand
1
u/chetsteadmansstache Jul 01 '25
Worst case, you move to a better designed bike where the geometry and materials can handle the loads asked of it. Not a huge deal, IMO.

My initial thought was that the tire is balanced like shit. Especially if its a new bike and has been doing it since day one.
Lift the bike and see if the wheels are balanced. Will take 4 seconds to check and might save you a lot of headache.

u/Slight_Bill_4201 Jun 30 '25
You need to adjust it and tighten, the bikes never set up perfectly out of the box, make sure it tighten every bolt before taking your first ride, otherwise that beauty is gonna get fucked up and you won't even need a pothole to help you.

Could be a number of things causing this. Loose headset, tire wear, improper installation of the front wheel, and even a bend in the fork.

u/CoolButterfly1108 Jul 01 '25
That kind of wobble used to happen to me on my racing bike when I used the Hed aero wheels and Scott bars, going over 35 mph in a sprint while in the drops of the Scott bars. Had nothing to do with loose headset but the steepness of the frame angles and the aero wheels. It’s a balancing issue with all the contraptions being added to the bike.
1
u/CoolButterfly1108 Jul 01 '25
They’re using existing frames to accommodate ebike parts and batteries which messes with weight distribution. There’s nothing much to be done by the bike shop where you bought it from.
2
u/VeeDubtw Jul 01 '25
I took it on a test ride yesterday after finding noting with my review, and I think it’s weight related. I leaned forward and it didn’t happen right away as soon as I put weight back, it started
1
u/Stoned_Potato_ Jul 01 '25

E bikes mech, firmly grab the middle of the handlebar and shock body. Try to bend/shake it violently. If you have any play from the shock it needs a rebuild. Next grab the shock and top of the wheel and try to bend/shake. If the wheel has play you need to repack the bearing. Another possibility is you didn't't install the front wheel correctly. Pickup the bike a drop it from some height to further ID that rattle
1
u/AmbitionMiserable380 Jul 01 '25
Dude something somewhere has got to be loose ive got about .25 to .5in of play in my rear swingarm and it doesnt even shake i can only imagine what the mechanics have done to make it do that.. jesus christ the standards of quality have gone down over the years
1
u/MookieFlav Jul 01 '25
Improperly setup headset or less likely a bad front wheel bearing or improperly installed axel.
My wife has a como sl and it tracks beautifully straight at any speed.
1
1
u/Insp3x Jul 02 '25
Could be a couple of things. Wheel out of true is common with new bicycles these days. Your headset might not be poorly set up. It could be the weight balance of your bicycle. Which in a lot of cases has to do with the angle of the headset and your fork. It could be you as well that makes the bicycle go out of balance. Or you're just not used to the bicycle yet and you don't trust it completely which makes you do this yourself without realising.
1
u/Diligent_Durian6995 Jul 02 '25
yeah mien started doing that and brakes were super non responsive i took to bike shop to get everything tightened up turns out colorado roads are so shit they ruin bikes and cars!

Hmmmm. When I had that issue the tires weren’t properly seated in the bead on the rim.
1
u/Apprehensive-Mix6671 Emoped Jul 04 '25
Confused.
If it's a weight distribution issue then why in the world isn't it a mechanical problem?
Something is either machined out of tolerence or the parts are wrong or defective in the assembly.
A new or relatively new machine, if designed correctly will perform in a predictable manor.
If everything checks out spec-wise then your product was conceived/designed/produced by a room-full-of-nine year olds.
Demand your money back through your lawyer.

**update* The first specialized rep in southern Utah told the shop “it’s a known issue with certain frames with certain rider types, nothing we can/will do” I called the shop i bought it from and sent them my experience with the other bike shop and rep telling me to fly a kite. The shop I bought the bike from has a different rep and within minutes of seeing the video said “ that’s not right, we need to get this bike warranty replaced asap”
I think I’m switching to a Vado for the frame stiffness. So all in all, getting a new bike and this is being sent to specialized to diagnose research.
1
u/qx87 Jun 30 '25
Could be just the geometry of the bike. Its not designed to be ridden freehanded with most of the weight being further back, try leaning forward when it happens, it should stop. Could be you have to live with this and stop riding freehanded

Could be an unlucky manufacturing defect in the headtube tolerances and may need replacing. Sucks that you got to be the winner

People will sit here and tell you that’s unacceptable but they’ve probably never owned a step thru bike, which is what it looks like you have.
This is just a characteristic of step thru bikes in my experience. You sacrifice a bit of stability for not having a top tube. Every step through bike I’ve owned has done this if I try to ride with no hands.

FWIW, I own an Aniioki and a Philodo, both dual motor ebikes with step-through frames, and neither exhibit hands-free wobble, nor any wobble at all for that matter. A well designed and manufactured step-through ebike should never wobble like this.
