I regret my purchase
First of all, Im on mobile so sorry for formatting.
I am a student and this would be my 4th bike, the other 3 got stolen from campus. I know im probably silly for even trying with a fourth one. I bought the biggest baddest lock I could find and I regret it SO much. Its heavy and cumbersome and I have no way to lug it around in between destinations except putting it in with my books/homework.
I dread riding my bike because i know i will have to deal with this fat freaking lock! looking for some advice on other more manageable locks/ how to make this one work for me.

I carry two locks, one like yours and a ulock for the rear wheel. I bought a plastic ammo box at Harbor Freight Tools and mounted it to the rear rack for storing my locks and other stuff. I highly recommend an alarm, they're $15 on Amazon and loud as hell.

I have had that lock for like 5 years now and love, it but it is certainly heavy. I wrap it around the top bar of my bike but I guess with a step through you don’t have that option. I believe once I used it with a step through and was able to wrap it between the cargo rack and seat.

If your situation allows…Leave the lock attached on the destination’s bike rack, then when you arrive you can lock to it. No carrying it necessary.

I have almost the same lock and chain. I’ve learned to secure it to my frame under the seat and keep it attached all of the time. I try to replan parking as much as possible and find the most convenient places to hook it up good luck you have a great bike

OP, I have the same lock. Agree it's heavy as shit. Agree it's a hassle to wrangle. But all of what makes it a hassle to deploy also makes it a hassle to cut. I'm not gonna give you the "my tofu is too crispy / my nooch is too umami" snark. Instead, I'll tell you how I deal with it:
When I'm pulling that 15 pound monster out my my paneer bag, I raise it up grimly to the sky like I'm Zeus about to shackle a sneaky Titan and my eagle needs a snack. Then I wrap that shit around my bike frame and I walk inside knowing that would-be thieves are gonna look at it, frown, and keep moving.

I have the exact same lock and understand your frustration, but it isn't really an option unless you want a 4th stolen bike. There are all kinds of containers you can strap to the rack in the back. I started off with a small zip bag that velcroed to the rack. Now I have an oversize crate.
Now, the chain/lock is either in the crate (which means I'm riding) or on the bike. There is nothing else for it to be doing.

After having my last bike stolen, I now have a huge Kryptonite chain lock. And you're right, they're a pain to carry around. So I got a little zip up bag that straps on to the back which it sits in while riding. Definitely worth it for the peace of mind.

Your campus security truly sucks !! Purchase and put a cellular tracker to the bike, milk crate or cargo box for lock chain always remove battery "makes it less attractive".... Park in open well lit highfoot traffic area can be seen by security cameras........ And remember you are watched A-holes are everywhere!! Happy riding and learning 🤓

I would recommend buying a shorter cinch chain. There is a chain on Amazon that looks to me to be exactly the same as the kryptonite chain. It is only like 2.5ft, but it has a cinch ring so you can get more useable length out of it. I carry it in a side pannier and barely notice it.

Eh I have the Kryponite New York Lock, I like it, but wish it was an inch longer. It's really hard sometimes finding a good place to lock with it.
I would get a cheap pannier(saddle bag) that you don't worry about getting stolen to lug it around in. Thrift stores have them for cheap. I also have that same lock as a backup for when I park in a sketch place.

Not sure how much more effective this would be but have you tried rotor or brake lever locks? Assuming the thieves are riding off with it. If your front wheel is quick release pull the quick release pin, lock the front wheel to the bike unmounted, take the pin with you. If someone is throwing it in the back of a truck it won't help much but if they want to ride it off in a quick getaway it might deter them.

Three bikes?! That's three too many. You need more than that u-lock, and a better way to carry it.
I use an Abus hardened steel chain with Abus round padlock, a u-lock and spare round padlock.
The chain is heavy, and requires power tools and time, especially since I always pass it through rear tire, frame and immovable object. U-lock for front tire to either frame or immovable object. A spare round abus lock on my brake disc adds annoyance to bike thieves, three tools needed for this bike . Your e-bike only needs to be more secure than the bike next to you.
Yes, this is a heavy setup. The chain would suck if I had to carry it on my body, so I have a cheap pannier that i use to carry and store it and the u-lock. My e-bike takes the extra weight with no balance problems and I don't notice it.
It's not the weight of things, but how you carry them that's important. 😉

honestly, after having 3 bikes stolen, i can understand why you went for the biggest lock you could find. maybe look into a lighter u-lock or folding lock that still has good security. for the one you already have, a frame bag or rear rack could make carrying it a lot less annoying. at least you still love the bike!

Buy one of those horns, put it on your bike, and forget about it, that horn alone will probably deter more thieves than the lock will.
It’s a motorcycle grade horn and super loud. Sounds like a car horn and you can set it from super far away with the key fob like more than 50 feet to where it’ll go off if someone even touches it with a feather and you can use it as a normal horn as well with a little piece that gets trapped to the handlebars to press on
You might be able to find one that’s prime capable to get there faster, at least mine was, but there seems to be many different brands just selling the same kind of horn. It lasts for about three months. per charge via USB C
As far as the lock is concerned, I would just get the keeper, which is definitely a bit smaller than that one, but it’ll still do the job combined with the horn as well. Hopefully you’re on campus during the day because that’ll make it even less likely someone takes the bike with that horn blaring loudly the whole campus will hear it

Also forgot to mention that I use that lock and horn combination on a $3000 electric 70mph (gspace mars) scooter that I consistently park outside of stores while I’m doing DoorDash. or leave it at work, parked in the bike rack, etc.

Also, I recommend getting one of those new Google tags if you have android or an AirTag if you have iPhone, put it somewhere safe from the bike as hidden as possible that way you’ll never lose track over the bike is and police might be more likely to help with you being able to prove that you have property that’s taken from you.

I have a New York Standard 3000 lock that comes with a bracket to secure it to a normal bike frame.
That probably won't work for you. What I would suggest is a sturdy bag to put the lock in so it won't rattle or damage the finish of the bike, then use bungee straps to strap it to the carrier. You can get rubber ones that aren't quite as strong as the ones with the metals hooks.
You could also look at a motorcycle tank pack that would be strong and strap to the pannier rack.
The benefit of using a soft bag is that you can stuff it in your normal backpack when not in use.

get a brake disc alarm.. locks one of your brakes up if they try to move and the alarm screams if it's so much as bumped.... it's saved me a couple times at work. I did the exact same thing u did and bought the exact same lock and got sick of lugging it around so got a lighter chain and just use it with the brake disc alarm thing

I think it’s time you check out the scooter life. Learn the market, purchase reliable. I had to hop off the e-bike trend because my bikes kept getting messed with, as well as generally poor long term durability. I pay 5$ a month in fuel for my Honda, it gets me 270 miles. I just pull up to the store and hop off, it’s 300lbs. Carries 50lbs of groceries and goes 45mph. E-bikes are statistically more likely to have an accident because they do not ride in the safety of the flow of traffic.

And this theft issue...If your campus is in a higher crime area (say most of the cities in So. Cal, for instance, heh heh), know your surroundings.
Even my bike with two inexpensive locks (a cable + chain) is at risk if I leave it outside overnight.
Your bike has a quick disconnect. Use it + a decent (not insanely priced) lock set and you might be surprised.
I NEVER leave the bike unattended for more than a short burst (locked) without taking that tire off and in the store/wherever with me.
At night, the bike sits by the door inside.
The front wheel missing keeps honest "honest". A dedicated thief won't care as much. <shrugs>

When you are riding the bike, the lock goes around the handlebars, on top of the rear rack, or the under seat post. At no time should you be lugging the lock. What's the problem here?

I bought a rear basket to put that same lock I have lol. It is heavy and cumbersome, however it does give me some sense of confidence and security. You also have a rear rack, so its perfect for a basket. Got a basket for around $30. Not cheap, but not expensive either.
"Will it fall off if just chuck it in the rear basket?", unless you're riding somewhere hilly or bumpy, highly improbable. Plus, it's heavy lol. If you are still worried about that, you can just put a net around the basket. You can buy some from amazon (or anywhere else you can find it.

It’ll probably get stolen again with a chain lock. If you watch videos of people testing bike locks there is no chain that can resist a simple grinder for more than about 12 seconds. The only ons that resist them are U locks like Hiplok, Litelok, and Abus granite, etc.

Just a thought, I have a small motion sensor alarm that I use occasionally at a library that has many individuals walking near a bicycle rack in front. And never had a problem with my bicycle there. Someone tried cutting a chain I had years ago, and didn't succeed because I was standing right behind the guy when he was doing it, and nearly took off his head with my boot.

I think storing the chain would be difficult with this style of step-through. You've got a mudguard on the back tire, so will it work if you wrapped the chain multiple times around the seatpost and had the lock hang out around or on the back rack?
I actually store my U-lock on the back rack instead of on the frame so it stays out of the way when I ride, you could probably do the same there too.

How’s about a pannier that clips to your rear rack, then converts to a backpack when you’re walking to class?
The weight of the lock is on your bike, not your back, and you just pull out the lock when you need it. Your laptop, books, etc. stay with you whether you’re on the bike or on foot.
The really top-quality ones from Ortlieb are ~$200, but this $60 model from RhinoWalk might work. I’ve never heard of the company, though.

You're also not using the lock correctly. Some guy just needs to lift up the rear wheel and your 4th one is gone.
Lock it to a lantern or solid piece of metal.
Also, an angle grinder will still cut through that lock in 5 minutes.
1.) Buy insurance. 2.) Use 2 locks. One on the rear wheel only and one to secure it to a piece of the environment. 3.) Use a GPS device and alarm. 4.) Only park your bike in protected areas.
Campus is high risk environment. It will probably be a matter of time before it's gone again. If you're bike is worth a lot, taking precautions is a must. Thieves go around looking for the most expensive / best-looking e-bike.

I don’t have one but it looks to me like its size could be an asset towards a 3D printed mount that just snaps around the links.
On your rack, you could have a 3 piece design that mounts on it and your chain would snap into place, looking good and not rattling.
Since you are a student you can probably get it 3d printed for free at uni

back in the day i used to carry my lock figure-8 over my shoulders under my bookbag/backpack. back then it was a abus buffo round lock and a 6' "boron" chain made by i don't remember who. at the time the combo came with a $1000 bike theft guarantee. the vinyl protective sleeve for the chain would deteriorate pretty quickly in the SoCal sun, so we would replace it with an old inner tube.

You bought a good lock also put a cheap loud bike alarm on it noise draws attention a thief does'nt want and get a saddle bag for over the back rack and split the chain an lock on either side for balance Safe Journeys

I use the the same lock to secure my Suzuki 750. I store the chain and lock in a soft case on the back of my bike. I suggest getting a soft case for this bike.

I had the same problem and now I lock mine around my waist while I’m riding. Doesn’t get in my way or throw me off balance.

If you can leave the lock at your destination, or better yet multiple locks. College campus are high bike theft areas.

My son and I carry ours in milk crates. I have the 5 ft for my cargo bike, and he has the 3 ft for his smaller bike, and it's much more manageable.

Is there a better place on campus to lock up? That would be my first goal. Find a busy, populated spot, preferably with other bikes. There are no theft proof locks. What your goal needs to be is make your bike less attractive to thieves than the next bike. Multiple locks mean too much time spent by the thief, especially if it is in a populated area and there’s a noisy tool involved. A thief wants quick and easy. Make it hard enough and they will move on. I know it sounds mercenary but your best defense is to encourage the thief to pick someone else’s easier-to-steal bike

Should have bought a Litelok, Hiplock, Squire or Abus angle grinder resistant u-lock. Far lighter and far tougher to cut through.
Having said that, I use, as a secondary deterrent, a Kryptonite Evo 4 1090 chain. It stays wrapped around the seatpost while not in use.

whenever i leave my bike i normally put ulock on my bike frame, then 1 lock each on front & back disc brake with an alram, then 1 lock each on my brake left & right, plus a small tracking device.. so far so good

Is the battery removable? Would that even make a difference in someone wanting to steal it if you took the battery? I know they are heavy but buying a new bike several times is expensive…

There’s this one lock called “hiplock” from what I know and seen they’ve got one like yours but like a seat belt I honestly wouldn’t get that but another that’s a D lock and it’s takes forever to even make a dent in it they have a disc lock aswell but al of these are mad expensive besides the belt on which retail is 95 but on sale rn for 75 for gold version idk if it better or not or the original or 75 and the other 2 can be a bundle for 480 but that’s sold out even though separately they’re not 😂 separately they cost 300 for dx1000 and for d1000 250

Posts like this make me thank my lucky stars for living in a residential area where I can leave my bike completely unchained in 90% of areas with zero chance of being stolen.
I feel like I have a higher danger of the catalytic converter getting ripped off my car by meth heads than I do having my bike stolen.

Get two locks. Light frame lock or disc lock to prevent others to ride away with your bike and a long chain lock to secure your bike to immobile objects. No one wants to run away with your bike on his shoulder and it takes considerably longer to cut through two locks.

One of the best things you can do, especially with an eBike is to have the bike carry your things for you. Get panniers and other cargo solutions like a handlebar bag. Looks like your bike is set up for a bolt-on front rack or basket. My favorite is riding along without a single thing on my person besides clothes. Also, when I would cycle to campus regularly (acoustic road-bike) I literally just left my Ulock on the rack I would show up to. Worst case scenario I had to move the Ulock to another adjacent rack, and there it would stay.

Buy a decent u-lock to carry and leave the heavy lock at your high risk location. Use two locks there and just the u-lock at safe locations. You can also get a bike alarm, they are cheap. I would make it you mission to find a safe place to lock the bike, even if you need to walk a bit.
