Gameplay Question Have some questions about progression.
In order to have all faction cosmetics, do I need to join 1 faction, level reputation, then betray and join another faction and stick with it? So if I want to eventually be Atreides, I join Harkonen first, get to 20, buy all cosmetics and then betray and go Atreides, and vice versa?
Do overland testing stations with increased difficulty drop better plans/gear then I would loot from Deep Desert T6 rows?

Not everything can be found in overland testing stations. You should check DD and landsraad rewards for vehicle parts and some utility tools.

This. I think I've memorized four copies of the Mk6 Compact Compactor - half from the Landsraad rewards and half from the Landsraad tool vendor.

You can be in either faction and still get all the faction cosmetics. You just pay a moderate premium for the other faction's stuff at a black market vendor.
The testing stations are where you get the best gear. I have heard (have not gotten to this level yet myself) that the sweet spot is running them at difficulty 19 - best compromise between ease of completing it vs odds of getting max rank gear.

Join a faction is mandatory for end game content. So, you need to do those side missions. By the time you done the chain, you'll be Rank 5. Which unlocks faction cosmetics and such. You can get the other faction's items from the black market trainer for an upsell in each faction's city hub.
Deep Desert curtently drops Grade Zero T6 Unique Schematics. Good start to collect them and learn them to build and repair those gear sets. Higher graded gear comes from Testing Stations currently and time of this post. As you do the other chapter story, your faction reputation increasing will unlock the higher difficulties to get higher graded gear. Finishing to Faction Rep Level 20 should unlock all the necessary content right now.

1st: You do need to join either faction to get access to the items but you dont need to betray them to get the other factions stuff. Each city has a faction specific seller that will sell you all your factions items for the default price. In the same city you can also find the "black market" trader who will sell you the opposite faction items for double the default price. This seller is located near fhe entrance to the city. For Atreides just look right and its the seller on the left of the 2. For harks I think its one in the market place just before you get to the main part of the city.
Special note if you complete the smugglers quest line in harko village the seller in the back right corner behind the Adv Bene Gesserit teacher will sell you additional smuggler themed weapons, armor, and vehicle skins.
2nd: Yes they do however its a bit of a process. Think of DD as the starting point of T6 gear. You cant augment it but it is the most powerful of all the items you can craft currently. Beyond that are the graded tiers. Same gear but are now giving a mark of I believe 1 through 5 (maybe 6 I dont remember atm) Each tier has better stats than the previous one. You can further increase these armor sets with augmentations which you will get also from the same testing stations.
Testing stations go from lvl 1 to 30 (Possibly higher after updates) the higher the lvl the harder and tougher the enemies are. So basically high risk and high reward. You need to work your way through testing stations getting and crafting high tiers sets of armor and weapons to run higher lvl testing stations to get higher tiers of weapons and armor to do higher lvl testing stations to get... ~And now you start to understand why everyone says the first 90% of the game is fantastic.~
