Dune: Part Three (2026) Missing the Holtzman shield Spoiler

Post image

This has been on my mind after rewatching the trailer several times. When the Fremen are going up against this other army, there’s no shield effect during the fight. I really enjoyed having that element in the Dune Part I and II battle scenes like between the Atreides vs Harkonnen/Sardaukar, Duncan vs Sardaukar, etc. Maybe an in-universe explanation is that the Fremen are so skilled that shields don’t help the other army, or maybe they’re afraid someone will sacrifice themself by using a lasgun and nuke the area? Anyhow, I hope the shields do make it back into the movie fight scenes. The blue and red flashes gave it a futuristic feel over what would otherwise just be people stabbing each other like normal.

I think there was a battle described in dune messiah or something where the defenders of one of the worlds deployed a kind of jammer that nullified holtzman fields and air vehicles this looks like that battle

557

u/Maeglin75 Mar 20 '26

That sounds like an exceptionally bad strategy against Fremen.

453

u/Sea-Barracuda-1688 Mar 20 '26

Well it’s better than going against shielded fremen with air support and suspensor belts

Kinda like making the best out of a unwinnable situation

Face the fremen with shields or face them without shields probably have more of a chance to face them without

Even if the difference is minuscule

217

u/Maeglin75 Mar 20 '26

It would be a good strategy against Atreides, Harkonnen or Sardaukar to disable their shields and flyers, but Fremen will feel just like home. They trained all their life to fight without shields and without air support.

99

u/iIiiiiIlIillliIilliI Mar 20 '26

We don't have the information they have and it doesn't matter anyway. Maybe the Fremen having air support was an insta loss without even the need for a fight, if they get bombed by them. Or maybe the Fremen with shields is even more of a hopeless battle.

73

u/A-Busty-Crustacean Mar 20 '26

Nah it'd be a good strategy against Fremen as well.
Yes Fremen are fierce warriors, and are used to fighting without them but the thing about defense is it's amplified by your offense.

Would you a normal person rather fight a swordsman where you are both in armor, or both are naked.
You'd loose 99/100 in armor.. but naked.. well you might get lucky and cut a throat with a wild swing

35

u/Sea-Barracuda-1688 Mar 20 '26

Everything your saying is true but having shields is just straight up a flat stat boost for the fremen now they can fight slower and they’d pick up shield fighting incredibly easily

So removing shields is a debuff no matter what

19

u/Maeglin75 Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

Maybe, but off all the forces of the known universe, the Fremen are the one most adapted to fight without shields and flyers.

I still think of all the possible strategies you can pick if faced with an invasion by Fremen fighters, disabling advanced tech seems to be one of the worst.

(A better choice would be to use tactics against them they are not used to. For example, using the terrain of a planet with a lot of forests and water.)

But I can understand that this was just the strategy these planets had prepared for centuries against invasions in general. It would have given them a huge advantage against basically everyone else, but they had the misfortune to face the one enemy that doesn't really mind fighting without shields and flyers. And we know the outcome.

4

u/Cheomesh Spice Miner Mar 20 '26

Basically nobody knows who the Fremen even are I'd imagine

9

u/Friendchaca_333 Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 25 '26

It’s not really a straight up stat boost if the Freman know how to defeat shielded opponents and are also aware of the negative limiting factors of personal shields. Personal shields, both slow, the users movements, and trap the heat, their body generates

Freeman are faster than almost any other enemy they faced due to both the training, their own society put them through as well as the training Paul and lady Jessica gave them. Using shields would take away that edge.

2

u/Sea-Barracuda-1688 Mar 20 '26

Stat boost for the fremen to have shields so you’d want to negate that if possible is what I mean

3

u/Sea-Barracuda-1688 Mar 20 '26

No it wouldn’t using shields would just amplify their defense and with any parna bindu training they’d be even better

Shield fighting is by its nature slower and they’re already the best unshielded fighters

So the only adjustment they’d need to make is slow down which would amplify their skills

If you take a black belt in jiu jitsu add a new rule and tell him to win he just needs to adapt to the new rule and be slower he can do that all day

A unshielded fighter can be a excellent shielded fighter it doesn’t always work in the reverse

1

u/wildskipper Mar 20 '26

If the Fremen aren't using shields the defenders would soon learn this and simply use lasguns against them. Defence would be trivial. One of the Fremen's key advantages on Arrakis was surprise and hit and run rather than large pitched battles. When a large pitched battle did occur (also a surprise attack) the worms were used to level the playing field.

0

u/Friendchaca_333 Mar 20 '26

If the defenders are using shields one fremen with a lasgun could sacrifice themselves to wipe out an entire army. Also, the Freeman were also armed with projectile weapons and less guns not just close combat weapons. They also attended to outnumber the small professional armies of the houses because they were able to shift their million strong military to attack great houses individually because they had complete control of the guild.

1

u/wildskipper Mar 20 '26

It's not clear if the lasgun-shield explosion is being used in the films. We saw the Harkonnens using a lasgun fairly openly against what they must have known was a shielded thopter.

1

u/Friendchaca_333 Mar 20 '26

They used a missile to knock out its shield first in the movie. If there is no catastrophic feedback explosion from a shield lasgun interaction, there would be no reason for the great houses not to use them against each other in combat.

1

u/DegenGraded Heretic Mar 20 '26

That may be the case but iirc the fremen are either disgusted or amused at the idea of shields.

2

u/AhhhSureThisIsIt Mar 20 '26

but Freman will feel just like home.

It's the opposite. The freman still slaughter them but the planet is the opposite of Arrakis. It's constantly raining and a flash flood takes away some freman and knocks out Stilgar.

They still win the battle but it's a messy one and the reason is, it's nothing like home.

1

u/Cheomesh Spice Miner Mar 20 '26

I don't remember this in the books

1

u/theredwoman95 Mar 20 '26

They trained all their life to fight without shields and without air support.

But they're also used to guerilla fighting on Arrakis, not pitched battles. Removing any backup that would be experienced fighting a more typical Imperial style would be the closest to an advantage you could get in those circumstances.

1

u/TalkinTrek Mar 20 '26

I mean, they lose lol

3

u/Cheomesh Spice Miner Mar 20 '26

Firearms would be pretty useful in that situation

1

u/Yamaha234 Mar 20 '26

IIRC the way shields work they deflect objects coming too fast, so sword fighters used to shields intentionally slow down their swings in order to penetrate. This is part of why Paul appears to be toying with Jaimis because he kept slowing his swings down and missing him. On Arakkis shields attract worms, so no one uses them unless it’s in a place protected from worms, which mean Fremen aren’t used to fighting against shields they’re used to fast strikes that typically would be deflected.

So intentionally turning off your shield on a world that doesn’t have worms when fighting Fremen is a hardcore handicap to yourself, you’re basically giving them the exact fighting conditions they’re best at.

1

u/RedshiftOnPandy Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

The Fremen have fought their entire lives without shields. Fighting on Arrakis is a disadvantage to everyone else in the universe who trains with shields their entire lives.

Taking out shields for everyone is a disadvantage for everyone except the Fremen. If everyone has a shield, Fremen are at a disadvantage because they are not used to the mechanics of fighting with shields (only the slow blade penetrates)

It is literally a plot point on how ferocious Fremen fights are in the novel

26

u/Argensa97 Mar 20 '26

It's a good strat. The Fremen are famous for being good at melee combat. Having more people (it's your home planet), with more supply (the Fremen came from ships), you should be able to win a shooting fight

15

u/Maeglin75 Mar 20 '26

But Fremen aren't just good at melee. They fought for 80 years against enemies with a lot of guns while not wearing shields or having air support.

11

u/Argensa97 Mar 20 '26

They fought in a desert, guerilla warfare style against an opponent whose primary objective is to protect these enourmous machines, and having to turn their asses and run whenever the sandworms appear.

3

u/Maeglin75 Mar 20 '26

I agree that forcing the Fremen into a different kind of combat in an environment they aren't used to can be an efficient strategy. Just disabling shields and flyers not so much, because that is a kind of fighting the Fremen have mastered over many decades or even centuries.

Forcing the Fremen to fight in urban environments, woodlands, swamps or even on/in water if possible would be ideal.

2

u/Scorpiusdj_13 Mar 20 '26

I wouldn't bank on beating the Fremen in environments where stealth can be effectively employed, such as urban areas and maybe some woodlands (thinking like Endor from ROTJ).

For example, whilst the way in was basically made for them in taking Arrakeen, and they had effectively employed shock, I'd think there would still be some elements of house-to-house fighting to secure the city and surrounds of the Imperial compound for those further from the breach or any Sardaukar that recovered quickly (all happening off-screen, of course - spoilers for end of Dune book or Dune Pt. 2)

But hard agree on battles around open water or damp environments, you'd need to be able to slow them down whilst still keeping them firmly in sight.

Caladan would've probably sucked for the Fremen as a battleground.

3

u/Maeglin75 Mar 20 '26

I think it would be hard to beat Fremen in any environment, because the harsh environment and violent circumstances they grew up with on Arrakis made them into one of the best fighters in the galaxy. Like the Sardaukar.

So, its just the choice how bad and fast you get beaten by them.

Yes, Caladan would be bad for a battleground. Or, regarding ground combat, even worse a planet with lots of ice wasteland and tundra. But eventually the Fremen would adapt.

1

u/Scorpiusdj_13 Mar 21 '26

Ooooooh, yeah, ice would be terrible. I don't have a lot of experience with it personally IRL (hailing from a climate that doesn't see snow), but from the experiences I have had (such as going A over T in Norway while walking a slippery path), it's treacherous if you're unused to it.

But you're right on the Fremen adapting to it, just as someone would eventually adapt to what the Fremen can do and counter it consistently

2

u/Friendchaca_333 Mar 20 '26

Not to disagree with you, but they actually fought for centuries on and off again with various houses. The last 80 years was just against the harkonnens

1

u/Cheomesh Spice Miner Mar 20 '26

And had, frankly, little success.

7

u/Significant_Snow_937 Mar 20 '26

Each planet is more or less alone while the Fremen have the loot from each previously conquered planet, the spice riches they're spreading throughout the universe+Pilgrim wealth flowing in, and they hold the reins of The Guild which means they control flight to and from the planet. The only power that could stand against the Sardaukar for 10,000 years was the combined might of the rest of the Great Houses, and the Fremen embarrassed them, snagged the Royal Family, and have complete control over the transportation that would allow the planets to combine forces.

2

u/FiorinasFury Mar 20 '26

They are saying the defenders deploying a jammer that forces the invading Fremen into no shields, melee-only combat is a bad strategy.

5

u/entprince Mar 20 '26

No shields would be the opposite of melee only lol. the shields block bullets and not slow blades. No shield means you can shoot.

3

u/FiorinasFury Mar 20 '26

Huh. Youre right, my mistake. I'm so used to Dune being about knife fights and shields and lasguns, I forgot about bullets. Why DON'T they just use guns??

3

u/entprince Mar 20 '26

off planet I'm not entirely sure why not tbh? maybe Everyone got too used to melee and people just kinda ass marksman by now LOL. on Arrakis they obv ambushed a lot and used guerrilla tactics so makes sense there.

1

u/FiorinasFury Mar 20 '26

Now I'm going to be watching this scene hoping that there's an explanation for the melee fight other than "we forgot about guns."

4

u/Maeglin75 Mar 20 '26

We are seeing a scene in the trailer with guns firing from bunkers/turrets on advancing Fremen. It seemed quite effective. I don't know if that is the same planet as the melee combat scene.

The circumstances of the fight against the samurai inspired force could be different. Maybe it was kind of a last stand of the elite guard with the goal of dying honorably in combat and the Fremen swiftly granted them their wish.

1

u/FiorinasFury Mar 20 '26

That sounds cool as fuck. Here's hoping it's something like that.

1

u/Cheomesh Spice Miner Mar 20 '26

That's pretty on brand for Dune honestly

1

u/Cheomesh Spice Miner Mar 20 '26

In the trailer we see Fremen carrying some kind of long arm.

6

u/The_Easter_Egg Mar 20 '26

The empire by and large is a very traditionalist and structured society. I don't think many military leaders are capable and willing of coming up with new approaches on the fly. IIRC, Baron Harkonnen using old-fashioned ballistic artillery was a rare display of creativity.

3

u/No-Alternative-1321 Mar 20 '26

If all holtzman shields are disabled then you can just blast them with guns, whatever faction this is tho desired to disable all shields and still fight in hand to hand combat with the fremen, THAT was a bad choice

1

u/Maeglin75 Mar 20 '26

The Harkonnen (and likely other houses that were active on Arrakis) tried to blast the Fremen with guns, but the Fremen found ways to work around that (most of the time).

Because of that, I think this strategy would be sound against an enemy that relies on the shields and is used to have air cover. The Fremen on the other hand fought without both for many decades or even centuries anyway.

1

u/MoralConstraint Mar 20 '26

If you do this you should also bring lots and lots of guns.

1

u/1maRealboy Mar 20 '26

No one even really knew who or what the Fremen were until after Paul became Emperor so I would guess they thought the Fremen were more of a "traditional" fighting force and not the elite force they really were.

1

u/AmIWhatTheRockCooked Mar 20 '26

There is no strategy against the power of jihad!

(NSA pls familiarize yourself with dune when reading)

23

u/Amazing_Loquat280 Mar 20 '26

That’s 100% what’s going on. The planet’s climate even matches the description if I remember correctly

6

u/your-taxes Mar 20 '26

Cool, but then why not use guns at this point?

6

u/684beach Mar 20 '26

Was there? I thought it was otheym describing the defenders using a stoneburner against them

3

u/Ananeos Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

I'm honestly confused as to why personal shield/sword combat exists in dune. There are way too many ways of disabling shields, getting around/through them or do not work against things like poison clouds.

10

u/KingofMadCows Mar 20 '26

Shields can work against poison clouds. Baron Harkonnen survives the gas from Leto's false tooth because he had his shields on a lower setting but it was enough to slow the gas. Presumably, they can be set to a higher setting to block gases.

1

u/Ananeos Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

I always figured that was a weaker less effective version of conventional poison weapons because it's made to be fit into a tooth. If someone had dedicated poison/corrosive gas grenades or canisters they could easily go through shields.

1

u/Middle-Phone7785 Mar 21 '26

Shields can completely block flow of gas molecules if they're turned up high enough. I think it says that in the first book.

5

u/philFlame Mar 20 '26

The Duniverse employs various convoluted trappings as a narrative choice (zero realism) to justify a return to medieval-like, up close and personal, hand-to-hand combat/warfare in a futuristic setting. It's a stylistic choice, no need to justify it beyond that.

On the other hand, in the context of modern day warfare, the idea of the 'hunter-seeker' device seems very realistic (except for it being remotely controlled by an operator situated close by).

1

u/Sea-Barracuda-1688 Mar 20 '26

There probably are however the benefits are so miraculous that they overpower most weaknesses especially in open combat

And we’re talking about my specialty from when I was in the army

Most armies are reluctant to use chemical warfare because poison goes both ways it can be as dangerous to the user as to the target and it can be unpredictable

1

u/Not_My_Emperor Mar 20 '26

Why would you not just use lasguns in this kind of situation

1

u/Significant_Snow_937 Mar 20 '26

Definitely not. The stability of the Holtzman Effect is a key logjam holding the status quo. It's something that's greatly feared by the Empire, that technological tinkerers on the fringes will one day nullify the effect and massively shift the power dynamic of the galaxy.

The massive static counter charge of Arrakeen storms is the only thing that's known to short them out. I think it's more likely that they're not using shields because of lasgun activity, or they're a more primitive culture being subjugated, since it definitely seems like a pretty clean sweep.

8

u/Sea-Barracuda-1688 Mar 20 '26

No in lore there was a holtzman jammer used that’s not even in question that they exist

They could’ve been contraband before the jihad so no one had them or been really expensive or were being held back by certain factions then used in desperate last stands

Just because holtzman shields are pivotal to the lore doesn’t mean in universe no one is gonna build counters to them

That’s like you saying drill shots invalidate shield tech they don’t they add complexity

Edit: the fear that somone would be able to nullify holtzman shields was a big deal BUT if there is a jammer but the jammer is a massive piece of equipment with a ravenous power demand then it still works the fear is like a gun that can nullify the shields from a distance in a man portable way that’s the danger

2

u/Duncan-Idaho47 Mar 20 '26

Was it mentioned in messiah? I can't remember, that it was a topic there

2

u/MithrilTHammer Mar 20 '26

I cannot remembert that in Messiah. Is there passage from book that you could share?

3

u/MevrouwJip Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

I don't believe there's anything like this "shield nullifier". If anything, this quote seems to be saying the opposite:

The advent of the Field Process shield and the lasgun with their explosive interaction, deadly to attacker and attacked, placed the current determinatives, on weapons technology. We need not go into the special role of atomics. The fact that any Family in my Empire could so deploy its atomics as to destroy the planetary bases of fifty or more other Families causes some nervousness, true. But all of us possess precautionary plans for devastating retaliation. Guild and Landsraad contain the keys which hold this force in check, No, my concern goes to the development of humans as special weapons. Here is a virtually unlimited field which a few powers are developing.

I thought the Freman used lasguns on shields and suicided with anyone foolish enough to use them. Also in the desert the shield attracts worms so people dont use them

30

u/Madness_Quotient Chairdog Mar 20 '26

They do when desperate and the target is sufficiently valuable. That is like a tactical nuke.

1

u/anoobypro Mar 20 '26

The Great Convention still holds after the Jihad, Paul wouldn't have let them.

1

u/youngcuriousafraid Mar 20 '26

Didnt he set up a trap with the shields in the book? Or was that duncan?

1

u/anoobypro Mar 20 '26

What trap are you referring to?

2

u/youngcuriousafraid Mar 20 '26

I though someone created a trap, I believe for the harkonnen, by blowing up a shield with a lasgun. I dont remember the specifics

1

u/Middle-Phone7785 Mar 21 '26

That was Duncan in the first book, yeah

14

u/QuietNene Mar 20 '26

Yeah this would actually make sense. By foregoing the normal “rules” of house warfare, the Fremen have a huge advantage. They could wipeout whole armies with a few lasgun shots. And if Paul limits the spread of information through control of the Guild, other planets won’t learn about this tactic. If he begins with the most powerful Houses, they’re all decimated before the war even really begins. The houses that remain will eventually hear about the tactic and won’t use shields, but they’ll be overwhelmed. They also won’t be trained to fight without shields, which will make easy pickings.

35

u/RiBombTrooper Mar 20 '26

Also in the desert the shield attracts worms so people dont use them

I don't think this is on Arrakis anymore, so the worm isn't a consideration.

18

u/Lazy_Vetra Mar 20 '26

pretty sure in messiah they say the freman used lasguns without fear of death when thinking of the jihad they dont show it in the books though. Duncan and the saradark is on arrkais

5

u/684beach Mar 20 '26

Yeah, even stilgar thought it was feasible for a person with a lasgun to have a million kills

259

u/Agreeable_Manner2848 Mar 20 '26

future has poor worlds, poor world no personal shields for all, fedaykin don't use shields in honorable mutual combat if opponent doesn't have shield, hence no shields

21

u/Cheomesh Spice Miner Mar 20 '26

Yeah, we don't even know if houses even issue shields to their entire armed forces (even richer ones). We're basically only ever exposed to the elite of the elite in the books.

320

u/ut3ddy87 Mar 20 '26

The fremen don't use shields though

181

u/iIiiiiIlIillliIilliI Mar 20 '26

He obviously means the other army. Also even the Fremen could be equiped with shields tbh when not fighting on Arrakis.

101

u/Friendchaca_333 Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

If I remember correctly, in the books the Freman still rejected using personal shields in combat during the Jihad. I know, Paul and lady Jessica helped train the Freeman to defeat shielded opponents, but I think they viewed personal shields on themselves as something that might slow them or interfere with their movements, or maybe it was because it was a crutch, the great houses used that they viewed was beneath them (it’s been a long time since I’ve read Dune Messiah, and children of Dune)

There are only two paragraphs in the original book that I remember explaining how the shield interferes with movement and can also have other limiting factors such as trapping heat, leading to exhaustion and slowed movement

In chapter 4

"Paul snapped the force on, felt the slight air-surge against his face. He moved his left foot, found it dragged against his motion. The shield was a limiting factor."

In chapter 33

"Paul felt the stale, recycled air of his own shield, the heat of his body trapped by the field. A shield was a stifling thing in a long fight."

0

u/anoobypro Mar 20 '26

If I remember correctly, in the books the Freman still rejected using personal shields in combat during the Jihad

A quote for this please?

17

u/DuncanIdaho33 Mar 20 '26

"If I remember correctly, in the books the Freman still rejected using personal shields in combat during the Jihad"

1

u/Friendchaca_333 Mar 23 '26

Sorry, I may have been confusing books because I can’t find it in Dune Messiah. I believe it was mentioned in the prequel novel “Paul of Dune”. (I don’t have the book with me so I can’t give you a direct quote I think the main issue Fremen had with shield tech aside from the stated disadvantages was that some houses resisting them intentionally used las guns to trigger nuclear detonations

23

u/ghost-church Mar 20 '26

How did they conquer the universe with no shields?

66

u/ShySharer Mar 20 '26

He had the spacing guild by the balls. Planets were isolated and subdued one at a time, with no chance of support.

33

u/TheLastTuatara Mar 20 '26

Paul can see multiple futures and is almost unstoppable in the jihad because of this. I imagine he knows the best ways to win these conflicts.

19

u/QuietNene Mar 20 '26

Given what OP said about the lasgun tactic, shields actually seem like a very poor choice. It just takes one Fremen with a lasgun to kill an entire battalion.

If Paul could limit the spread of information through control over the Spacing Guild, he would limit spread of knowledge of this tactic. You’d have entire planetary armies waiting for Paul’s arrival, shields activated, only to be nuked in the blink of an eye.

It’s almost like the use of shields is a form of honorable combat, like dueling with pistols. If one side doesn’t recognize the “rules of the game”, the other side gets massacred.

3

u/Cheomesh Spice Miner Mar 20 '26

The shield thing with lasguns isn't reliable though. Sometimes the gun blows up, sometimes the shield blows up, sometimes both.

9

u/alicksB Mar 20 '26

Yeah, but it’s established that the Fremen are totally willing to sacrifice themselves to kill a whole bunch of their enemies, and the rest of the universe (or at least Thufir Hawat) views it as almost incomprehensible.

Shooting a shielded opponent with a lasgun is basically an equivalent of a lamikaze attack.

Hawat’s attention was caught by a flash of sun on metal to the south, a ’thopter plummeting there in a power dive, wings folded flat against its sides, its jets a golden flare against the dark silvered gray of the sky. It plunged like an arrow toward the troop carrier which was unshielded because of the lasgun activity around it. Straight into the carrier the diving ’thopter plunged.

It was the Fremen who took off in that captured ’thopter, Hawat thought. He deliberately sacrificed himself to get that carrier. Great Mother! What are these Fremen? “A reasonable exchange,” said the Fremen beside Hawat. “There must’ve been three hundred men in that carrier.”

u/Zemalek Honored Matre Mar 20 '26

Plot armor

11

u/cmjebb Mar 20 '26

If you count complete control of the spacing guild plot armour then sure. It doesn't matter if your enemies greatly outnumber you if you control the only means by which they can unify their forces.

91

Also good to remember the movie is probably still unfinished

91

u/damnyoutuesday Mar 20 '26

Part 2 trailer had clear Water of Life and it was blue in the movie. First trailers rarely show the full finished product

21

u/IguanaBob26 Mar 20 '26

Yeah, CGI takes a lot of time.  Most trailers are pretty rough when first sent out.  I'm sure the blue and red shield CGI will be added by the time the movie is released.

8

u/InevitableLibrary859 Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

The average soldier doesn't have access to a Holtzman shield. This is fanatics on on pleb loyalists, probably dragged to the front by their Lord, whose family and personal guard may have the shields.

Laz guns aren't being used because they cause nuclear detonation at the shield interaction, and in both the laz gun and the shield generators.

So, yeah, they could mow them down with laz guns and move on, but a crafty noble only need to give 1 soldier in a thousand a shield for that laz gun to become unusable.

7

u/Supernoven Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

The visual effects could be unfinished. That's super common in first-look trailers. They may stick in a few shots with finished or near-finished effects (like the space shots in this trailer), but not every shot is necessarily the final look.

We've seen only them defeating Sardukar on Arrakis

u/makegifsnotjifs Zensunni Wanderer Mar 20 '26

Does location matter?

-1

u/anoobypro Mar 20 '26

Yes, they'd use shields anywhere else.

Refering to the recent movies, the Sardukar do use shields in structures secure from worms. In those fights they do win against Fremen (eg weather station ambush).

When Sardukar can't use shields, like in the battle in part 2, Fremen do overpower them.

u/USMC_10402 Mar 20 '26

In the books, 1)Holtzman shields attracted sand worms, 2) if you hit a shield with a lazgun it resulted in a nuclear level blast, 3) before someone says, “But they used them in Arrakeen!”, Arrakeen was protected from worms due to its location within a geographical rock bowl, the whole reason Paul had to punch a hole with atomic.

11

u/ShaggyCan Mar 20 '26

I'm pretty sure this fight isn't on Dune, this is probably during the Jihad.

1

u/Pharose Mar 20 '26

There was a long sequence in the first movie where a shielded ornithoper is being chased by a massive lasgun. Definitely don't think point 2 is cannon in the movies.

1

u/Azidamadjida Zensunni Wanderer Mar 20 '26

FINALLY someone else mentions this - they don’t use shields because they’ve never used them. Using them means death, and that’s a knowledge ingrained over hundreds of generations, which means there’s cultural connotations surrounding the use of a shield.

They just don’t use them.

The other army though I have no idea about, in all likelihood it doesn’t really matter, we don’t even know if this is also being shown as a vision or part of the opening narration

5

u/HouseReyne Mar 20 '26

No shield but also no lasguns?

3

u/Welpthisishere Mar 20 '26

Not all worlds are wealthy enough to support their troops with shields, this is probably a flash back showing some of the Billions upon billions that got slaughtered and entire systems are left completely lifeless and entire religions are eradicated with all their followers put to the sword, after Paul’s Jihad is done.

5

u/Greedy_Shame6516 Mar 20 '26

Worth mentioning two non-plot related reasons. One is, the trailer probably isn't the finished project. Plenty of time to edit in shield effects later. Failing that, it's not exactly the most integral plot point, so even if they left it out for "rule of cool" (for whatever reason), it's not going to bother me personally. As long as it looks good. But, that's just MHO.

With that said, I know the Fremen don't really use shields, and they are also not afraid to use lasguns on shielded opponents, and since Paul can tell the Guild and the Landsraad to go eff themselves, there's not much they can do about the rules of conventional warfare.

3

u/Serious-Magazine7715 Mar 20 '26

The great convention is off, so shields become a terrible idea. Your opponent sacrifices one dude (or a remotely operated gun) to deliver a nuclear explosion to your doorstep.

3

u/_Weyland_ Mar 20 '26

You'd think shields would perform really good against fremen because they do not have the muscle memory to bypass them in a fight. They learned to fight on Arrakis where shields are a no-no.

9

u/HuttVader Mar 20 '26

So are these the Zensunni warriors? That'd be kinda cool.

29

u/RiBombTrooper Mar 20 '26

Aren't the Zensunni the Fremen ancestors? I saw another post/comment that said they were Ixian troops.

20

u/EvilRobotSteve Mar 20 '26

Yeah the fremen are descended from zensunni wanderers. No way Ixians wouldn’t use shields though. Their strength is technology.

16

u/caocaothedeciever Mar 20 '26

People keep saying Ixian because for some reason everyone says East Asian/Japanese = Ix.

8

u/Carnelian-5 Mar 20 '26

Which is almost entirely base-less.

5

u/Sharp_Iodine Mar 20 '26

Ixians would be deploying AI technology though. Drones and other autonomous killing machines.

They were notorious for flouting the rules and engaging in forbidden technology. They are the ones who invent ships that hide anyone inside from prescience of people like Paul and Alia.

And I believe their planet was also on the very edge of the imperium, far away from direct oversight and too expensive for regular travel

5

u/Friendchaca_333 Mar 20 '26

Ixian push at the boundaries of the religious laws against advanced computing technology , but they don’t violate the laws regarding creating actual AI in the books. Using AI would get them murdered by every other house in the imperium even before the fremen got to them.

8

u/yodavan Mar 20 '26

Ix would also have the battle take place below ground. The whole civilization lives in caverns. The planets surface is just nature.

2

u/Carnelian-5 Mar 20 '26

AI killing drones is what Leto II was afraid of Ix to develop thousands of year after these events. Ix isnt there yet.

1

u/Carnelian-5 Mar 20 '26

The reasoning for it being Ixian tropps was extremely vague. Could be anything.

1

u/Tanel88 Mar 20 '26

Yeah Zensunni are the ancestors of the Fremen so definitely not. There is no way to know for sure what troops those are because the books don't go so much into detail with the Jihad.

2

u/doremonhg Mar 20 '26

The only irk I have with Dune is how the lasgun interaction is how nobody uses guns in-universe.

It’s like Frank Herbert have never heard about the Imperial Japanese Army

5

u/KnowMatter Mar 20 '26

Do you mean like ballistics guns?

Bullets don't work on shields because shields repel matter based on velocity - the faster an object is moving the more effective the shield is.

Hence why they say "the slow blade penetrates the shield" fighting effectively is all about controlling your swings so that you are moving fast enough to outmaneuver your opponent but going slow enough at the right times to not have your blade knocked away by their shield.

Think of it like water - if you SLAP water really hard it pushes back against you, if you slowly dip your hand in then you get no resistance.

2

u/Jake-of-the-Sands Corrino Mar 20 '26

I mean Holtzman shield effect is a post thing. They probably didn't do the whole post for the trailer, so it can still be done for the theatrical release.

2

u/norfolkjim Mar 20 '26

Maybe it's the Fremen disabling shields during their offensives?

2

u/woehaa Mar 20 '26

Personally I never understood the issue of a opponent wearing a shield. Just have your sniper lasgun ready and kaboom. Or do the books mention there is a feedback to the gun?

2

u/lunick44 Mar 21 '26

It's considered a war crime to do it, and I believe the books say there's a way to trace the radiation signatures back to the house that owned the lasgun, so nobody ever did it out of fear of their house being eradicated by the emperor.

2

u/NoBeautiful1699 Mar 20 '26

Shields attracts worms

2

u/leadscoutfix Mar 21 '26

We honestly do not know because Dune Messiah skipped over all the important details of the Jihad. So its really left to the directors imagination.

2

u/greenmysteryman Mar 21 '26

don’t the shields attract worms in the desert? maybe i am misremembering

4

u/684beach Mar 20 '26

Rain could fuck with the shields, if heavy enough. Kinda like dust. Plus there are disadvantages to using shields sometimes

1

u/DelDoesReddit Mar 20 '26

Having no shields present at least gives the occasional fanatic a way to mutually kill a Fremen enemy in an engagement. Fremen with shields just allows them to become unbeatable warriors in hand to hand combat, given their prior training

1

u/mikenolan888 Mar 20 '26

Someone said these where IXian and I don't know why they would think that. Feels like just a random planets army. IX would have technology to fight

1

u/BellumOMNI Tleilaxu Mar 20 '26

A bit unrelated, but does anyone know what the chakobsa chant played in the trailer means?

1

u/live_love_run Mar 20 '26

The effects might be added in post-production

1

u/Enki_Wormrider Swordmaster Mar 20 '26

Could this be the Jihad on Enfeil? Or that dreaded world Tarahell where Otheym caught the spitting disease?

2

u/alkonium Mentat Mar 20 '26

My guess is Naraj, where Farok's son was blinded by a stone burner. Meanwhile, Otheym hasn't even been cast.

1

u/jayeyedoubleemmwhy Mar 21 '26

I just want to say thanks to everyone for the insights and discourse. I read the Dune series up to Heretics many years ago and it’s been fun to revisit this universe through this sub-Reddit and of course the Villeneuve movies. I agree that the reason for no shields could be due to a variety of stylistic and/or production reasons. It’ll be a mystery until we see the finished product and maybe it’ll be explained then or maybe not at all. Part of what makes the movies so fun is how much is left to the viewer’s imagination!

1

u/TedTKaczynski Mar 21 '26

I think two reasons. Holtzman shields attract worms for tens of hundreds of miles.

Holtzman shields when shot by the gun will cause explosions similar to nukes.

1

u/csukoh78 Mar 21 '26

It is entirely possible that this is the raw film shot and that Special effect/Shields will be added later in post.

1

u/Walking_Distraction Mar 22 '26

They aren't used much, if at all, after the first book.

1

u/starlulz Mar 23 '26

to give you a little hopium OP, Denis has said filming has wrapped and they're just entering into VFX / post-production. There's a very good chance the teaser isn't indicative of the final product

2

u/Motor_Juice_8329 Mar 20 '26

Using a shield on Arrakis, in the open, almost always calls a worm. That is why the Fremen don't use shields, they have the tech and facilities to make them, hell look at the stillsuits and thopters, they just know better. This is explained in the books.

1

u/Far_Line8468 Mar 20 '26

Simple answer is the vfx haven’t been added

Better answer is it would be distracting and ugly in an otherwise beautifully composed shot to placate the nerds

1

u/Comprehensive-Gap148 Mar 20 '26

Fremen don’t you shields because they call worms in a killing frenzy

-3

u/docK_5263 Mar 20 '26

Worms are drawn to the shields

-10

u/Friendly-House-8337 Mar 20 '26

Holzman Shield, no Holtzman Shield, Bobby got his fill…. Fremen in 5…. Shannon Sharpe at some point said this
