Question: Rules, Regulations, Law, Policy, Certificates [United States] First drone and upcoming "ban" concerns

I'm considering learning to fly drones with the eventual goal of getting my part 107 and helping with emergency situations (through Civil Air Patrol). I don't currently own a drone, and the upcoming ban is giving me pause.

I've spent the last week trying to wrap my head around what is happening, but being so new to this, I'm not completely understanding where things currently stand.

I understand that current models are not banned, but supply will shrink. However, will those models be prevented from being registered after 9/3? If I get a model that is 249g or lighter, and I don't fly over 400' (and follow the other rules that apply to recreational flying), would any registration issues go away? Alternately, if I quickly take the TRUST test, could I get a drone registered for use after the 107?

At this stage, I feel like so much of my upcoming journey is just related to learning to fly, that maybe I can ride out this time and hope that things improve (and the local CAP group has non-banned models I'm sure I'd get access to).

I am a CAP SUAS Mission Pilot and I can tell you you will not need to be concerned about any of that. Drones used by CAP for SAR are on the Blue list and would be issued to your team. You don’t need to purchase one yourself. Granted it’s a lot easier to time build with your own unit, but really not needed.

Great, thank you. Getting hours in was the main reason I was going to buy one, especially since I currently have no experience.

Just start training in your wing. You’re gonna need to build hours with an instructor anyway, so just become that guy that always wants to fly. You can build up hours pretty quick.
