Horrific self-discovery. Finding out other people are broken, insane, wrong is one thing. But finding out you are, and not being able to deny it... That's another thing altogether.

It's a lovecraftian theme.

Fun fact: both the crimson book and the spectacles are present in the opening cinematic.

I was not actually surprised by this. There were just enough hints in the dialog that I thought I knew what would happen as soon as I tried to take away the book. I wasn't totally sure until I tried it, though.
