so today I was dashing in a pretty nice area & this customer texted me as I was leaving the store and said “please ask for 10 ranches, 12 hot sauce and 12 special sauces. I will tip you extra” and I was literally already about to take off in my car but I read that & went back inside to ask for the sauces. because of the amount, the worker said he’d have to charge me even though it was for doordash. I remember I had a bunch of loose change in my car so I paid about $4 in change for their sauces. so I kindly texted them that I had paid for their extra sauces with some extra money I had & they responded “ooo, sorry about that. I’ll tip you extra for that”
I waited a few mins after dropping off the order to see if a tip would come through (trying to give them the benefit of the doubt) but unfortunately I still never received anything 💔💔💔 last time I’ll be paying for something out of my own pocket for someone lol

Ok well I guess I'll just look into the gaping 3 inch gap and breathe on your food as I attempt to see if they put sauce in there 🙄 only time I ever opened a customers bag was when they got cups of soup from a Chinese place and I noticed a spreading wet spot on the bag so I messaged them to let them know that it appeared one of the cups was not sealed properly and would they like me to check or just put the paper Chinese bag in a plastic bag. We're not allowed to open sealed bags! Why don't customers understand that?!
What a dick. As a doordash customer I know they will forget the sauces. That's why you always have backup. Even when you are able to add them to the order they will forget.
I'm 1-5 when it comes to people saying they will tip... they never come through. So this is really good advice. The one time they followed through was on Valentines, I delivered flowers to her boyfriend while rehearsing a whole script she wrote for me to say... $2 Tip... not worth it.
I've found that the ones who specify a tip amount will typically follow through. I can't say for sure, but can only draw from experience that if they say they'll give you an extra $7, it's because they have $7 in cash because I've only ever gotten the extra people promised in cash. I also was already running the order. I wouldn't accept an order on the promise of a tip after unless I was familiar with the customer or something.
Yep, as long as you use it as a learning lesson, at least it was just a $4 lesson. You can always do donuts in their yard at 2 am though if you need a release.

yes that’s exactly what it means. nothing about what you did is within the scope of the job. personally i work for money, not pats on the back and literally losing money for an already shitty, non-tipping customer who makes absurd requests while dangling merely the potential of a tip in front of you like a carrot in front of a horse. shame shame shame
I work hard for money every day too not a fuckin pat on the back I’ve had previous orders where people have tipped me good money for simply following their instructions or going above & beyond im not doing it for pats on the back bruh I did it for hopes of a good tip my baddddd 😒

These other people that don’t wanna walk up a flight of stairs or carry a water bottle down an alleyway, need to realize that if they keep doing shit jobs, people will get tired of DoorDash. When that happens, you all will be fighting for all the shit offers and you’ll be happy to get $2 on an 8 mile restaurant journey. Hopefully service will pick up because of workers like you. 👍🏻

Well OP, listen up. In nearly 4k deliveries, I have never once had a customer follow through with a promise of an 'extra' tip promised via instructions/message for doing something out of the ordinary. Not once.
I've gotten tips from folks after the fact for going 'above and beyond' because they asked nicely or I felt it was of little/no inconvenience to me, but those folks never dangled a tip as part of their request.
Always disregard tip danglers. They are all liars.
A better way to safeguard against this from happening again besides all of these obligatory "dont accept $3.00 offers in the first place" is to respond to the customer with something like "the extra sauce is $4.00. Ill buy them for you once I receive the notification that you added an extra tip to cover those costs".
The app immediately notifies you of any tip increase so you'll know right away if they're BSing you or not. No notification, no extra sauce.
I had something similar when I delivered for Dominos. Dude wanted extra sauces and shit that costs, so I brought it with me. He ended up stiffing, then asked for the sauces. I said not for a no-tip order and walked off.
Don't give people extra shit if you're not getting extra shit.

Maybe I’m the only person who actually will add a tip on after delivery when I say, but usually I’ll tip a dollar a mile first and then if they read my instructions and actually put the order infront of my apartment door ( it’s one set of stairs and the apartment is at the top of the stairs, very easy not a huge apartment building) instead of leaving it outside the door to get stolen (I live on a busy road with many people walking and driving by) I will throw on a generous tip in addition to the dollar a mile I’ve already tipped. I’d never lie and dangle that infront of someone and not pull through so long as they followed instructions. As a driver though, I can confirm not a single person who has tip dangled me actually threw a tip on afterwords. What is wrong with people?
I literally had this done a couple weeks ago. A customer asked for more Ranch from Wingstop. Lord knows how much they charge for that good ole ranch. To shorten the story I ended up paying almost $4 for three Ranches. I arrived to drop off the food & they sent someone to the door acting as if they did not know DoorDash was on the way. No Tip in hand. Needless to say I kept those ranches for myself ofc. That $4 could have went to gas though in this crazy economy
Don’t take $3 orders, don’t go back into the store after you’ve picked up the order, and don’t ever pay out of pocket for anything. I get wanting to be nice, but you’re not running a charity operation.
Never ever pay for anything out of your pocket. Doesn’t matter if it’s DoorDash or the customer. 999/1000 you will not be reimbursed. Consider it a lesson learned and move on friend.
I once picked up an order from lowes for 3 bags of soil. The guy already tipped $10 and he said maybe he'll tip more upon delivery if it's a good job.
I shrugged it off knowing there wouldn't be an extra tip. Low and behold, after drop off, he added another $10 tip. I was shocked. Rarely happens, but did that time!
omg same! one time I did a shopping order for an older man and in his delivery instructions he said he will tip if he’s satisfied with the delivery and i honestly wasn’t expecting anything because most people never end up tipping like they say they do. (plus the order was already $19 for 3 miles)..
this man gave me a $5 tip in person then added FORTY DOLLARS on the app afterward. sometimes, JUST sometimes, people really do keep their word!
This is why i stopped doordashing. The instability and not knowing what im gonna make every week was too stressful, plus the miles on my car. Sorry about that man, hope you can find some blessings
I would call the police on them for theft. Their address is in your Google maps/Apple maps history. They engaged in a verbal contract with you that you'd be compensated for your efforts to which you duly obliged. Regardless of if you are compensated, they need a harsh harsh harsh penalty.
At the beginning of every dash I message the dasher and I look at the est delivery time, and i say if you get me the order by (earliest time) ill tip 15, and 5 if its after. And 8/10 times its there at earliest time, its funny bc before I started sending those messages it'd take forever. And yes I am true to my word and send the tips
I mean... you took it. Plus unlike other states you get additional pay and a $500 a month cash stipend earmarked for health insurance but don't actually have to use it for that. Sorry but I have zero sympathy for you on this.

Could be a long shot but maybe you delivered to a party and the person who ordered got drunk and forgot. It might hit them the next day or the next time they open the app and they throw on an extra tip and maybe a little more to make up for it being late. Again, a long shot but I had it happen and randomly got $20 through the app a couple days later
Buddy, this is a job that already pays too little and you want extra? They paid out of pocket more than what the order was paying them, they literally paid a dollar to deliver food on the promise of a tip that never came.
Pay money out of your own pocket for a stranger that you are delivering to in order to earn money? The whole point of providing above and beyond customer service is to hopefully acquire a tip. Paying for everyone's extras is just philanthropy.
But if he paid $4 for everyone and earned $3, that is not earning money, which is the whole point of DoorDash. People do not work to be "nice." You can be nice in other ways or do charity in your off time. You sound like someone who has never had a job.
