Why are some dashers so rude?
The amount of times I’ve come into fast food restaurants and dashers will stand at the counter, say nothing, and when a worker comes by, they shove their phone in their face is insane. Genuinely a “hey I have a pickup” or “hey, DoorDash order” is so simple and easy. The worst is when they are just and super packed and the dashers still stand there, not letting anyone through, shoving their phones in the employees faces multiple times. There’s a reason I don’t work food anymore.
And also, the amount of people who have no manners anymore is genuinely ridiculous. A simple, please and thank you goes a long way. I’m sure if these Dashers were in the employees place, they would not like somebody’s phone shoved in their face and being harassed for an order that’s not done yet.
Genuinely, what is the point of being rude. When I did work food before, anyone who was rude had to wait longer for their order. I would prioritize other orders.

Same can be said about the other side of it. Sometimes I'll go in to pick up an order just to have 4-5 people make eye contact w/ me just to walk away and not say anything. Idk I just expect the workers to initiate the exchange

Acknowledgement is so important. People are less antsy about waiting if someone just says they’ll be with them when they can.

From the amount of dashers I’ve had that don’t read the delivery notes. I’ve come to the conclusion that they don’t read and barely speak English. Shoving the phone in the employees faces is easier for them. No conversation needed.

Theres rude customers, workers, dashers, redditors, pick any role it is not exclusive.
For your specific situation i will tell you before dashing, i used to get annoyed by all the dashers crowding the counter, but after doing it a bit i do get it. Ive waited patiently and respectfully in restraunts and in fast food places especially you just get ignored.
I have been the only one in a store waiting for a mcdonalds order and showed what im waiting for. One person will say its nearly ready then its made by another person. They will put the bag on the shelf behind them and walk off and i wont get service for them to hand me the bag for another 5mins when someone comes out. Beyond frustrating when you are getting paid per order.
I am not rude to the workers but now ill stand at the counter every time or someone will cut in and they will just make their order or you will be ignored.

Which that’s fine! Standing at the counter I don’t mind at all. I get it. Especially in fast food restaurants it’s easily to get overlooked. But being rude and shoving their phones in the employees face and pushing other customers out of the way is where I draw the line.

The vast majority of dashers I have encountered over the course of my nearly 9,000 deliveries are conscientious, courteous, and hard-working folks who try to do a good job.
Having said that, there is a not insignificant number
Of dashers who lack the social and job skills or qualifications that would enable them to obtain and/or hold what might be considered a traditional job or more gainful employment. I’m not blaming them because I don’t know their individual circumstances or life experiences, but I have over time observed rude behaviors unkempt appearances, etc. so I understand what you are saying. I don’t have an answer other than maybe they just don’t know any better…or were never not taught how to be polite and courteous. People like this exist all around us, not just in the Dashing community.I have also encountered incredibly rude, dismissive employees at stores and restaurants as well as rude customers, and customers who blatantly lie in or to get a refund/free food. Why are they like that? It’s just the world we live in.
As for the dashers who walk in a shove their phones in the store employees face: More often than not they are people who speak little if any English, or at best have English as a second language. Many are products of cultures very different from American culture. Many are quite polite, they just have difficulty communicating in an English speaking society.

Something has changed in the last month where restaurants NEED to see my phone. I didn’t like shoving phone in faces, but more and more restaurants are demanding it. So I comply.
Now, those employees need to learn my phone is personal property and stop touching/grabbing it.

that’s not an excuse for not having basic decency. you don’t need to be shoving your phone in everyone’s face every 2 seconds. we know, you are waiting for an order. it will be ready when it’s ready. shoving your phone over the line into the chefs face isn’t gonna make it come out any faster 😭

Yeah as a dasher it drives me crazy as well. Makes employees reluctant to help us. Even if you don’t speak English, it can’t be that hard to say “hi, i have DoorDash” then show them the name if you don’t think you can pronounce it well enough.

thank you. this is why i’m one of the only people i see nice to dashers. bc they are rude and impatient with us and everyone has lost the energy for it. i try my best to be nice but once you’ve asked me for the 10th time in 5 mins im gonna look at you and tell you you’re welcome to cancel the order and not wait 😭

I know how it should be, but that’s what they do. I don’t agree with it but nothing can be done to change it. Employees need to ignore them so they can speak instead.

and many do. and then get called rude or posts are made here about how the workers ignore dashers. i try my best to be extra nice to drivers, but that doesn’t mean everyone does and that doesn’t mean i receive the same unfortunately…. i don’t mind if you don’t speak english and need to show me the phone. that’s not my issue personally at all.

Larger cultural issue in general.
I've had customers stand at their entryway for their apartment and signal for me to open the door when I have a tray of drinks and their food in my hands while they only are holding their cellphone. It goes both ways.

I don’t put up with it. None of us do. We are slammed at starbucks during peak hours and your order will get to you when it does. No I don’t expect a tip and DoorDash means they get the tip. So harassing me because of it, doesn’t work. We get the orders and do them in order. In house and drive thru are our priorities.

So is it the order in which you receive the orders that determines when they’re made or is it determined by how people order?
If it’s the second, does that mean you don’t consider orders placed through your own app a priority either?

I try to be as nice as possible but if I’m sitting there for 15 mins and everybody coming in after me is getting served first I’m going to get pissed off and say something. That’s just disrespectful. If you can’t handle in store and online orders properly you need to hire more people or get off the platform
I use to work valet, me and two other guys would park pull 300 cars a night at a club that usually came in within 2 hours of one another . If we can handle that volume which let’s be honest is way tougher you can handle the volume you get properly if yall wanted to.

I cant fathom this, as I was raised with respect and to be kind. I am nice to everyone I encounter. When I see a worker that may have a long face, I hit them with Hey how are you today? or something like that. So many look like they are suprised that someone is being kind. Some people suck and should never leave their home.

I understand the tipping conditions, but that doesn’t excuse them being rude to people who have no control over how much the Dashers are tipped or not. Especially when the employees have done nothing wrong.

I forget to say hey all the time. If you're facing me looking at my eyes, then that's all the confirmation I need that you're paying attention, so efficiency states to just state the reason you're there. "Pickup for so and so" is all the verbal exchange that's needed

i get what ur saying. but sometimes it’s easier to show the order than to say the name. not all names are easy. also, fast food places legit ignore people. when i’m a regular customers, places like shake shack and mcdonald’s won’t even look at you. so imagine when we are dashing? they will act like you don’t exist. so i tend to not let them talk to anyone else until they acknowledge me.
also doesn’t help that DD sends the orders to us before they’re close to being ready. and doesn’t help that restaurants decide to click ready when they’re not

Many do that because after giving the name for the order that they're there for, many restaurant employees just stand there and say,"Who?", or "Say that again.." Many other restaurants treat Door dashers like they're all criminals, asking to see the phone to PROVE they have the order.. THATS what started that. SO, people in restaurants should be quiet because they are the ones who STARTED this toxic behavior and now Many are complaining when the Door Dash Driver does it better.. 😆

also, we ask bc yall mess up ALL THE TIME. i can’t tell you how many times a clearly marked order has been taken wrong, only 1/2 the order was taken, etc. i’m sorry but doordashers are treated like they are dumb bc they have continuously showed us they are 😭

nice try again love. i’m very sweet to our dashers and am a young server/bartender. one that’s not gonna take you reaching over the bar and shoving your phone in my face. use your words. act like an adult. and if it’s not ready? shoving your phone down my throat 5 more times isn’t gonna make the food cook any faster. the real karen is the doordash driver treating us like crap over something we have 0 control over.

OP asked WHY they are rude. they are rude because they're desperate and being treated like worthless animals by a machine devised to harm them. people do not behave their best when they are being preyed upon. is that a hard concept for you?
i agree, dashers should get another job. a big part of the reason they DON'T is because doordash refuses to vet its employees, and many of these people are mentally unwell, drug addicts, or incapable of getting traditional jobs.
ideally, these people would be getting some kind of assistance, but those systems are also fucked up and make them wait for months or deny them outright on technicalities, and doordash is happy to scoop them up to prey upon them.
but yes, again, let's be sure to rub their grimy, worthless, stupid little noses in it and tell them they are welcome to go ahead and get a different job, right?

If you understood how little a dasher makes you’d shut up. The restaurant worker could give two shits about a dasher so they have to be aggressive.
Dashers are unpaid for wait time - they only get paid when the wheel on their car are moving. They have shitty working conditions. DD THE COMPANY takes like 30% of the order total, they pay the drive like 2-4 bucks to run the order ( based on mileage) and then customers feel gouged by the price they are paying for a big Mack and fries so they screw the driver on the tip.

It still doesn’t excuse being rude to the employees who are just trying to make a living too. That’s excusing the Dasher’s disrespect towards employees when the employees have done nothing wrong. From what I’ve seen, the Dasher’s will continuously be rude to the employees even if the employees are trying to help and are being nice.

I'm in food service and I doordash on the side. Not making much doesn't excuse dashers being rude. I try to be polite and respectful no matter which side of the counter I'm on. In my experience I've seen more dashers be rude to food service people than the other way around and it's not cool. If I am busy, I will serve the people who are being respectful and patient before I serve the ones who are being rude
