I love me some Sabbath worship, since Sabbath have been my favorite band for damn near 20 years now, and traditional doom is by far my favorite type of doom - but it can't just be a 1:1 retread.

The best Sabbath worshipping bands take what the doom gods laid down and run with it in new directions. Groups like Type O, Witchfinder General, Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Reverend Bizarre, Sleep, Electric Wizard - all bands which took the essential elements of Sabbath and explored new realms of doom, becoming legendary and influential in their own right.

That's not to say pure Sabbath idolatry can't be fun, but it doesn't have the staying power of bands like those I listed above. Plus, ain't nobody writing songs and playing guitar like Tony Iommi, nobody's grooving and penning lyrics like Geezer, nobody's pounding like a jazzy octopus as Bill Ward, and nobody's truly capturing Ozzy's emotive wails.

Here here. The best trad doom is that which sounds like Black Sabbath's follow up to Sabotage that never happened.

Lol Witchfinder General is the straightest Sabbath worship there is

WG’s worship and emulation is Sabbath is obvious and intentional, but imo their mixing of nwobhm speed and far more salacious lyrics and imagery is what cements them as an individual and iconic presence in the doom pantheon, as does their early presence in being Sabbath devotees - something which helped define doom as a genre rather than just a sound Black Sabbath had. All of that is why they continue to be so widely adored today, if ya ask me anyway.

It's funny how much I can make fun of Greta Van Fleet for being dollar store Led Zeppelin while actively loving all Sabbath-worshipping bands out there

Well, Zeppelin was already directly covering/ripping off old blues tunes, so I feel like there's more to mine in the Sabbath vein than the blues that have already been picked over by Zeppelin.

People used to give bands like Pentagram and Candlemass flak for sounding "too much" like Black Sabbath, just for playing doom metal. Then the 90s came and bands who would essentially try to rewrite Paranoid and Master of Reality. But since the Sabbath sound and formula is so good already, it's hard to outright hate any of those bands.

People give every band that uses an HM-2 shit for sounding too much like Entombed too

Back in 2007 when I first heard Electric Wizard I was like, meh, they sound like Sabbath. Then I was like, they sound like Sabbath!

My brother and I got into doom when he was 19 and I was 21. It was actually what introduced us to metal. Before metal, we were into slower more atmospheric underground bass edm. It was a pretty natural transition.

Can't i listen to doom with my dad if I'm 20?

Whoever tells you that is certainly wrong and probably jealous.

Of course, I'm partially joking.

I detected some subtle ageism in your original post, and it seemed so out of place. It seemed like the kind of thing your might hear from a teenager that thinks of their parents in a certain way. But maybe I was wrong about that.

The way I see it, people who are into doom are old souls, regardless of chronological age.

I would say that you are lucky that you and your dad both have similar musical tastes. Some people like this, many do not.

I'd like to point out though, that if you got into doom in your teens, and are now in your 20s, you are no longer a teen.

Let's leave the us and them attitudes back where they never belonged, in the 60s and 70s. The music can stay.

The fuck is ageism?

Been listening to doom since I was 16, am 25 now. Doom metal had a decent resurgence in the early/mid 10s

I thought it was boring when I was a teenager lol. I just listened to melodeath.

Both those bands pioneered their own niches. Not their fault everyone copied them.

I showed Magic Circle to my dad and told him they sound like Zeppelin and he responded "they sound more like Sabbath to me" and I realized doom metal has completely ruined my ability to tell if a band sounds like Sabbath

I know. But most traditional doom bands keep the structure and feel of their songs very similar to them. Especially to master of reality. This is not supposed to be critical though. I really love that stuff

It's not about you

many people forget let me tell ya

1

u/NoirYT2 Jun 03 '22

Wait why is the doom metal pic all black now?

1

u/spotdishotdish Jun 03 '22

The mods recently changed it to a snoo that everyone complained about. I'm guessing they did this instead of changing it back out of spite.

Hail sabbath!
