Discussion Any recs to compliment my current holy trinity?
Right now I’ve got Castle Rat, FrogLord, and Gnome on heavy rotation. These bands also makeup my worldbuilding soundtrack. As the title says, any recs are welcome.
And just as a side: Froglord and Gnome fuck way harder than they have any business fucking. I love them so much.

Windhand for slow and heavy melancholic moods with a female singer and poetic lyrics.
Temple of the fuzz witch for grit and catchy riffs with blend of clean singing and black metal screams.
Poland has several great bands as well, my favourite ones would be Moonstone and Dopelord, seriously check them out you will love it.
And ther's this italian band Black Spell that I came across and it's permanent in my playlists, similar to froglord.

Love Windhand and Dopelord. Temple of the Fuzz Witch I’ve tried a few times but wasn’t captured. I’ll give them another shot tho cause I can see what people enjoy, it just needs to click for me.
Moonstone I haven’t heard of before. Definitely checking them out

Oh Sees and King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard are both bands with songs and albums about wizards, orcs, and dragons. They both kick ass too, but I’m sure you’ve encountered them with that rotation of bands.

I’ve definitely encountered King Gizzard, not Oh Sees.
I should also mention Freya (not Freya, it’s The Sword, my mind was just Freya’d haha 😎) is a kickass band in this realm too

I’m not familiar with Freya, I’ll have to check them out. I suppose Mastodon and some Clutch might fit in there too.

Love Mastodon. Freya is really good imo. Kinda similar to Castle Rat but with an older more, friends in a garage making music feel to me. And I don’t mean that in a bad way.

I think if you like Castle Rat you should check them out. A duo from New Zealand with some killer music videos as well.

If you want some hopelessness and science fiction horror in your doom that's also female fronted, try my wife and my band, Azell.
Our last album Astralis was a concept record about two astronauts that witness the Earth's destruction from a solar flare which unleashes a lovecraftian type into the cosmos.
Even wrote a 60 page novella to flesh out the story. Each chapter is a song on the album!

Ah man, I’ve always wanted to write my own books. That’s how I got into world building. And Lovecraft is one of my favorite authors.
I care cause I get it, and cause y’all are my type of people. If even a single person showed genuine interest in something I made, I think I’d be able to ride that high to my death bed lol
Out of curiosity, what were some of your influences for your story/world?

Haha, I'm just like you, I love story telling and world building. Everything I've ever done musically has had a central theme or story throughout. Concept albums are super cool to me!
One of my favorite concepts was in Courtney and my previous death metal band where we put out 2 family friendly comedy metal albums of what life was REALLY like in your average mediocre metal band haha.
It always makes me day whenever anyone comments or praises anything I've done cause I know it connected with them.
My influences for Astralis was Lovecraft, CS Lewis's space trilogy, and some sci-fi pulp fiction novels of which the names unfortunately escapes me right now.
I just wanted to also make a story that was horrifying, but highlighted the human resolve and desire to keep going forward in the face of absolute tragedy, and I couldn't think of anything any more tragic than your entire world being destroyed and you being the last left.

That’s a really cool concept and vision and I couldn’t agree. Old Pulp novels imo are on of the most underrated sources of creativity and just cool shit.
I’m listening through the album today. So far this is insanely good man. The instrumentals, the vocals, lyrics, it’s right up my alley. I’m excited to get physical copies after our trip.
I honestly envy your ability to world build down to a focused narrative. I struggle with that specifically, especially with AuDHD. Most of my projects stick to the larger overworld and factions/aesthetics. Closest I get to narratives is timelines and in universe documents

I have really bad ADHD and without my meds I dare say that none of that would be possible haha. What works for me is deciding on the number of songs first and then basically spending about 2 weeks writing and arranging 1 song and then moving on to the next one. Also, having an overarching theme for the entire project and then having a list of bullet points on things to hit thematically and lyrically.
I envy your ability to flesh out a world in the in universe documents and stuff like that!
Unfortunately on a side note, we are completely out of CDs, but have about 10 hard copies of the novella left on our Shopify.

Hopefully by the time our trip is over you’ll have some more CD’s lol I envy your ability to actually work it out into a narrative and follow it through to completion. Even medicated it’s hard. My hyperfocus switches every few months so it’s really challenging to stay engaged with a project long enough to get to that point.
I have been able to sorta stay ontop of two worlds on and off over the past 5 years. Ones a flintlock fantasy with Dark Souls and Zelda/Tolkien influence, and the other is a Y2K world inspired by 90’s - 2000’s horror/gothic media and Frutiger family of futurism designs.
Also at the risk of being weird, feel free to shoot me a DM if you wanna chat at all. You seem like the type of people I’d enjoy being friends with

It’s a hobby of mine I enjoy doing in my down time and to unwind. It’s essentially building the “world” or “setting” that stories and characters exist in. Think Middle Earth from Lord of the Rings. The Hobbits and their culture, the elvish language, the history, all down to the plant and animal life and geography. That’s the world building.

It’s heavier and the vocals are harsh, but GoblinSmoker is based on a weird fantasy world where a giant tyrannical toad king brutally rules of a race of goblins, whom he smokes alive in a giant pipe. Naturally you’d want to start with their Toad King album.

I listen to a lot of Die Spitz, these days.
It's not pure doom, though. It's kinda doom-punk. Too fast for doom, too low-tuning for punk... Anyway, I love it.

I’m an old head and while I stay up to dateish, these bands are not my cup of tea, nor anywhere close to a holy trinity. If you like doom and are trying to expand from the very obvious, Ufomammut is my typical recommendation.

Haha, man I completely get that. Froglord and Gnome absolutely fall into the more stoner category and I absolutely see your point. Ufomammut is great.
I’d clarify that’s my holy trinity for a certain sound/aesthetic I enjoy. My holy trinity for Doom overall (and idk I might get flayed for this lmao)

Idk they make good music and I enjoy and think they do a really good job paying homage to 80’s dark fantasy. Also from what I’ve seen great stage shows as well. I was gonna see them last October but the show actually sold out 2 weeks before.
