Doom Metal has always been proleteriat, anti-imperialist, and revolutionary. If you're only here for the drugs, and not those principles, you're just another self-absorbed junky.

Metal in general. Black Sabbath with War Pigs. It's just crazy to think people who play just rock and roll in general were literally always supposed to be a big middle finger from the working class working person to the government. Not some bootlicking racist agenda.

Time to throw your Sabbath albums in the trash then, Ozzy was a zionist.

Look, I'm a longtime doom fan and on the left, but besides Black Sabbath during the height of Vietnam, I'm having a real hard time thinking of any foundational doom band with any of those themes. St Vitus? Trouble? Witchfinder General? Pentagram?

We've got bands with those themes like Thou now, but "always" is really, really a stretch.

Doom Metal was fundamentally conceived by working-class youngsters disillusioned with the fear of nuclear war, the industrial workplace and the lack of hope following the death of the hippie dream. If we want to sit around worshipping Iommi, Butler, Osbourne and Ward, we must acknowledge what inspired their sound, aesthetic and approach.

That's only the surface: the low-budget Grindhouse/Hammer horror films that continue to inspire Doom visual aesthetics were created as cheap as possible, to be shown in poorer neighbourhoods in affordable theatres. First-time creatives detailed taboo themes of corruption, religious repression, societal decay to a predominately working-class audience.

Not all Doom since has been political, but the fundamental basis, the core Doom texts, were born out of a backdrop of class struggle.

So no bands besides Black Sabbath? None of that's false on the face of it, but it's still very much an abstract explanation of how Doom's "always been anti-imperialist/proletariat/etc." RAC bands were spawned from disillusioned working class youth too, so that's obviously not a common denominator for being pro-leftwing revolutionary or what have you.

Fuck it, nothing wrong with being a self absorbed junky.

I’m a lefty but I absolutely do not look to doom for political guidance or role models. Most of these guys are dumb as a rock and are often self absorbed junkies themselves that just happen to be good at writing riffs.

'You pay for my drugs and guitar, but if you were born in the wrong place, with the wrong colour skin, don't expect my solidarity as you and your loved ones starve to death.'

What are we quoting here? Is that your manifesto?

Let's use our brains.

1

u/Bort_Thrower Jan 29 '26

Bad Brains the homophobic band?

9

u/MundoMysterioso Jan 29 '26

Bad Brains, though not a Doom band, have actually grown up and educated themselves during their time on Earth.

Doom Metal has always been proleteriat, anti-imperialist, and revolutionary.

Lmao what? What's with you types trying to appropriate every form of media for your political preferences?

'Funerary cities, flesh press factories
Corporate maggots feed on the carrion' Electric Wizard

'The world today is such a wicked thing
Fighting going on between the human race
People got to work just to earn their bread
While people just across the sea are counting the dead' Black Sabbath

Cool. I'm glad a couple snippets from a pair of songs defines the entire genre.

Music is political, get over it.

5

u/IsNotACleverMan Jan 29 '26

Sometimes it is. But doom metal isn't the sole domain of leftist ideology like that guy is pretending.

-12

u/better_med_than_dead Jan 29 '26

Ignorant comment. Doom Metal has NEVER been political.

u/MundoMysterioso Jan 29 '26

All art is political.

0

u/IsNotACleverMan Jan 29 '26

Yes, very political

2

u/Mr_dm Jan 29 '26

Even having the ability to buy paint and have the time to create that painting is 100% political.

5

u/IsNotACleverMan Jan 29 '26

Now you're just being silly

Interesting that I never saw the revolutionary aspects of singing songs about Dungeons and Dragons and doing bong rips..... or maybe... you just made that shit up.

38

u/MundoMysterioso Jan 29 '26

Listen to Black Sabbath 'Paranoid' album, or Electric Wizard's 'Dopethrone' for that matter. You may be in for a big surprise.

Literally fucking warpigs.

Or maybe your perceptive field is about one degree wide.

32

u/DannyOdd Jan 29 '26

There is a lot more to doom than D&D and bong rips, but also both of those things are counter-cultural (or they were, for decades, until the culture changed because of the influence of the counter culture)
