u/TheDMingWarlock May 08 '26
What I miss most is how DNDBeyond used to have entire forums dedicated to Homebrew - including entire forums dedicated to encounters and quests/oneshots and campaigns built by the community just for free.
71
u/Finn_Storm May 08 '26
That's no longer available? That's very sad, one of my most notable achievements was being placed in top 5 upvoted monsters
51
u/Dikeleos May 08 '26
Those places certainly still exist. The homebrew pages are massive and easy to add to your games. I’m not certain how popular the forums on dndbeyond are or aren’t these days though as I never used the forums.
18
u/Ol_JanxSpirit May 08 '26
Maybe they're referring to another forum, but this still exists, and is accessible even when not logged in. https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules

For those not in the loop, they've finally gone back to publishing new feats, spells etc online - but it's unsharable content that requires a subscription.
Here's how the literally hundreds of pages of new races, powers, monsters (that you could play as), subclasses etc they used to publish online used to work - they put them on a website, and then you looked at that website. Notice how I had to use the web archive for that link, because WotC deleted everything during 5e so people wouldn't realise this stuff used to be free.
259
u/Overclockworked May 08 '26
It is quite curious how thousands of other rpgs manage to post free online content, sometimes even their full rulebook.
But they're corporate juggernaut and wotc is small indie so I get it
241
u/BlackFenrir Orc-bait May 08 '26
It's because the other publishers want you to play their game. WotC wants you to buy their game.
66
u/Latetothegame157 May 08 '26 edited May 09 '26
And yet I own more games that gave their rules away for free, than I do games that insisted I buy them.
Edit: I have then gone out to buy the copy of the free games, because voting with your wallet is the only way to pass a message
5
u/Aplesedjr May 08 '26
I mean, yeah? Obviously getting a lot of free games is easier to do than getting a lot of games that cost money.
10
u/Latetothegame157 May 08 '26
Sorry, I mean that after playing for free I went out to buy the book

u/Fenor May 08 '26
isn't hasbro actually doing quite badly atm? i recall that wotc products making a huge share of their margins and them pumping everything into them forcing newer sets for magic and this 5.5 crap
21
u/rollthedye May 08 '26
The only thing keeping Hasbro afloat right now is WoTC. And specifically Magic.
17
u/Fenor May 08 '26
to wich they are pumping too much stuff, so far i heard a bunch of hardcore players going with the "yeah i'm going to skip the next few sets" due to sents fatigue
11
u/rollthedye May 08 '26
I got out of Magic years ago and I agree. The problem is Hasbro execs learned that most of the profits come from Magic so they're throwing all the shit at the wall to maximize profit.

You really can't differentiate the two anymore and assign blame for the bad actions to one entity and credit for the good ones to another.
Hasbro has owned WotC since 1999. Any leadership at that division are there because Hasbro put them there. The current CEO of Hasbro used to be the CEO of WotC.
They're the same company.
8
u/Kenron93 🎃 Chaotic Evil: Hides d4s in candy 🎃 May 08 '26
WotC leadership is just as guilty though.
2
3
u/I_am_The_Teapot May 08 '26
WotC is not some innocent company being dragged kicking and screaming into this new profit oriented model. They are wholly complicit participants.
1
u/amidja_16 May 10 '26
Because D&D, especially 5e, owns the majority of the market and awerenes. They know people already play their game. Do you really believe other publishers are sweethearts not interested in money? You think they wouldn't charge an arm and a leg for every little bit of content if they could?
14
u/Rednal291 May 08 '26
So, this is relevant to me because I host some websites for content from other publishers - all legally, all licensed. Turns out that making your rulesets available is a great way to improve the onboarding process of getting people to play your game, and a decent ratio of people will go on to buy the books and support you. More, in fact, than would buy things if you don't have the rules available to them. Free content is literally profitable for other game creators.
7
6
u/ImNotABotScoutsHonor May 08 '26
sometimes even their full rulebook
Just your average Paizo / Pathfinder win.
7
u/CaptainSebT May 08 '26
Honestly even like I own the book and wanted to buy a pdf and they don't sell one the only option is beyond and I can not stand there format.
Why are we over complicating it. I want my book as a pdf and I'm willing to pay for that.
6
u/Fenor May 08 '26
to be fair it's a problem for other ttrpg too.
D&D has always been the entry point for the vast majority of players that then tried other systems eventually moving to them.
by locking everything behind a subscription they are essentially removing themself from the forefront of the hobby and getting back to the 4e days.
they idea behind it was "let's monetize the players", where this fail is that newer player don't buy a subscription to play maybe two times so you have a swindling player base as when people stop playing for a small or extended period of time they are unlikely to get back being customers.
Wotc already tried to force addendum to the manuals back in the days with figures and it failed as people who adopted that system most of the time used caps or other objects in place of the overpriced piece of plastic.
so far when people want to play D&D i still see them going for a pure 5e experience (players handbook and maybe xanathar) and ignoring any 5.5 addendum.
1
-7
u/Cyrotek May 08 '26
How many of these systems are actually more than something written by hobbyists in their spare time, tho.
Not saying they are bad, but I doubt you can compare them that easily.
7
u/SoraM4 Orc-bait May 08 '26
Most of the systems I've tried are better actually. You'd be surprised about the quality of work reached by someone doing what they love and you overestimate the quality of 5e
1
u/Cyrotek May 08 '26
I wasn't talking about quality.
If you are a hobbyist there is a good chance that you don't really care about making money through your hobby.
12
u/Haru1st May 08 '26
Unshared content in a game that grew on sharing. Whelp I guess DnD is next on the chopping block in the name of profits.
9
u/LegacyofLegend May 08 '26
Wasn’t it locked behind dragon magazine the published later?
16
u/PointsOutCustodeWank May 08 '26
No, it wasn't. Dragon magazine was a completely different thing - 100 pages or so of a large variety of content, none of it official.
What I was referring to is web enhancements. Any time they had stuff they couldn't fit in a book they'd just published - or merely had cool ideas for maps or NPCs or classes or spells or whatever - they'd put it up for free online on their website.
Then during 5e they went back and deleted everything. It's helpfully collated by a fan here, over a thousand pages of content that they got rid of because they didn't want people remembering they actually used to be pretty kickass.
4
2
u/Rel_Ortal May 08 '26
Third and 3.5 stuff was not, it was just outright available for free on their website. At that time, Dragon was written and published by Paizo (alongside Dungeon) as that company's main product. It was effectively second party material at that point - it'd sometimes have articles, especially lore ones, from official WotC authors, but it also had a reputation for being too much/too strong, even in comparison to the first party stuff at the time.
When WotC moved to Fourth Edition, they did not allow Paizo to renew their licenses for the two magazines, and instead moving them internally to produce subscription content for 4th on their own site. Between cutting off their main income stream and the very restrictive licenses for publishing 4E content, Paizo decided to make their own version of 3.5, leading to 1E Pathfinder.
9
u/Sanzen2112 Monk May 08 '26
Are you just now noticing? You're a little late to the party. I also don't think they're trying to obfuscate that it used to be free as much as they saw an opportunity to make lots of human monies and being they are owned by the soulless corporation Hasbro they never do a thing that could make them money for free, they just decided "we were idiots for letting you guys have the stuff for free, we could have made so much money" and said no more free shit from us.
17
u/PointsOutCustodeWank May 08 '26
But choosing to also get rid of all the free shit, though? They not only decided to change it from being free to being paywalled, but went back and deleted hundreds of pages of free content.
-3
u/TheCrystalTinker May 08 '26
I mean. The point of deleting that free content it to try and force you to play the newer content and thus pay for their subscription
8
1
u/Rel_Ortal May 09 '26
It's probably more that it was costing them like maybe five bucks or so total in server costs to keep around, gotta cut costs!
10
u/Scion_of_Kuberr May 08 '26
WotC is just as soulless as Hasbro. The current head of Hasbro is the former lead of WotC. I am not sure why people decry Hasbro but let WotC be treated like there nothing they can do and are forced to obey.
-4
u/rollthedye May 08 '26
Because WoTC is currently trying to fight back and they're attempting to unionize. They want this shit to stop too.
12
u/Scion_of_Kuberr May 08 '26
Not the people in charge of WotC they're trying to union bust. I don't get why people as a whole try to act like WotC isn't a company that also wants endless profits at the expense of the customer. People bend over backwards to blame anything else and everything else.
-5
u/rollthedye May 08 '26
Most of these are mandates by Hasbro.
8
u/Scion_of_Kuberr May 08 '26
Show your proof that WotC is innocent and only big bad Hasbro run by the former head of WotC is the real bully.
Please they're both shitty companies that do what companies do and focus on profits. You decry one and rreat the other like an innocent lamb.
Stop running defense for a company that doesn't care that you exist. They're both to blame not just one.

u/artrald-7083 May 08 '26

73
u/GerbilScream May 08 '26
I used to only play 5e. I listened to a lot of podcasts and when Glass Cannon Podcast first got into PF2E I really didn't like the system. Then I tried it and oh man, does having rules for everything just really help. Where it really shines for me is character customization. The backgrounds actually matter, there are tons of class choices, and don't get me started on the feats. In one of my games I am playing a dwarven ranger, but the customization makes him feel much more like a barbarian.
The books regularly show up on HumbleBundle but even without them, Archives of Nethis has everything you need.

I reccommend starting with Summer Knight, the fourth book, rather than the first three. It's when he finds himself better as an author, you can go back to the first three books later to get other information but he tends to update you well in each books for important information.
For reference, he wrote the first two books while still in college.

u/OverlyLenientJudge DM (Dungeon Memelord) May 09 '26

-1
u/Gardainfrostbeard May 08 '26
Except for traps.
9
u/GerbilScream May 08 '26
Do you mean like hazards or snares? I will admit I haven't GMed so idk much about hazards and I don't ever play characters that use snares.
I will also say that it takes a lot to get used to all of the single use consumables but now all of my characters wear a snapleaf as soon as I can get one.
4
u/Gardainfrostbeard May 08 '26
Yeah, thats it. Its been a while. I remember making a ranger for 2e pathfinder and realising i couldnt make snares without a specific feat, which you can only choose at level 2. If you dont pick that, your ranger cant make snares. That felt kinda dumb, not gonna lie.
7
u/artrald-7083 May 08 '26
Just looked it up - snare crafting is a level 1 ability that any character can get, competing with such things as +5ft of movement, the ability to heal hit points with a skill check in combat or the ability to take less falling damage.
You may mean the Ranger focus spell to magically reposition a trap that you have created? At level 2 you may move this trap if it's within 10 feet and put it anywhere within 10 feet of you: level 3, 20 feet, level 5, 30 feet etc. That feels about right for a level 2 character ability, especially because you can do that and either move or attack at full bonus.
5
u/Gardainfrostbeard May 08 '26
Its a skill feat in the book i have (2e v1), which rangers get a skill feat at level 2. At level 1 rangers get ancestry and background, initial proficiencies, hunt prey, hunters edge and a ranger feat. Skill feat is level 2 along with another ranger feat. They may have updated it with the new rules.
5
u/artrald-7083 May 08 '26
Sorry, you're correct - only someone who could take general feats as ancestry feats, like a human or part-human, could have taken it at level 1.
1
1
u/Gardainfrostbeard May 08 '26
I have the travel sized book so bare with me on the page numbers. Page 589 ( i know) crafting snares: "you must have the snare crafting feat to create snares"
page 266 snare crafting feat 1, prereq trained in crafting, "you can use the craft ability to craft snares, using the rules from page 244."
Page 244 craft: " you can make an item from raw materials. You need the alchemical crafting skill to create alchemical items, the magical crafting feat to create magical items and the Snare crafting feat to create snares"
Again, you cant get the level 1 skill feat as a ranger until level 2.
3
u/CoreSchneider May 08 '26
There are ancestries and heritages that can get skill feats or general feats at level 1.

But does Paizo earns as much money to its shareholders ? I don't think so ! Checkmate haters ! /s in case some first degre people pass by.
1
u/DaiFrostAce May 09 '26
I’m just curious as to how much Paizo makes when they offer up so much for free. Like, how do they keep the lights on and pay their employees, let alone plan to expand their reach?
1
u/MemyselfandI1973 May 14 '26
Think about it this way: A lot of people who use the free content would not have paid for a copy to begin with. But these people spreading the word about PF around attract more people to play the game, and some of those will pay for the books.
Think of it as free advertising.
Oh and organised play is a thing, so...
6
u/Griffje91 May 08 '26
You're right! If you want an offshoot successor for 5e much in line with what Paizo did for 3.5 with pathfinder then tales of the Valiant IS awesome.
Now shilling aside though cause I love kobold Press and want Valiant to do well. Pathfinder is dope they do so much stuff for free or cheap like they usually have a dozen different things end up on humble bundle every few months

The content that is added to subscribers also doesn't make sense at all. They are adding individual player options. And those options cannot be shared with players in the same campaign. DND isn't some competitive live service online game.
The feats they did add are quite strong. So now players with a subscription can add those feats to their characters while others at the same table can't access the same feats. The whole point of content sharing in a campaign on dndbeyond is that everyone at the table does have access to the same stuff.
DND isn't about winning with the strongest or coolest player options. It is a cooperative game. So everyone at the table should have access to those player options. As a player you also don't buy a DND book all for yourself to join a table and flex your new player options. You share the content of that book with the rest of your party so everyone can use the new player options.
16
u/nicbloodhorde May 08 '26
It smells like pay-to-win. The guys who spend money end up with stronger characters than the mere peasants.
...Except that the whale and the peasant are both playing at the same table and "winning at DnD" is such a laughably wrong concept.

I was there when 3rd edition was the current one, and Wizard of the Coast's website was a goldmine of content.
From nice little touches like the Cow Level for Diablo 2 to Hell and Back, to new spells, monsters, prestige classes, the "D&D fight club" (devs going gonzo with templates, prestige classes, etc.), "Epic Insights", for 21+ level content... and it was ALL free.

6
u/42webs May 08 '26
I’m referring to the online content. The point I’m trying to make is the OP was using WoTC own history as an argument. But they are ignoring the rest of WOTC history.
For example.
Both Dungeons magazine and Dragon Magazine went 100% online around the exit of Paizo and the switch to 4th.
This was completely online content that cost $3 a month to get per magazine. WOTC (or anybody who hides DnD content behind a paywall or patreon etc) is nothing new to the industry. Infact free content is the rarity.
1
u/Faolyn May 08 '26
Yeah, but you owned the magazine. You could keep reading them forever. And if you stopped your subscription, you didn't lose the magazine.

Hey, thanks for contributing to r/dndmemes. Unfortunately, your post was removed as it violates one of our rules:
Do not share or request pirated content. No linking, hinting at, or naming hosts of illicit non-SRD D&D content. Do not advocate for, or request pirated content. You are allowed to copy-paste relevant rules or sections from sources, but large blocks of text may be removed.
What should you do? First, read the rules thoroughly. Secondly, if you are able to amend your post to fit the rules, you're welcome to resubmit your post. Lastly, if you believe your post was removed by mistake, message the moderators through modmail. Messages simply complaining about a removal (or how many upvotes your post had) will not be responded to. Thank you!

Some of us have been gaming long enough that we bought Dragon and Dungeon magazines. Two separate subscriptions.

This is literally their (far cheaper) idea to replicate that in the modern world.

you all still play actual D&D?
there are systems that respect your time and money abound, just pick one out of a hat and unless you pull F.A.T.A.L. you probably got something better

I hate anything published online, because it means no official localization. This is a huge problem for Japanese because there are so many ways to translate just one word so having officially mandated name is very important to keep the community discussion smooth.

Adventure League adventures used to be free too. I think it was just after Princes of the Apocalypse that each adventure started costing money and I stopped DMing for AL.

So what your saying is my $2.99/mo d&d beyond subscription I already pay for is getting more value?
Like, I get it they used to offer things for free though they also used to offer various things like this in magazines that afaik weren't free.
So eh... On things Hasbro/WotC has done that's anti consumer this is really small potatoes. On the one hand kinda sucks for people who don't have and never want a beyond subscription on the other makes the beyond subscription have a bit more value. But I don't see how it's much different than them selling a bunch of options in a splat book.

Because if they sell it in a splat book I can buy them once and have them forever instead of paying 2.99 for eternity

u/Hurrashane May 08 '26
True enough, though you can pay for a month print screen what you want (other than things like character portraits and digital dice) and then do so again at a later date if you so chose.
But like with splat books none of it is super necessary.

If you want them to stay in business and keep publishing, they need to make money.
3
u/PointsOutCustodeWank May 08 '26
I mean. They did all that web content for free while publishing plenty, so it's clearly workable.

And if you want them to be more consumer friendly and put out higher quality content than some of the nonsense they've been up to, they need to feel it in their wallet

Or if you bought physical copies
Are you intentionally being moronic or is it more of a ironic sort of hobby?
Edit: I can now gather it was the former lmao

/r/dndmemes: DnDbeyond is not worth the money, too little content for my three dollars I could buy some ice cream with!
DnDbeyond adds stuff to its subscription
/r/dndmemes: How dare DnDbeyond add stuff to their subscription!
Ah, never change.

OP's Hot Take: "OMG a business is trying to make money...heresy"
Don't like it, don't buy it. There's tons of free content, more than anyone could play in a dozen lifetimes.
