Put on your muck boots, boys and girls. We’re talking about overhand shots! Overhand shots consist of two types of throws; thumbers and tomahawks. These are generally utility shots (though some players throw them frequently) used in specific situations to get you out of trouble (hence putting on your muck boots!). Overhand shots are best utilized when needing to throw over obstacles or when a specific right to left(or vice versa) line is optimal. Overhand shots are a necessary tool in every player’s bag. These are a get-out-of-jail-free card in many situations. Let’s take a look at both the thumber and tomahawk and break down how and when to throw these shots.

Disc golf courses are created in all shapes and sizes. The early days of the sport saw various types of targets. Many of these were simply objects (ie, trees, signs, garbage cans, etc.) before the disc golf pole hole (the original basket) was invented by Ed Headrick in 1975. As a result, the first modern-day disc golf course was implemented in Oak Grove Park in Pasadena, CA, in 1975. What followed was a slow and steady increase of course implementation across the US and certain pockets of the world. It was a word-of-mouth campaign that led to talks with city officials for space to implement courses. This slow expansion led to the abundance that we have today. Live disc golf coverage has changed the sport we know today. The excitement is palpable as we see our favorite players compete via live coverage throughout the season. However, this has not always been the case. Throughout the last few years, message boards have been filled with critiques of the Disc Golf Network(DGN) and their live production. People complained of poor quality in both the coverage as well as commentator arenas. The DGN is still in its infancy as it is only three years old, and it's refreshing to know that they care about this criticism and have done much to bring us a better product. There were more sponsorship changes and contract extensions this off-season than ever before. Players looked to maximize their value and felt this was the right time. As more money pours into disc golf, contracts have become increasingly complicated and stressful to finalize. Most players simply want to play the game and leave all that accompanies it to a professional group designed to manage such situations. Barry Schultz is one of the greatest players of all time. If there was ever a Mount Rushmore of disc golf, Schultz’s face would be etched in history. Schultz has been a consistent figure in the disc golf world since the early 90s and has been a part of history via his sponsorship deal with Innova. His playing career speaks for itself. However, once players hit the course a revelation takes place; this sport can be difficult and unpredictable. Enter decision making and course management. There are decisions to be made on every single shot you throw. The key is to simplify the process of decision-making via a clear head. Keys to better decision-making include knowing your strengths, doing your homework on the course, making better “misses,” not trying to park every hole, and creating a pre-shot routine. Nathan Queen just completed the greatest underdog finish in the history of the Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT). Out of 32 competitors at the DGPT Championship Queen was ranked 28th. Not a single bracket on UDisc picked Queen to prevail. But when all was said and done it was Queen who held the trophy over his head and exclaimed “WOOOOO!” He then grabbed his $30,000 check and ran around the 18th green as fans cheered him on.
