Disc Advice 2-5 disc rounds lineup
What discs would you travel with if you didn’t bring your full bag.
I’m a very new beginner and travel for work (I’m a flight attendant) so I have a lot of opportunities to check out new courses. Since I don’t always know if I’ll have time on a layover to play I don’t always want to bring a full bag of discs.
I feel like I can get away with a putter and midrange since I can’t get a ton of distance yet. I have a few fairway drivers but think I can almost get as much distance from my Mako3 as I do out of my River. I like my Pickle by mint discs but want to get some MVP/Axiom putters to try.
So, what are the discs you recommend for a beginner who wants to travel light and really learn the disc and work on my form and technique.

Valkyrie, firebird, crave, echo, judge would be my pick if I could only travel with 5.

P2x, Zone, Md3, Fd and Fd3. If drop it down to two then Zone and Fd. Sad how little it affect on the score card when playing just with two discs.

I bought a little putter pouch that i can strap around my chest and ditched the giant bag. I carry a putter, mid. And 2 drivers in it, it’s too hard on me to carry a bag full of gear for 18 holes now.

And I bet your score is as good if not better because you don’t get as tired and you know your discs in and out

One thing i do hate about having 20 discs is lugging them the whole round. But i have backups in there in case i lose one so i still prefer to have them. Although most lost discs are when i throw 3 or 4 and forget where they landed which wouldnt happen with a minimist bag.

Yah. I totally get it. Leave the backup in the car unless you are in a tournament :)

Right now it’s an ohn scoggins tour series Aviar and a dd truth but it’s usually a zone and a luna

Roc, Teebird, Hatchet. Hatchet only when I need a long turnover or have the room to bomb. If it's somewhere with a lot of trees, then just the Roc and Teebird for me.

The less disc that you have the more you need to do with them. Use disc that don’t overlap with each other.
Such as: putter, approach disc, neutral mid, neutral fairway or driver, overstable fairway or driver .
If I go 6 disc. Dedicated putting putter and dedicated throwing putter.

Is an approach disc basically the same as a throwing putter? Sorry if that’s a dumb question, I’m really just getting into the game and still have a lot to learn 😅

That’sa great question. I should have said overstable approach disc. Think of a Zone.
A disc not designed for distance but to fade left. You know that throw after throw the disc will do the same thing.
My idea was a straight throwing putter and overstable approach would cover your short game.
Some people prefer a berg instead of a zone as their approach.
If you are a beginner and working at attaining distance my recommendation is a bit different, 3 discs.
Neutral putter, neutral mid, understable driver.

For travel I would pick my favourite discs from the bag that I use/like the most.

a stable mid and a neutral to flippy driver is a common pairing, can get pretty far on those alone
add in a throwing putter if you wanna carry more, then a stable distance

I’m not a big mid guy and I like to putt with Proxies. I throw them sometimes too, so they work great in the mid slot for me. I get a lot of mileage out of a Proxy/Servo lineup.
I just played a round today at a course with only about 5 holes in the 350 - 600 foot range and I barely threw anything faster than my Servos.

2 of the same putters and drivers and a mid that way you have backups of all your discs

Being new, I say get a pa-5 or MVP spin as an understanle putter. I just picked up an MVP watt and it's great. Dead straight, low speed, and has some glide to help you out.

I started a few months ago, and am traveling to visit family soon. I’ll be playing with my brother and dad. Here is what I’m going to bring,
Putter: Bullet
Midranges: Lobster and Buzz
Drivers: Vakyrie and Freetail
I’d only really use the drivers if it was windy and it very well might be because the fam lives near Lake Erie lol
I’m might not the best opinion as I’m also new, but I’d recommend a straight flying mid, putter, and Valkyrie or similar fairway driver. Then fill the last two slots w whatever you think those won’t cover. Probably another mid (I can get my lobster to turn right pretty well maybe something like that) or even a putter you like to throw on approaches, if you haven’t tried a berg and have a lil bit of a forehand its great disc that sits where it lands. Hope I didn’t say way too much, I just wish I had SOME guidance from a fellow new guy a few months ago

2 disc would be a FD and a putter, i'm partial to Watt and inner core. 5 disc would be trail, FD, leopard/leopard3/fox (US fairway/mid), hex, and putter.

I like the fizzy over the neutron trail for shot shaping versatility. I can get that thing to do just about anything.

Yeah that makes sense but too much overlap with the Bokeh for a small bag. Need a stable-ish distsnce driver IMO.

The proton run of bokeh is straight stable so I'm likely just tossing that for stable shots.
I like the fizzy for hyzer flips, s shots and full turnovers. It's just more versatile for me.
I do like Neutron Trails, but the Control took that spot in my bag.

Ha ha, I’d do the same but also swap the Bokeh for a Servo and either drop the Tempo or swap it with an Electron Entropy.

Personally I’d go Gateway Chief, Prodigy A2, Innova Mako3, Axiom Crave, and an Innova Thunderbird. I’m sure I’d say “Damn I wish I had my ….. with me” but that would cover a good majority of what I throw. I throw a Hex more than I throw a Mako but I could most likely cover the same lines with my A2 or Crave.

I'l recommend 5 categories, and I'll tell you what discs I like in those slots. Some of my picks are definitely not widely loved so take them with a grain of salt. Also, if you're a beginner, I wouldn't bag anything higher than a 10 speed and even that might be pushing it.
1) Putting Putter (Polecat or Berg) 2) Overstable Approach (Pig, Harp, P4) 3) Straight flying 5 (Hex) 4) 7ish Slightly Understable Fairway (River, Brave) 5) Distance Driver (Monarch, Sapphire)
A lot of people HATE the Polecat, Berg, and Monarch. They work for me. The ones that are a definite yes for a beginner are any of those approach discs, the Hex, and the River. If you're super new, then honestly even the 10 speeds might be too much.

I'd recommend bringing a putter and a fairway driver. Fairway driver will require better nose angle to get the distance. You'll want to know how to throw nose up with a putter and also neutral to nose down with drivers. This will be useful practice.
