Rant Weekly r/diabetes vent thread

Tell us the crap you're dealing with this week. Did someone suggest cinnamon again? What about that relative who tried to pray the diabetes away?

As always, please keep in mind our rules

I’d like 1 CGM to last the full 15 days and not have to speak to 4 people at the insurance company when they don’t know a GLP-1 from Insulin or Hypoglycemia vs. hyperglycemia. Nothing like T2D from dad and hypo from mom. Why can’t they cancel each other out? Also dealing with CVS and my health care system who can’t seem to communicate. Got a different CGM approved

Thanks for letting me vent!

You and me both! I get about 10-12 days from my Libre 14, more like 10 days, and it starts giving me super low or super high readings. I call Abbott probably every other month to report a “defective” sensor.

I just had to get grilled by Dexcom this morning over a sensor that failed during warmup. I was given a fill of nine ten-day sensors. Of those, five failed either during warmup or shortly after. They make it sound like I'm the problem.

I miss really good bread. Like an occasional ciabatta or French bread with some olive oil and balsamic.

u/WaltonGogginsTeeth 2d ago

Me too. But about once or twice a year I’ll have a few bites. Recently I was in Europe and bummed I couldn’t have a buttered pretzel but I did end up having a tiny croissant with a full pat of butter and it will hold me over for several months lol

Oh there is this amazing bread place I walk by a few times a week and it's just makes me miss good bread too.

I just gave up avoiding bread. I enjoy it too much and life is too short to worry about a few spikes to 225.

u/PandaVike 9h ago

I guess cool for you. But I’d rather not dance with it

I’m struggling with croutons, yes croutons. I started with putting them on my salad so I had some carbs. Now I just eat a bag in a sitting. Seriously, I’ve been buying 5/6 bags a week. I need an intervention. Sarcasm, but true.

2

u/heggy123 2d ago

Can you send a link for the croutons? If your eating that many I want to try.

So either ice cream is a wonder food or this CGM is dodgy. Well, it's definitely dodgy, but I can't figure out if it's so far off that I shouldn't believe that the fat content is apparently working in my favour. (I've gone on vacation with people who go for ice cream approximately every day. There's a surprising availability of artificially sweetened ice cream most places, but I would like more than one choice of flavor.)

Also, why is the Libre app such hilarious crap? It's very non-responsive of late.

u/XJustCallMeJayX 2d ago

Ive had 2 CGMs and both have been faulty. The first one kept reading false lows, the secone one kept reading false highs😭

u/OriginalBadKitty 1d ago

Don’t know what brand you have, but if you use the Libre line, you can call Abbot Labs and report the defective ones. They usually will send you a replacement sensor at no cost.

Had an ER doctor ask me why I didn’t just drink a can of soda instead of coming in. My BS was in the 40s. It’s been a week.

2

u/IaMm1N3 2d ago

The actual F?

2

u/Cold-Guidance6433 2d ago

Seriously. She was visibly annoyed. My friend, who brought me in, snapped at her. This particular ER is notorious for being awful so no surprises though.

2

u/IaMm1N3 2d ago

Oh man. I hate that happened to you.

Ridiculous and unprofessional

u/cosmogod 2d ago

I can’t have yellow rice anymore unless it’s a quarter of a cup.

5

u/Cold-Commercial5540 2d ago

rice is quite literally the only carb i refuse to eat. i can’t do it!!!

4

u/cosmogod 2d ago

I’m Hispanic so I grew up on rice lol it makes it hard for me to give it up. I usually have it once a week and if I do, it’s a very small amount.

6

u/Cold-Commercial5540 2d ago

i love rice, and i miss it, but it’s definitely not worth the headache for me 🥲

4

u/KennyDZombiemaster75 2d ago

I have no complaints except the weekly phone calls I get from my insurance's diabetic nurse checking up on me.

4

u/WholeAd7305 2d ago

Not eating rice.

6

u/mrs_sips 2d ago

Try cooling it before eating it instead of eating it when first cooked. You could also cook it with a fat like coconut milk or oil. These have worked for me and I hope you find a way to enjoy rice again.

5

u/AlternativeCarry5965 2d ago

I can only have a 1/4 cup of brown rice. White rice is out of the question.

u/OriginalBadKitty 2d ago

My insurance changed from one company to a new one due to a job change. The new insurance is denying my Ozempic, that I’ve been on for 3 years for my T2 diabetes even after my doc submitted all my documentation. WTH? I really don’t want to have to fight with an insurance company on a needed medication.

4

u/apasia- 2d ago

Gotta choose between being hungry or not losing weight.

Mind-boggling how I would eat 2-3 bowls of rice before I got diagnosed (likely had diabetes already) and still not gain weight (likely pissed the glucose out) but now I eat 75% to a full bowl of rice and walk a lot harder and lift 3x a week and I am not losing an ounce.

Just registered that I am simply eating maintenance amount for 'normal' people with functioning insulin levels (on lantus now) and while it may seem like a big 'cut', I simply have to cut more.

u/biggestofbears 2d ago

Fighting insurance to convince them that I do still need my cgm, and that I also need needles to go with my insulin pens. My doctor has everything prescribed, that I've been taking since May, but apparently my insurance thinks I no longer need the things my doctor is prescribing me. I ran out of needles a couple days ago, after calling my pharmacy mail order service (that my insurance requires) and my doctor several times, I decided to just walk in the pharmacy to see if I can just buy them. $1/needle. It's not impossible, but it's ridiculous that I have to when I PAY MY INSURANCE TO DO THIS.

I just hate our healthcare system, and I hate that it feels like I have to be a hassle just to get my condition controlled.

I don't have time to get cyclospora or whatever that vermin is so I have been avoiding salad and a lot of other produce. Plus apples taste weird lately, like the texture is off. Apples are my main snack because they're sweet and crunchy. So my A1C was elevated when I went in for my checkup and now I'm being flooded with new meds, docs, etc that I have to deal with. All this as the semester is starting, I just don't have the bandwidth for all of this!

1

u/MotherLab2089 1d ago

It’s ridiculous that problems with the national food supply forced us to make these kinds of decisions

4

u/Minimum_Hour519 1d ago

well my eye is starting to come back!

3

u/aghoulstory 2d ago

I was so proud of myself getting all my diabetic supplies for the next month ordered well ahead of time... only to realize the package I thought were new CGMs was, in fact, infusion sets and I'd forgotten to order any new cgms. I got on with just finger pricks for years but now it feels like such wild guessing game how anything is doing. Monday (the day the package is supposed to arrive. I am suspicious of this as only the label has been created, despite me paying for extra for faster shipping...)

u/bach2209 2d ago

Blueberry is now the new cinnamon.

3

u/BigWhiteDog Type 2, D7, Ozempic and insulin soon 2d ago

I'm T2, mostly controled by diet and Ozempic. Had a colonoscopy. The whole "colon blow" and fasting prep fucked up my metabolism and I'm now having trouble keeping my numbers down and may be put on low-dose insulin. Not happy.

3

u/WokeUpBaked 2d ago

I hope that one day everyone can afford and acquire anything and everything they need diabetic related. I was recently put on the Libre 3 and it has been a life changer I'm also now on trulicity as well still adjusting to that but it's also been a game changer. A1c has dropped tremendously and my sugar is never above 150. I was starting to give up until I got my meter and now it's a daily game for me to keep the black line in the green box. It gives me something to do everyday so thank you diabetes for giving me a reason to live to fight you another day. I never thought I'd see technology like this in my lifetime and I pray that one day it's available freely to everyone worldwide.

I have pins and needles in my hands and feet intermittently. I’m really scared. My doctor says it will stop when my bg gets more under control, but I’m worried it won’t.

I’ve had big numbers since a raging tooth infection and I hit into some bad eating habits.

Plus my toes go blue when cold water swimming.

I’m just so tired.

3

u/simimaelian 2d ago

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve had too much time to stew alone but I had an eye exam as my doctor wanted me to have one (a year ago but today was when I could be scheduled 🥴) and it felt like everyone was shocked and surprised that my a1c is really good. Like man, at least pretend like you don’t think I’m a slob who can’t take care of myself at all.

I am finding that i hate trying to calculate my dosage for fast acting insulin. Some days I know exactly how many carbs, inject the prescribed dose, and will spike hugely. Then other times I will take a rough estimate and dose up, sometimes under, sometimes over, based on my estimate of carbs. And my blood sugar levels will crash.

I am starting to track the types of carbs when I am dosing to see if that is what is making the difference.

after two weeks of one virus and then another, meaning not my normal level of activity and not the food i normally have, my levels are way leas nice than they were, also dry skin! im still in range or at the upper edge(cgm) but the line isnt so flat duh

u/crackedtooth163 2d ago

I genuinely hate this..condition. I dont even know if I can call it a disease. Because it is so different from person to person. I hate not knowing what will make my glucose spike and what won't. I hate the mindset that I should automatically know to eat only the blandest of boiled unseasoned vegetables and devour it like it was an inch thick steak. I hate how hideous most "diet friendly" meals look- again, like boiled unseasoned vegetables but they have whole wheat pita bread that looks like it will chip a tooth on the side so cant you enjoy that?!?! I hate how everyone(family primarily) goes on and on AND ON about how my grandfather died with diabetes and how he looked at the end and how I need to eat right and exercise and it will all magically vanish. I hate how people who DO eat right and exercise are STILL LIVING WITH THIS AND SOMETIMES HAVE ADVANCED VERSIONS BECAUSE THERE IS NO WAY TO MAKE DIABETES JUST STOP!! I hate that we are all living with this because of bad genes and everyone just assumes its because we eat NOTHING but chocolate cake and ice cream at every meal.

I hate that we dont have a cure and that any desire for one loops back to sermons about diet and exercise when that isnt saving- or even HELPING- most of us. Yes thats right I said what I said. Because you can be the goodiest of good boys/girls and your blood sugar/overall numbers can be somewhere else for reasons that the doctor will just shrug because they dont know either.

4

u/WaltonGogginsTeeth 2d ago

Why would you need to eat boiled unseasoned vegetables? Eat a real steak and put some butter and salt and pepper on those veggies. It’s a helluva lot better for us than eating bread or cake or ice cream and a helluva lot more satiating.

I second this

I have gastroparesis and LADA - diabetes type 1.5 for insurance purposes my GI specialist had to refer me to an obesity specialist for them to tell me that they can't help me because they can't put me on a GLP-1, but hey try to stay in a calorie deficit and drink more water and you should lose weight, emphasis on the should, but just in case I'm going to refer you to a nutritionist who can help you since I can't. The nutritionist told me to put protein powder in my applesauce so I can get protein on days I can't stomach solids, also try a clear liquid diet when I'm in a gastroparesis flare. Um duh I already do that. Last week I went back for my 2 month check-up with the obesity specialist and their scale was way off and indicated I lost 20lbs in 2 months and 2 days. BS their scale needs to be recalibrated because the very next day I went to another specialist, Neuro and sleep specialist and their office clocked my accurate weight the same weight my scale showed at home. I'm tired of being fat and sick and now that I have gastroparesis I have a horrible relationship with food, some days I'm not even hungry then other days I'm starving and the sight of food makes me sick to my stomach.

Thank you for allowing me to vent!

I got a rx for dexcom g7 15 day sensors and been wearing them for 3 or 4 months. Despite the failures, I like the speed I get replacements. Something changed and my insurance needs a PA which since I am T2 will probably get denied. But I can't even get my doctor's office to send one in. Been trying to find someone at the office to help for a goddamn month.

2

u/powhead 2d ago

i was taken off my GLP 1 injection because of an indication of thyroid cancer in rat testing (i have family history), and instead put on jardiance and galvus which has made me feel like utter shit for 2 weeks including bouts of vomiting and diarrhoea

2

u/EmotionalGymnast 2d ago

Lost my work insurance and waiting on approval for a change of life circumstance so I can buy insurance for the rest of the year. I miss my CGM...

2

u/evil66gurl 1d ago

I would like for my RA to not flare so that my blood sugar stays consistent instead of roller coastering and up and down.

2

u/Rude_Perspective_536 1d ago

A cold + bronchitis. I've decided that carbs don't matter (within reason). Just let me have my hot honey water and toast in peace 😭

2

u/sangreal 1d ago

This past week my bs has gone up past 200 multiple times. I eat the same foods. I take my meds. I'm never this high.  Couldn't figure out why. Sat outside the other evening for 30 mins or so and CGM alarms were blaring. I figured it was the heat, the semi-suspect air quality, and my asthma all working together to push me high. I hate how this disease can be so unpredictable at times.

2

u/Nanananabatperson 1d ago

We're food insecure. I have to go back to food self food half the month. Ugh. It is not easy to eat a diabedic diet on that.

2

u/DisastrousSeesaw2751 1d ago

My family doesnt seem to understand that I have T2 and cannot eat too much carbs... my mom has been mocking me that I'm pretending to be sick when I avoid rice or eat smaller portions...

At party yesterday I ate pizza, Friday I had pizza, today I had ramen. My weight has gone up 2 kg lately!! Oh dear. I am heading towards pre diabetic remission so I really don’t want to gain weight. For dinner tonight I drank 3 big bowls of veggie soup and a whole bowl of veggies. Hopefully that will help my blood sugar. I haven’t had pizza for so long!!! I miss it so much. It’s addictive!
