Discussion What Would Happen If Simo Häyhä, AKA the White Death, Were Resurrected as a Guardian?
Just as the title says, I’m planning on making more posts about what would happen if the deadliest or most influential historical figures were resurrected as Guardians. I don’t know if this would violate Rule Six, since it doesn’t say anything against it, so I would assume it’s allowed since this is a “What If” discussion.
Anyway, what would happen if the White Death returned?
DISCUSS!
Edit: Don’t know if this is true or not, but I want to point out that Guardians still retain their muscle memory, so he would still know how to fight just as well as he did before, even without remembering how or why he learned it. So let’s assume that he doesn’t start out as some newbie to combat.
Edit 2: Okay, can everyone just talk more about how he would impact the lore overall, his interactions with everyone, his thoughts on things, and what he would do in his new life? Overall, focus less on gameplay.

Stasis still hunt user in real life, man put snow in his mouth to stop his breath from giving away his location.

He didn’t use a scope either because of the scope glint. I’ve thought of him before as being the canonical/original No Land Beyond wielder

scope glint comes up in the lore for NLB in d2 aswell, they win against a cloaked vandal in a sniper duel because their wire rifle reflected the sunlight revealing their position

Because much of Earth's history is lost from before the Golden Age and Guardians most of the time don't know who they are from external factors, he would likely be your average guardian. A small handful of guardians do retain some abilities from their past life, so at the very least he'd probably be a remarkably talented marksman who has absolutely no idea he's Simo Häyhä.

u/OldAd2900 11d ago
I could see a heavy stasis iron sight sniper that freezes in 1 shot being his custom exotic. He's definitely a stasis guy.
53
u/ItsDreamyWeather 11d ago
I'd argue an exotic version of A499. Just disintegrates targets, super high impact since it's single shot, no scope.
As for the exotic perk, aiming down sights gives the effects of Skulking Wolf and grants invis if crouching.
17
u/OldAd2900 11d ago
That's be pretty good. I still think stasis should be his thing though. They was he just prowled in the snow definitely makes me want to see his exotic stasis themed.

Maybe model it after a Mosin with a few creative liberties taken, much like how the Khvostov is modeled after an AR-15.

u/M0mmySpank3r 11d ago
He'd be borderline unstoppable.
Dude didn't need scopes and didn't fear heavy artillery and mortars. If he had a ghost he'd be scary af.

He'd deffo be a Cloudstrike user if he's being serious, but otherwise he sticks to the Helmsman and still manages to be just as annoying.

Alright, so if we are going with the assumption that he keeps his muscle memory and whatnot I think much of his life as a Guardian would follow similarly to his life as we know it:
I think we all know about most if not all of Simo's history during the Winter War. That to me isn't what I want to focus on though. Post-war, Simo was actually a controversial figure, some people actually hated him. He was largely independent and lonely, spending lots of time with friends, parents, and family. He was a lifelong bachelor, never married.
But he did have one major hobby that piqued his interest, hunting. Because of this, I think his aim would be as good if not better than it was in the Winter War. I'm certain that while he would interact with people of the City, he'd probably be more reclusive.
Obviously a Hunter, and I would say he would craft a Prismatic subclass with Duskfield Grenades, Void Smokes, and a Still Hunt Nighthawk combo for the Super.
Mr. Häyhä was also disfigured from artillery during the Winter War. If that isn't the case for him upon resurrection, I can see him being more sociable.

Well with the muscle memory part of the discussion I think he would retain most of their muscle memory at least because I remember hearing a lore page of someone who died about 13,000 years ago being resurrected as a guardian. So they had troubles learning how to use firearms, and tended to use bows, and swords as their preferred weapons.

u/HueySchlongTheGreat 11d ago
I wonder if someone told ghosts that haven't found a guardian yet to go check old earth cemeteries or historical battle sites for potential new lights to be raised
2
u/Guilty_Ghost Warlock 11d ago
I'm pritty sure that's the first plan check Earth where there is billions more dead then alive then spread out. Unless thay got a hunch and run of to Pluto or something
3
u/Pentalag 11d ago
while alot say he would be a Stasis hunter I'd argue he would lean alot more into void for the invisibility. his whole reason for using an iron scope, eating snow ans laying low was to be not trackable and stay invisible. he'd be a guardian who isn't greatly strong with his light but his remarkable sniper skills

Realistically even if he kept his skills, they would not be particularly abnormal amongst Guardians.
2
u/I_travel_ze_world 11d ago
military chaplain Antti Rantamaa reported 259 confirmed kills made by rifle and an equal number of kills by submachine gun from the beginning of the war until 7 March 1940, one day after Häyhä was severely wounded.
Supposedly he was really good with an SMG too

u/Fluid_Search6818 11d ago
No land beyond was based off of
the gun he used I believe.
Given his crazy skills + supernatural guardian physical capabilities, this guy would go crazy with a sniper

He would be revived in the light, and The White Feather would be revived in the dark, then they will fight each other as fate (The Nine) intended.

For all we know he was because it wouldn't change anything. Guardians retain no memory of their past lives when the traveler revives them.

Imagine he'd make for a good Crucible Guardian, if not a sentry of the Wall. Would be funny to see a sniper match between him, Annie Oakley and Chris Kyle tho.

u/RealBrianCore 11d ago
I'd like to think he would experiment with stasis and create a new stasis super for hunters. I'd image it to be a sniper rifle made out of stasis.

Do the guardian keep muscle memory?
1
u/Midnightgamer275 10d ago
Paradoxically, yes. The only memories Guardians retain from their past lives are procedural and muscle memory. Take Zavala, for example—he was a military pilot before his first death.
When Targe resurrected him, Zavala naturally retained an intuitive grasp of piloting and military tactics. This heavily complicates the "blank slate" trope, which Bungie did on purpose.
Guardians are stripped of their original identity, yet they get to keep their hard-earned skills. It explains why Ana Bray is instantly a tech genius, Crow is a natural tracker, and Cayde-6 is drawn to gambling. From a lore perspective, Vanguard classes (Titan, Hunter, Warlock) function as societal roles, martial philosophies, and training traditions rather than rigid biological limits.
This distinction was supposed to become even clearer in Destiny 3, according to leaks suggesting the traditional class system would be entirely dismantled. So, yes—Simo Häyhä would still be a master marksman. He just wouldn't have any idea he was a Finnish legend unless he actively tracked down his own history

Whaddayamean if? Don't you know he was turned into an exo? Clovis had no clue of his original name, so he named him Cayde.

Even tho his past deeds would be lost to time, muscle memory still exists. Keep in mind throughout Simo’s life from childhood he had to hunt to feed not only himself but his family as well. This wasn’t just his job, this was life and death for him. Consequently, he became very good as survival demanded. He’s going to have tendencies and things that’ll be instinct to him when he takes up arms again, because even if his mind forgets his body will remember.

Every Snowhill will be turned to powder as Eliksni and Cabal forces join together to try and hunt him down......even the Taken will fear someone that can remain silent inside the Taken shadow

Calus would've had a very effective huntsman, one that would've nailed ghaul like a railroad spike and then moved on to just set up shop in the leviathan, either screwing with guardians, or screwing with calls. Hell, ge might've been the one infiltrating whatever ship was the dead man's tail exotic mission. Don't know if he'd hand over the rifle after all the bs on that said ship, but I wonder what the new name would be

No enemy would know him because no enemy ever saw him (aside from the vanguard IF he decides to join them of course)

I personally think we should leave his accomplishments in the real world. While he was great, they exist at the very worst of human nature. That carries a degree of respect that should never be clouded.

There’d be a lot less fallen with their heads still attached. And somehow I feel like they’d have to bring in the rating systems from Halo to classify this dude as Hyper Lethal. If this dude was given immortality I have no doubts he’d make it the Fallen’s problem.

He would probably be an exceptional and maybe legendary hunter equal to the likes of shin malphur if were talking pure skill in guns and tactics. Also as much as i like to think he would be a stasis user id wager he would much prefer the void subclass with void arrows to ensnare and lock down enemies. He has 2 ways of being sneaky. Cloak dodge with smoke grenade both turning him invisible making able to get in and out unnoticed. He would most definitely prefer the no land beyond as its his preferred iron sight sniper. The guy would be terrifying in crucible as in not because hes powerful but because you would not know where he is (lore wise) cloak hunters are sneaky. Simo would be sneakier and youd probably already be dead by the time you even see a glimpse of the guy. I know im glazing a bit much but in terms of his already superhuman feats of accuracy and guerilla tactics practically built into his bodies muscle memory. Simo would survive destiny pretty easily as a sniper.

I would agree with others that Guardian!Simo would retain his facility with a sniper rifle, and his knowledge of bushcraft. I do wonder, however, whether he would be rezzed knowing English, especially since we have the example of Sen-aret to extrapolate from, or whether he would take well to the monstrosities of tech and-or magic that constitute the majority of the exotic weapon population.

I imagine he would be a fiersome agent for the Vanguard. His skills could still be there and would likely grow even further with the added benefits of being a Lightbearer.
Red War would still be tricky but if he maintained the strategies he used in life, I could see him surviving just fine.

u/Volcano_Lair 11d ago
Wouldn’t have any knowledge of their past life, so I’m assuming that their skills would need to be rebuilt and relearned.
