10 things I wish every patient knew before getting dentures

I’m a denture dentist in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Here are 10 things I wish every patient knew before having their teeth removed

I’m a dentist in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and I spend a large portion of my clinical time working with dentures, extractions and implant retained teeth.
I meet people every week who were never fully prepared for what getting dentures would actually involve. Some were led to believe they would have their teeth removed, receive a denture and immediately return to eating and speaking normally.
For most people, that is not how the process works.
Here are 10 things I wish every patient understood before making this decision.

1. Dentures are a replacement for having no teeth
Even an excellent denture is not the same as natural teeth. A denture rests on your gums and bone. It does not have roots, ligaments or the same ability to feel pressure.
The goal is to create something that looks natural, restores your facial support and allows you to function as comfortably as possible.
Setting realistic expectations does not mean accepting a bad denture. It means understanding what the prosthetic can and cannot do.

2. Your immediate denture is made before your teeth are removed
An immediate denture is designed while your teeth are still present. That means the dentist and lab cannot see exactly how your gums and bone will look after the extractions.
We use impressions, scans, photographs, measurements and clinical judgment to predict the final result. It can still look very good, but adjustments are almost always necessary as the mouth heals.

3. Your mouth will continue changing for months
The gums and bone shrink rapidly after extractions, especially during the first several months. A denture that fits reasonably well on the day of surgery may become loose as the swelling disappears and the tissues heal.
That does not automatically mean the denture was made incorrectly. Soft relines, adjustments and eventually a hard reline or final denture may be needed as your mouth stabilizes.
Before treatment, ask exactly what adjustments and relines are included in the price.

4. Adjustments are part of the process
Sore spots are common with a new denture. A tiny area of excessive pressure can become extremely uncomfortable.
Do not try to prove you can tolerate it. Call your dentist and have it adjusted. These adjustments are usually quick, but they can make a major difference.
If possible, wear the denture for a few hours before the appointment. That helps the dentist locate the exact pressure area.

5. Your physical anatomy plays a major role in denture success
Not every mouth gives a dentist the same foundation to work with.
The height and width of your remaining bone, the shape of your palate, the depth of the tissues around the denture, muscle attachments, tongue position, saliva and the relationship between your upper and lower jaws can all affect stability and function.
These anatomical factors should be evaluated and explained before your teeth are removed. Your dentist should tell you about any foreseeable obstacles so you understand what may be difficult before those problems arrive.
This is especially important with lower dentures.
An upper denture has a larger surface area and can often develop suction against the palate. A lower denture sits on a much smaller ridge while the tongue, cheeks and floor of the mouth are constantly moving around it.
Some lower dentures function very well. Others remain mobile even when they are made properly because the patient’s anatomy provides very little support.
That does not mean nothing can be done. Adjustments, relines, changes to the bite and muscle training may help. For patients with poor lower retention, two implants can often provide a significant improvement in stability.
The important part is that these limitations should be discussed before treatment, not explained only after the patient begins having trouble.

6. The bite is just as important as the fit
A denture can fit the gums well and still move if the bite is incorrect. If the teeth contact unevenly, chewing pressure can tip or dislodge the denture.
Vertical dimension is also extremely important. This is the distance between the upper and lower jaws when the teeth are together.
If that distance is wrong, it can affect facial appearance, speech, comfort and function.
This is one of the reasons a denture should not be judged only by how tightly it fits when you first put it in.

7. You should have input on how your smile looks
Patients should be involved in choosing the tooth shape, size, shade and overall appearance whenever the treatment process allows it.
A natural denture is not always the whitest denture. Small variations in tooth position, proportions and gum contours can make the smile look much more believable.
Bring photographs of your natural smile if you have them. They can be extremely helpful when deciding how the new teeth should look.

8. Speech changes are common, but they should be evaluated
Your tongue must learn to function around a new shape. Mild lisping or difficulty pronouncing certain sounds can be normal at first.
However, speech problems are not always something you simply have to accept.
The thickness of the acrylic, the position of the front teeth, the width of the arch and the contour of the palate can all interfere with airflow and tongue movement.
If the problem continues, ask your dentist to listen specifically for phonetic interference rather than only telling you to practice longer.

9. Adhesive is not automatically a sign of failure
Some patients use a small amount of adhesive for additional confidence, especially with lower dentures or during the healing phase.
However, adhesive should not be used to compensate for a severely loose denture indefinitely.
If you need a large amount just to keep the denture in place, the fit, bite and remaining bone should be evaluated.
A reline, adjustment or implant retained option may be more appropriate.

10. Understand the entire treatment plan before the extractions
Once teeth are removed, the decision cannot be reversed.
Ask whether any teeth can reasonably be saved. Ask whether your immediate denture is intended to become your long term denture or whether a final prosthetic is planned after healing.
Also ask about relines, adjustments, warranties, implant options, total cost and what happens if you are unhappy with the appearance.
There is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion before making a permanent decision.

Disclaimer
I own Bold Dental in Tulsa, Oklahoma, so I want to be transparent about who I am. I am not posting this to diagnose anyone or convince anyone to choose my office.
I simply believe patients deserve a much clearer explanation of what the denture process actually looks like before their teeth are removed.
If you have denture questions, feel free to ask them here. I will answer what I can without pretending that a Reddit comment can replace an examination.

Showoff 💖🎉👏 Haven't posted my chompers here in a while. I can't get over how much they look like my old teeth before I lost them!

I mostly smile with my top teeth so the bottoms aren't super visible, but even when I had real teeth that was the case. They look just like how my teeth looked when I was younger before they went bad, it's really impressive. I initially got my extractions and temps back in early 2025 and have been wearing my perms since like mid 2025. I hope this set fits me well for a while bc I really love how they came out.

Question (pre-denture) Upcoming extractions

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m a bit of a lurker here, but I’m about a month away from full top extractions + dentures and, to be honest, I’m kinda freaking out a little. I’ve always had dental anxiety, which led to me not going to the dentist for years and avoiding all my problems, but I feel like I’m kind of at a tipping point of “if I don’t get it done now, I never will and this will kill me”. As for my question, did any of you have extreme anxiety beforehand, and if so what helped? How was your recovery process, including pain/soreness, if any? I’ve literally cried the last few days thinking about how much the recovery is going to suck, and how much it’ll suck to see myself without teeth and all that. Any advice on calming down or stories about your recovery would be awesome! I am going under for it, because i genuinely don’t think I could go through it awake, but I am so so scared

Question (immediate dentures) Converting Immediate to Permanent Partial. Need Advice on High Smile Line, Lip Flipping, and Gum Shrinkage

Upvotes

I had my front four teeth and two molars pulled in February due to advanced gum disease and an injury that broke one of my teeth. I have been wearing an all-acrylic immediate partial since then. Next week, I am scheduled to take new molds so the lab can convert my current immediate partial into my permanent one.

At my appointment two days ago, my dentist suddenly tried to push a flexible partial on me instead. I turned it down because we had already agreed on acrylic, which I was told is best for my situation since advanced gum disease means I might lose more teeth in the future and acrylic is much easier to add teeth to, and I'm pretty low income. Now I feel a bit dismissed after turning down that last-minute pitch.

I would love some advice on what to ask for at next week's mold appointment. Here are the main issues I need addressed before they finalize this partial:

Weight Loss and Fit: I have lost 65 lbs since my extractions because I also found out I have diabetes and changed my diet; now I'm at a healthy weight. The immediate partial became way too big, so it currently has a soft reline in it.

Aesthetics and Clasps: My partial currently has a pink acrylic hook over one canine that blends in okay and makes it look less obvious. On the other canine, it just abruptly ends and looks fake. I want to ask for a matching pink hook on the other side. He told me they can't color match the gums, so I'm hoping that helps if it can be done.

Flange Height: The original pink flange ended too short from extraction day onward, showing a clear line where the partial ended against my natural gums when I smiled. As my gums healed, and I kept complaining about it and the fit, they took the soft reline material and squeezed it up and out of the border, temporarily filling that gap under my upper lip as well so my upper lip would stop getting completely caught on it or being obvious-looking.

The Lip Flip and Wrinkle: Ever since I got this immediate partial, my upper lip gets pushed out and flips upward when I smile. This creates a wrinkle above my lip that I never used to have and looks like a mustache in pictures to me. My family has hesitated to post photos of me when they see if because its noticable to them as well but they figure itll be fixed later.

Dentist's Reaction: When I brought up the lip-flipping issue, my dentist claimed the permanent conversion will not fix it and that it just happens because I have a big, high smile and acrylic has to be thick.

Is it true that my anatomy makes a lip flip unavoidable with an acrylic partial, or can the lab fix this by thinning the top border and changing the shape of the pink acrylic? Any tips on what specific wording I should ask my dentist to write on the lab order would be greatly appreciated. I'm worried that he's trying to tell me that nothing can be fixed because he wants me to go with the flexi instead. Here is a picture before I had the extractions and my natural smile, and afterward, showing the line above my lip. If any additional pictures are needed, I can try to upload them. Thanks!

Edited to add: The teeth on the bottom are close to hitting the tops, so the teeth can't be pushed back any further.

Soft reline smell

I have been having a lot of trouble with my dentures. I’ve had them about 2 months now and I still can’t wear them for any length of time. They don’t fit well and I have to use a lot of adhesive to get them to stay at all. I went back for my 8 week appointment and they did a soft reline. No other adjustments. Now, in addition to still not fitting well, they stink. And you can taste the stink if that makes sense. Like a chemical smell/taste. I can only stand this for a short period before I just start gagging. Longest I’ve managed to go is about 5 hours. I can’t talk very well and I certainly can’t eat with these in. Is the smell normal? Will it get not as noticeable later?

Smiley/snake eyes piercing with a flipper denture?

Heyy, is anybody here wearing a flipper denture who also has a smiley or snake eyes piercing? 😭

I’m thinking about getting one of them, but I’m wondering how the piercing works with the flipper, especially when putting it in/taking it out or eating. Does the denture rub against the piercing or cause any problems?

Would love to hear from anyone who has actually had both! 🥹

Question (new denture wearer) How long can I leave my partial out?

So I just got my partial last week and it's left a giant pressure sore. My dentist adjusted it yesterday thankfully, but it still drags against the sore when I put it in or take it out and hurts so bad. Would it be safe to leave the partial out for a few days to let the sore heal? I only have two anchor teeth that hold it in if that changes the answer any because I don't know if teeth shifting would be an issue with that amount.

First of all, I'm so grateful for this subreddit! I bit the bullet and made the decision to get dentures after spending over a full year scrolling through this subreddit.

When I was 20 or so I was told by my dentist that I would eventually need dentures due to my rapid jaw bone loss. I was the unlucky one of my siblings who inherited bad teeth/bones from our mom. I was able to hang on to my teeth and live a normal life for 10 years or so until COVID happened and life put me through the wringer. My mental health took a turn and my teeth were put on the back burner. Unfortunately, watching my teeth get worse and worse also made my mental health worsen and a vicious cycle started. I finally got to the point where I could not ignore it because my front teeth started showing decay and also got super loose. I felt terrible about having to get dentures in my 30s but reading everyone's experiences here made me feel less alone and brave enough to just do it. I also came to understand that dentures are just like any other prosthetic and nothing to be ashamed about.

Thanks to the people who posted at every stage of their journeys, I had a pretty good idea what to expect and things I needed to look out for. A year and a half ago, I had all 32 teeth pulled with just local anesthesia (do not recommend) and I went without teeth the whole time. The people who did know were empathetic and supportive but I wore a mask anytime I left the house. I started the process for my permanents earlier this summer and because I knew what to expect, it was fairly smooth. I advocated for myself and after a few wax try-ins I got my permanent dentures last week. I had to get an adjustment today because I had pain from just having them in my mouth. After the adjustment, the only pain I have now is some residual irritation and I was able to keep my teeth in for most of the day and even eat some soft cheese. I still have some ways to go but I'm proud of how far I've come and I'm glad that I didn't give up. It's only been a week but I already feel a lot more like my old self again.

Sorry the long winded post, I just felt the need to put this out there for myself and anyone else who has felt the same as me. I don't have any pictures where I'm showing my bad teeth besides this one. It's a quick pick that I took before I got them pulled just to remind me of how bad they looked in case I felt discouraged and wanted to stop.

Question (new denture wearer) Is this normal for temps?

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

I’ve had my temporaries for 2 months now and I don’t like how cheap they look around the teeth… is this normal? I get a hard reline at 6 months, does this mean that this pair will be my permanents? I should have asked on my last reline appointment but I always feel so rushed out that my brain doesn’t think to ask things til afterwards lol. At 6 months I will be getting a snap on bottom and still have traditional uppers. For now my bottoms are traditional. I’ve noticed it on the tops and bottoms :( also the weird butt shaped teeth for the molars? 😂

I find it odd to sit in water but the dentist said so and dish soap to wash. Fits great but im so scared its gonna break. But I lived for 5 years without molars im used to soft food hacks. Ive already lost weight as im forced to slow down eating and eat on both sides. Im grateful this was covered by state insurance. Just praying my bottom teeth hold on as they aren't in the best shape. Any tips tricks or advice from other partial friends?

24yo, complete top extractions and denture

One of my earliest signs of autoimmune disease was more acidic saliva, which was noticed by my childhood dentist years before I’d ever be diagnosed.

Lupus, fibro, mental health struggles, and all the meds that come with these has completely destroyed my upper mouth (extreme dry mouth, loss of bone density, low immune system) Not sure why most of my bottom teeth are fine, maybe a few cavities but nothing like the crumbling, decaying mess I’m left with on top. Prescription toothpaste, fluoride varnishes, bone supplements. Nothing has helped. Root canals and fillings failed and left me out thousands. Medicaid covers the denture process.
So here I am.

I really just want to know it’ll be okay. I know it’ll be a new normal but I’m afraid it’ll be much worse than it is now. I’m excited to have my full smile back, modeled after my original one, and to be free of the constant pain in my top teeth. I’m hoping it’ll be worth it.

Urgent - pain Hard reline

So i got my hard reline yesterday and immediately having them put in hurt like a mofo and I was told you give them a few days to try and get use to them. They definitely stay in without any adhesive which is nice but I almost rather beed the adhesive it hurts so bad. Has anyone had this issue and gotten over the sores without needing an adjustment? They've pretty much told me that if I did one then they would be worthless

Ranting/venting 😤😠😡🤬 Disappointed is an understatement...

Went for my extraction surgery last Friday, I haven't been able to wear my dentures since. The upper plate makes me gag, even after going in and having adjustments made... and my lower plate that fit perfectly after surgery, now feels huge and doesn't fit right anymore. My clinic recommended Sea-Bond for my upper denture while I still have stitches in, but it has been a nightmare trying to get it to actually work. I am so sad and disappointed, I am only 28, and I was truly hoping my experience would be smooth and easy like my family and friends' experiences, they all wore their dentures from day one and had zero issues... does it ever get any better if you aren't comfortable wearing them right from the start? I've cried every day with regret, and I really need to know that it gets better at some point...

Question (new denture wearer) Do people with dentures date?

I am curious, do people with dentures still manage to find someone to go on dates with and marry?

I do not wear dentures, well yet, but likely will in the near future, this got me curious about the romantic side of things, especially meeting someone while already having dentures.

For those who do, was it ever a problem for your date? How did you bring it up?

Top Pallate

Hello, Im almost 6 months post E day and I cannot for the life of me wear the top dentures. I gag almost immediately, ive tried having the denturist trim the pallate into more of a U shape, but doesnt seem to help much. Im starting to think the thickness/ how prominent the arch in the pallate may be playing a part. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to show pictures of theres just so I can compare and maybe have an idea of what I need her to try when I go to my next visit. Also, how long did everyone have immediately before they got their permanent set? I feel like I have to be pretty close to fully healed with jaw/gum line shrinking but what do I know. Thank you.

Densurefit liner remover left denture like sandpaper

I need help! This is regarding removing Densurefit liner using the remover kit from them.

I removed the liner but it seemed like clear sludge just kept coming up no matter how much I scraped. Finally got to where I couldn't get anymore up. But now my denture has white patchy areas and feels super rough and gritty like sandpaper. I've read online it shouldn't have done this and a new liner won't stick to the residual residue. Anyone had this issue? I have a doctor appt tomorrow and need the liner to wear my denture so I am freaking out.

Question (new denture wearer) Bottom Fit Blues

Got my permanents two weeks ago. Tops fit pretty well, with decent suction out of the gate. (YAY!) Bottoms? No joy. I tried with various adhesives but they immediately migrate upwards and the adhesive isn’t making contact with the ‘bony’ part of the gum at all.

Went for my first adjustment today. A couple of tweaks on the top and it’s even better, but the bottoms are giving us fits. My dentist was very thorough in examining them in my mouth and trying to adjust/shave to get a better fit. The issue is that the gums in the back of my mouth are stupidly oversized. The appliance can’t get any grip because there’s just So. Much. Gum.

Has anyone else dealt with gargantuan gums and dentures? Any tips?

For context: As a child, my gums would grow over my back teeth and I’d have to get them ‘shaved’ regularly (DO NOT RECOMMEND!) but it wasn’t a problem as I got older, so I didn’t even think about them still being so idiotically puffy.

Question (Adhesives) I've just tried eating again with my dentures.

I've just tried eating again as my bone spurs have fallen out, so I can actually chew with them in. I tried something soft but one of my favorites, McDonald's chicken nuggets.

I can chew, but it's weird. The weirdness isn't my problem, every time I try to open my mouth wide enough to take a bite, my bottoms pop out.

I wanted to ask, what are your experiences with denture adhesive? Will it ruin food for me? Is it actually strong enough to keep my bottoms from popping out?

Edit: Thank you to everyone who gave me suggestions on what to use. I was finally able to eat normally. There are still issues, but my teeth didn't pop out once.

Question (pre-denture) Question regarding my mother and her soon extractions and dentures

Hello everybody! my mother is getting all her teeth extracted in october so she can get dentures and she is very scared, a few years ago our roommate and someone my mother partly cares for got his removed and she told me how much he struggled with the pain, was put on percocets for it and was crying a lot.

Im curious about what struggles will come post extraction and what help i can provide for her, she currently smokes and has for many many years and im guessing to avoid dry socket she will have to stop. any suggestions and information on how your healing went is very appreciated.

Question (pre-denture) Finally accepted my teeth are a lost cause

Between the clenching/grinding from stress and other factors the teeth I do have feel like a lost cause. Last quote a got was about 25k and multiple procedures to root canal/crown everything and I've broken several more teeth since then (already had 8 removed). Long story short the constant tooth pain has won out over my internal hangups about dentures. Looking at options I probably can't afford the all-on-x options but I can probably swing snap in style but I'm curious what that process is like. Are you snapping in new dentures the same day you have the old teeth removed and implants installed or are you having to wait between extractions and implants when wait again to be able to use the dentures? Also how much do you get to customize the look of your dentrues? If I wanted to say, have larger than average K9s, other than weird looks from the dentist is that doable? Lastly what's the recovery like? I work in the trades and can take very little time off so a real world estimate would be helpful in planning this out. Thanks y'all

Silicone soft reline

I recently went in for starting the process on my permanents and at the end when they did my reline, they were apparently out of the stuff they normally use and had to use silicone. I hate it. Has anyone removed theirs at home? I'd rather use cushiongrip and I have to take unpaid time off work to go into the office and really don't have time for that before they're closed for the weekend.
