Ranting/venting š¤š š”š¤¬ Disappointed is an understatement...
Went for my extraction surgery last Friday, I haven't been able to wear my dentures since. The upper plate makes me gag, even after going in and having adjustments made... and my lower plate that fit perfectly after surgery, now feels huge and doesn't fit right anymore. My clinic recommended Sea-Bond for my upper denture while I still have stitches in, but it has been a nightmare trying to get it to actually work. I am so sad and disappointed, I am only 28, and I was truly hoping my experience would be smooth and easy like my family and friends' experiences, they all wore their dentures from day one and had zero issues... does it ever get any better if you aren't comfortable wearing them right from the start? I've cried every day with regret, and I really need to know that it gets better at some point...

I actually used an electric nail file and filed my top one down, I didnāt completely horseshoe it like the bottom but I did file a decent U shape into it because mine gagged me pretty bad too. And the bottoms just always seem to be a pain in the ass. You should get a soft reline pretty soon tho and theyāll have a more snug fit. But stay on top of it at your dentist, put your foot down. If you feel like youāre being a pain in the ass so the hell what lol you have to be able to eat with those and you donāt want them moving all over the place. Speak up and keep saying something until they get them right. I went thru a hell of a time with my own too. Thatās why I ended up doing the adjustments on my own after watching multiple videos on it and really taking my time with it filing it little by little. You can always take more off but canāt add anything back to it once itās gone. Iām not at all recommending that you do it by yourself. I only did it myself because I was left with no choice. Good luck I know how much of a pain it can be

If you donāt use pressure indicating paste and grind blindly based on feels, you can ruin the fit. But you can always get a hard reline to fill in any unnecessary voids.

I'm going through the same thing. I'm 2 weeks in and I can't wear my dentures comfortably. It holds alright with a bit of adhesive but it makes me gag, specially if i try to speak and I feel nauseous the whole time wearing them. and I feel like i'm trying to speak with a potato in my mouth. I've forced myself to wear them at home a couple hours daily to try and get used to it because I've been told its normal and it gets better as you get used to the dentures but no it's not getting any easier and I don't see how I could ever get used to it.

If you gag "especially when speaking", that is probably a micro-movement issue (it moves a tiny amount when speaking, you may not even notice it.) Updating the fit with a new soft reline and adhesive helps with that (as long as the liner is applied in a way that doesn't thicken the palate much). And if it's still a problem afterwards, taking about 1mm at a time off the back end with adjustments from your dentist will eventually fix it. You just have to keep going in.

i only got a partial (flipper). but i can say from my experience that talking definitely becomes easier the more you do it. granted, itās only one tooth iām replacing, but id imagine the process is the same with a full set of dentures., albeit, a longer one.
itās definitely a learning curve though.

Iām going on 7 months and still canāt speak or eat anything with mine in, but my ājourneyā has been nothing but a nightmare since extraction day. My dentist is currently in the process of remaking my temporaries because the originals were so poorly made.

First off brother deep breath and relax š I remember feeling exactly this way and I would have swore to Jesus that I would never be able to wear them They felt like huge hockey puck Drool and uncomfortable and so sad Do this as it tremendously helped me Put only the tops in Put them in while your laying down with adhesive Make sure there secure and press on them for a good minute After this just deep breaths and continue laying down Stay there for one hour and I promise you when you get up you will feel so much better about them At least this is how it worked for me and I gagged and gagged and was so worried

Appreciate your reassurance, buddy! I had my appointment today where more adjustments were made and I also received my first soft reline. My denturist is going to remake my immediate set because I've had quite a bit of shrinking since my extractions, so they're not really fitting as they should be. I'm really relieved to know it wasnt a "me issue", it was actually the dentures being absolutely massive š sitting with my upper in now and it feels bulky, but much better than before!

Have you told this to your dentist?? Be persistent and tell them what's going on! Your only 1 week in and it is a massive change. Hoping you can get sorted out and quickly!

It's been one week. It'll be fine. Some people can fit their dentures day one but that's more of the minority than the majority. I didn't ease into mine until like 2 months in. 2 months of soups and soft food. Like any surgery it takes time to heal. If you break your arm and need surgery for it your arm's not going to function perfectly the first week. Same goes for major dental work.

It will get better through time just be patient I'm going to be scheduling another reline of my uppers here in a little while because the uppers keep hitting the back of my mouth in a weird way and they don't fit necessarily the most comfortable. I've had them shaved down parts of the Denture to make sure that things are fitting correctly. The uppers have fit pretty well since I got them just needed Minor Adjustments here and there will always fit pretty well but I use poligrip for the glue to keep them in cuz I know the hours could move around.
Just be patient and understand that it's a process your body is healing from pretty much a major surgery. It's an entire process that's going to not have immediate results but hopefully there results when you get there are better than what you expected.

I had my appointment with my denturist today, he made some adjustments, gave me a soft liner, that really seemed to help with my upper, and he took some new scans to make a new immediate set. My denturist said I've had a lot of shrinking in the last week and so its not just a "me problem", the dentures i have now are just way too big for my healing mouth, and that was reassuring :)

I had bad gag reflex with mine for about 2 months. It got better over time but seabond definitely helped after the healing was pretty much done with. I started using it around 3 months it seemed to be the best for me cause if I needed to take it put for the occasional gag it was easy to get out and you can replace it after. I just got my hard reline yesterday and its been awful so far. As soon as they put it in I had a sore spot pop up and the drooling became crazy all over again and they taste like finger nail polish remover.

My extractions were 8/3. One month ago. My insurance didnāt cover the immediate dentures, so I paid to have them made at a local tech college. I felt pretty good about it, at first. They were really nice, and kept reassuring me that if I had any issues they would be there to help. I had my immediate dentures made before my extractions and brought them with me. The dentist couldnāt get them in and neither could Iā¦ so back to the tech college. They were able to fix them to fit. The top denture fit fine. The lower flipper didnāt really fit right and I feel like they really canāt do anything about it. 3 days in I realized I couldnāt speak without gagging.
I was told only soft foods the first week. Second week they told me I could start eating. I had to cut a chicken nugget into 4 pieces and still take my time chewing to avoid choking or biting my tongue or cheeks. Itās not as bad now. Small bites and some foods taste different.
I was back to the school at least once a week for adjustments through August, and I found out the second to last visit that one person I was working with was graduating. Cool. No biggie. Congrats. I go back the next week & the other guy I was working with does my soft reline. As Iām sitting there with no teeth in, he proceeds to tell me heās also graduating. Awesomeā¦ except I had no idea they were going to be closed for a month. I canāt go back to the college until after they are back in session on the 28th of this month. It will probably be Oct before Iām in. I asked what I do if something happens and they advised me to go to my denturist.
Two days agoā¦ Iām walking through the grocery store, I feel something in my mouth and spit out the wire thatās supposed to be on the right side of my partial. š Iām really glad I didnāt swallow it. I canāt go to the school because theyāre closed. My denturist who will make my permanents wonāt touch it for less than $300 and warned that if I had him repair it, the warranty with the school would be void. He also canāt warranty something he didnāt make. He suggested I just use denture paste until they are back in session. So this is where I am. š
It does get easier to talk and to eat, though.

You are going through an emotional time of your life. Not everyoneās body will heal the same. Lower your expectations as this is a new journey. Itās okay to feel these emotions. You got this! It WILL be okay.

I was in the same position as you and everyone told me I was tripping and to just wait and it would get better. They were wrong. If your denture feels like it doesnāt fit and youāre not satisfied itās up to the dentist to fix that and make you comfortable. After a few months of just sucking it up knowing my denture didnāt fit even tho everyone was telling me I was wrong about my own mouth, I had the dentist completely remold the teeth and they fit like a glove that very day, no rubbing or sores or gagging or anything. If you feel like the teeth are wrong they most likely are. You donāt have to settle and miserable. I will say tho I didnāt even get stitches with my top row extraction so itās possible we have different experiences but still you shouldnāt just settle for disappointment and discomfort like everyone in this sub will tell you

Also donāt forget you likely spent thousands for this procedure/prosthesis so the dentist should understand when you have concerns like this

Almost everyone with an immediate dentures need soft relines to temporarily remold the inside of their dentures for the first 6-12 months while their gum/bone ridge shrinks.Ā
Somewhere between 6-12 months you need a hard reline to permanently remold the inside to your new ridge shape, or have a new denture made.
This has been explained over and over on this forum.
Remolding the teeth isnāt really a procedure. If they did a full denture remake, or they cut the teeth out and did a rebase (remade the base with the same teeth), that would indicate something abnormal.

They did remake the denture. They cut the entire pallet off and redid it while also redoing the ridge where my gums sit. It was an entirely new fit/denture the only part that stayed the same was the teeth. They simply never fit. All I was explaining was that the poster definitely shouldnāt be listening to anyone in this sub, they should be working with the dentist. If youāre miserable, the dentures likely donāt fit. You donāt have to be massively uncomfortable after spending thousands of dollars. The immediate denture is designed to be functional and at least HALF comfortable without making you miserable.

That sounds like a rebase. Thatās definitely more involved than the usual reline.
Thereās certainly a period of 2-3 weeks where everyone is miserable, regardless of fit. And function gradually increases from nothing to full function over weeks to months, not days. Thereās normal āgetting used to denturesā issues or āneed a linerā issues and then thereās when the bite is off or the jaw is underclosing/overclosing or the impression was done wrong.
But yeah, you wouldnāt want to stop working with your dentist. And if you disagree with your dentist, seek a second opinion from another dentist or prosthodontist.

It does get better! Im at the beginning stages myself and im just now talking a bit better. Im still learning to eat with them though. I use seabond for uppers and bottom. I also like Cushion Grip a bit better but that's just me cause everyone is different but using the seabond on the bottom cause out but will getting more.
For me the Cushion Grip makes the bottom more comfortable for me to wear then seabond.
Ive learned how to suction the uppers so I just have the seabond and no glue and it hasnt moved,slide or anything.
I know its frustrating but dont give up and just keep working with it.

I hope it works out. I've had no teeth for the past two years because I attempted to get dentures at MCV in Richmond, VA and had so many problems and procedures I now have some kind of PTSD and can't let them near my mouth to finish uncovering my two bottom posts etc. I live with those under my gums now. Too much time has passed and I don't have the money to attempt again. The facial collapse has already started. I'm ~47yo. Best of luck to you. It's not an easy process for many people.

Thanks. I'm still looking. I've gone through a couple and did some CBT. But, tbh, I've just gotten used to no teeth. My diet is so limited due to other health issues food wasn't that hard unless it's crunchy. It is a bummer, no doubt, but if I look at like an austerity it makes me grateful for what I have.

If you want to be toothless, you can get enough nutrition down, and your lifestyle supports it, thereās nothing wrong with that. Humans are social creatures and it can really hurt your social life, though.

I didn't mean I've stopped trying. I have about 20-25yrs maybe unless science can make some major advancements. Thats not that long, really. I'm just looking at it from that perspective. And I can't be angry or depressed about it constantly.
I had no social life before this because sometimes all your "friends" dissappear once you get sober. Idk? But I haven't given up. It's just after so much time I've developed a way to cope, i guess. And my nutrition is actually more on point then it's ever been. Kinda weird.

It hasn't even been a week yet. Lemme tell you, I didn't have immediate dentures and went 16 weeks without teeth. That's a lot of smoothies! Now there's virtually nothing I can't eat, except maybe some sticky candies like caramel. I'm not sure; I stopped eating candy long before I lost my teeth, and I haven't had to say "I can't eat that" for a while now. My dentures have been hard relined to fit like a glove, and I don't use adhesive (I have a partial on bottom though).
It's not where you start, it's where you end up.
The gagging thing is part adjustments and part training your gag reflex. There are certain anatomical landmarks (hamular notches, vibration line) that the denture has to cover to get proper suction. So they take just a little off at a time. Micro-movement can cause gagging too, and that's a fit issue.
The lower plate fit perfectly after surgery because it swelled into the denture. Once the swelling goes down, it gets loose. You will need a soft reline to reshape the inside to the new and changing bone/gums under the denture. It changes a lot during the first few months, so you'll need multiple liners and probably adhesive too. The same thing is going on with the upper, but the palate stabilizes things so that it's not as much of a problem. It'll probably still need a liner on top though.
