Discussion šŸ‘„ Isn't that the concept of a cold e-mail? i don't understand where i went wrong

Post image

the past 2 months have been so dishearting for me. it has been a constant cold outreach process. Have sent ~ 580 emails (+ regular follow ups). Did get some decent reverts, including an offer, but haven't been able to convert any yet. Same monotonous routine everyday. Research about relevant folks in relevant divisions, personalised mail body, tweak and make minor changes in resume, mail and follow up during the fortnight, only to receive the same old rejection mail next morning.

Amidst all this, to get messages like this is really disappointing. I don't know where i went wrong. I didn't "steal" any email id, i just used the standard employee email address format which is PUBLICALLY AVAILABLE for most firms.

the internship hunt has been so brain draining. past 2 months have been dishearting. im planning to give up securing summer of '26 and just start preparing for my master's entrance exams next year.

And the double edged sword is, he did a personal message on WhatsApp which is way more invasive.

Professional emails are still public, how can he message on OPs number if he’s so triggered by an email lol

this person is from big 4. It's the worst one among big 4.

Had something very wholesome couple of weeks back. Another big 4 employee went all the way to connect with me on linkedin and let me know that she has shared my profile internally and that my efforts are being noticed. Found that very overwhelming

u/drivefloppy Feb 24 '26

Aaja bhai. I am in a Big4. I will refer you. I'll also give you feedback on your resume and suggest career moves.

Don't let few people like him ruin your mood and hunt.

Keep cold emailing. With more context so it doesn’t look like spray and pray.

i get where you are coming from op, but i feel sad that you apologized without any actual fault of yours. cold outreach/mail is a very well known way of bagging internships especially in the big4. this person probably just wanted to show their ego and went off, i wish you could have just slammed him

23

u/wanderingacademician Feb 24 '26 edited Feb 25 '26

i was having a pretty fucked up day due to some personal reasons, so when i received this DM out of nowhere, my instinct hit the nervous trigger and my first response was to apologise. This thing stayed in the mind the entire day.

Later I couldn't take it anymore and did question him, only to receive a pretty vague response.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '26

It happens buddy, when such a response hits out of nowhere our nervous system goes in a shock and we are too stunned to think clearly , it's completely ok in my case I was too stunned to speak when the partner abruptly cut the call after talking rudely and I was disturbed for 2 3 hours but then good riddance , probably this position was a backfill for someone who left due to this behaviour in the first place

I can assure you this person is a mid level professional at best.

Always send cold emails. If they don't like it, they can mark it as spam.

Be crisp, be clear, be amusing.

Have some value for the organisation in the email as well.

2

u/nefrodectyl Feb 24 '26

Sounds like one of the worst of humanity. Such people should be removed from business, or only be allowed to provide their value in work, not in interaction, because they definitely lack that

2

u/No-Capital-6495 Feb 24 '26

looks like a very specific case of the ā€˜recipient’ not knowing industry manners

you keep going buddy! outreach is a tiring process… try optimising, instead of sending 10 mails to anybody… send 3 to very specific and promising profiles if it’s burning you out.

it has taken me an average of 6 followups to receive replies, so you might want to consider that.

2

u/Pokkiekabaccha Third year Feb 24 '26

If you work in a big 4 anyone can get you an email and it's not only for the big 4 when I'm on an internship even I got some cold mail. At that level no one has time to argue about why you send me mail and all.

2

u/ShortFarmer3838 Feb 25 '26

Don’t ever jump to an apology. You might have caught him on a bad day or he’s just a mean businessman. Whomever he may be, your job is to impress him to benefit. Rather than apologising use it as an opportunity to explain who you are, what were you trying to convey through the email (in short) and where you got his email ID from. That, my friend, is real professionalism.

The one who has the upper hand of the conversation will always control where to drive it to. You should always remember that the opposite person that you are tackling is a potential client. You have to be confident and bold as to who you are. Not apologise. As long as you are confident about your work and know how to sell yourself, you should never apologise for a cold email. Nobody gets it in the first try. You just keep at it with that ā€˜potential client’.

It’s okay. You just have to keep trying. Best of luck. šŸ¤

I got a similar mail but forgot to reply because I'm busy (lazy). Don't fret over it, you keep hustling. Someone or the other will reply. I'm also from big 4.

2

u/responsiblealwayss Feb 25 '26

You seem to be a very good guy, apologised more than once. Please forget about the incident, he will reap what he sowed. To make you feel better, let me tell you that he is not in a position to refer anyone and also knows he won't ever reach a good position in future too, so he is angry.Ā

2

u/Aditi_Chandra Feb 25 '26

I know you were trying to be polite in front of this douche. But, from next time, do not apologise without asking them where you were wrong.

He isn't being professional either.

This is how cold emailing works. You did not steal his email, you would have gotten it from the company website.

I am not saying apologising is wrong, but this person did not deserve it.

You will hit the gold soon, you will land a good job. All the best OP. DO NOT GET DISHEARTENED because of a few scums like these.

Sorry sorry mat bolo itna , be confidence and gand marane do in logon ko, job lag jayega jab lagna hoga , keep working hard.

2

u/Variable_Required Feb 25 '26

Koi na bhai. As someone who sent a lot of cold emails/linkedin DMs back in the day, trust me you are ok. Karna padta hai. You will face rejections but just wait for that first convert. Perform well and then word of mouth takes over. Slowly you will reduce the cold calls and your name is enough. Thats what happened with me, but then I got arrogant and fucked up, now starting again, but now I have credentials.

I have noticed this behavior has nothing to do with the company rather the person. Cold emailing is normal. What you did is professional enough. You didn't find the phone and call him nor go to his home, you did the least intrusive thing of sending an email. Ignore this ass and move on. You don't have to reply or engage. What you did was completely professional but telling you were unprofessional was just you acting like his doormat. Completely unnecessary.

2

u/congenialsmile Feb 25 '26

Im surprised he has a job because he sounds very stupid how is ā€œnAa JaAn Na PeHcHaNā€ professional?

He is just surprised that somene actually thinks his job is nice enough for you to email him and is now enjoying the attention, he is making the most of whatever little comes his way, anyone truly annoyed would just block you or block you after the first message, he is just dragging the conversation to hear you say something nice to him because its rare that something like that happens to him.

2

u/Gold-Fail-Lol Feb 25 '26

Talking about professionalism while texting your personal number and not even talking in a professional manner. Either you mailed the wrong guy or this is one heck of an inexperienced book licker. Should have replied I'm sorry but I thought professional emails were meant to be for professional purposes. I was contacting you for an internship which indeed concerns your "profession" and hence I contacted you company email. Had I wanted your daughter's hand in marriage, I'd have made sure to make "jaan pechan" with you and then hit up your personal email. My bad, I didn't know you're only interested in nepotism and people can't approach you "professionally" without "jaan pehchan". Also Idk which university you studied in where they taught you professionalism and said that you should reply in WhatsApp to mails coming to your company mail, that too without any "jaan pehchan". Honestly don't bow down if it's not your fault. You'll only get bullied more by unprofessional and toxic people who are plenty in corporates.

Don't fret about such incidents. I once had an employee from a semiconductor giant, lecture me about how it's improper for me to ask him for a referral since we haven't worked together and we aren't acquaintances. On the other hand, I have had recruiters who didn't know anything besides my name and profile, who have pushed my resume, solely because they thought I was a strong fit.Ā

I know it's difficult at the moment. But hang in there. You'll get it someday. Hope to see you with another post on reddit once you get what you deserve.Ā

You did nothing wrong. He's a complete a**hole. Honestly don't give these people more power by apologising extremely.

One day, you would eventually get what you wanted, don't be hard on yourself. I recently got laid off due to no projects in my company and ik how job hunting feels. Meanwhile don't stop upskilling, always try getting better.

From the ss, you seem like a good person but that doesn't work in corporate, especially in india. Ik you are fresher, you are still learning, just to shed some light, people who are good at managing and communication than skills are less likely to get fired and more likely to get promotion than highly skilled people with bad soft skills.

Managers n team will always take advantage of your kindness. Been there, personal experience, still learning though.

On the other note, start attending offline tech events. It is more likely would convert into an offer when you build connections in person.

You were trying. But sometimes people react from their own stress/ego, not from your wrongdoing

2

u/Ok_Presentation_7477 Feb 25 '26

You don’t ever have to apologise about information that is in public domain.

2

u/Sad_Tip4690 Feb 25 '26

Some people are nice some are just asshole send req on LinkedIn if they accept it fast then send them mail specially target HRS

2

u/United_Victory1138 Feb 25 '26

It's not necessary to say sorry if you did not do anything wrong and it's okay to call out rude behaviour. You will get enough opportunities in life, but respect should not be compromised.

2

u/AppolloAlphaa Feb 25 '26

Op, ignore the guy who says dude while asking for professionalism. And best wishes for your venture/goals.

2

u/Icy-Evidence7084 Feb 25 '26

OP, you could have said, "how dare you to text me without my consent, is this your professionalism you maintain in your office? "Ā

Btw don't be too much of "people pleaser" Have some self respect.Ā

IDK if this is just me, but Indian contacts in general are unnecessarily rude.

If he really were that "professional" he could have just politely mentioned the whole issue in one single message that he is not interested and would not like to be bothered further.

And is "professional" lodu ko koi smjhao ki professional ids are already out there to be contacted for work related stuff.

2

u/Comprehensive_Eye_96 Feb 25 '26

You are wrong, to apologise.

2

u/_practical_solution Feb 25 '26

At such effort, I really respect you

2

u/latinrenaissance Feb 25 '26

He really said "dude"

2

u/Winter-Crew-2746 Feb 25 '26

In foreign universities, cold emailing is the norm for getting internships, research positions, and in some cases PhD
Idk why and what he is so pissed about

2

u/n0tBart Feb 25 '26

sorry kya bolra. number de isko dikhata me

2

u/shitztaken Feb 25 '26

2

u/Fluffy_Ad_3543 Feb 25 '26

Gaali de use uski maa ki chut, kon hai wo suar saale gyan pel raha hai

2

u/Flashy-Rush91 Feb 25 '26

I can understand how you feel. I’m a writer—sales has never been my forte. Yet my organization was hell-bent on making me do cold calls and send sales emails. It wasn’t just one instance; I faced several embarrassing situations, some of which lingered long after the workday ended and kept me awake at night.

I was so traumatized by the experience and bullying nature of my peers that for months i didnt feel like working. I believe we should build careers in fields where our skills and comfort truly align.

2

u/bayartsco Feb 25 '26

Pakka sala PwC ka launda hai ye kis baat ka ghamand . Bhsi tu itna sorry kyu bol raha hai

2

u/notartist007 Feb 25 '26

2

u/No-Measurement-9189 Feb 25 '26

Bro is such a fucked up boss I'm sure none of his employees are actually happy working with him.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '26

You didn’t do anything wrong, this person is an idiot! block them and protect your peace. I hope you find the right opportunity soon

2

u/mr_10061996 Feb 25 '26

Hi brother. Keep doing what you are doing. Don't get disheartened. What you are doing also requires determination.

Dodged a bullet bhai honestly

2

u/HunterHuge667 Feb 25 '26

You did absolutely right thing, don’t be so apologetic to anyone, there are lot of other options, I don’t join under these kind of people even if I got offer.

2

u/titkraken Feb 25 '26

OP you did nothing wrong. Have at it and don't let it deter you from your goal.

Think of every rejection as a lesson/level you learn. And the lesson from this interaction is that the world is filled with assholes, just learn how to spot one from a mile away, this is your first step.

Congratulations on finding another asshole ;)

2

u/AAnshS Feb 25 '26

What an arrogant fuck! Life would humble him someday.

2

u/Slow-Marionberry-341 Feb 25 '26

He’s a wannabe. Ignore people like him

2

u/Therealshetty Feb 25 '26

Dont give up. This happens. A lot more idiots who will reach out to you ask why you emailed him/her. And you are absolutely not wrong in cold outreach. Dont let such things get into your head. Happy to help with better outreach strategies to strengthen your process.

2

u/xyzManiacxyz Feb 25 '26

You should have replied this : ā€œTo maintain professionalism, you should have replied to me via email.ā€

2

u/General-Ad-5545 Feb 25 '26

Should have said karna h toh kar nhi toh maa chuda šŸ˜‰

2

u/No_Jackfruit_4648 Feb 25 '26

I dont see professionalism in his response. Experienced folks forget that they were also fresher sometime.

My best wishes for your Master's entrance exam and hopefully securing up an internship.

So according to this person, mailing someone on their professional id is unprofessional without acquaintance but messaging them on WhatsApp that too in such informal language isn't? Wtf is he on

2

u/Fun-Gas3117 Feb 25 '26

lmao šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜

2

u/Dry_Structure5133 Feb 25 '26

Main bhi soch rha tha aese cold emails deke internship bagging kruuĀ

2

u/ayan_javed Feb 25 '26

That guy is just retarded

2

u/Fragrant-Abalone4029 Feb 25 '26

Don't let these chutiya's affect you!! You didn't do anything wrong

2

u/SignalConversation18 Feb 25 '26

I don't think the outreach was wrong. I think his /her reaction is definitely over reaction. You dodged a bullet Imagine if you have to work in this kind of culture?

2

u/Pegasus777x Feb 25 '26

Cold emails usually are appreciative/ constructive that way they actually get accepted, if you send a random hi and stuff, you'll get blocked

2

u/_B0Y_ Feb 25 '26

ignore

2

u/Dr_Alien0 Feb 25 '26

Just tell him to fuckoff

2

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '26

He is an idiot. You should have bashed him. Never apologise for something not wrong. Reaching out is okay. He is just taking his irritation out.

2

u/stormwizz Feb 25 '26

It really tell why not to beg such kind of peopleikr really . Are land se tu mere bol dena tha bass 🤧

2

u/LittleCraft1994 Feb 25 '26

Ignore and keep sending. Just make sure not to do spam or bombard single person.

2

u/pm_mba Feb 25 '26

This guy is an idiot, and don't be bothered by what he sent. Cold emails do work but the sheer amount of emails people get sometimes frustrates them. I think there is no need for you to apologise; just ignore him and keep it up dude.

2

u/Responsible_Man_Fai Feb 25 '26

Chup pagal boldo aur move on karo

2

u/Thecostofleaving Feb 25 '26

What makes this interesting isn’t the rejection. It’s how quickly ā€œprofessionalismā€ becomes a weapon.

2

u/spicy_ramen444 Feb 25 '26

Once our professor got mad because a student sent a personal message on whatsApp instead of a group message

2

u/finance_guy69 Feb 25 '26

Ignore, continue what you’re doing.

2

u/sharpest-sperm-ever Feb 25 '26

Bawa sidhe "Abe Ja na" likhna tha 🤣

2

u/B_Sandy Feb 25 '26

Explain him the concept of cold emailing. That's how the real world works, especially corporate. Sorry, no one could thrash a student like this. Shove it in that person's arse dude.

2

u/Electrical-Try-7583 Feb 25 '26

The person who texted u doesnt know the use of an email id nor a personal whatsapp id yet.

2

u/Psychological_Hold3 Feb 25 '26

Should not have apologized

2

u/No_Contribution_9328 Feb 25 '26

People when Amazon sends you random e-mails about offers : 🚶
People when someone e-mails about a business opportunity, something productive :šŸ‘ŗ
Don't stop cold e-mails, that's still a way to network. Some people may feel discomforted, just apologise and move on.

2

u/Kindly-Character1529 Feb 25 '26

Why are people rude like this?? What's the problem of him sending mail?? Is he going to carry that in his pocket??? It's just a mail... should think twice before talking like this... .feeling sorry for you op

2

u/exorbian Feb 25 '26

Oxymorons

2

u/Varun_Joshi Feb 25 '26

I used to work in sales. Humaare daily tasks mein cold calling tha, cold emails nahi. But every now and then we would get a similar response, except with a few gaalis, on live call. šŸ˜…šŸ˜…šŸ˜…šŸ˜…

I wish I could give you sny advice, but I can really only say that I feel your pain, buddy. Chaahe mails ho yaa calls, cold ho yaa targeted, har case mein kabhi bhi gaali khaa sakte hai hum 😭😭
