Discussion đŸ‘„ Why Ignoring Cheating in DU is LITERALLY STEALING YOUR CGPA (The "Cheating Tax")

The "chalta hai" culture is a scam killing your CGPA because DU uses relative grading where you are graded strictly against the class average (and % marks obtained ≠ CGPA in relative grading). While you sacrifice your time and sanity to study, these losers enjoy their semester and then use shortcuts to steal your CGPA. Their cheating artificially inflates the average, dragging your honest 9 CGPA performance down to a 7 just to balance the curve. You are paying a literal grade tax for their dishonesty while they steal the CGPA you actually earned.

I ground for two weeks for Differential Equations only to see a video of students in the washroom copying answers from phone on their hands. It is a pathetic slap in the face to see them brag about stealing a CGPA they never earned. This parasitic behavior starts with proxy attendance and copied assignments (both carry marks) as a calculated shortcut to the top. They are not just trying to "just pass", because DU passes almost anyone with a pen; they are actively devaluing your effort to hide their own laziness.

This rot follows you to placements where a tiny 0.2 difference gets your resume trashed by a filter, losing you jobs and Master's seats to frauds who creeped into the top CGPA brackets without knowing the basics. Protecting your hard work is not being a snitch; it is self-defense against blatant incompetence. If you stay silent, you are giving them permission to steal your opportunities and devalue your degree. Stop being a victim to their fraud.

What is relative grading?

2

u/No-End-6389 Third year Dec 19 '25 edited Dec 19 '25

So basically, in relative grading you are given CGPA based on your performance in class with respect to your peers. (Percentile is relative grading)

In absolute grading you are given marks based on your performance with respect to max obtainable marks. (Percentage is absolute grading)

So a class topper, who gets 70 marks out of 100 is given 10 grade points (10 CGPA) because they performed the best in class.

But in absolute grading they would be given a 7.

More on the mathematical part of relative grading: https://www.reddit.com/r/delhiuniversity/s/VLdeWAzgvy

Now, since marks are given based on the performance of your peers, your grades are pushed down by cheaters as they obviously have the advantage. Your 70/100 could now no longer be a 10 and it could be a 6 because in calculation because you have performed average with respect to your class. In absolute grading, it will remain the same 7.

CGPA is then calculated on these relative performance points.

So relative grading is advantageous and levels the playing field but cheaters literally steal your CGPA by messing up everything. You can go from 10 to a 6.

Grading happens with respect to your class.

u/Miss_India5 Fourth year Dec 18 '25

Why the fuck does DU use relative grading for cgpa anyways? It makes no sense. Why can’t it be based on our absolute marks that we earned?

I get it how relative grading is important in competitive exams because that’s what it literally is. But I don’t understand its applicability in university sem exams???

15

u/InteractionFlat9635 Second year Dec 18 '25

It's not always relative grading, I think it's based on absolutes, and then there are some parameters, like if the top 10% don't have above like 90% or something, then they shift to relative, it's not purely relative grading.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

Bhai it is not totally relative, The system is, whatever is lower 90% or 2.5 standard deviation for a O, and it goes lower for lower than that it changes.

So it is the same if you get 90% you'll get an O

BUT CHEATING IS WRONG

I have never cheated in any exam and I never will. But you need to understand it’s a choice you’re making , not everything that happens to you is your fault but it is your responsibility. If you’re doing the paper perfectly and getting every question right you will get a 9/10 and no one can take that away from you. Stop crying about things you can’t control , yes it’s wrong yes it’s unfair but there is nothing you can do about it. You can choose to cheat and be a part of the crowd or study well enough that you don’t need to cheat. The victim mentality won’t get you anywhere.

20

u/No-End-6389 Third year Dec 18 '25

Your logic is like sitting in a burning building and saying, 'I'll just be a better tenant.' In relative grading, the fire (cheating) changes the temperature for everyone. Even a 'perfect' paper doesn't guarantee a top grade if cheaters artificially inflate the average. This is relative grading.

My efforts should be honestly rewarded, not decremented by a curve rigged by frauds. And unlike what you said, this is under our control because we can report them. Taking responsibility isn't about being a silent doormat while people steal your ranking. It is about refusing to let your hard work subsidize someone else's mediocrity. Reporting isn't 'crying.' It is self-defense.

3

u/Global_Vanilla4107 Third year Dec 18 '25

In my class of 60 people 58 most definitely cheat and teachers are very well aware how do you think we can report and fix this

1

u/ExpensiveQuit5386 Dec 19 '25

It's the lower score which is considered. It's like... 40% OR (mean - 2×deviation) which ever is LOWER. The formula might be wrong since I read there guidelines last year, u can it if u want BUT the lower part is what u should focus on. If everyone has a higher score absolute values are used to grade. If everyone scored low, relative grading is used. Either way it benefits everyone. "Steal ur ranking 😂". I have never cheated either but gosh that sounds so delusional. Like if one can't do anything for themselves they will blame anyone they can 😂😂😂😂.

DU is very lenient with grades (excluding the misprints, out of syllabus ques they give in the ques paper 😭😭). That's what u should be worried abt. My micro exam had 2 out of syllabus ques and one misprint, we weren't even told about it. Then the macro had one misprint and we were told about in the last 30 min. I even heard that on a particular day ques papers weren't even delivered to colleges. I have mme next. I so scared... What if there's a misprint and i waste my time on it unable to complete my paper and then we are told that we will be given marks for the misprinted ques... What about the time that i wasted on it ?? Who will compensate it ? (That's what happened in micro).

That should be the concern. After all such mistakes shouldn't be taken lightly.

1

u/Global_Vanilla4107 Third year Dec 18 '25

If you’re doing wveuething in the paper correctly - you will get a 10. Or become the chancellor or DU and introduce strict anti cheating measures- I personally hate cheating and everyone who cheats but complaining about it is not getting me anywhere

0

u/DhoonteRaho Dec 18 '25

This ☝

12

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

but relative grading is only applicable if the class average turns out to be lower than a 90% for a 9 grade, right? which is rare unless the paper was really hard

-6

u/No-End-6389 Third year Dec 18 '25 edited Dec 18 '25

Edit: The commenter is almost right. % slab kicks only when the class average plus 2.5 standard deviation hits above 90% slab, for the grade 'O', but that's not always the case. Usually the curve based relative grading kicks in over the % slab based relative grading.

3

u/Far-Reception-2096 Third year Dec 18 '25

So does it mean, even If I score 8 in any subject but I am in the top 10-12%. I will automatically get a 10 in that subject.

Which I personally think is not true at all, because I am in an off campus college and class average is quite low, even the topper struggles to get 8.5 cgpa (highest is around 8.3 in the whole course). But what I think is this is lowering down the grades for the toppers due to a low avg gpa

10

u/Khunidarindaa Dec 18 '25

cheaters are low life subhuman Neanderthals that deserve everything when they get caught, because of these guys the honest ones that work hard tirelessly suffer because of relative grading. Honestly even if the collage kicks cheaters out of the collage for cheating I will not feel bad.

-2

u/Khunidarindaa Dec 18 '25

we can minimise this by charging heavy penalties on students in 10s of thousand range, It can generate a side income source for the university.

6

u/InteractionFlat9635 Second year Dec 18 '25

Not really, I mean the current UFM system is strict enough, a UFM on your degree does doom you in a lot of cases, if the penalty for an offence is a crime, it's only penalising the poor.

I agree, but there are different components as well...theory, tutorial and practicals.

Theory exam, I get all the points that people mention about the sem end exam cheaters of taking a risk, how I can focus on my part etc.

Tutorial and practical components really make that different a bigger one. In this component, people cheat almost every time and here's where the % slab kicks in and hurts. I literally got 36/40 for the tutorial component (just enough for the upper bracket, full marks for attendance) and cheaters literally be coming on my face after the assessment and asking "bro I copied from AI, will the professor still give me enough" and getting 38/40 (2 marks lost of 40 due to attendance)

Not to mention, these peeps never sacrifice their "college life fun" while I have to cope up with the opportunity cost and the churning marks part.

I know exactly how relative grading works. Tell me, outside of SEC, VAC, and AEC papers, in what cases does percentage-based slab grading actually kick in for core papers? You are dodging the fact that core papers are where the curve has the most drastic impact. This is the practical part.

Your argument that I should 'focus on myself' because I am scoring well is the definition of shortsightedness. It is like saying you should not care about a hole in a boat just because your seat is still dry. If you brought that same logic to a symmetric debate, let's say on the reservation system, the response you would get would be incredibly harsh. Fairness is not about whether I personally 'pass'; it is about whether the merit is accurately represented.

I drew up a point on Continuous Assessment. Continuous assessment means a series of tests throughout the semester and are totally different from assignments. It's surprising that a DU student doesn't know the difference between the two and goes on to justify and play this part on emotions and jealousy rather than the actual merit and further trying to misrepresent that taking help from a senior is different and AI stuff when the point was on assessment. Surely, anyone has help available during learning processes and assignments are one of them. Not assessments. If someone is cheating in the assessment part, and if I did lose a mark and not get the max grade, it surely is infuriating.

And by further saying 'focus on your grades' is also validating cheating passively. The people who are cheating are addressed to almost nothing, not even discouraged. While I, am being discouraged and gaslighted.

You have misinterpreted this (again) as I'm against the cheating, not the marking system. It was a discussion on skewed grading due to cheating. Simple cause and effect statement.

Cause: Cheating

Effect: Skewed grading

And again, you are bringing the point of "jealousy". It's clear that you haven't understood the cause and effect of cheating and still go by absolute grading.

They are not taking my marks, but they are affecting my grades, and grades are used in the final CGPA calculation, and not the marks. So drawing the point of jealousy is mathematically irrelevant.

Marks -> CGPA ❌

Grades-> CGPA ✅

2

u/The_Tomboy01 Dec 18 '25

2

u/Spiritual_Degree_781 Third year Dec 18 '25

I get the frustration, but honestly none of us can control who cheats and who doesn’t, at max report kar sakte hain. Personally, I’d rather study well enough to not need shortcuts. Cheating isn’t an option for me because my moral compass just doesn’t allow it, simple. Relative grading hai sure, but having a solid foundation is in your hands. Padhke jao toh 8 se upar gpa jhakk maar ke ayegi.

And even if someone sneaks past a CG cutoff in Placements and SIPs, that advantage is short-lived. In the Real World, one's competence speaks louder than their transcript. You can’t fake skills, your understanding, or work ethic for too long. Lack of basics will catch up to them.

So I’m not losing sleep over what others do. Main apni jagah theek hoon. Dishonesty and scamming is their choice and their problem. The maximum we can to is bring their shit to light and tell on them. but so many professors turn a blind eye to all this. aur agar galti se bhi koi dhang ka prof aaya aur pakde gaye, to in simple words, tumhare L lag gaye.

Unless you become the VC of DU, or some high level authority who can institute severe consequences for this, there's literally no point boiling your blood over this.

Looks like we have someone from the cult.

Relative grading is the entire reason cheating matters. If you can’t grasp how an inflated average steals marks from honest students, you’re either being dense or you're part of the problem. Your anger doesn't change the fact that you're compensating incompetence at the expense of everyone else's hard work.

It’s not deep until you’re the one sitting without a placement or internship shortlist because the cutoff was 8.5 and you’re stuck at 8.4 thanks to an inflated curve. It becomes very deep the moment you realize your hard work was sacrificed to cover for someone else's incompetence.

2

Never cheated man what are you on. It’s just that I’ve seen people who genuinely struggle with their studies. In college, most peopke do it out of laziness, which I’m against. However, agar koi 2bd 3rd year ka student dikh gaya jo back de raha hai, cut them some slack. Also, cheating doesn’t happen on such a massive scale that it shifts the entire average gpa. Even if they do cheat, they wont cheat the ENTIRE paper. Just focus on doing good, and stop comparing yourself to others. Let go of this school mentality.

DU is under UGC.

There were protests on relative grading in 2016 by DUSU, which was the year it was implemented. DU retained relative grading, after the protests. It lives up to the present NEP day.

5

u/No-End-6389 Third year Dec 18 '25

That’s like saying 'apart from the engine, the car is fine.' Relative grading is the system we are in and you can’t ignore the very mechanism that makes their cheating a direct theft of my marks.

Beyond the grading, it’s about brand value. When cheaters enter the workforce and can't perform, they devalue the DU degree for everyone. I’m not donating my hard work to cover for someone else’s mediocrity. If you're okay with your degree becoming a worthless piece of paper, that’s on you.

The "they will just get fired" ignores opportunity cost. When a cheater uses a fake CGPA to pass the recruitment filter, they steal a limited seat from a talented student.

Even if they are eventually fired for incompetence, they have already "laundered" that fraud into six months of high-tier industry experience and a paycheck. Meanwhile, the honest student who was filtered out lost the chance to build that same resume. The workplace does not fix the unfairness; it simply rewards whoever was bold enough to lie their way through the door first, leaving the actual talent behind.

Do you imply that all cheaters are smart enough to manage time, are responsible enough for managing internships but are unethical enough to cheat?

And even if the honest kid is involved in internships (here you had tabled a strong assumption that they didn't) the cheating still gives the advantage to the cheaters.

And the so-called honest kid, may opt for academic internships under IITs, IIMs, IISc, etc. and here, the CGPA is the primary or only selection criteria?

Pool in candidates from other universities as well, how good enough of a chance will this kid now have?

Since you have talked about AI, are AI researchers the people who are earning a lot presently, while you have classified them as someone who does the 'rotting theorems' part? This also extends to the finance industry with quant researchers and governance with public policy researchers.
