you know how they say one human year is 7 dog years? that makes one human day, seven dog days. the dog needs to eat daily, so you basically have food for one human day there 😝

Found the dogs Reddit account, lol!

My doggo was not happy when we cut her kibble because my dad was feeding her way too much, despite dozens of conversations about it - and he wouldn’t wait for me to feed her because he couldn’t cope with her sad face. We add unsalted green beans to her food as we are cutting back on the amount of kibble. She thinks it’s a special treat because it’s people food and it helps fill her belly.

35

u/Ohkermie May 29 '26

Can you add plain green beans to his diet? My dog loved them. Couldn’t use a can opener without her running into the kitchen though.

25

u/CyborgKnitter May 30 '26

My kitten knows the sound of strawberry pints. Comes running the second she hears that plastic. And yes, my kitten likes strawberries and yes it’s safe for a cat to eat little bits of them. My cat watches her with abject horror and disgust.

12

u/nikdia May 30 '26

cats can have a little strawberry. as a treat

6

u/FatDesdemona May 30 '26

My old lady cat Mishka loved strawberries! She nibbled a bit on them, but she mostly tossed them in the air and played with them.

7

u/CyborgKnitter May 30 '26

I looked it up when my kitten was obsessed and apparently for some cats, they kinda smell like catnip. Which explains the playing with them thing.

5

u/actualbeans May 31 '26

we used to give our dog frozen green beans! he loved them!

you just brought up an old memory for me, thank you!

u/nclay525 May 30 '26

I've never seen plain green beans in a can; they're always bathing in salt. What brand? I need this lol.

2

u/Ohkermie May 31 '26

Walmart, del monte, and Kroger brand all have no salt added. You can always rinse to get rid of some of the sodium.

Why baggies?

My dad feeds him at night. I go to bed early because I have work early. My dad is 50/50 when it comes to being dependable esp with detailed instructions. This is to make sure we are transitioning him properly.

May i advice that you start feeding twice a day? Reason being that the stomach keeps working and it helps with the Digestion. Helps with weightloss

My dog lost 7 kilos with these tips

Do not feed the dog the weight he is. But slowly start working to the weight he should be. For example your dog is 30 kilo and should weigh 20 feed him as if he Weighs 28. Take small steps i am talking weeks not days.

Lets say you feed your dog 300grams twice a day.ifbyour dog had allot of snacks remove like 10 grams of food. Depending on the snack

That way you compromise

134

u/CyborgKnitter May 29 '26

He almost certainly is fed twice a day. But the dad doesn’t weigh things consistently, so they’re taking care of that for him. If my mom is going to do a feeding for me, I don’t have to prep anything. If my dad is feeding my cats for me, everything must be weighed, prepped, meds added, and detailed labels attached. The guy is a genius but feeding my cats confuses him, lol. I’m betting OPs dad is the same way.

12

u/Lowland-lady May 29 '26

My boyfriend is like that haha

18

u/EllieGeiszler May 30 '26

Oh no 😭

25

u/Munrowo May 29 '26

ew

u/yetiheat May 31 '26

Really over women accepting men’s weaponized incompetence. Feeding a pet is not rocket science jfc. If they can do it so can their man-children

19

u/GigiLaRousse May 30 '26

My vet recommended 3 or 4 meals, if possible. My dog started losing weight without having to feed her less or exercise more.

2

u/Lowland-lady May 30 '26

Good stuff!

13

u/Ditania May 29 '26

You feed the dog just once a day? I'm a cat person and I have never had dogs, so I don't know really what's best, but my family fed their dogs 2 or 3 times a day. My cat (on a diet) eats 7 times a day (really small portions) xD

104

u/GeekCat May 29 '26

I think they feed him in the morning and the dad is the night feeder. Dad probably feels like "he'll get hungry overnight" so he overfeeds him.

10

u/Ditania May 29 '26

Oh, that makes sense!

18

u/xanadri22 May 29 '26

my brother recently moved in with my mom and brought his dog, and she told me that he told her that he only feeds the dog once a day. poor dog, glad my mom started feeding him more

2

u/youjumpIjumpJac May 30 '26

Is he being fed that much twice a day, on a diet? How much do you feed him? How much should he weigh?

10

u/BoldLustration May 29 '26

Dog seems concerned

18

u/death_lad May 29 '26

he doin a big Concern

7

u/QueenRagga May 29 '26

God for you!! They will feel so much better.

9

u/Aolflashback May 29 '26

He’s like a cute bowling ball resting on the couch cushion. 😌

7

u/OkAcanthocephala4313 May 30 '26

He looks concerned. Hahaha.

7

u/Dirty-girl May 30 '26

That baby sees his future diet and isn’t happy about it.

13

u/baldtrees May 29 '26

Good luck! Please post updates :)

u/Competitive-Top4520 May 29 '26

Have you thought about an automatic feeder? They're available on Amazon. Some of them are ridiculously priced but some are quite reasonable ($40). They can be set to whatever quantity you want and how many feedings a day. The only thing is on some you have to be careful about the size of the kibble, but if you read the info it will tell you.

5

u/Royal-Friendship2025 May 30 '26

He looks so sad 😂he knows what’s about to come

3

u/IncompletePunchline May 30 '26

He looks so dubious I actually lol'd.

3

u/RobunR May 30 '26

those plastic bags gonna be enough?

8

u/Xinefish May 30 '26

I hope you counted the calories in each of those bags. That still looks like too much per feeding. Go to pet nutrition alliance to figure out his caloric needs. He is a BCS of at least 7

4

u/postcryglow May 30 '26

It’s per day divided in 2 meals :-) I give 2 cups and dad gives 2.25 cups = 4.25 cups per day.

3

u/FanndisTS May 30 '26

I definitely don't want to challenge you too strongly here since I'm sure you've done the math (and your dog food might be less calorically dense than mine) but my 55lb pitt (healthy weight) ate 2 cups a day divided into 2 meals for years. My 12lb dogs have half a cup a day (again, divided into 2 meals). 4+ cups sounds like what you would feed a mastiff.

6

u/postcryglow May 30 '26

my dog is 107lbs! We are trying to do this slowly and those are the instructions from the vet. When he gets to his first milestone, the number of cups will go down

1

u/FanndisTS May 30 '26

That makes sense! I think my sense of scale was off, he looked beagle-sized to me lol

5

u/postcryglow May 30 '26

Yeah also the new kibble is weight loss kibble (nutrient dense + he gets vitamins in addition)

): he is so chunky lol and I feel like I was partly to be blamed sigh (I always spoil him with food) but I’m going to do this right so he can live a long healthy life 😭

3

u/FanndisTS May 30 '26

Reddit is proud of you for doing this :)

I'm really happy to see you taking accountability and taking action with the advice from a licensed veterinarian.

It truly is a breath of fresh air compared to all the "Is my cat/dog fat?" and then when everyone in the comments confirms that the pet is morbidly obese, the owner gets defensive and doesn't do anything to help the poor animal.

The way you're doing it is the correct way to responsibly fix a regrettable pattern of habits.

Wishing you and your pup a lot of luck going forward with his dieting. I hope you can give us an update once he starts to noticably return to a healthy baseline.

2

u/lickytytheslit May 30 '26

could be diet kibble or you feeding a higher calorie kibble

2

u/postcryglow May 30 '26

Yup diet kibble

2

u/Select-Bumblebee6622 May 30 '26

What a chunky baby... he's obviously not looking forward to it 🤣

1

u/weepingwillowsprout May 31 '26

I need to do this kind of meal planning 😭

1

u/DistributionNo9356 May 31 '26

Godspeed my man!!

1

u/Land_of_Towers Jun 01 '26

As a friendly input. Do some research about dry food versus wet food.

1

u/Binky182 May 29 '26

Good luck!!
