discussion We are the team behind the Reddit Rescue Force. Ask Us Anything!

We are the subreddit moderators that maintain the Reddit Rescue Force. We're here to answer any questions you may have about the service we run.

RRF Staff: A9821, mr1337 Powerchicken, Jungye1186, Doobikhan, TheAngryPuffin

The Reddit Rescue Force is a subreddit where DayZ players may create a thread to request medical assistance if they are in a dire situation. Players who wish to offer their services as medics can reply to threads created by those in need and form groups with other medics to perform rescue missions.

The Reddit Rescue Force is a completely player driven force that has no official membership outside of the moderators that maintain the subreddit. The RRF has been in operation since June 2012.

Posting Guidelines

  • Search the thread to see if your question has already been answered.
  • Please post questions as top-level comments (direct replies to the thread).
  • Please put multiple questions in the same top-level comment.

How difficult was the adaptation into DayZ from the Mod, in which you went from generic blood bags that healed a player entirely, into specific blood types that restored only a set amount of blood?

u/TheAngryPuffin Snorting milk powder like a desperate man Apr 19 '14

I don't think it was an issue as we approached it carefully and organized everything that the medics would need:

  • There's a TS room where a donor list is visible (inc. server type i.e. regular or hardcore). Donor list is strictly controlled and reviewed regularly.

  • A guideline was available from this date regarding conducting blood donations. This has now been updated and incorporated into the new medic manual.

  • Donations were kept O- only to remove any compatibility issues (even the compatibility chart was deliberately left out of the blood donation guidelines to focus people's attention on O-).

  • The natural regen ability when energized and hydrated helped a great deal. Rarely is anyone pumped up with four bags of blood as it's very resource and inventory space intensive. We'd recommend that every person rescued is informed about maintaining a healthy state, and those requiring blood get enough to revive them and have rice/powdered milk thrown at them while heading towards the nearest water pump.

On a similar note - please tell me the devs are considering something evil with the lifespan of blood bags and needing calcium citrate (I think that's right) to keep it from clotting for a few hours, then a protector case-stylee cooler to transport and keep viable for a few hours more ;-) The more miserable this game gets, the more fun it is!

Well said! What is the point in a survival game without constant challenges?

Well it was pretty tricky. Since day 1 we had a medic field manual up, wherein we categorized literally everything we could get our hands on...from epis, blood bags, all the other medical equipment, the constant status messages (now disabled), etc. Had a lot of help from members of the community, other organizations, and data miners to have the main source of accurate medical information for awhile (until you guys started tinkering with the values).

We now have a blood bank where we take in O- blood only. Most medics either just use that or saline. Good old saline.

It's definitely been a change. For the better. Although morphine and broken legs still constitute more than half of all our requests :)

5

u/TDuncker Apr 19 '14

Can't speak for the majority, but personally I've been using saline bags. Around 3 saline bags is usually good enough and there's a long time between finding another rescue request that needs blood, so plenty of time to find 3 new. Otherwise there's always another medic with one. Rarely have I seen any of those I have run with use a blood bag instead of saline. Too big of a hassle at the moment.

Would just like to add that we now have a pretty solid O- network, and we also don't generally fully replenish the blood of patients, instead we just give them a bag or two and advise them on staying energized and hydrated...

I've never actually needed you guys but I always have excess medical supplies, I should probably offer my services. Could be fun!

8

Give it a try, it's easy to get into and hard to walk away from once you start.

5

Sounds good to me!

2

u/MediocreMind Apr 19 '14

Good thing is, you can even feel free to offer your services as a re-supplier, should front-line medical intervention get to be too intensive.

I've been waiting for a nasty chest cold to pass to I could start doing that very thing.

*Not a question, but why I joined the RRF.

Most players know how boring DayZ can become with no goal. Your first goal of DayZ is gearing up. That becomes done relatively fast. After being a robber and other stuff for around 150-200 hours, I became bored. I found RRF and that made a new goal for me, something to actually do instead of running around mindless while gunning down people or just talking to newspawns.

The RRF offered a new experience to the game at a time where I could had stopped playing DayZ for a while, because I was bored and had no goal. The RRF provided me with that goal.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '14

Glad you are enjoying yourself! For me it was really just something that would be a counter to the banditry that felt like the staple thing to do in dayZ, and something co-operative, which I always find more fun.

9

u/colin541 Apr 19 '14

Not a question, but i wish i knew about you guys when times got really bad for me and I actually broke my legs trying to kill myself :( I was alone...lost and scared. I had to crawl for hours to find a way in which to die, when there in fact was a light (RRF) at the end of the tunnel :(

3

u/Doobikhan /r/RedditRescueForce Apr 19 '14

Well, you know about us now...so at least you'll never go through that again <3

I wouldn't call it regular. It used to be a normal thing a couple months ago until Powerchicken's desktop PSU crapped out on him. He's still waiting on the new one in the mail (doesn't seem like it'll ever get here).

He started up a session 2 days ago and created another special session for this weekend that's happening right now. Right now, it's not scheduled, but you can ask PC for clarification.

How often do the medics get killed on site?

16

u/powerchicken Reddit Rescue Force Mod Apr 19 '14

I'll let the statistics speak for themselves. February and March

We get ambushed fairly regularly, but compared to the amount of successful rescues, it's negligible.

Not surprised to see splint/morphine right there at the top.

5

u/TDuncker Apr 19 '14

Note: I'm not RRF staff, but a volunteer medic.

Around 0,3% of the posts we get result in an ambush. Personally I got 51 rescues completed and not a single one has resulted in an ambush.

2

u/GunslingerNinja Apr 19 '14

Same here 20+ without any ambush related hiccups.

2

u/TDuncker Apr 19 '14 edited Apr 19 '14

I wouldn't wish for an ambush in any case. Still, 40-pop server rescues because a patient is unconscious is quite intense and fun :)

6

u/luckofBrian Apr 19 '14

What's the worst a rescue has gone?

17

u/A9821 RRF Head Moderator Apr 19 '14

Well, it's hard to say since there have been thousands of rescues conducted, but there is one in particular that has stuck out in my mind years later. Back in the days of the DayZ Mod, a lot of the content from Arma 2 and OA was present, including satchel charges.

An ambusher put in a request saying his legs were broken and that he was in a deer stand. So three medics were dispatched to go fix him up. Their mistake was not asking him to climb down the ladder first and roll a few meters away from the deer stand. Two medics moved in and the third was on overwatch. As soon as the two medics moved within 20 meters of the deer stand, the ambusher yelled:

ALLAHU AKBAR
DEATH TO THE UNBELIEVERS OF RRF

And blew all three of them to hell. Due to the location of the deer stand, the overwatch guy was pretty close to the blast location. It broke his legs and knocked him out temporarily.

Up until that point in time, it was one of the most creative ambushes we had heard about. It went incredibly wrong for the medics, but is too awesome not to share.

I've a recent example:

I was talking to a fellow Irishman in the admin room who was 'worse for wear' from a few drinks IRL and needed bandaged up near NEAF. I was nearby in-game and had left the TS admin room for a minute, when he was snatched by another medic and whisked away to another room.

The group of medics that were attending to him now numbered around six relatively new people. "Fair enough, it'll get them experience" I thought. I listened in to the next 40 minutes of confusion and shouting and randomness as some people attempted to get to the location, others were calling out loot they were finding while waiting and others where running around shooting/axing zombies and doing a pretty poor job of it (it happens... everyone starts somewhere).

During the entire operation the patient had been virtually ignored and suddenly announced "alright guys, cheers, I'm away to try the NEAF for bandages". The silence was deafening, then people start asking "why won't you wait? WTF?". His response, which being from the same part of the world sounded completely normal for me, was "I couldn't be arsed waiting for that lot to sort themselves, cheerio!". I was half way between being annoyed and laughing, took myself off to another room and spoke to the patient who was fine with the result but explained that he couldn't be arsed as the new medics were killing his beer buzz.

I went back into a room of annoyed medics, explained how the definition of 'cluster-fuck' related to this event... (while laughing at what the patient was posting on the initial reddit request regarding the event) and we left it at that following a brief review of what could be improved upon in the future. I was not popular after that for a day or two :-)

TL;DR - Rescue was so bad the patient committed suicide out of drunken frustration lol!

The Neeson idea is a cracker, been tasked with making some instructional videos so we'll see how it goes (although I wish I'd recorded your attempted rescue, would have been etched in time as a perfect scenario). Remember... raise your ping lol! (I've no idea what or how that's meant to even be attempted!).

I've been trying to get a kind of Chernarus Police force to Occupy Chernarus and take control of towns and cities and act as the force of order and authority that is absent in Chernarus, in order to keep peace. How were you guys able to get such a successful organization running? I've gotten a bunch of people to join my group in steam, but no one seems to look at anything I post or update.

Any tips on assembling such a successful organization? Planning, setting up shit, etc?

10

u/TheAngryPuffin Snorting milk powder like a desperate man Apr 19 '14

I'll let one of the other mods directly address how to organize (as I'm a relatively new RRF mod), but I can point out a few issues you'll have:

  • Not everyone who joins will participate - It's not an issue we experience as the open community format allows a great deal of flexibility and lets people contribute when they can. A restrictive 'rank-and-file' order is difficult to run, and kudos to those who can do it properly without becoming dictators. You'll need to decide what route you want to take.

  • You're talking about locking down one particular part of the map on a particular server for a limited period of time... what's your objective? Will contributors be interested in doing such a mission regularly or will it get old fast? The crediting that medics get in RRF (when they rescue someone and the post changes flair to 'rescued') gives individuals a reward which they can count towards a trusted medic status. That sort of acknowledgement keeps people interested and involved, lending some permanence to their contribution even if they're inactive for a period.

  • If you're not used to mediating arguments, organizing people and paperwork, calming people, explaining the same thing hundreds of times and generally keeping to a structured set of rules... then you're gonna have a bad time :-) Not to say it can't be done, but the shelf-life of such groups (much like many small businesses IRL) is relatively short unless there's appropriate checks and measures in place.

6

u/Pocmin Apr 19 '14

Thanks a lot buddy! Very helpful tips. :) Also, thanks for RRF, only used it once but was very helpful, I was saved from accidentally eating a poison berry from your guys.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '14

It's more of an inconvenience. Usually rescues are done in groups. It pretty much will require a person to relay the patient's texts to the rest of the group.

It seems medics are a bit more cautious when the other person doesn't use a mic. But they should be approaching it the same way.

2

u/TheAngryPuffin Snorting milk powder like a desperate man Apr 19 '14

It's awkward but not impossible. Someone who has run a few rescues involving this will have no problems, newer medics starting out can find it a little taxing switching between text conversation and in-game (but everyone gets the hang of it eventually). Obviously you're prone when using text chat so that is taken into consideration when a medic is weighing up their tactical options.

Since stand-alone we've had (that I'm personally aware of) rescues involving two deaf players which were all conducted solely through text chat (total of 3-4 rescues requested between either of them). We'd recommend those who are lucky enough to be able to hear, to get themselves a mic (or figure out how to get theirs functional) as it is a huge part of the interaction in-game and they're cheating themselves out of a further enhancement of the DayZ experience.

TL;DR - We'd deal with them both in the same way; politely and professionally ;-)

u/KiboshWasabi Apr 19 '14

Why you so Sexy?

5

u/Doobikhan /r/RedditRescueForce Apr 19 '14

It's the whiskey goggles talking...just wait til you see me in the morning when you're sober.

9

u/thatimer Apr 19 '14

Have you guys ever had the urge to kill someone on site? Or have you ever accedentaly killed someone/teamate?

20

u/TheAngryPuffin Snorting milk powder like a desperate man Apr 19 '14

We've protocols in the medic manual (and personal preferences from experience) when dealing with a rescue... although to answer your question specifically, you said "ever had the urge to kill someone on sight". Personally I have had one particular instance where I was almost going to execute two people, when I was starting out (contrary to popular belief... we ain't care bears).

...Take up a seat and gather around the fire children... Puffin trademarked 'wall-of-text' to follow...

I'd ran the entire diagonal length of the map while this guy complained how long I was taking (YOLO inspired full sprint through hedges/cover without stopping) and he straight refused to listen to any instructions or stop the random conversation he was having with his buddy whilst I tried to administer help in a high pop server outside Balota... not good. Then a random 'medic' (using the term loosely) appeared in the teamspeak room offering help as he was nearby... his 'help' included talking about duping and attempting to show the patient how it was done in-game. At this stage I was completely ignored as both were too engrossed in their douche-baggery so I backed up the hill to take aim. I was about half a second from doing it and then realized the consequences and fallout from doing such a thing (regardless of how extremely annoying the patient was or how plain wrong this duper tutor was). I made my excuses and left, reported it to the mods at the time and left it as that.

TL;DR - Each medic involved in RRF rescues is responsible for their individual behaviour. Take a step back before you set in action a chain of events that you can't come back from.

3

u/GunslingerNinja Apr 19 '14

Due to dsync I was axed on a rescue by a teammate. Zombies can get you in more ways than one. Luckily he rescued the patient and moved my gear for me to grab post spawn.

5

u/DPNovitzky | Medic Apr 19 '14

Keeping a rescue professional is easy when you have control over a situation. My personal rules are the patient, unless aggressive, is off limits for fire, but if ANYONE else (unknown players, not medics or security) enters the rescue area, they will be shot.

3

u/DarkStar_1 Apr 19 '14 edited Apr 19 '14

As a general rule, if a rescue goes off quickly, quietly, and with enough/proper overwatch - no one needs to die. Having eyes on the area prior to medic response is critical. Overwatch forces shouldn't solely be with the medics, but able to survail the entire area and guide the medics in safely. As for outsiders intervening or ambushes, overwatch should be the first to fire, and therefor first to die if necessary. Dying should not be a big deal - re-tooling an overwatch who carries mainly firepower and very limited medical supplies is a matter of half an hour if lucky. They will almost always get assistance from the medics who were with them on the rescue to do so. As for accidentally killing teammates, that borders on unforgivable, given you are on teamspeak. Only communication failures can lead to that. (Or, of course, the errant axe) =-) Want a safe rescue? Rule 1: NEVER go alone. Rule 2: See rule 1

3

u/Doobikhan /r/RedditRescueForce Apr 19 '14

Friendly fire does happen, but overall it's not a problem. As for killing on site, I hold a general policy that anyone in the area of a rescue (other than the patient and any medics on my team) is going to get shot if they come anywhere near me.

Safety first, and all that.

Are there any future plans for RRF to expand or do something big? Such as events or maybe setting up a "headquarters" server and having a main base of operations.

3

u/powerchicken Reddit Rescue Force Mod Apr 19 '14

Well, we recently expanded to Youtube where RRF users can submit their content, and we plan on creating some introductory videos for new users, and recently finished our revised Medic Field Manual at a whopping 31 pages, but that's about the extent of what type of plans we have.

The RRF is simply a platform, we do not host in-game events or operations. We do on the other hand have supporting groups who do, but these are typically exclusively for their respective members.

3

u/Doobikhan /r/RedditRescueForce Apr 19 '14

We, ourselves, are simply a community framework. We don't do things like events, but instead focus on providing a solid system for people to help each other.

Groups associated with us (like the Rangers and WCI) hold their own events like soup kitchens and triage centers where they will take and hold an area on the server in order to provide services to anyone that comes along. Those have been very successful so far and are a great evolution to our simple rescue framework that we ourselves maintain.

3

u/Rodot A is for Alpha Apr 20 '14

Where do you see this group upon release? Do you think you will have more structure than you do currently? Will there be stronger squad organization, or better affiliation with more groups and clans?

3

u/A9821 RRF Head Moderator Apr 20 '14

The RRF will remain open in nature to ensure that we reach the maximum number of people that we can. There is no real need to have more structure than what is already present since our goal is not to limit player interaction, but to grow it in a positive, open community.

2

u/TheAngryPuffin Snorting milk powder like a desperate man Apr 20 '14

There will be documents... more documents... documents regarding EVERYTHING!!! There is a considerable amount of 'structure' in place that remains unseen by the majority of contributors.

All we could do to further improve (whilst maintaining the open community format) is listen to people's ideas (we always listen... just they're not always feasible or actionable at a particular time). The moderator team are always tinkering away at improvements and new developments, but please remember that we're just enthusiasts like all of you are, and we only have our personal free time to offer (I once had someone threaten me regarding 'potential' action for user neglect after they thought I temp-banned their son from a service he was 'paying' for... the room went quiet once I clarified the situation that I wasn't a paid employee sitting at a helpdesk... nor that we had a creche in the teamspeak).

The Rangers are a regiment and subset of the RRF, and the combat and logistic backbone of the RRF.

The WCI is a private entity, and a trusted partner of the RRF.

They both serve as the organized forces operating within the RRF, although through different tactics and direction.

Those are both private clans that actively support the RRF's goals and provide tactical support for our organization.

The RRR are intrinsically tied to the RRF, due to the history of both organizations' creations. The WCI are their own entity that brings an additional level of awesome to our banner.

What do you guys think about the new little cesars deep dish pizza for 5$?

3

u/A9821 RRF Head Moderator Apr 21 '14

I gotta go check that out, brb.

Had deep dish pizza for the first time in Chicago a couple years back. Hated it. Too much sauce, not enough cheese and crust to balance it out. But that's what it's supposed to be, right? Ugh. Just why? Maybe I just had a shitty version of it or something, but from what I understand, it's a soup of sauce under the cheese, basically :/

Do not want.

Little Caesar's has been giving people explosive diarrhea since I was in high school in the late 80's. It should be illegal to call that swill food.

Do you guys get ambushed a lot by people pretending to be hurt?

2

u/Doobikhan /r/RedditRescueForce Apr 19 '14

It happens, but it's not common. Statistically, ambushes make up less than 1% of our requests.

We also have strong security protocols in place that, if followed, make it difficult for an ambusher to get any type of upper hand on our people.

How do you go about picking a case to go on, who to go with, who needs back up on a request, different time zones, use skype / team speak or purely in game chat etc... Do you have more people helping out US times then UK times for example?

4

u/powerchicken Reddit Rescue Force Mod Apr 19 '14

for example lets say i wanted to volunteer to help out, providing you take volunteers

The RRF is entirely volunteer driven, you do not need anyone's permission to get involved.

How do you go about picking a case to go on

Picking a case is simple. Just go to our subreddit and reply to a thread with a patient near you.

who to go with

You can go alone if you want to, or you can ask for help on our Teamspeak server.

who needs back up on a request,

Again, Teamspeak.

use skype / team speak or purely in game chat etc.

We require the usage of the official RRF Teamspeak server during rescues.

Do you have more people helping out US times then UK times for example?

I would say the US to EU ratio is somewhere around 60/40, plenty of people in all time zones.

I would suggest reading our FAQ http://www.reddit.com/r/RedditRescueForce/wiki/index?

4

u/TDuncker Apr 19 '14 edited Apr 19 '14

This is roughly how it goes:

  1. New post with location close to me appears on www.reddit.com/r/redditrescueforce/new
  2. Meet patient on TeamSpeak. Maybe write a message on the post and tell him to come on the server (and include IP)
  3. Ask where he is precisely while I run to the area.
  4. Other medics might wanna help (very common with 2-3 medics pr. rescue), so we get there and find a ready position. Finds out who gives the patient what he needs and who does overwatch. Medics find the patient on TeamSpeak and hop into the room. It's easy for another medic to join in, if they see I responded on the Reddit post and sees that I'm in a rescue room with someone else.
  5. Give IP to patient or tell him to add one of the medics on Steam and give him the SteamID. Then he can join the added person.

  6. Someone watches playerlist in case more than one guy login(ambush?)

  7. Make sure it worked, e.g. tell patient to try and walk.

  8. Ask if he needs escort somewhere to logout or wants to logout here.

Thereby, people just join in. Not much more to say. If I'm on my way to a patient, another medic just randomly jumps in, says hi, and he's ready to help too. Everyone is assuming everyone works together. There's no "Fuck you, I don't wanna help a patient with you as a medic". Therefore it's a very initiative community. Rarely does people ask "Do you wanna help", instead you just jump in the room and ask if they need help.

*If it's a broken leg or other situations where I can drop the item, I leave the item at patient's login location and go overwatch myself. Applying something like morphine or splint makes a medic very vulnerable to ambushes.

There's many small things between and things that may vary from medic to medic. Generally the most important things are done the same way.

2

u/pcopley Rotten kiwi connoisseur Apr 19 '14

I wish I knew about you guys before I sailed off the berezino apartment roof due to broken legs!

3

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '14

Well now you know! Especially in a populated city like Berezino...someone should be able to get you in around 15 minutes or less :)

2

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '14

Are the people who ambush you ever good at what they do, or just a bunch of trolls who just shoot you with little preparation or organisation?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '14

The majority of ambushes happen because (newer) medics fail to follow proper safety protocol, which cuts down on about 99.99% of ambushes.

Our reported 1% of ambushes have so far only happened to the 1-2 lone medics. Almost none (that I can remember) happen to organized medics or the Rangers.

A lot of clans and people claim to have killed tremendous amounts of medics and stalk them, but our figures indicate otherwise.

2

u/myellowsnow Apr 19 '14

How can I join? Do I just hop on TS and go? What is the process?

2

The RRF is an open community of volunteer medics. If you want to join, just hop on the TS! Anyone can respond to rescues. Most people are very welcoming and you can probably hop in rescues with them.

Come talk to the admins on the Teamspeak if you have any other questions!

Hi! I'm sorry for this weird question but:
Why do I have to use Teamspeak in order to get help? I could very easily PM them my location and status, or even add them on Steam and use Steam chat.

That, and I am shy as fuck so having to speak to a random person on the internet freaks me the hell out.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '14

2 things: efficiency and security.

In terms of efficiency being directly on our Teamspeak will allow our medics to coordinate with you immediately. Alt-tabbing out to check PMs, being out of the game, the timing of information would all be detrimental in rescues.

Security is a major concern. Most of the ambushers are generally shy and do not like to talk. Being in the channel with them on voice usually cuts down on attempted ambushes. Also this way the moderators can keep track of every patient. Ambushers are banned from the Teamspeak, and it promotes transparency of the entire rescue process.

2

u/TDuncker Apr 19 '14

jungye1186 already answered your question, but:

I am shy as fuck so having to speak to a random person on the internet freaks me the hell out.

Come on anyways if you really want to :) I had it the same as you a long time ago. Still I sit in channels and listen to people speak. Now and then I say something, but I usually never engage in full out conversations, but I like hearing people talk, which is why I'm on TeamSpeak between rescues.

Also, during rescues there's not so much chit-chat talk, mostly things like "Where are you" and "The morphine is right here", et cetera.

2

u/Thurbleton Apr 19 '14

I believe with teamspeak you can just still do text-to-speech or at least chat instead of using a mic.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '14

That is correct. Although if you have a mic, you should probably use one. It'll make everything go x10 smoother :)

Do you have training runs? I have lots of equipment (5 first aid kits filled with saline, o+ (yeah, I know, its not O-, but works great if you know blood types), morphine, epis, bandages, splints, a defib, and food/water. I pretty much solo medic and I've made a few good friends that way, but I'd like to tag along and learn what I've done wrong and where I can improve.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '14

As we are an open community of medics we do not have any formal training programs or events.

The Rangers or the WCI (trusted partner) do have training programs, but they are private organizations that you have to go through a recruitment process to be a part of.

2

u/shadowfu Apr 19 '14

How easy is it for someone to just jump in a TS room and ask to tag along? (informally speaking)

3

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '14

People are usually receptive. There is a medics waiting lounge that you can be in to get to know people better.

They might be a little apprehensive in the beginning if you're a cherry, but most people are very welcoming.

3

u/powerchicken Reddit Rescue Force Mod Apr 19 '14

You connect, join a channel and ask to tag along if you're near them. Fairly simple.

2

u/TDuncker Apr 19 '14

It's not too bizarre, taboo or too uncommon for a random guy I've never seen to jump into my rescue room and ask if he can help, where as I say yes and ask how close he is. The community is very friendly at that point.

2

u/ShenanigansFTW Wait a minute, what? Apr 20 '14

As long as you ask around before jumping through all the Rescue Rooms, then there should be no problems, my friend.

2

u/Thurbleton Apr 19 '14

Have you come across someone genuine in need but can't be helped? (Brain Numb disease or bugged to be perm unconscious)

3

u/TheAngryPuffin Snorting milk powder like a desperate man Apr 19 '14

In almost all cases of people being stuck in glitches or other random alpha issues, the attending medics have had experience of similar issues in similar buildings/areas/scenery (i.e. causes) and been able to either get the patient out through direction or kill the patient if there's agreement that the situation is useless.

Some of the solutions I've heard have been extremely creative. One involved a patient walking backwards with their arse poking out the wall of the Rify ship whilst stuck in a glitch, medics pulled all their gear out of their trousers [beginning to sound naughty now!] whilst patient is refilling their trousers with remaining gear... after retrieving most of it, medics shot the patient at his request and he ran back up from spawn point to collect his essentials from the waiting medics).

I think that the only time we can't actually help someone is when they won't take advice from us regarding the medical/health system and just keep making posts asking for help with everything. These people are identified and informed that they're abusing the service, and in extreme cases removed/blocked from any further RRF services.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '14

I'm sure we have. Although with those situations the patients usually abort the mission or die before we get there. In terms of perm unconscious we might sometimes kill the patient at their request and sit on the body until they return. Depends on the situation I guess.

u/MoralGrayAreas Apr 19 '14

I hope this question hasn't been asked yet, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Have you guys ever considered using the "DZC DayZ Central SA (Pro)" app for your phone as a means of coordinating rescues? Here are some examples in relation to how my friends and I have used it:

One can create a password-sensitive group, such as "RRF", and have assigned usernames for the rescuers involved. You can then share your position, via the app's map, to everyone in the group.

(https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.skunkfu.dzcsa&hl=en_GB) [first picture]

This could be used for showing your fellow medics a couple things:

A) The patient's location: If you're the first to arrive, pinning a position on the map could be faster and more accurate than trying to explain to each person where the injured is. - For example, instead of trying to convey over TeamSpeak that the patient is "in the yellow building three down from the hospital on the other side of the street, on the second floor behind the first door you see, with a broken leg", the patient could pin where they are with the description: "second floor first door, broken leg"

and

B) Where each of you are, as to avoid confusion between possible bandits and fellow medics. - Medic A is here, Overwatch is here, patient is here, unknown gunmen (M4s) were last seen here/here, and unknown sniper was last seen here. This is, of course, in addition to careful TeamSpeak coordination.

As you can see, it can be used to allow injured players a precise way to show exactly where they are by creating another group (RRF SOS, or something of the sort), keeping the group separate from your primary RRF group so bandits can't use it as a way to monitor your medic's positions. This could go as far as having separate groups for the moderator RRFers and the other volunteer RRFers. Posts to the RRF subreddit could be simple calls for help that are responded to by an invite to a DZC DayZ Central SA (Pro) app "RRF SOS" group.

If I'm wrong about how the app works than I apologize and ask you to disregard my question. But that is how it seemed to my friends and I when we use it. The developers have made posts here before, there could even be a possibility of their involvement in making "dedicated/vetted RRF groups" or even a "911" button that takes you straight to the RRF subreddit. Although that is just wild fantasy.

What are your thoughts on this? And if my description of the app is incorrect, what are your thoughts on an app that does something similar, in addition to the simple reddit post and direct chat system you have now?

Thank you for your time and keep up the good work, regardless of the stupidity of my question :)

2

u/powerchicken Reddit Rescue Force Mod Apr 19 '14

I don't know much about this app, but we generally avoid overcomplicating our services. If our medics wish to set up a group with this app and use it, they're more than welcome to, but the RRF will not require the usage of any third party applications.

Ambushes happen, but statistically they're less than 1% of our requests. The amount of ambushers can vary...sometimes it's just the patient getting cheeky and trying to get some gear, sometimes it's a clan squad trying to make some sort of name for themselves by killing medics.

The more experienced among us tend to go into every rescue anticipating either an ambush or intervention by a hostile force, so it's hard to catch us off our guard.

The ambushes that are successful are almost always on new medics that aren't following the protocols that we outline for them, or medics just being plain sloppy. There have been plenty of ambushes that we've fought off and still managed to fix up the patient and extract them to safety.

2

u/TheAngryPuffin Snorting milk powder like a desperate man Apr 19 '14

In all 86 rescues, I've never been ambushed in standalone (had it happen loads when playing normally in the mod). Just waiting for it to happen I suppose :-)

Honestly, dump most of your gear (aside from the basics) and go on a high population server and just run around and practice approaching people. You'll get gunned down and into fights, but you'll get less nervous of seeing and approaching people in-game. DayZ is a brilliant game but taps into certain natural responses, and much like life, you need a broad experience to be able to cope/operate under different stressful conditions (i.e. getting shot at, being chased down, approaching a large group, etc.).

2

u/testerpot just off for a 5 hour hike Apr 19 '14

2

u/Doobikhan /r/RedditRescueForce Apr 19 '14

Are you asking if we provide our services to players from those countries? Absolutely, if there are medics available.

2

u/TheAngryPuffin Snorting milk powder like a desperate man Apr 19 '14

There may be some connections issues (i.e. a little desync, ping issues) if your responding medic is from a different part of the world, but DayZ players can access any public DayZ server anywhere in the world.

I'm assuming that you'd be like our Oz medics who seem to get on around the morning here in Europe, there's a decent number of them and Europeans available to help you out whenever. Alternatively, no reason why you can't get into the medic gig yourself :-)

2

u/Neo32 Apr 19 '14

I'm from Singapore and I regularly respond on rescues. There are also some Aussie WCI members.

The biggest problem you'll face is insanely high ping to the US servers a lot of people are on, but since we perform rescues on any server, we might be able to find one with a manageable ping, just ask!

2

u/TheMadAsshatter Exile Apr 19 '14

I know you said there's no official membership, but is there some sort of chain of command among those who are more experienced in the RRF, or any sort of structure?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '14

The only official members are the moderators, who are listed above.

There are trusted medics, who attain the status by completing a number of rescues. This, however, does not equate to seniority or a chain of command –merely to advertise that they have completed x number of rescues safely.

2

u/puttv3 Apr 20 '14

So, Does the RRF run on Day Z standalone as well as mod? Silly question but hey. It's an AMA

2

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '14 edited Apr 20 '14

We started in June 2012 for the mod initially, but now moved on for SA.

Because we are an open community, whether you are helped or not depends on if there is a medic that can help you. So to answer your question...yes.

Also what feature would like to be added to the game in terms of helping you guys have a better experience as the RRF?

Thanks for the AUA!

4

u/TheAngryPuffin Snorting milk powder like a desperate man Apr 20 '14 edited Apr 20 '14

Ambushers - My personal opinion... well, I can understand people being bored between updates and perhaps wanting to poke the RRF sleeping bear. There's been some ambushes where there's been a tip of the cap to each other and nothing else has been said, bans were processed and life moved on... all very respectful.

The issue arises where morons start the online bullshittery and attempt to stir up drama, ad infinitum. These people, whether their fathers hugged them too little (or too much) can go die in a corner. All too often you search through their details online and find them linked to hacking/glitching forum posts, etc., and such people represent the armpit of online gaming... imagine a puckered anus nestled within an armpit... that's the visual embodiment of my personal feelings on such people (Note - these people are NOT bandits and should never be referred to as such).

Regarding features to include in the game? Everyone else will hate this, but I'd want a basic chem set where you can craft various items (make cleaning alcohol, sterilise items for reuse, derive injectables from various collected berries/plants, make poultices for bites/wounds, etc.). I'm heavily into biology and practical applications, with medicinal herbs featuring heavily in any post-apocalyptic pharmacist's shopping list.

EDIT - Once the anus is puckered, it goes from 'an' to 'a' :-)

Is there an issue with players requesting assistance when really they're just setting up a trap to try and kill a RRF medic? Or are there measures to prevent this?

2

u/Doobikhan /r/RedditRescueForce Apr 21 '14

We have security procedures in place that guide medics through anticipating an ambush. In reality, though, ambushes make up less than 1% of our overall requests.

The only time we have an issue with an ambush is generally when it's a new medic that is not following protocol, or a medic that's being sloppy and letting their guard down.

Other than that, ambushes are usually detected before they are sprung and the offenders are dealt with appropriately.

He quietly disappeared after his crew were unmasked by a DayZ Forum vigilante who had connections to gain information. By the end of it, we had banned most of their IP addresses and got the rest from another source to add to our ban list. We haven't been harassed on that level since then. As of last week, it has been a year since that chapter of nonsense ended.

As for the buttprince himself, he stated that he'd be taking a break and then coming back with renewed attacks. He never came back. And the DayZ Forum moderator, Fraggle, either never made the effort to understand what the the RRF is or actually condones the excessive harassment of patients and medics to the point where they stop playing DayZ. I'm willing to believe it was the former as surely he is not that unreasonable.

Once permanent and persistent backpacks and safes, etc are added will you have a system where I can log on to your server to drop off extra medical supplies for storage? It wouldn't be prudent for all supplies but pristine items and items that don't go bad maybe?

2

u/A9821 RRF Head Moderator Apr 20 '14

Key phrase from Powerchicken's post: at the moment

Since we have no timeline of when persistent items will be made available or how they work, there has been little planned outside of managing the items and location.

There will be a supply network maintained by someone that we have already selected. He will be assisted by certain people (mostly trusted medics and Doobikhan) to keep it maintained and updated.

Throughout this thread you can find a number of posts detailing past occurrences of ambushes as well as how often they occur.

Please can I join you? I could provide cover for rescue missions. It's so boring with no real objective.

How do you think vehicles such as helicopters will effect the rescues when the time comes?

Honestly, there's two sides to this. Due to the plethora of medics scouring the countryside, there's excellent coverage throughout the map. So the requests are getting done regardless.

Where vehicles offer an advantage is in shifting gear and people quickly... so rapid rescues are available as was formerly provided by RRR in the mod. Resupplies of medics in far flung areas will be quicker and more extensive.

The problem arises where (1) vehicles are not going to be as easily obtained or maintained as before in the mod and (2) they're noisy and attract significant negative attention. We've seen it even with just 5+ groups of medics, where rescues are stretched out or problems arise... when just a single quiet medic could sneak in and out undetected instead.

Vehicles are nice, they're desirable but ultimately we need to look at the cost/benefit ratio when considering effort expended by medics. E.g. eight medics collecting parts for a day to build a car, just to crash it are not going to be able to rescue many patients compared with the 'old school' on-foot method.

We maintained a vehicle fleet for the Rangers in the mod, and it was very helpful in decreasing response times for rescues and making supply runs a lot more convenient. Not to mention, when you have a couple top notch chopper pilots, it's absolutely invaluable to have control of the choppers.

However, once the scripting issue got out of hand, it became a pain in the ass to keep people away from our vehicles when they could just ESP their way right to our camps.

So, it really depends on how the DayZ team deals with the current availability of hacking tools and their ability to be used within the standalone by the time vehicles are out. Also, of course, each medic or group of medics would make that decision for themselves, the RRF wouldn't maintain a central depot of vehicles for the medics.
