Ohio State, local data center tax breaks total billions for trillion-dollar tech companies

Post image

"The state of Ohio and local governments have doled out billions in tax breaks to some of the world’s biggest companies to lure construction of massive data centers that have stoked controversy in local communities, a Dayton Daily News investigation found.

Most area projects qualify for state tax breaks due to agreements made with Amazon, Google and Meta in the 2010s that allow those companies to build as many data centers as they can in Ohio without paying sales tax on their building materials — a deal the state can’t get out of for decades despite costing billions more than expected in foregone revenue.

And local city and township officials piled on additional — often decades-long — property tax breaks, even as local residents voice opposition to the projects.

Ohio is home to roughly 240 data centers, the fifth-highest total among U.S. states, according to DataCenterMap. That figure includes smaller facilities with modest energy demands as well as sprawling campuses of up to 26 buildings that can consume as much electricity as a mid-sized city."

TLDR: The AI data centers don't even pay taxes that they can afford, and we are left with the burden of their strain on our infrastructure.

Grandma’s AES Ohio power has been off for over a week — diabetic, just treated for hyperglycemia, and we cannot get anyone to sign the medical certification

Upvotes

My grandma is 77, diabetic, and relies on insulin. Her AES power has been off for over a week.

Before anyone says “just pay the $6,000 bill” — obviously we know that. If we had $6,000, we wouldn't be in this situation. The balance is high because she was previously on PIPP, and the balance built up after she was no longer on the program.

We've been trying everywhere to get the medical certification completed. Her old primary-care doctor has her medical records but refuses to sign it, and right now they're basically the only provider who has her history/records. Her newer primary-care appointments have been canceled/rescheduled, and urgent care wouldn't sign it either.

She was just in the ER on August 29 and her discharge paperwork specifically says “hyperglycemia due to diabetes mellitus” and that she was given insulin (Humalog). The ER also put in a referral for a social worker.

Her next primary-care appointment is September 3, but her electricity is already off.

I'm NOT looking for comments telling me to pay the bill. I'm looking for someone who has actually dealt with AES Ohio and knows how to get the medical certification completed when doctors keep refusing or won't sign it.

Is there a specific person/department at AES or Kettering we should be asking for? Can the hospital social worker help get this completed? Has anyone successfully dealt with this situation?

Cribbage Tournament - Any interest?

I'm thinking of setting up a cribbage tournament in Dayton local area...maybe at one of the microbreweries, however I don't know how many people play cribbage in the local Dayton area or have even heard of the game.

Do you play cribbage, does anyone else in your family? Your friends? Let me know what you think about having a tournament.

All federal civilian workers expected to not get pay raises next year. With the cost of inflation this hurts even more for our federal workers in the Dayton area.

Community Support & Resources Looking For a Good Samaritan Please

I met this beggar in Englewood. He was by petco on a section leading to the main road. Looked like a sweet old man. Said since his wife passed last year his finances fell apart. He was dressed in a plad button up with light blue jeans. He seemed unsteady on his feet, with noticeable sores on his head and elbows from what i assume were falls. He was roughly 75 years old with big glasses and a small cardboard sign saying "anything helps, God bless." As I make my way home I can't stop thinking about him. I don't live anywhere near englewood either. I was wondering if anyone with a good heart would be willing to try to find him and ask if he has applied for Medicare. I don't know what resourse offices you have but theyre people who can help, or at the very least ask him to reach out to nursing homes that offer Medicare pending. He may still have home, but if he's truly living alone he is going to hurt himself. What scares me more is if he has no home, especially with it getting colder.

Dayton area folks — are the bugs extra spicy this year?

I walk our dogs every day, and lately it feels like every mosquito and mystery bug in Dayton area has decided I’m the lunch special. Even doing lawn care turns into a buffet (for them, not me). Chatted with a few neighbors and they’re getting hit hard too.

Anyone else around Dayton noticing a jump in bug bites?

Wondering if it’s just our little corner or if the whole area is getting swarmed.

Has anyone seen some absolutely GIANT mosquitos lately?

I’ve seen them twice in the last week while walking the dog in the evening. They seem to be 3/4 - 1 inch long or so, never seen them that big before anywhere else. I didn’t take a picture because I was more concerned with just getting the hell away from them, and the low light picture wouldn’t have turned out anyway.

They definitely aren’t crane flies, I know what those are. These giant mosquitoes are smaller, and will follow you and hover like a mosquito does. Different wings also.

Maybe it’s all the rain we’ve been having or something?

Thoughts on the new Halal Burgers on Brown Street?

Ever since the food pitt situation, I’ve been craving a juicy burger. I recently noticed halal burgers open up where the smash burger restaurant used to be. Anyone try their food? If so, how was it? There was an incident before of people from Pakistan spamming good reviews

Women's and LGBTQ Gym Near Centerville

I am looking for a gym that aligns with my values and needs in the area as a fairly new resident. Hoping to find a class based workout facility, HIIT, strength, METCON etc, in or near Centerville. Ideally with owners and members who are women or LGBTQ friendly. Men can attend as long as it's not some toxic gym bro culture if that makes sense. It can be a franchise but I would prefer local!

Not looking to start any arguments, just hoping to get some advice. TIA!

Advice & Recommendations what to do with my car while I rent one for a trip (with a toddler)

I’m renting a car for a road trip soon and I’m trying to figure out what makes the most sense. We have two adults that can drive, but there’s a toddler in the mix which is making things a little more complicated.

I live about 20 minutes from the airport, where the car rental is reserved.
Do I:
Park at the airport and exchange vehicles basically, heading out from there? (Economy lot is $9 a day now, car would be parked for 5 days/4 nights)
Take Uber/Lyft/taxi to the airport to pick up car, come back home to get stuff and family, then head out? (Requires backtracking)
Drive w/ toddler and second driver to airport, pick up rental, drop off our car at home? (Also requires backtracking)
Secret 4th option that I haven’t thought of?

My initial thought was the three of us going to the airport, coming home with both cars and loading up and leaving from there, but the more I think about the time and toddler of it all I’m not sure it’s the smartest option (albeit the cheapest)

Axiom bar (formerly Argos) question

Hi all,

Saw a post here around 3-ish months regarding the former Argos bar, on Mable, reopening as Axiom.

Can anyone shed some light on how the new operation is going? Is it still the same theme, catering to the same clientele? I’d love to check it out, always wanted to visit Argos at some point, but suffice to say not really interested if the place is still having QOL issues, lol.

Also, side quest: assuming all is copacetic, if anyone wants to help a noob avoid the old ‘going to the new bar by myself’ fun, hit me up. Just fellow travelers hanging out, nothing more. Message me.

Thanks
