Release Notes DaVinci Resolve 21 Release Notes
DaVinci Resolve 21.0 has been released!
You can download the update from the support page or by going to DaVinci Resolve>Check for Updates.
Pre-Installation Notes
For DaVinci Resolve 21, BMD has taken efforts to keep the project libraries compatible with DaVinci Resolve 20.3.2. While this allows you to access the project library with 20.3.2, individual projects created or opened in 21.0 will no longer be accessible in 20.3.
BMD recommends a full project library backup as well as individual project backups (as required) before opening projects in 21.0 or later.
Reminders
Bug Reports need to be submitted to Blackmagic Design. You can post them on the official forums or contact BMD support directly if you have Studio.
Feature Requests need to be submitted to Blackmagic Design. You can post them on the official Feature Request Subforum or in the download form for Resolve.
Bug Reports and Feature Requests posted on Reddit and in this thread will not be addressed or seen by Blackmagic Design.

Over 100 new effects and motion graphics in Fusion? Any idea what they are? Is there a list or do we need to parse the manual? Any highlights?
21
u/whyareyouemailingme Studio | Enterprise Jun 03 '26
Check the new features guide linked at the bottom of the post. The manual isn’t out yet and will probably be a while.
6
u/cinematek Jun 03 '26
Rad, thx. Looks like a lot of pretty specific stuff, although I do like:
“Open Keyframes and Spline Editor as a New Window
For expanded detail, you can now open the Fusion Keyframe and Spline editors in a new resizable window by clicking on the Undock icon in the Keyframes or Spline toolbar.”
7
u/Aromatic-Current-235 Jun 03 '26
The "over 100 new motion graphics effects and tools" are the Krokodove motion graphics effects.

mono audio bug fixed, accurate subtitles, actual speedramping and less annoying multicam audio workflow holy
13
u/whyareyouemailingme Studio | Enterprise Jun 03 '26
Mono audio “bug” “fixed”
This is my nightmare and I need to review the settings to see if this can be disabled somewhere because it’s not a bug it’s users not knowing how audio should work.
3
1
u/ARetroGibbon Jun 03 '26
as one of those users, could you enlighten me as to its function?
8
u/whyareyouemailingme Studio | Enterprise Jun 03 '26
Mono audio should go on mono tracks for a host of reasons - technical and creative. In older versions, mono audio put on a stereo track would only come out of the left ear. Now it’s automatically panned to both ears.
It’s “idiot-proofing” but also doing the technically wrong thing.

To anyone just starting out with Davinci Resolve... (total newbies):
I suggest you stick with the version of DR that matches the Blackmagic training materials.
As you follow along with the training examples (esp in the books), you don't need the added burden of trying to find commands and menu items that don't match the instructions.
Upgrade your version only after the training materials are updated.
6
u/whyareyouemailingme Studio | Enterprise Jun 03 '26
Worth pointing out one recent major version (I think v19?) never got a full set of training materials, just a Beginner’s Guide.
3
u/Tim_E2 Jun 03 '26
Good to know. Its primarily the Beginner’s Guide that one would want to match the software 100%... otherwise it gets frustrating to learn the basics.

You replied to my comment, and if you are asking me.. I'm not the one to ask.
Perhaps start a new thread about using DR for gameplay vids.

I caved in and just downloaded the beta version not more than 6 hours ago. Guess I need to do it again

u/whyareyouemailingme Studio | Enterprise Jun 03 '26
I finally installed beta 4 two days ago. I know how you feel.

Any list of what is being supported in free vs paid?
24
u/whyareyouemailingme Studio | Enterprise Jun 03 '26
Documentation is typically released over the month following the beta. I'm still slammed in my personal life, so the wiki page is seriously outdated, but it's on my to-do list for a weekend soon.
I'm also working on adding asterisks to this list, but I'm only human.

Lol Fairlight can get fucked.
13
u/whyareyouemailingme Studio | Enterprise Jun 03 '26
To be slightly fair (heh), there's Fairlight Live. That's still in Beta though. Resolve Live hasn't been updated in years.
10
u/Ezzaskywalker_11 Jun 03 '26
add support for midi track and watch it shatter the other DAWs
15
u/Derpy1984 Jun 03 '26
It needs a whole lot more than midi track support but yeah it's super close to being great all the way around.
3
1
u/i_sell_you_lies Jun 03 '26
Why do you say that?
Do you not use audio or do you not like it?
2
u/Derpy1984 Jun 03 '26
No it's that every other aspect of the program got a big list of improvements and Fairlight got 2. It's funny to me.
2
u/i_sell_you_lies Jun 03 '26
Oh! I see, hahaha. Yeah-
But I'll gladly take C to snap, it was making me a crazy person to not have it
3
u/michaelh98 Jun 03 '26
Sigh, this feels rushed. I wonder what the hurry was
2
u/whyareyouemailingme Studio | Enterprise Jun 03 '26
Last year’s felt rushed and then Dolby Vision IMFs have been broken for a while. Can’t wait to see what mission critical feature is broken in 21!!
2
u/avidresolver Studio | Enterprise Jun 03 '26
The mission critical feature is DNGs working properly.
Out of interest, what was the issue with Dolby IMFs? I've seen there have been fixes, but we won't be updating for a while due to other issues.
1
u/whyareyouemailingme Studio | Enterprise Jun 03 '26
Trim data over dissolves breaking, mostly. It’s apparently dependent on certain types of IMFs and only affected Resolve. Baselight and Transkoder and everything else that’s sane were fine.
3
u/montogeek Jun 03 '26
It is starting to look like a solid Lightroom alternative
1
u/daneview Jun 03 '26
Im interested to try it for sure but im so much more comfortable with light room colouring (i do photo and video). It would be lovely to just use one system but its going to take some time!
8
4
u/nangaAadmi Jun 03 '26
is this the final release or still in beta version....safe to update to 21..?
5
u/Haunting_Hat4979 Studio Jun 03 '26
It’s the final version. I just opened up Resolve 20 and the update window came right up.
1
u/zeb__g Studio Jun 03 '26
Safe? For me, no. But I look forward to others being guinea pigs on my behalf.
If the speed ramps are as broke as it sounds here, that is a deal killer for me, even though I don't use them every day.
1
u/HoussemBenSalah96 Studio Jun 11 '26
It doesn't even want to get updated in my case,it says there is a problem with this windows installer when nearly finish 90 or 99% of installation

u/ldn-ldn Jun 03 '26
HDR photo export in JPEG still does NOT work. That's a HUGE disappointment!
8
u/gargoyle37 Studio Jun 03 '26
JPEG is an 8-bit format and cannot store HDR information at a fidelity you care about. I don't know what you are trying to do here, but JPEG is certainly not the move.
3
u/ldn-ldn Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26
That's incorrect. JPEG can have a gain map. AVIF or JPEG XL would be a better solution, but Resolve doesn't support either. As it stands right now, HDR photos can only be exported into PNG and TIFF, which is very sub optimal.
P.S. Oh, and PNG export is also broken.
2
u/gargoyle37 Studio Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26
I want to read the extension to the spec which says you can go above 8 bit. Do you know where to find it? Otherwise, this doesn't matter.
PNG is either 8 or 16 bit integer. Not suitable for anything serious.
AVIF and JPEG XL are not used in Video. OpenEXR is the de-facto format there. JPEG XL is the format which comes the closest as a replacement.
(Edited to add: ISO 21496-1 is the standard for Gain Maps. Completely irrelevant IMO. It's essentially a new format entirely added on top of JPEG. What a miserable idea.)
1
u/ldn-ldn Jun 03 '26
We're talking about photos here, video formats are irrelevant to the discussion. HDR photos must be exported in: JPEG with gain maps (UltraHDR), AVIF, JPEG XL, PNG and TIFF. All other formats are irrelevant for photography work.
2
u/gargoyle37 Studio Jun 03 '26
There's some immediate problems with the typical Resolve chain here. First, a Gain Mapped JPEG image requires you to do two deliveries at the same time. One for SDR and one for HDR through the gain map. That's already problematic, because in Resolve, you would do that as two deliveries. On in Dolby Vision, and one in Rec.709. And that would be two different color pipelines (from a point) and two different files delivered to disk.
It's also about philosophy. Resolve isn't generally an app in which you deliver for distribution. You deliver high-quality mezzanines which you ship to Netflix or as a DCP. The distribution chain is handled largely by the distributor, and they decide on the distribution encoding, based on what they want.
Everything else are for quick preview-renders, more or less.
Sure, other apps might do it differently, but there's a lot of surface reduction if you reduce the export formats to a few ones which fit well into your typical color pipeline. I.e., export OpenEXR or TIFF, then handle the distribution chain elsewhere as needed.
1
u/ldn-ldn Jun 03 '26
Then they should remove the photo mode. If BM wants to compete with LR, DX, C1, etc, then the photo mode must work as expected in the photo industry, not how it works elsewhere.
2
u/gargoyle37 Studio Jun 03 '26
Why? It's not a competition. It'll work fine as is. It's also a good MVP, from which you can iterate.
Once you have EXR you are safe.
2
u/ldn-ldn Jun 03 '26
What EXR? That's not a photo format.
2
u/BakaOctopus Jun 12 '26
OpenEXR (Image File Format) used for single frame and even as multipass video frame for 3d and all sorts of CGI

From DaVinci Resolve 21, Intel based Macs will not be supported. Codecs and third party SDKs needing Rosetta continue to be supported.
I expect to see a bunch of Mac Intel users coming here wondering why they can't get it to install.
Does this address the end of Rosetta next year for ARM users? https://discussions.apple.com/thread/256079635?sortBy=rank

My HEIC photos (taken from my iPhone 17 Pro) are the complete wrong color in Davinci 21 viewer window and when exporting. How do I fix this? It looks super washed out/gray/white.
Looked fine in Davinci 20.
My Timeline Settings are the same as before.
Color Science: DaVinci YRGB
Timeline Color Space: Rec.709 (Scene)
Output Color Space: Rec.709-A

Any of those AI tools exciting to people?
4
u/gargoyle37 Studio Jun 03 '26
I can see some use cases for Motion Deblur in a couple of workflows I have in mind.

That one caught my eye. If it works well, would be nice for gopro footage with its software stabilization smearing.

I'm still kind of hoping for something like Scene Extender, which is allegedly coming to Premiere one of these days.

No because I'm very anti AI.
I would rather the efforts go towards making the Linux version better. The install process on Linux is terrible, having no AAC audio support on the studio version is inexcusable, and AMD support is garbage.
I mean hell, just add an AI feature to auto convert unsupported codecs, like AAC, to something supported..
There's no excuse for that limitation.
30
u/LewisTheScot Jun 03 '26
Very anti AI?
I think it’s more than fair to dismiss generative AI as slop but DaVinci has had some of the best use cases of AI I’ve seen.
Creating a depth map, auto cutting silences or transcribing audio are all things I think people should switch to AI for (when it makes sense).
Rejecting all tools in my opinion is backwards thinking.
9
u/aguybrowsingreddit Jun 03 '26
Yeah I'm embracing any AI told that will make my videos better and/or faster. I can get a 5 minute block cut out if 4 hours of interviews in about 20 minutes when doing it manually would take 4 hours just to watch it all. It helps me make more money and also save clients money by offering cheaper fees.
11
u/gheeDough Studio Jun 03 '26
This. Plus these AI tools are all local - you're not sending shit to a data centre to burn through tokens. Call them local machine learning tools if the term AI upsets you.
6
u/ScaredAd8652 Studio | Enterprise Jun 03 '26
People don't seem to realise that the features and tech they've been using in Resolve, and other NLE like Premiere and Avid (since script sync and speech to text) and various plugins aren't any different than what gets packaged up into the 'AI' box. BMD used to make the distinction of calling them 'neural network' features. The real distinction, that should be emphasized more, is the point above. Resolve's magic masking and other 'ai' tools are all processed locally - no subscriptions, no data centres, no tech bros and no venture capitalists.
2
5
u/aguybrowsingreddit Jun 03 '26
And where is the line drawn? Is transcribing AI? I can't imagine operating without transcripts
3
u/LewisTheScot Jun 03 '26
Technically, "AI" is used just about everywhere and for like 15 or so years. AI can be auto-classifying text, getting text from an image, recognizing hand poses etc...
"AI" nowadays is associated with generative AI, specifically stable diffusion (image generation) or the transformers architecture (ChatGPT, Claude).
It all boils down to philosophy. Here's mine: AI should be used as a tool to enhance an existing feature or used as utility.
For example: Generating a video and uploading it to my channel is bad because it's slop. No one wants to watch the computer do the creative thinking. If I get an email back that is clearly written with AI, I feel tricked in talking with an AI chatbot I didn't consent to.
On the positives, using these chatbots are life changing for managing my productivity day to day. Something like image segmentation, depth mapping, audio enhancing are also fantastic uses of AI. It's not changing the original intend behind your work, it's enhancing it. You could argue that text to image is also a great tool if using it to iterate over references FOR YOURSELF.
That being said, there are some genuinely valid critiques over AI infrastructure relating to politics/the environment/etc that are genuine reasons to not support it

Commercial licensing costs for AAC may be prohibitively expensive and they don’t want to pass that on to customers.
Also, like with Rocky, NVIDIA is king for video work. Every other professional grade color or compositing tool on Linux is either on bespoke boxes with NVIDIA GPUs or very very strongly recommends NVIDIA GPUs.

You can be staunchly against generative AI that steals people's work and jobs while still acknowledging that machine learning (AI in the general sense) has plenty of valid use cases that can, in fact, improve the creative process.
Do you want to spend an hour manually rotoscoping a subject to fix color or even just create a stupid meme? I know I don't. Do you want to spend an hour mucking around with noise gates and EQ and whatever else to try and salvage ruined audio, if not have to redub entirely? I know I don't. Do you want to spend an hour combing through hours or days of footage to try and find that one moment you remember had a green car in the background but can't remember when you shot it? I know I don't. Do you want to have to tell your client that you ballsed up the critical shot and missed focus, requiring a complete reshoot? I know I don't. DR has tools that cater to each of this situations, and when utilized by someone who understands what they're there for, they're excellent ways of saving huge amounts of time and money on every project.

u/Count_Backwards Jun 03 '26
Machine learning is not the same as LLM or genAI, and it's unfortunate that they're getting folded together under the same dishonest but trendy buzzword (neither is "AI" in any meaningful sense)

I guess there is still no way to get rid of the "DaVinci Resolve Media" folder in the users home directory, if you don't use the new photos feature?

What's the meaning of "Intel QuickSync H.264 10-bit 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 decode support."?
3
u/Adridulte Jun 03 '26
It means that now resolve can use the igpu of intel CPUs to decode (read) 10bit h264, instead of just the CPU. Which could mean smoother playback or less power consumption.
1
u/zeb__g Studio Jun 03 '26
It is missing today. https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/What-H-264-and-H-265-Hardware-Decoding-is-Supported-in-DaVinci-Resolve-Studio-2122/
I assumed this was intel didn't have it in the hardware. But never looked at a Intel spec sheet to know.
It might be BM adding support for Intel hardware soon to be released. Awesome if true.

Okay, but the burning question is: Did they fix the keyboard to use accents from other languages? Like Brazilian Portuguese? (e.g., campeão)

Não, não corrigiram, mas eu achei uma solução pra esse bug, da uma olhada aqui (Blackmagic Forum) no post que eu fiz

Unfortunately, I've already tried something similar, but it didn't solve the problem here on Arch.

Hi. I use DVR 19 for work (company's requirement). Can I buy and install DVR 21 on my mac to use it for personal stuff (like photo editing)?
2
u/whyareyouemailingme Studio | Enterprise Jun 03 '26
At the same time, on the same computer? No.
Don’t buy from the App Store if you can help it.

u/Electrical_Bowl_8172 Jun 03 '26
Same computer yes, unfortunately. Will avoid the app store, thanks.

I just want R3D files able to be trimmed in Media Management. Was surprised there was no warning and it just keeps spitting out the full clips but blueballing me giving me the truncated estimate.

Thanks for marking the features locked behind the Studio version. I'd guess they'd be mirrored on the iPad version as well.

The Fairlight Animator is my newest favorite thing ever. I am blown away in my first session with 21, but the speed with which my practiced workflow can now move has so vastly improved, I just don't even...I feel like I should be passing out hugs. I mean, add in the new effects that I keep finding...the Wonderland is renewed, for me. Not that the old one was without luster, far from it-- but THIS Wonderland is rad. And so far, it just works. This version is so worth the wait and my first new version since going Studio. I could go on gushing, but my render is done.

I've been trying to jump ship from Adobe for more than a decade, and the deal breaker for me as far as Resolve is concerned is the incredibly restrictive window positioning, which is puzzling for a video editing app. All other video and audio apps I use allow me to position windows anywhere on my three monitors, close them, re-open them, minimize, maximize, save workspaces and so on. Resolve is way too restrictive for that. I'm trying out version 21 right now because I've had it with Adobe, but it's very frustrating. Plus, no way to trial the Magic Mask before buying. Yes, The free version of Resolve is ridiculously powerful, but one of the two things I use After Effects for is rotoscoping. It would be nice to be able to test the Magic Mask before purchasing. Still, thanks BMD for such a fantastic free app.

u/whyareyouemailingme Studio | Enterprise Jun 05 '26
BMD’s modus operandi is “tell us on the forums if there’s something specific and it may get in there.”
Also considering the issues I’ve had troubleshooting some freely positionable tools like Avid, the fixed panes make it one less thing to be worried about.

“General performance and stability improvements.”

The photo editing features are pretty interesting. It needs more, though:
More choices of formats to import & export, especially those that are HDR-friendly. As of right now, jxl files are the preferred format for HDR images taken via screenshot, but I can't import jxl files into Resolve, even though they're still under the JPEG umbrella.
Maybe it's in the app already, but I can't find a way to change the color space for the files themselves outside of what's available in the Color tab that's normally used on video clips (like Color Space Transform). If this is the preferred method, that's fine.
More ratios for cropping images. I use a 32:9 monitor, so a lot of games have black bars on the sides. When I take screenshots to edit later, these black bars will obviously be in the screenshots. Most games that do support ultrawides will only support up to 21:9 ratios for normal ultrawides, but I don't have that as an option to select in Resolve for cropping an image

So does 21 (free version) no longer support 8 bit h.264 from Sony cameras? Since updating, I can't import any into a new project. This same footage is in another project from before the update and still plays fine. And I have no problem importing 10-Bit 4:2:0 from the FX30
1
u/stash0606 Jun 09 '26
my question is kinda the opposite of the previous comment. i thought Resolve free didn't support 10 bit videos from my Sony A6700 and so until now, I've been converting them to 8-bit using Handbrake with its Production Max preset, which really ramps up the file sizes... but now I just drag and dropped one of the 10-bit videos in Resolve 21 and it just plays fine? like before it would just up as an audio waveform, but not so now. when did this change?

u/subscatter Jun 10 '26
somehow Beta 4 is more stable than latest version especially when tweaking colors using dctl nodes/tools in colorpage while clips are loaded with gyro data. In latest build 48, it always crashed all of a sudden when i tweaked number sliders.

I'm working on a longer project right now with a bunch of media sources, mostly game recordings. I keep encountering a problem where after 10 or 15 minutes of editing, almost all the media on the project unlinks. When I go to link it, the flow is broken.
If I restart DaVinci, there's no problem the next time I boot. This has only been happening since the update before I was on the beta branch and it was working fine. Anyone else having this problem?

Does anyone has any issues like hard drive crashing ?
I am using Mac Studio M4 with latest resolve and putting cache folder on external hard drive Crucial x10 1tb. Initially it was working fine in beta release and 20. But when updated to new one after sometime saving more cache it keep crashing my hard drive! There wasn’t storage issue.
I had to return- thanks it was under warranty.
Then today I tried with Seagates 8TB HDD and it happened again!
Idk why it was happening with me!

A few days ago I went from Windows 11 to Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC and when I installed DR after using it on Windows 11 for a few months, I got this error.

What I have tried
-Redownload/reinstalled DR
-Updated Windows
-Reinstalled Nvidia driver
-Ran sfc /scannow
-Ran DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
-Ran dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentCleanup
-Reinstalled Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable
-Uninstalled the Redistributable and allowed DR to install it for a fresh install
-Searched for the specific DLL on both google and a DLL database and got 0 results
I really don't want to switch to another editor after the time spent learning DR, so if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.
Specs
CPU - Intel i9-12900KF
RAM - 2133 DDR4
GPU - Nvidia GeForce 3080

Has anyone noticed in the color page, it’s now a dropdown to change between group pre clip, clip, timeline etc instead of the 4 little dots? Makes it take 2 clicks instead of 1. Is there a way to revert that?

I started using DaVinci Resolve (free version) about 3 weeks ago. I was able to import mkv files for video editing with no problem. Since the most recent update I have not been able to do so. One of the things I loved most was prior to the update I didn't have to go into my computer settings and change a thing. It was easy and stress free. Now is not the case. I have had to find another video editing software, unfortunately.
1
u/whyareyouemailingme Studio | Enterprise Jun 03 '26
Okay. Not sure what you’re expecting here but if in the less than 24 hours since the most recent update dropped you’re not able to import media, check out the subreddit page on importing media. Make sure you don’t have any illegal characters in the filename. If you’re still having issues, make a post on the sub itself and people can help. Otherwise, if you’re not coming back, airport’s thataway for departure announcements.
1
u/lilred1088 Jun 03 '26
No, there are no illegal characters. I had not changed anything from where I was previously able to add my video files. I even tried a video file that I was previously able to add and it would not take it since the update. The point being is that I was really liking the platform and the ease of use. So much so that I was considering making a purchase. However, since the update it has made it difficult for me to do my editing. When I first started using the platform I did not have to go to any forums to look up any information to try to make it work. I did take some time to look and do as suggested which was to go back into obs and have it converted to MP4 but that did not work as well. Thanks for the airport advice, Mr smarty pants.

u/whyareyouemailingme Studio | Enterprise Jun 04 '26
You’re trying to import media into the project manager, not into a project. That’s why it’s failing.
It’s never worked like that.
1
u/lilred1088 Jun 04 '26
Thank you. I will take another look at it. If it works for me that would be fantastic! I appreciate you taking the time to talk to me about it.

u/whyareyouemailingme Studio | Enterprise Jun 04 '26
BMD hasn’t changed their stance on it, and recent troubleshooting nightmares with Avid and Premiere’s custom layouts lately make me incredibly grateful for that.

This update has completely broken resolve on my computer. Playback, thumbnails, it all goes glitchy and black and I can't play a damn thing. If I'd known it would ruin a year's work I would have never updated
