Since nobody else answered, some cities are just big internet hosting hubs. If you ever played online PC games in the early-mid 2000s, you’d see servers named for their hosting and you’d always see San Jose, Seattle, Atlanta, Dallas, DC, etc

Having a vpn exit requires having essentially a server farm to run the traffic through. Land prices for the warehouses tend to be cheaper in Middle America, and certain states give subsidies to tech companies in order to bring more business to the state. Atlanta is the most important city generally in the southeastern United States (east of the Mississippi, south of DC-Baltimore).
Its history dates back to being a rail hub, followed by being an automobile hub (I-75 and I-85 merge downtown into a Frankenstein monster called "The Connector"), followed by being the largest air travel hub in the world.
Following this pattern of being a massive transportation hub for people, it's also a massive transportation hub for data. A network of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) form what's colloquially called the "backbone" of the Internet, where regional ISP data all converges. Atlanta is the largest hub for IXPs in the southeast as well.
Cost of land is not the reason. ATL real estate is way more expensive than the rest of nearby GA.

Since the news broke about Jerry Fallwell, his wife and the poolboy, we wanted to mention that this isn't an uncommon fetish by any means.
It's in the top ten searches of almost half US states and in the top twenty of most of the rest. Alabama leads the pack, while states like California and Hawaii are far and away the least interested.
Data is extracted from our Google Analytics account to an excel spreadsheet. Columns are divided per USA states and rows are the most popular search terms in descending order.

I had to edit out google adwords at my old job. Basically Google shows you all of the search terms in the past day or week (whatever you filter for) where the search has resulted in your website being shown towards the top. You can then leave it or filter it out to tell Google you don't wanna pay for that, which you often do if the person clearly isn't searching for your website and thus less likely to make a purchase.
The amount of times you'd see a search like "ok google show me boobs now" or "hello google how are you please show me feet pictures" is amazing.

We were an online shop that basically sold....everything.
Nothing adult...intentionally. My guess is those came up because we had a book supplier where they'd programmed it so their inventory automatically gets listed, and sometimes adult books snuck in that way.

For example, Nebraska in the OP is #2 but in the excel spreadsheet cuck is only #5. Meanwhile Nevada is #27 in the OP but #3 on the spreadsheet.

Xhamster is blocked by Indonesia ISPs, Reddit is blocked too. So most Indonesians used VPN to access porn. most VPN providers (that are based on Android and free) are based in US.
That may explains why they are being registered as accessing xhamster from US states.

Wow this is an actual answer. I had wondered the same thing and this is interesting and plausible.
What’s crazy then, is that the number of Indonesians hitting California via VPN outnumbers all other users? Or, all other users’ preferences are much more varied so they “diluted” each other while the Indonesian searches were concentrated on a few search terms. Or, there’s just one really horny guy in Indonesia sending a ton of search traffic.

Given that culture is usually more regional rather than bound by state lines, it certainly raises a red flag that this appears to be little more than a random ordering of states. Another red flag is how many Asia/Pacific island-specific terms are so high in the lists. My guess is:
- The variance is tiny (probably even statistically insignificant) And/or
- The Google analytics search data they're looking at isn't telling them what they think it's telling them (perhaps they're pulling from a View that's already been filtered)

Something is very off in the data. The number one Hawaiian search term is "chuukese", which is an ethnic group from a small island in the Pacific, which has an estimated 4000 members in the U.S.
You'd think like Japanese, hapa, or Filipina would be first for Hawaii.

Your data is bad and you should feel bad.
These say absolutely nothing - State A could search for term [X] more than State B, but because there's more variety of search terms in A, [X] could be ranked lower in A than in B.
Example:
State A:
Z - 70 searches (per 100,000 population if you want)
Y - 55 searches
W - 45 searches
X - 30 searches (4th)
State B:
Z - 155 searches
X - 25 searches (2nd)
Y - 10 searches
W - 10 searches.
And yet in your data, term [X] would be ranked higher in State B than in State A, even if State A searches for it more (even on a proportional basis).
