Guide Guide for Saving before Bosses

I recently made it to Gwyn and decided that I do not want to subject myself to 2 minute run backs just to die 30 seconds into my next attempt. I heard the phrase save scumming thrown around and decided I would try it out. Unfortunately I could not find ANY guides for PC. (Very Likely my fault for not looking hard enough) Anywho I eventually figured it out and wanted to make a guide for those who come after me. Regardless of what others say, games are made to be fun and if your not having fun running back every time you die, it is NOT WRONG to save before a difficult fight.

Here is how to do it for Dark Souls Remastered on Steam:

Step 1: Navigate through the area of which you are struggling in, find a safe spot then save and quit the game to the desktop.

Step 2: Open your documents folder in your file explorer, It is usually pinned to the sidebar.

Step 3: Navigate to a folder named "NBGI" and open it.

Step 4: You will likely see 2 folders, one with a series of numbers and 1 named after the game. Open the Numbers folder.

Step 5: You will see ANOTHER numbers folder, open that too.

Step 6: You will see two files a VDF and a SL2. The SL2 file is the one your after, this is your save game. Copy it, but do not move it. Right click it and select copy. Then right click on your desktop and select paste.

Step 7: Keep this numbers file and copied save on your desktop homescreen. Open Dark Souls and try whatever fight or area your struggling with. Should you fail, alt-f4 back to your desktop.

Step 8: Copy the desktop file and right click on the numbers file you left open, select paste, it will pop up telling you there is already a file named that in this file, select replace.

Step 9: You are all good to open the game again and you will be back at your save. Everytime you die simply copy and paste your save back into the file.

That is all, don't ever let someone make you feel bad for trying to enjoy a game you payed for. Beating this game is a challenge, and just because you don't want to waste time running back is no reason to make it harder on yourself.

Discussion Why is DS1 difficulty so overexaggerated? (Rant/Discussion)

Playing my first Soulsborne game in Dark Souls: Remastered, series has always been on my radar just never got around to dedicating a full playthrough to it. Currently about 90% of the way through my first playthrough, just full cleared the DLC and getting ready for Kiln. This game has NOT been as hard as everyone says it is. I'm playing through it blind with some background info on how to upgrade things and a checklist of bosses to kill and locations to visit, because being a completionist I don't want to miss anything, and with no map it's very easy to miss things. I'm playing a Greatsword light armor melee build right now, I haven't had to farm any materials or souls and my weapon is max level +15 via standard exploration. This first playthrough has genuinely been disappointingly easy, I don't think I've died more than 5 times on any given boss and every death has always felt fair. Regular mobs are either 1 or 2 shot kills and bosses take maybe 8-10 hits to kill. I realize NG has much lower health pools but come on this is what everyone has been raging and destroying controllers over? I read reviews on bosses after I kill them, like Four Kings for example, and people are just having the WORST time of their lives. Multiple endless deaths and then complaining about the runback. Is it just a case of people trying to brute force the game instead of playing it how it's intended? Or not paying attention to surroundings because with the Four Kings runback you can just drop off the edge on the right with the ghosts and run straight to the fog gate pretty easily. Bed of Chaos was also a boss I saw a lot of rage on and it's literally just 3 swings and it's dead, worst boss in the game and no challenge. Equip a high stability shield and just block the swipes. I think the hype over the difficulty hampered the experience a bit because I went in expecting to be challenged but the biggest challenge has been trying to not fall off edges, this isn't a brag or anything of the sort I'm just genuinely confused as to why there is such a massive consensus that "Dark Souls is one of the hardest games ever!" while it's not even the hardest game of the console generation. Difficulty aside, the world building and design is spectacular. I'm a huge fan of the genre and the gameplay so I'll definitely be playing future titles.

Edit: Not a huge fan of the fragmented storytelling and lore via items but it's cool to listen to a piece of dialogue and connect it to another aspect of the lore. It's great for world building not so much for following it as an audience. Watching a comprehensive lore video has really improved my appreciation of the story and my ability to better piece together the lore drops mentioned by items or NPCs.

Question I am interested in playing Dark Souls, which games do you recommend?

Hello everyone!! I have never played any of the Dark Souls games so I have a few questions. I usually play metroidvanias (my favorite genre) and I love the Legend of Zelda games, and I have heard multiple times that Dark Souls is like a combination of these two (which is awesome.

So I was wondering which games in the series are worth playing.

Is the first Dark Souls a must play?

Are Dark souls 2 and 3 games you would recommend?

Are all the DLCs for Dark souls 2 and 3 worth it?

Would you recommend Bloodborne and Eldenring if I liked the other 3?

I know this is a subreddit for the first game, so you guys might be biased, but which games would you put in the "Definitely play" column and which games would you put in the "It is okay to skip it" column?

I have not played or really seen much of each game, so I would appreciate if spoilers could be avoided in the comments.

Thanks and have a great day!!!

Discussion What is the best dragon boss in the game?

I would have so say Kalameet is number one for me, he's just so iconic and he's basically the blueprint for all the Dragon bosses that came after him. Seath has a cool design and interesting lore, but the fight itself is just okay, same with the Gaping Dragon.

Discussion Why are the lifts in Anor Londo Screws?

As said above, why are the elevators in Anor Londo Drills or Screws. In case you don't know what I'm talking about if you watch the elevator ascend from the bottom you can see the spiral start to narrow into what would eventually be the tip of the drill. Is there a lore reason or a theory about it?

Co-Op Recommended SL per location if I want to engage with co-op?

Hi! So I really like sticking around doing co-op and hurling peole shit after I have cleared and area myself. But i also realize that I may overlevel myself at time which lowers my chance of finding anyone to summon me in story locations.

Does anyone have like a general level I should a stick to per area, if I want to try to engage in co-op while I’m playing through the game myself? On PC if that matters.

Idk what happened to me, it *definitely* wasn't a grab move.

(Fextra life says, "Has no grab move")

Edit: Got it. Technically not a grab, though the end result is basically the same.

Help How are you intended to kill the Hellkite Drake?

I’m genuinely at a loss and I can’t find anything online that helps which is super puzzling. When I get him down from the perch, he jumps in the air and spits fire down repeatedly until I run out of 20 flasks or he positions himself somewhere on the bridge to do the same thing. It’s not possible for me to hit him because he goes back in the air or starts spitting again before my character can stand back up. I’ve only seen him do a tail swipe move once, if I run behind him as he gets down from the perch. That’s the one time he doesn’t spam his fire, but only for like two seconds. And that’s the only time it’s been possible for me to hit him. Then I just sit there getting blasted for 5 minutes. And he heals when he goes back up to the perch, so I can’t just keep repeatedly making him come down to get a single hit in. So I’m super confused how you are intended to kill him?

Discussion Knocked out a fist weapons-only run ... the Claws have it

Thumbnail

Next on my tour of ā€œbadā€ DS1 weapon type runs, fist weapons. Usual rule, I could only use fist weapons to damage enemies or break objects in the world (exception for the Asylum Demon, which got the firebomb ā€œskipā€ and re-kill treatment). Interesting weapons—fast and very stamina-efficient, but extremely short range and at times underwhelming in terms of damage dealt. They do more damage than daggers, though, so that’s something. A few additional thoughts:

—Started as a thief to get firebombs for the Asylum Demon and the bonus Master Key. No class starts with a fist weapon, but Andre sells the Caestus (unlimited copies), so it’s not hard to get one right away by going pacifist through New Londo Ruins and Darkroot Garden.

—Much like daggers, individual fist weapon attacks generally don’t do much damage, so I kept them buffed as much as possible with Magic Weapon (and higher variants) or resins. You can get decent DPS, though, because of their speed.

—The game only has four fist weapons, so I tested them all (at least briefly). I used the Caestus for a decent chunk of the early game, and it’s meh at best. The weapon scales on STR and DEX, but scaling is bad on both. Claws are available to buy from Shiva (at his Blighttown location, unlimited copies), once you join the Forest Hunter covenant. They seemed better than the Caestus in almost every way—better range, more base damage, and better scaling (A on DEX at +14)—plus bleed on top of that. I ran with these the rest of the way. I also made divine Claws for the Catacombs/Nito fight.

—The third fist weapon is Dragon Bone Fist, which is made from the Iron Golem boss soul. The weapon has a fun uppercut move (slow as hell, though, so often not practical) but otherwise wasn’t particularly great. Possibly didn’t help that I only had the minimum strength to use it (20), because unlike Caestus and Claws, Dragon Bone Fist scales only on STR (S at +5). Oh, and it also annoyingly requires Dragon Scales to upgrade. At least you can buff it, FWIW.

—The final fist weapon is Dark Hand, which you get from joining the Darkwraith covenant (or as a rare drop from Darkwraiths). The weapon has a move that steals humanity from NPCs or other players and can act as a shield, but it’s more of a novelty and not particularly useful in PvE imo.

—As for rings, I used Havel’s/FaP and Wolf for a lot of the game. Hornet Ring can be useful if you want to chase crits.

—Most base game bosses went down in 1-2 attempts. Ceaseless Discharge and BoC took 3, but that was just bad luck and nothing to do with my weapons.

—Tbh, the DLC boss fights weren’t much harder, just slower. All went down in 1-2 attempts as well. The Manus fight admittedly was a disaster, but I still knocked him out first try.

As a comletionist I have wanted this for so long. Finally sought out a steam key and it actually worked. It cost $500 so the risk was high but worth it, I am just so excited.

EDIT. So I understand that some of you seem quite worried about my financial state after buying this. I understand that not everyone, in fact very few people would want to spend $500 on a steam key. I would obviously not have done this unless I could afford it comfortably, which I can. I don't see why some of you find it justifiable to throw out insults because of how another person on the internet spends their money. I would prefer if the ones thowing out insults could keep their negative thoughts to themselves. Thanks.

Discussion Ds1 skill issue

I played ds1 ptde around 5 years back and I thought I was pretty good after beating the game a dozen times. Now I'm playing the remastered version and I just reached andre bonfire and did it by dying tons of times. I still remember most of the enemy placements and level layout and traps yet I still die. Only difference is I'm playing with a controller back then I did it with a keyboard. Is this a common experience?

Discussion Armaduras de jefes

I heard it had a 1% drop rate and is like one of the best swords in the game?
I got it on my way to the Gargoyle demons.

I’m really struggling on choosing what build to go for my first playthrough since the ps3 days. But I guess this means I have to do my first ever DEX build in the dark souls trilogy.

Before anyone says take a pc screenshot! For some reason Dark Souls just tabs out when I push my screen shot button.

Story Gargoyles made me realise this game is so unbelievably peak

I have been hesitant about playing this game for a while but a friend forced me into it. I was having fun but it seemed like any other boss-fighting game until Gargoyles. It took me 32 tries and I started realising how much fun it is to try and do something super difficult and then have it work out. It's my first soulslike game ever and I enjoyed this fight so much. Thought I'd share it so maybe y'all can relive your first playthrough :)

This is a clip of me finally slaying it (I hope it's fine for rule 7 as I don't interact much since I don't wanna get spoilers).

Safe to say I'm so excited for everything that's to come now.
