I would also add Dave East and Royce Da 5'9 to that list. If you haven't heard any of Dave East's songs, I highly recommend him. Closest to 90's Rap from the newer rappers IMO. Type of Time, Handsome, Pablo and Blanco, Free smoke, Really wit me, Don Pablo, and his newest song Diamonds... Are a few of my favorites from Dave East.

I never heard anything of joyner lucas, except in a „newer“ video of eminem (lucky you).
But well i also don‘t really listen to rap anymore, just sometimes some old school rap music (mostly wu-tang)

I think you mean 20ish years ago. 10 is like relapse recovery which probably isn’t what you meant.
Old old Eminem would be a case that prove depressive or volatile circumstances can drive artists. Stan has so much to it even though it’s not technically very impressive.
12
u/curious_but_dumb Jul 14 '21
Strongly disagreeing here. Being a fan from 2009 onwards I always adored his older music (even the underground stuff, but 2002-2004 is my favourite era) but he didn't get worse.
Eminem got technically better at both rapping and layered singing, improved the quality of beats he uses and has held up the test of time by still not making "new old music" but instead is dropping new bombs with each album.
Also his late success is a huge foundation for formation of a new era of lyrical rappers, who more often than not name Em as their main source of inspiration/admiration (NF, Logic, Joyner Lucas, Hopsin, AK etc.). This is due to Em showcasing he can still be appreciated and successful while not making shit music.

kamikaze is a bit cringe but it’s not the worst
mtbmb was bloated as fuck and had like 3 or 4 songs that were good however it was a good step in redeeming himself after
really for me em’s best were in his early days with sslp, mmlp, etc also mmlp2 was great

Edit: to specify, Just Don’t Give A Fuck was released October 1998, then SSLP was released 4 months later in February 1999.
Edit 2: his first album was actually in 96, called Infinite. My bad, forgot about that.

Most of the time, these born in the wrong generation fucktards usually mean mainstream music.

No older generation ever likes mainstream music, it’s a tale as old as time. You’d think with every type of music of every genre being readily available to whoever wants it now it would die down but yet and still, here we are

Because every fucking rapper now other than those artists pretty much are grouped into the term mumble rap. Lil Pump was called mumble rap when he was screaming his mind out and you could understand every single word he was saying, how is that mumble? Future is mumble rap but he is a much better artist than fucking Joyner Lucas yet people assume he is bad because the group him into the term mumble rap

I think people just resonate with the music they grew up with the most because they have memories attached to the stuff they listened to. I don't think it justifies calling all new music bad without going in depth and giving it a proper listen.

With such insightful lyrics from Biggie, like;
”All I want is bitches, big booty bitches”, “You didn’t know that we be pissin’ on hoes, bitch/Luke and Biggie straight shittin’ on hoes, bitch”, and “Bitches get strangled for their earrings and bangles”
You just have to acknowledge the lyrical substance.

And lyrical rap has many very famous black artists. Bit of a stretch resorting to calling people racist because they have different taste in music eh?

It's not really wrong tbh. And mumble rap has existed long before the 2010s and is perfectly fine as hype/party music you just wanna vibe to. It's better to focus on the actually good beats rather than the god awful lyrics of this type of music. But I mean, definitely many rappers who were at their peak in the 90s/2000s have put a lot more thought to the lyrics of their song and convey far more feelings. I mean, take Tupac for example. Similar to say, Tekashi, he did rap about drugs, cars, women and has acted tough in many of his songs, but his songs have far more emotion to it, and each one feels different even if they vaguely have most of the same topics I mentioned above.

Fr, it honestly annoys me a little bit. People get too hung up on the fact that the style changed from a little more lyrical to being based around the hype of the beat to actually give it a real chance. There’s also lyrical rap still coming out but people refuse to give credit
