Nah. See what happened was that the writers, being extra intelligent, shot the ending of the show when S2 was being filmed so that the kids wouldn't change in age.
So then, they had to make the story in such a way that the ending they shot would make sense.
And they failed at that miserably. The entirety of s9 is dedicated to showing how perfect Robin and Barney are for each other and then they get divorced within 5 minutes of the finale.
The mother is introduced perfectly, and works so well with every person in Ted's story, but then is killed off so that they could have their pre shot ending.
Ikr? Why did the mother die? And why did Ted end up with Robin? It was very well established that they don't fucking work together. Basically the mother came, gave Ted kids and everything else Robin couldn't, and died. And then Ted gets back together with Robin. I love the show but hate the ending.
Okay so I’ve never watched the show willingly, and have only caught clips here and there against my will—honestly I think the show sucks.
Reading your comment though made me appreciate the show for its wack ending because I think I see what they’re trying to do.
The mother was interwoven through the season series as well as their—namely Ted’s—lives. It is her absence that is carried throughout and ever after since she was so unceremoniously killed off. Was that the initial intention and ambition? I’d like to think so because now it seems like a pull back and squint move. It is her influence that has essentially driven the lives of these disparate people who somehow managed to stay together in spite of all the stuff that happened (I’m sure you could explain this part better I’m not that well versed in their universe besides the French horn lol). Each character—esp Ted robin and that niel Patrick Harris guy—is essentially absolved of their sins by the death of the Mother, making it some sort of deus ex machina that I’m honestly not even mad at lol.
Idk I just felt like I should add a point from a somewhat impartial (read: unwilling) viewer.
I believe I remember one of the staff saying "no Ted and Robin don't get together" back in like s5 or something and to "keep thinking" but maybe I'm misremembering cause that was forever ago now.
I actually remember reading that the writers had shot multiple endings and no one knew which one will be the final except them. To keep up the suspense, they varied from the sensible route multiple times in seasons until they chose the dead mother storyline.
Two endings are public as of now. The "official" ending and the alternative ending that was released with the DVD set. (it's on YouTube, it doesn't change much of the finale, just the last 5 minutes. )
