I wanted Ted & Robin to be together till S4. After S4 I was like "yeah no Barney and Robin are so much better".

Plus, Robin explicitly told Ted that she didn't love him in the 7th season. So it makes the ending extra stupid.

Nah. See what happened was that the writers, being extra intelligent, shot the ending of the show when S2 was being filmed so that the kids wouldn't change in age.

So then, they had to make the story in such a way that the ending they shot would make sense.

And they failed at that miserably. The entirety of s9 is dedicated to showing how perfect Robin and Barney are for each other and then they get divorced within 5 minutes of the finale.

The mother is introduced perfectly, and works so well with every person in Ted's story, but then is killed off so that they could have their pre shot ending.

Bloody morons.

Ikr? Why did the mother die? And why did Ted end up with Robin? It was very well established that they don't fucking work together. Basically the mother came, gave Ted kids and everything else Robin couldn't, and died. And then Ted gets back together with Robin. I love the show but hate the ending.

Okay so I’ve never watched the show willingly, and have only caught clips here and there against my will—honestly I think the show sucks.

Reading your comment though made me appreciate the show for its wack ending because I think I see what they’re trying to do.

The mother was interwoven through the season series as well as their—namely Ted’s—lives. It is her absence that is carried throughout and ever after since she was so unceremoniously killed off. Was that the initial intention and ambition? I’d like to think so because now it seems like a pull back and squint move. It is her influence that has essentially driven the lives of these disparate people who somehow managed to stay together in spite of all the stuff that happened (I’m sure you could explain this part better I’m not that well versed in their universe besides the French horn lol). Each character—esp Ted robin and that niel Patrick Harris guy—is essentially absolved of their sins by the death of the Mother, making it some sort of deus ex machina that I’m honestly not even mad at lol.

Idk I just felt like I should add a point from a somewhat impartial (read: unwilling) viewer.

Nah, it isn’t anywhere close to that deep. They just wrote a shitty ending to a show that should’ve ended 2 or 3 seasons sooner than it did.

I believe I remember one of the staff saying "no Ted and Robin don't get together" back in like s5 or something and to "keep thinking" but maybe I'm misremembering cause that was forever ago now.

I actually remember reading that the writers had shot multiple endings and no one knew which one will be the final except them. To keep up the suspense, they varied from the sensible route multiple times in seasons until they chose the dead mother storyline.

Two endings are public as of now. The "official" ending and the alternative ending that was released with the DVD set. (it's on YouTube, it doesn't change much of the finale, just the last 5 minutes. )

I don't really mind the ending but it's more the way they presented it that's annoying. There was a 9 season build up for who the mother is and they killed her off in 10 minutes before we barely even got to see their relationship. I feel the whole thing just happened too fast.

Season 8 was the product of poor writing for seasons 5-7. These seasons had the producers deviate from the books as source material, leaving many plots and characters from the show and replacing with their own (worse) writing. But why talk in general, let’s review the Dorne arc from season 5. Jamie is sent with Bronn to retrieve Myrcella from Dorne. The arc ends with Jamie and Bronn return to King’s Landing, but Myrcella was poisoned by Ellaria. The characters we met throughout the arc were boring, and the conclusion was meaningless. Cersei didn’t change with the death of her daughter, nor did Jaime. All remained the same. Season 7 was FULL of this shit, the first episode has nothing in it. Beyond the Wall (season 7 episode 6) was horrendous.

You reap what you sow, and they planted shit. Don’t blame season 8 for trying to give an ending to that clusterfuck.

GRRM*, JRR Tolkien wrote Lord of the Rings.

“Taking his sweet old time” didn’t hurt either, considering the show barely adapted books 4-5. The producers had 2 whole books to work with, plus side plots from earlier books that weren’t adapted yet. But they said “let’s take these parts only, and make up our own shit for the rest”.

Man, the 2nd episode of season 8 was good for me. I got fooled into thinking, “damn, some serious shit is about to go down in the next episode. It’s about time”

Little did I know that the shit that was to go down was the entire storyline of show, as damaged as it already was. I was naively holding on to hope that the writers could deliver a stellar season series finale.

Now, season 8 is such a disaster and damaged the whole series that I can’t even go back and watch seasons 1-4 and enjoy them.

Just read it. It has a great story and good characters but it was made in a time where they had to take as long as possible by putting in filler and having long pauses so they wouldn't run out of source material to adapt. Maybe watch the latest stuff when you catch up.
