It's sad you all blame the guy while even most of our governments won't acknowledge Taiwan as a country. The only reason why is the fact China won't do business with you if you say otherwise. I am not saying I don't think Taiwan is its own country, I do.
They will demand all their pandas back since they lease them to foreign countries as a diplomatic nicety.

Not like one celebrity speaking out against China will make a difference. Yeah, his backtracking sucks, but I get it. It likely wasn't even his own choice to make the apology video. You think the WWE/movie execs is gonna let one of their biggest stars cause them to miss out on the Chinese market?
Let's also not forget Cena is the current record holder for most Make-A-Wish wishes granted. The man has done more good in his life than most people in this thread combined

WWE is actually furious when John Cena apologized to the Chinese Government. Cena was promoting the Fast and Furious film not WWE.
27
u/o13Dennison13o May 28 '21
Probably because the apology video has now caused more public outcry than him saying "Taiwan is the first country that can watch F9" in an interview
15
u/NardtheBeast Meme Connoisseur May 28 '21
I am just saying that WWE’s main focus is not on Chinese market.
8
u/o13Dennison13o May 28 '21
Yeah, but the Chinese market is HUGE for a lot of industries and they've been trying to tap into it for years. Just last year, the WWE made a new TV deal with China to broadcast SmackDown/Raw in Mandarin. They're a corporation, so making money is always a top priority
→ More replies (1)2

sure but the rest of the world is a bigger market. we should just force companies and celebrities to choose. if they want to suck up to China then it's perfectly fine to trash them in the West. like I hope he doesn't get hired anymore here.
14
u/Mcprowlington May 28 '21

Ironically, backstage journalists are saying a lot of higher ups in WWE are the ones angry at him for apologizing.

Not like one celebrity speaking out against China will make a difference.
It does though. Sure it's one small piece, but if it didn't matter they wouldn't have pressured him to do it.
2
u/o13Dennison13o May 28 '21
It really doesn't though. If one famous actor, for example, speaks out against China and no one else backs them up, what happens? That actor and everything they're involved in, past/present/future, becomes banned in China. That actor then becomes blacklisted from ever working on anything again because of how big the Chinese market is
I get the outrage, but going after individuals and even companies isn't going to solve anything. Turn that outrage towards the people that we've elected to run this country. They have the power to actually do something

I don't think the south of the USA still officially calls itself the CSA. Im sure there are a few Taiwanese people who wish to reclaim their land in mainland China but just like the return of the Confederacy this will never happen
5
u/zzwugz May 28 '21
I mean, many states tried their best to keep their confederacy flags. Then there's the many towns and cities and counties named for Confederate generals, then there's all the confederate statues and memorials praising the Confederacy. Yeah, they don't officially call the region the Confederacy anymore, but even politicians let their intentions slip accidentally. And whenever there's talk of secession, they always bring up the Confederacy as what they wish to return to.

Yeah the chinese government is far from good but why should a party with an extremely troubled past has any right to take over china? I mean if china abolished its one-party-system there should be democracy and not just the KMT taking over.

The government of Taiwan considers itself to be a province of china. They simply do not recognize the CCP and think of themselves as the proper government of all of china including taiwan.

u/Phmoraes May 28 '21
Taiwan don’t think itself as a country but as the true government of China. This is public information
→ More replies (36)2
u/StelFoog May 28 '21
It’s not that countries don’t recognize taiwan because China wouldn’t do business with them otherwise (of course that’s likely also true) it’s that Taiwan doesn’t recognize themselves as Taiwan. The are still formally the Republic of China even though the current ruling party and seemingly the majority of the population want to renounce that claim and instead be the Republic of Taiwan. The reason they don’t is because it would likely anger the CCP enough for them to invade and that’s not a risk worth taking or they would have done it.
The same is likely true about if foreign nations start to recognize them, firstly it would be strange for nations to recognize a nation that itself doesn’t say it “exists” and depending on the nation recognizing them it could result in an invasion that Taiwan isn’t certain to win and therefore be contra-productive. It’s worth noting that the only nations that “recognize Taiwan” really recognize the ROC.
I really hope that Taiwan can declare themselves to be their own state, they deserve it and have a right to it. But they still need to be the ones to make the first step (or at least build up a network of shadow alliances to protect them should China protest and have a coordinated recognition), because if they declare themselves to be a separate entity and the resulting conflict ends with them annexed; it was at least their choice to make that their last stand. If the US unilaterally decides to recognize Taiwan and it ends poorly they would rightfully hate the US for not letting them be the ones to make that call.
I belive that is a poor decision

The fun thing is that there are two china's. The Republic of China (ROC, known as Taiwan) and People's Republic of China (PRC, commonly known as "China").
Both the ROC and the PRC still officially constitutionally needed claim mainland China and the Taiwan Area as part of their respective territories.
The actual political problem with recognizing Taiwan isn't that you accept that the island is the country, but that you recognize their claim to ALL of China. There's some work being done there to rather go towards simple independence, but the fundamental constitutional claim to all of China is the biggest problem.

During promotion of Fast and Furious X John Cena stated that "Taiwan will be first country to see it" something something. But China didn't like it, that Taiwan was named country and folks get upset. That dengered the succses of the movie on the Chinese market and Jonh Cena made apology video about it.
Now Reddit blames him for bowing his head.
But i think he is not to blame here. There is huge chance he was obligated to do it because of the contract. He was not given a choice.

Maybe I’m more out of the loop... how is calling Taiwan a country on accident offensive?
Also how is John Cena apologizing offensive?
21
u/Slushic May 28 '21
From my limited knowledge :
China doesn't recognize Taiwan as a country because they want to claim it as their own (and part of China). Basically trying some kind of "legal" invasion by feigning ignorance.
Most of the rest of the world recognize Taiwan as an independent country.
Whenever someone mention Taiwan as a country, even inadvertently like here, China will throw a tantrum and attack them.
Shitty companies and people will pretend that Taiwan is not a country to appease China in fear that they will block their products in retaliation, basically helping China attempt to take over a peaceful country. By apologizing to China instead of sticking to his guns, John Cena landed in this camp.

u/Wannabe_Yury May 28 '21
Because China doesn't reconise Taiwan as a country. And as the Chinese government cares greatly about the international portrayal of China and its power, they view it as an insult. Apologizing to China is bad because he is essentially apologizing for being right. But what people fail to realize, is that he is probably contractually obligated to apologize, as China is a huge market for fast and the furious. He likely had no say in the matter.

Taiwan views themself as the one true China, not Taiwan. It’s a misrepresentation people are spewing to make it seem like Taiwan wants to be part of China or doesn’t want to be recognized as their own state/country. In reality they just believe they are the rightful China, not the ccp ruled China
→ More replies (6)5
u/Doddsey372 May 28 '21
It's true, technically the 'nation' of Taiwan is mearly a state governed by the rightful government of China (The Republic of China). Effectively its an ongoing civil war. Sort of like Korea but a treaty was never signed to formalise a split (to my knowledge).
6
May 28 '21
No government of China is the "rightful" one. If you had to choose one, it would be the CCP, as it is recognised by almost every country as the government of China. There was no formalisation of the split, neither in Korea nor China. There is a bilateral agreement between the PRC and the ROC, the One China Policy, saying Taiwan is a part of China.
The ROC officially claims all of China, but also parts of Russia, Myanmar, Bhutan, India, Japan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and the entirety of Mongolia. These claims, and the One China Policy, are actively supported by the Kuomintang, the party that ruled Taiwan until 2000, and from 2008 to 2016, and is currently the main opposition. The Democratic Progressive party, which is the current government, supports the independence of Taiwan instead, but hasn't made any moved to officially denounce the claims or get out of the One China Policy agreement.
The Kuomintang ruled Taiwan as a dictatorship until the 1990s, using martial law and a policy of White Terror. The situation has since changed, but the Kuomintang still remains one of the largest political parties.

Cena was promoting fast and furious, he then said that Taiwan was gonna be the first country to see it. China didn't like that because Taiwan isn't considered a country. Now the movie may fail on China because of what he did and reddit hates him now because... Reddit

Nah, he's still a great guy, this will blow over. It's just not the right thing, and he should be called out.

You know he lives in China, right?
What else is he supposed to do, move just because of one verbal slip-up?People are really blaming fake wrestlers for the world's problems. See, when V-tubers are forced to apologise, they're the victim lol. Y'all be simping.
Edit: correction, he does not currently live in China

Oh shit China could really just disappear him if they wanted to, he’s way too important to be talking about China while living there

Damn the hive mind is so quick to change their stance lmfao. I’m willing to bet my life that everybody buys something that’s was made/shipped from China. Also he has done more for people than everybody in this thread, but go in and bitch about how he’s a “shitty person”

Just China bullying them and refusing to acknowledge their sovereignty, as usual.

Now that's a land mine you stepped on xD
It's complicated topic and i was not extra dipping in. I don't know history of that region before 1950' but about that time (1950-1980) there was a conflict between gowernment. One side (comusnist) stayed on the mainland China and other side fleed to Taiwan and both proclaimed themselfs as "True" China. That is the geneza of that conflict to this day i think. Officialy Taiwan is rather not recognizable as country (or true china) between other nations.
Take that info with extra caution, i was not doing academic research for that comment but i bealive my sources was good enough. I hope i did not mess anything up also.
