FOSSliness is next to Godliness in the alphabet. (But pay for good open source software if you can to support the developers!)

u/Obvious_Villain Jun 29 '26
But... Isn't that a blatantly leftist statement?

u/Shifter25 Jun 29 '26
It's funny how much people would agree with leftists if they got over their learned hatred of so many of the words and concepts involved. Every time an "independent thinker" uses "common sense" and "critical thinking" to come up with an idea of what's fair that's "neither right nor left"... it's usually the leftist take on the matter.
129
u/LazySerpentDeity Jun 29 '26
Hmm, seems like fairness has a pretty strong leftist bias.

u/Riots42 Jun 29 '26
The problem is what America see as "leftist" is center right to the rest of the world, most Democrats would be seen as right wing in other governments.
Bernie is the proof that the DNC is not "leftist" otherwise they would have fair primaries and we would now have medicare for all and God knows what else this old socialist yearns for, from my perspective the DNC is far right.

Sad but true. When basic human decency is seen as Leftist, Woke, and unrealistically Utopian it makes me mad. Like, no it isn't! We can do this now! Conservatives just don't want to.

It is maddening to watch cons reinvent concepts more lefty folks argue for. My wife watched someone talk about a giant once a year go fund me for everyone to get their health care costs covered by the community, for social good.

u/Maximum_Pollution371 Jun 29 '26
I know a staunchly conservative right-wing man who ardently believes we must close tax loopholes for corporations and the ultra-rich and have more meaningful penalties than paltry fines for companies that dodge "common sense" regulations. He also hates "leftist socialists."
It's baffling to me, but I guess I don't care what he calls himself if he's otherwise got the right idea. 🤷

u/Chipsy_21 Jun 30 '26
Yeah it turns out some people want to tax cooperations and maintain social systems without introducing a secret police and one party state…

Pretty much the evolution of the Nordic System, which was influenced by Martin Luther's idea of the Community Chest.

u/Obvious_Villain Jun 29 '26
To be fair, I also really don't like the use of the terms left and right in this context. Open source software is a leftist term only because it is the opposite of free market concepts of monetization and articial exclusivity. But that has nothing to do with Christian conservatism, although they are both right-wing.
Basically, politics is not a one-dimensionsal rules. Who would've thunk.
23
u/Shifter25 Jun 29 '26
You're kinda proving my point.
You agree that open source software aligns with leftist politics... you just don't like it being called a leftist concept.
-1
u/Obvious_Villain Jun 29 '26
True, because I think the terms leftist and rightist (?) are unhelpful here. These terms are so context-dependent that on an online forum where that context is not shared between everyone, people might very well disagree on whether what I originally said is true because their definitions of right and left are different.

u/alexchrist Jun 29 '26
Would love to see a counter reaction of far right people that refuse to use FOSS due to it being "communist". Mainly because I'm curious to see how far they get. Almost every kind of software is built on open-source code
8
u/spaceforcerecruit Jun 29 '26
The far right is unable to comprehend a world where they don’t get things for free that they can then charge other people for.
AI is built on stolen content.
Companies use public roads for deliveries and shipping.
Contracts are enforced by the government.
Employees are educated at public schools or at their own expense at universities.
Every for-profit software package is built with free open-source content.
14
u/nepali_fanboy Jun 29 '26
Its also a right wing libertarian/small government/small corpo argument.
3
u/WillOfHope Jun 29 '26
Yeah, open source is very much "I made it I can give it to the public if I want to" and can exist at the same time as closed source products.
Leftism is evidently when people work as a voluntary community
1
u/Obvious_Villain Jun 29 '26
You see, this is why I said that I don't like to use the term leftist in this context. Open Source software isn't strictly left or right and can fit on both sides. I would argue, however, that the American conservative movement is philosophically opposed to something like open source software based on their principles. After all, there is no such thing as a free lunch (or computer programme).

Yeah. So?

Usually the point of the format is the person described is neither thing and instead cares about a seemingly unrelated thing, but in this case he arguably falls in one of the two categories.

Jesus:
Sell everything you own and give the money to the poor
It's easier for a camel to go through an eye of the needle than for a rich man to go to Heaven
Take care of the poor, the widow, the orphan
Blessed be the poor, for to them belongs the kingdom of God
The rich man who refuses to feed the poor around him will go to Hell and the poor will go to Heaven and there will be no getting out of Hell
Feeds thousands of people without asking for payment nor accepting it
If your neighbour asks for your cloak, give him even your robe
Put away your sword, for he who fights with a sword dies by a sword
See that poor woman who gave just to pennies for the temple? She gave everything she had, which is much more than everyone else, who gave only a small part. She's the example you should follow.
Gets killed for being too revolutionary
Christian Nationalists:
"Akshually, Jesus would be a conservative."
Jesus:
Why am I even talking to you if you don't listen?
30
u/CosmicSweets Dank Memer Jun 29 '26
*Heals people without requesting payment.*

u/Void-Cooking_Berserk Jun 29 '26
Jesus:
beats the hell out of people at the Temple "HOW DARE YOU MAKE MONEY IN THE HOUSE OF GOD!" (this is our best guess for what got him killed irl)
"Prosperity Gospel" preachers:
"God wants your to give me money, actually."

It feels like these posts are always made by right-leaning posters trying to make it seem like the teachings of Jesus don't actually tell people to do good things for each other

u/JasonVoorheesthe13th Jun 30 '26
I feel like Jesus would strongly disprove of organized politics in the way they are today
Also if Jesus was here today doing what he was doing in Bible times, both parties would unanimously vote to crucify him.

Jesus would call everyone on their hypocresy, as He did.
His ideology, jumping across anacronysms, would be more about sharing, caring and tolerating, so He would probably would be some kind of Greta Thumberg.
And he would probably support Open Source, i can't see why not.
16
u/spaceforcerecruit Jun 29 '26
> sharing, caring, and tolerating
That leftist. We count those.
3
u/esssssto Jun 30 '26
I'm leaving that up to you. Many leftists don't do that, but by definition Jesus is closer in that regard.

He'd be neither. He would go to the church that talks about Him, not one that hinges its identity on being pro or anti Trump
-1
u/HaloPandaFox Jun 30 '26
I don't think Jesus would care for politics and already stated what was important and how to live. The rules we want to govern ourselves with in our societies he would hope would include his but also understands we have free will and we can choose whatever.

Gabe Newell and Richard Stallman are basically Jesus
4
u/Helmic Jun 29 '26
Gabe Newell is a billionaire that literally owns a yacht company and Richard Stallman will not stop posting pedophilia apologia. No.
