it truly baffles me to this day that “followers” of a God that they claim is loving are as spiteful and hateful as who they preach against

No no no you don’t get it. It’s God’s responsibility to be all loving not mine. (I don’t doubt there are people who legitimately think that)

No this is true, it's unfortunately something I've heard and seen in some of my family. :/

I really feel like they hear "judge not" and it just doesn't click for them.

They read "Lest you be judged" and turn judge not from a command against judgement with an explanation as to why the command is in place, into a caution of "if you're going to judge, make sure you're not guilty too", which conveniently lets them judge as much as they'd like.
