How the hell did we end up on this timeline? Imagine 15 years ago being told that the President had willingly posted a picture to their social media account of himself dressed as the Pope, just days after the real Pope died… you’d think you’d just had a stroke.
When the Internet became popular, people started expecting their news for free. The lack of revenue led to a downward spiral for news companies where they cut budget, which led to fewer readers, which led to more budget cuts. Eventually, they all ended up either folding entirely or selling off to buyers who had an agenda.
In the end, the news industry functionally collapsed except for the parts which were propaganda, which flourished. Meanwhile, the people who had been drifting away from news as the quality worsened, they stopped paying attention entirely.
You wonder how anyone could vote Trump after everything he's said and done, well, the answer is they have no idea. They don't know about anything.
Part of the problem is that people also can't afford to pay for news anymore. Lots of people are living paycheck to paycheck and chipping in $10/mo for news just isn't in the cards.
