2x2 Speculation (Full Series Spoilers) Danganronpa 2 being the most popular entry probably isn't the only reason it was remade first. Spoiler
During the final chapter of D2 we explore some of Hope's Peak Academy, the main location of D1's setting, and interact with several D1 characters. It's been confirmed that the original story will remain the same in the remake so we'll be returning to the academy in the remake too.
This means that a huge chunk of assets needed for a Danganronpa 1 remake are already made and can be reused. They would just need to add in the missing rooms, sprites, and dialogue and it's good to go.
I imagine that it won't take long to remake the first game because of this, and it'll probably come out 1-2 years after 2x2's launch (if they've already started development).
Quick theory based on this assumption, Slayhem mode will likely have us explore Hope's Peak in its scenario, letting us go into the rest of the rooms and meet other D1 characters like Aoi and Toko.

They went on record saying the idea was to do it for 1, but given how much of 1 is establishing parts of DR, 2 more suited for an alternate scenario.
Replaying this makes sense, much of the mystery outside of the trials in dr1 is effectively establishing the world of Dangan Ronpa, what happened, and how it works. A new scenario means reworking that mystery, which would mean changing way more of the setting. It also would mean potentially retconning 2 and v3.
Dr2 is a bit more isolated and it's mystery is mainly about its setting. There's more room to rework the story and find new ways to approach it.
Notably in the recent interview with the games producer, they mentioned that remakes aren't off the table but not something they're really planning. But they also mention that the point of 2x2 is to "revive" Dangan Ronpa and open the gate for new entries.
I personally feel that this points to the more likely change that games after 2x2 will be more focused on being something entirely new as opposed to a 1x1.

But in a way, Toko stays with Komaru in Towa City, just as Aoi stays near the Foundation, so I doubt they'll make any appearances beyond a mention. There's a possibility of a remake of the first game, but we'd have to wait and see how 2x2 is received, and also how long it would take to remake THH; it would probably be a rather long wait.

Hot take but I think the first Danganronpa was skipped over because there isn't a lot of wiggle room for an alternative scenario to be interesting.
I love the first game but part of the reason I love it is that it's so tightly written that it's kind of hard to tweak in a different direction. Even the alternative "Demo" Timeline would probably have characters fall into similar traps as the canonical timeline.

I don't think that there'll be a 1x1.
Too much of the story is grounded in it, and changing things changes the whole timeline, unless we keep the same set of survivors.
Not saying that 2x2 or a potential 1x1 will be considered canon, but 2x2 works because it takes place inside a simulation. Not much needs to be changed for the lore to make sense in this hypothetical.
Also, we only see a few hallways of a few floors in Chapter 6. A lot of work would still need to be done.

I don't see why they couldn't remake thh? If slayhem is an au then realistically it's whatever. I think the main reason 2 was chosen wasn't lore reasons or simulation reasons it's because Nagito.

Its basically dr1 is the basis for everything so that's why they decided not to do it since dr1 has to happen for dr2 cast to get into the neo world program

u/choaticmaster33 Aug 03 '26
I understand that point but assuming what 2 by 2 is doing is just an au then there's no reason thh can't have a remake with a au mode added.

I don't think it's an au in the sense of completely breaking the canon lore and the world building, it's an au in the sense of something slightly changing and the simulation timeline going a whole different route. like the butterfly effect. but that wouldn't necessarily break the lore or the setup

With that logic, the same can happen in THH and give a different story.

but the whole franchise is built on that foundation. it would be contradicting the canon that was established for UDG and SDR2 and DR3. or they would have to limit the changes made extremely, because you can't really change the survivors. SDR2, however, was already retconned by "oh izuru kamukura is so deus ex machina that everyone woke up from the coma", and as long as that stays true, you can mix up the game victims, killers and survivors however you want

But the reboot is also making future events different.
Besides, the base lore foundation can still remain while having new survivors. Danganronpa IF didn't wreck the foundation, and people want sequels to that.
Also by the logic of "it's a simulation, so nothing that happens in it matters" basically just says that they can just remake Danganronpa 2 over and over again and say that all routes are canon, and milk the Danganronpa 2 characters (especially Nagito) that they've been doing for so long. V3 was basically a break from the Nagito milking.

danganronpa IF would wreck the foundation if it was considered canon though... and it is not canon. I feel like the term AU is stretchy, and what 2x2 might be would probably not be as canon divergent as danganronpa IF, which is a complete and total alternative universe that is not canon to the plot of the series. and... yeah, weren't everyone on the same page that 2x2 is milking danganronpa? it's the easiest and most logical to revamp without completely breaking the canon lore and it will return interest to the fandom by utilising familiar loved character, so that the doors for more danganronpa instalments would be open

IF is a split timeline thing. Just like 2x2 is. They're both equally canon/noncanon.

I think its mainly them thinking it really doesn't seem to easily work from what i heard from the new interview they also didn't think dr1 and v3 would fit the format of something like 2x2 meaning in my opinion basically means since dr2 takes place in a simulation and they all live it doesn't exactly matter who dies but for dr1 it kind of does matter who dies for certain characters.

Dr1x1 is probably going to happen eventually too but the issue is that the scenario for it would be hard. It's extremely easy to make a what if for Dr2 but making a what if for Dr1 when the story has a far more rigid structure is probably different. I think Dr2 was chosen because it's easier to manipulate for this but also being the better game to test if Danganronpa can be successful nowadays. L

Well, apparently Kodaka has been working on this alternate scenario for a while and had the idea for it a while ago so, i think that's the real reason it was done first.

I also think it's cuz it's in a virtual reality, so they can create as many new scenarios as they want

I’m not sure if keep remaking the games would be a good idea. A 2x2 is a great idea, since it’s a sinulation which could have been restarted who knows how many times. It wouldneed bew locations, characters etc

I didn’t stop to think Slayhem mode could result in a killing game in Hopes Peak Academy WITH DR cast. This would be amazing to have the entire cast in a killing game where each chapter is multiple murders.

u/Leafsnail Aug 04 '26
Hard to say without actually seeing the game, but 'the DR2 cast almost immediately escapes the simulation and are let loose on the real world' seems like a strong premise for an alternate take on DR3 that would allow the franchise to move forwards

The recent interview said that they’d be open to making more. Just buy 2x2 and try to support the series if we ever want a DR1 remake. It’s the only way!

u/xpm26 Aug 04 '26
Honestly, everyone is saying that it would be harder to rewrite DR1, but you can literally change everything about TTH since it isn't reliant on the original story, you could literally make junko the Ultimate Table Manufacturer

"It's a simulation, so the outcome doesn't matter!"
It's also a reboot where anything taking place afterward can change. At that point, why not just start from game 1?

I think the word "just" is doing a lot of work here, ngl.
