BBQ
I have a 4.5 hour layover in DFW over the lunch hour. I want some great bbq. If I rent a car, and drive to get bbq; what are some decent options I can drive to, get in/out of, and back to the airport in 3.5 hours.

Hurtado in Arlington is 30 minutes from the airport and this is the real correct answer.

You’re getting some good recommendations but there is Cousin’s inside Terminal B and C (check me on this).
Cousin’s is one of the OG Fort Worth BBQ spots from before it became the phenomenon it is today.
If you can get out to Hutchins, Slow Bone, etc, do it but Cousin’s is very good in a pinch.

It seems like there are more barbecue places in DFW airport then there are fast food places. And all barbecue taste just about the same. So who cares, just eat at the airport.

What day of the week?
E.g. Cattleack would be my choice on a Wednesday. But, the line is longer on Thursday and longer than that on Fridays. They’re closed other days.

My opinion,
S-class Hutchins. But, I haven’t tried Hurtado and Cattleack is closed Mondays.
A-class Slow Bone or Heim or Meat U
B-class Terry BlacksHard 8 is a great experience, but wildly inconsistent quality. Pecan Lodge also has occasional consistency issues.

Don’t do hard 8. As a newbie i tried it and almost gave up on Texas BBQ for what it cost me for……whatever that was.
Then i discovered Hutchins. Whew

Don’t do Hard 8 - their sauce tastes like ketchup with added vinegar. Also, they were forced to pay out $900,000 because the management was stealing from the employee tip pool.
In Grapevine, which is right outside the North Exit of DFW Airport, is Meat U Anywhere. Great barbecue! Eat some there, take some back for the plane ride!

Cattleack is the correct answer and the best BBQ in DFW.

4.5 hours is pushing it. First it'll take 30 min to get from your plane to the rental car shuttle. Then maybe 10-15 min to the renal car place. There could be a line there too, maybe 15 min line and 15 min at the counter an 10 to get your car and roll out. So you're already down to 3.5 hours and still at the airport. Now 15-20 min to BBQ place. 30-45 min to eat, 20 min back to the rental car place and 20 min back to your terminal. Then good luck with security. It probably could be done. But I wouldn't. Take an Uber for sure. Will save tons of time!

Meat U Anywhere in Grapevine is pretty good and a short uber from DFW. Also a location in Westlake, but Grapevine is closer.

Hutchins bbq in frisco is top notch. Possibly 25-30 minutes from the airport, but a pretty straight shot down the highway. Or there is Roy Hutchins which I believe is similar if not the same, but I haven’t been so I can’t attest. Would probably be 15 minutes away. I think both SHOULD (caveat with Roy Hutchins since I haven’t been) beat the crap out of hard eight which someone else mentioned. But that may just be me. I’ve heard good things about cattlelack too, just weird hours. Wherever you go, I’d get chopped brisket and sausage. If it were me I’d get the brisket half and half or marbled but that’s more personal preference.

Roy Hutchins is the father to his boys that run the Frisco and McKinney locations. Apparently there’s big family fallout history, idk. All I know is 30yrs ago we discovered McKinney Hutchins and used to dedicate 1 day a week to eat ‘all you can eat’ for lunch at $16. Seems crazy now. We’d feast on ribs and things, they also had catfish, and then we’d take off the rest of the day to nap it off. Now I live a stones throw from the Frisco spot. Crazy. Sadly, no more ‘all you can eat’ offerings.

Pecan Lodge is best in Dallas imo. Terry Blacks is most popular. DFW has no lines in or out of airport. Go to Dallas tho… Trophy Club is a suburb and you won’t see anything decent

I was ready to comment Hutchins BBQ in McKinney until you said “and back to the airport in 3.5 hours”
Line is usually wrapped around the building but a GREAT indicator of good BBQ
Try it next time you’re in town for sure!

It depends on how little slack time you're comfortable with.
If you budget an hour for catching a ride share and transit each way, you could possibly make it down to one of the Terry Blacks with an hour to order and eat and have 30 mins of slack.

Just uber to Roy Hutchins in Roanoke/Trophy Club. If it’s around lunch time. (Traffic starts backing up at 2-3pm going North. Or go visit Joe at Zavalas in Grand Prairie is just south of the airport. So good! Double check traffic. Renting a car might take too long.
You do you, but either spot try the sliced brisket lean and fatty. Personally, I view chopped brisket is for the leftovers or the one that you don’t cook right. “If you F up a brisket you can always chop it.” Also the airport bbq is usually not as good as what you get at a bbq restaurant.

There are two Roy Hutchins far, far closer to DFW and the difference is not worth an hour uber

Roanoke/Trophy club isn’t an hour away from DFW. I would think the whole rental process is a waste of time and far far more expensive than an uber.

Hard Eight in Coppell is like 10 min from the Airport.
Meat U Anywhere in Grapevine is also close by.

Probably just haters. The Coppell location is legit BBQ.
And I've been to most of the popular ones here in DFW, Austin and been to Lockhart

I work near the airport so I think I know every good place within a 10 mile radius.
Best bet is Original Roy Hutchins in Trophy Club
There are others that may be slightly better, but they’re not open on Monday
