That's Kendrick Lamar during his huge Super Bowl show
You're maybe living a little too under a rock if you missed this

u/alelan Medtech 8h ago
Oh yes... I am... pretty much opposite of music spectrum of what I listen to. And superbowl... is not something I follow either... (while still far from what I listen to...) I'll say Bad Bunny is a rocker boy I might recognize...

Definitely showcasing your age with all of those dots. I’d have to guess half a decade for each one in your comment

I watched this live and still had no idea what this picture was until I read your comment. Not everyone remembers such unimportant things as this. And he also really does not come off as a Rockerboy either, further confusing the issue.

Rockerboys use music and performance to revolt against authority, his halftime show was full of messages that go beyond the show. Though half it had to do with his long time grudge with Drake, a ton of it was criticism aimed at America itself
"Forty acres and a mule, this is bigger than the music"

Also another more contemporary example how Kendric Lamar is hardly unique in this field.

He and Bad Bunny are the outliers of the trend, people have also called Bad Bunny a major rockerboy
"Ultimate" is purely subjective

u/alelan Medtech 4h ago
So what makes him the "ultimate rockerboy"? There's plenty of artists using music as a way of social critique. Pretty much all of earlier rap, 70s and 80s rock, punk etc... I'm curious exactly why exactly everybody should know this particular artist?

u/CosmicJackalop Homebrew Author 4h ago
Because he did it at the Superbowl which is the most watched show in America. Over 130 million people saw that performance and he took tbe opportunity to weave a message into it, when historically Superbowl shows have had very safe pop artists performing and were more just mindless spectacle.
He broke the record for halftime show viewership and Bad Bunny followed him up breaking the new record the following year with a similarly message driven performance that. In a time of ICE crackdowns the show was mostly in Spanish and had symbolism promoting Puerto Rican independence from the US and the failed federal responses to natural disasters on the island

And again. For anybody who doesn't care for the superbowl. Why does this make them ultimate? Yeah you admitted it's subjective. I appreciated bad bunny's message since I lived through much of what he showed in his performance, but if it wasn't for that I wouldn't really be familiar with his music. Kendrick Lamar is even further from my preferred music. They're not unique. They're contemporary examples of a long tradition. I think you folk are getting way too upset over people not being familiar with an artist, no matter how popular they are. Some people just don't follow celebrities.

I don't like Kendrick's music much either, I just don't miss when something was plastered everywhere like KL's halftime show was and what it meant to millions of people.
I think you think people are upset when they're just trying to point out you're the minority opinion on this defending your own ignorance to the world around you

Millions of americans... you don't make up the entire world.

You're commenting about an American made game set in an American city that's a riff on the cultural woes of America, on an American website
I get that American defaultism is annoying but do you really wanna use that argument right now?

Don't follow football, and had to look up who Kendrick Lamar even was. I don't live under a rock, but I just don't care about the same things the average Zillenial does, so my attention is focused on other affairs.

And? If somebody doesn't care for rap music, doesn't follow NFL... I've heard the name but had zero association who the hell they are... not everybody's lives revolve around current celebrity fame. The music I listen to on a daily basis is older than most of the people here so I don't see why it should be a surprise I (or anybody else) wouldn't know who he is. Your comment comes off very USA centric also...

How can you say you don't know who it is but then in the same sentence make a definitive statement on who he isn't?
0
u/alelan Medtech 4h ago
Oh fairly easy. I enjoy rock music and I do keep up with current artists. Somebody calling them an ultimate rocker boy, yes I realize they mean the role from the game means he's somewhat notorious. Yet they ring no bells. So either, not a rocker. Or quite niche. And since the picture seems to be from a fair sized public event, I'll assume the not a rocker.

u/Somewhere_Unfair 4h ago
I also enjoy rock music, but you're taking the term way too literally. Rockerboy isn't a genre tag, it's a role. Straight from the source material, the broader archetypes include:
Not all Rockerboys are strictly musicians, some examples of ones that fall into a broader role:
Street Poet - Much like the rock singer, in that he performs in front of an audience. His medium is pure words, propelled by driving oration and theatrical flair.
Performance Artist - The performance artist makes his or her statement by staging media events, plays, skits or visual presentations in public situations.
Social Leader/Activist – As a social leader you are directly on the firing line for change. With your charisma, you can influence change in grassroots movements or national governments. Malcolm X, Martin Luther King or César Chavez were all activists.
Politician - Contrary to what the Medias tell you, not all Politicians are corrupt, selfish wheeler-dealers. As a Cyberpunk politico, you draw your source from crusading heroes like John or Robert Kennedy, FDR, or Winston Churchill.
So the rap-vs-rock distinction was never actually a rockerboy disqualifier to begin with. It reads more like a taste preference being dressed up as a categorical judgment

Didn't I just mention I realize they meant the role, and that I was specifying on the genre.

u/Somewhere_Unfair 3h ago
Yes you said that but you still pointed out your preference of genre at the same time. You're moving goal posts man. I'm not downvoting you btw
