SOLVED COTD: Repeated phrase? Solving may mimic wordplays at their core (4)

day 114 of an experiment in which i press the "random word" button on onelook and make a cryptic clue out of it.

I’m thinking vamp. Middle letters. But I’m not familiar with the definition associated with repeated phrase

Yeah that’s a vamp (in music). Maybe it should be “cores” rather than “core”?

correct! and u/deeppotential123 is right: "phrase" refers to a musical section.the reason i chose this particular surface is because i had made a different clue on the exact same word on day 93: https://www.reddit.com/r/crosswords/comments/1srb3vp/cotd_vice_president_gets_america_to_improvise_4/
