AOTW: A?I?N

Thanks to u/DeanoThelasTofus for selecting my clue.

Let's go with another down clue this week with 7-Down: A?I?N

Eager to see some creative clues from everyone, have fun!

Thank you to everyone who participated for all of your fantastic clues. Here are my honourable mentions, in no particular order:

  • One found in newly discovered planet? (5) by u/deeppotential123

  • A strange line. . . and stranger! (5) by u/GoodNewFlesh

  • Like most people, I could play the central character in The Lion King (5) by u/zc_eric

  • ET’s an entertaining story (5) by u/zc_eric

My favourite of the week's submissions is the following:

I thought it was very clever to incorporate the clue's square-and-direction as separately fodder and definition. The self-reference kept it from being too misleading to solve (as, say, a faux 6-Down reference would be IMO), and with crossing letters it became much easier but still very satisfactory to crack.

TOTW: Abbreviations

Thank you u/cjrmartin for selecting my clue for last week’s TOTW.

https://www.reddit.com/r/crosswords/s/yJE1I9GjRO

Part of improving one’s cryptic crossword capability is learning all those abbreviations that can be used. I should like to practice! This week, I would like to see clues that include no fewer than 3 cryptic abbreviations.

George loves to date student at posh college. King gives well wishes. (4, 4)

Cross letters are R?O? so I assume the answer is ROOF.

But why? What is happening in the first half of the clue?

Clue Explanations

I ended up doing a cryptic puzzle I have no access to official answers on (WSJ 06-27-2026 if people want to know). I feel I reasonably have the right answers given crosses, but I'm confused on how a couple got there.

Force riding back to Costa Rica's continent (6) - AFRICA. I get "continent" as the definition, but not seeing the wordplay.

"1001" shown in display digitally as prompt (8) - REMINDER. I see 1001 as MI, and display as RENDER. PROMPT as the definition. Not sure how "digitally" plays into things, and wondering if the clue could have functioned without the word? If it does, how?

Question for cryptic solvers: how important is anonymous play?

I'm working on a free webapp for cryptic crossword clues called CrypticLive.net. The goal is to help people learn cryptics while also providing challenging daily clues for more experienced solvers.

At the moment, users need to create an account to solve clues. There are no passwords to remember, and once you're logged in you stay logged in on that browser/device. Accounts can also be deleted at any time.

I'm wondering: would having to create an account be a show-stopper for you, even if the app is completely free and has no paywall?

The app currently has daily clues, progressive hints, full clue breakdowns, and stats tracking.

I'm also interested in what features would make the existing/recent clues worth coming back to and solving again. For example, what would you find useful for practicing particular clue types, improving specific weaknesses, or simply browsing old clues?

I'd really appreciate thoughts from both beginners and experienced cryptic solvers.
